Of all the games to pick as being your personal THE GAME to get into being a gamer, mine is oddly Joust. Loved the art and just the general amount of fun that game produced between me and my family.

NEWS

• Ubisoft and Nvidia showing off the PC release of Watch_Dogs

On one hand, it's Harmonix but on the other it's a F2P endless runner....ugh.

• Also at Pax East, Capybara has been showing off their upcoming Below game. It looks good

Respawn has announced the first DLC for TitanFall which is three maps to be released next month ($10) and they started talking about what the first wave of free updates are also coming (mutagen modes, new burn cards and the like).

• Not only did Firaxas announce that we're getting a new Civilization game, it's Space flavored. Gamespot did a big ol writeup on it. I'm excited

Well, you have PAX and PAX EAST and starting next year, you have PAX South in San Antonio.

• Finally showing off some dogfighting in the upcoming Star Citizen

Cryptic finally announced the start date for Season 9 of Star Trek Online. It's on on the 22nd.

Good attach rate for Infamous Second Son as it racked up a million sales in just over a week.

So Unreal Engine 4 is coming to the Windows Phone and Windows RT but still not coming to the Wii U.

• As much as I hated Bastion (so damn boring), it's nice to see that SuperGiant's upcoming Transistor is being released next month on the PC and PS4 on May 20th.

• Another year, another cutdown Magic The Gathering game for people who don't want to smell sweaty ass in real life or giving the password for your credit cards to Wizards of The Coast. Interesting they didn't announce it for the PS3 or PS4

• Be nice if Disney Infinity would you know, touch more on the traditional Disney properties but the next game looks to be Marvel focused. Considering I'm expecting next year to be Star Wars focused, we probably won't see the original stuff till 2016 at the earliest :/

• My initial reaction was NOOOO!! But after thinking of it, I'm okay with Bruce Lee being in the upcoming UFC game. I'm curious in who they had doing the Jeet Kune Do mocap.

• Not really gaming related but Microsoft announced a few new tv projects they're working on.

Channel 4 and them are making an English version of Swedish show, Real Humans (the first season was good so this should be interesting).

The permits have been cleared, they've been given the go ahead with digging up the Alamogordo Landfill in search of the infamous fabled stash of E.T Atari carts. If you want, you can spend the whole day watching them digging live on April 26th. With Zak Penn being behind it, it should be a hoot. Hopefully he can rope Warner Herzog to be there.

NEW RELEASES

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars (3DS & Vita) - There is a demo up for both platforms if this makes you curious. Personally, I dug the demo on the Vita so I'll probably be buying this in the near future. This is basically Eugenics: The Videogame (I wish they stole the first game's subtitle for this one "Please Have My Child"). You do some "classmating" with girls and create offspring and treat them like Pokemon like meatshields in this JRPG. #Japan

Out of The Park 15 (PC, Linux, Mac & IOS) - I'm totally cheating on this one as it's only being released on Friday for people who have pre-ordered it but I don't care, I really can't wait for this new entry, it now has 3D stadiums. I'm a Brewers fan and this is the only way I can watch them not being a pile of crap. Anyways, do you like number crunching and staring at menus? Well, this is the game for you as you get to run the front office and manager of a Baseball club. Now, this isn't a liscensed game so you do have to hit up the day one custom files to get it up and running properly with real logos but it's worth it. People seem to think Football Manager is the best management sim series around and to those people I ask if they've played Out of The Park as this craps on it from great heights. You have no idea on how many hours I've spent on this game. Buy it here for $40. I'd post a video but no one has released anything of the new version yet

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (PS4) - The PS4 release of this MMO finally comes out. It's a free upgrade if you've been playing it on the PS3 (or know someone who has and can log you into it and then you can go to the website to upgrade) or it's $40 with a month of time. I'm curious in how well this game will travel on Vita with remote play.

Yomi (iOS) - The mobile adaptation of the boardgame is finally here. It's a fighting game based around rock-paper-scissors with a few wrinkles to add a bit of depth. This is a boardgame that I've always wanted to buy but could never stomach dropping the $100 for it and though you can try out the online version for free on their website, I couldn't get into it. It will be interesting in seeing how another premium boardgame does sales wise. For iOS, $9.99 for the original 10 characters and another $9.99 for the expansion characters is a bit steep.

Trials Fusion (PC, PS4, Xbox One & 360) - I can't say I was a big fan of the last one, Evolution as I found it a bit too easy but I have my fingures crossed that this one is more to my liking. The concept is really easy to grasp: you're on a dirt bike going through timed obstical courses while being very careful with the position of your body so you don't wipe doing wheelies or endos. It's simple, it has a ton of content and the series is typically hard so you don't run through it all in one or two sittings. This is more interesting in that while you can buy the regular game digitally for $20, the physical release wil run you $40 as it includes the season pass. There are supposed to be 6 or so content packs in addition in what ever people make in the track editors. And though I may not have been a big fan of Evolution, it did introduce multiplayer which was a lot of fun and this contues with that. Throw in an actual trick system and I'm game

Wargame: Red Dragon (PC) - Eugen Systems, I really like this series but please quit pumping out so many full priced stand alone expansion packs, Airland Battle isn't even a year old. That being said if you're interested, what you will get is a killer but sadly slept on RTS with a great multiplayer community.

That's it,

The first was Heroes of Might and Magic.  The second was civilization 1 through 3.

25 cost you a decent penny for a real Joust cabinet Posted by: The Dude at April 13, 2014 03:31 PM (bStrg) Yes. I bought the original Defender cabinet, from a company in California that deals with them. It was in excellent condition. I still couldn't get enough owning it. Years later I still walked up to it to play. Unfortunately I had to move thousands of miles away and couldn't justify the cost of moving it. I could kick myself now. I should have held onto it. It never failed me. I sold it back to the folks that sold it to me.

29 Ok I need help deciding on something. I am considering buying a PS3 or a XBox 360 since there are still good games coming out on them both. I'd consider PS4 and XBox One but I just don't want to be an early adopter, or pay full price. I am leaning towards a PS3 because its blueray so that would give me a blueray player, you also get access to the PS network and you don't have to pay for it like with XBox. I am also wondering is it worth buying the systems that have an 8gb hd, or should I pay extra and get a 250-500 gb hd? Mostly I want one so I can play GTA V on it, they are being such bitches about whether its ever going to make it to PC.

Posted by: The Fool at April 13, 2014 11:39 AM (cGlgB)

30 if you're looking at a PS3, stay far far away from a little 8GB HDD unless you're planning on replacing it yourself. Most games need to be installed and considering in how slow it is to instal games, you tend to keep the files on the console just to save you 30+ minutes

Posted by: The Dude at April 13, 2014 11:42 AM (bStrg)

31 I would consider a 360 also if there were a better deal for them. I really don't know which has an edge for gaming. As neat as having a blueray player would be I don't have any blueray dvds even.

54 LOTRO has Update 13 coming tomorrow, "The Breaking of Isengard," including session play as Treebeard. Posted by: davidt at April 13, 2014 04:47 PM (nEIMV) I loved LOTRO. We were in the beta, and the problem with beta playing is that sometimes you just get burnt out playing before release, or just a year into the release. We were always waiting for new content, so we quit. But, it was so fun and smooth playing. I loved the cut scenes.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at April 13, 2014 01:23 PM (IXrOn)

55 Of all the games to pick as being your personal THE GAME to get into being a gamer, mine is oddly Joust.

F-ing pteradactyl.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri 2 looks good. Based on the Civ V engine, hopefully they won't suffer from the same late game resource blowup and overflow that ended so many of my games in the original (yeah I built way too many cities and satellites).

LOTRO has Update 13 coming tomorrow, "The Breaking of Isengard," including session play as Treebeard.

And revamps of several areas, improvements to mail and inventory, and a host of other goodies. Unfortunately the one thing I was most looking forward to, the quest log limit increase is going to be a per character mithril coin purchase rather than an accountwide purchase (which we were asking for).

Posted by: Methos at April 13, 2014 01:34 PM (hO9ad)

56 Joust was one of those games I didn't get into until there was a home version that I could download from a local BBS. The learning curve on the arcade was just too high. Same for Defender. The 'press button to change direction' control drove me up the wall but I played for many hours on my Atari 800. There was also an excellent Defender clone called Dropzone on the Atari, by a Brit named Archer Maclean. More recently he did the Mercury games on various platforms.

The Eugene Jarvis game that really grabbed me in the arcade was Robotron.

I was a Galaga demi-god. Good enough that I had to be the second player to see my score correctly due to a bug that would push the leading digits of the first player's score off-screen if you went over a million points.

Around 1988 I became friendly with this woman who had recently moved to CA and joined the LASFS. We discovered that we'd both had been big Galaga players. Several weeks later, a bunch of us were having dinner after a LASFS meeting at the original Jerry's Deli, which has a bowling alley attached. This included a small arcade with a Galaga machine. Neither of us had touched a Galaga in at least five years. I let her go first and when my turn came the old instincts kicked in. I got up to around 150K before getting blowed up. This took at least ten minutes.

"Oh, do I get to play now?"
"Sorry, I told you I used to be pretty good at it. Back in the day I would have made it to at least 500,000."

Posted by: Epobirs at April 13, 2014 01:36 PM (bPxS6)

57 Joust was definitely a fave of mine back in my childhood. On the Atari, off my brother's pirated game library.

59 There is no good reason to get either a PS3 or Xbox 360 without a hard drive, unless you plan to install one from a separate source almost immediately. If you look around you may find a deal on refurb Xbox drives that make it a good deal. You can use off the shelf drives in the PS3, of course.

Long term, as you can easily get both machines for the cost of a PS4, I'd recommend going that route. This will give you both sets of exclusives and the ability to choose on multi-platform items or go for the best price where all else is equal. As for the cost of XBL Gold, you can regularly find deals on one year cards that bring the cost down to less than four bucks a month. Add tot hat the value of the Games With Gold free games and it really worksout pretty well. Remember, you get to keep the free Games With gold even after the subscription runs out. They're permanently attached to your account whether it is Silver or Gold.

I think it is strongly probable that there will be a 'definitive edition' of GTAV on the new machines. The reticence on the PC version may be due to this.

Posted by: Epobirs at April 13, 2014 01:44 PM (bPxS6)

60 Son has started playing Runescape again (G-d alone knows why since he has subscriptions to both WoW and DDO). He plays it enough that Eldest Kidlet found some sheet music for some of the background music and is teaching herself how to play.

62 Speaking of Game With Gold, the title for the second half of this month is Deadlight.

I bought this on a sale several months ago but only got around to playing it this week. Essentially this is a platformer with a Zombie Apocalypse theme but that doesn't convey how well done the game truly is. Set in Seattle in 1986, the game is intensely atmospheric.

Getting this as a freebie is worth the cost of a Gold subscription all by itself. Though if you acted today, you can still get Hitman: Absolution as the free item for the first half of the month.

I almost go all the way back to the arcade version of Pong.  I used to be an absolute terror on Tournament Cyberball 2072, Pole Position, S.T.U.N Runner, Hard Drivin', ...hell, just about any driving game.

You showed up for the mechanics in Smash TV, and you kept pumping quarters in it because of the awesome soundtrack.  Yeah, Circuit 3 was a bit of a dog, but pumping 3-way shot into the buffalo herd kept you from hearing it anyway.

67 re: 360 vs ps3, have to go with ps3. have both, but the PS+ deal on PSN
is great - lots of good free [as long as you have PS+] games every month.
IMHO - 360 for shooters, ps3 for japan/rpg games. good luck

69 Well I could talk about arcades all day long I played Joust on a bunch of different Atari systems (2600/8-bit/7800/Lynx) before coming across an arcade machine that worked. I miss concepts like it that were just off the wall yet fun. Although if anyone ever felt that Joust wasn't hard enough then there was Joust 2. Which is disliked enough that no one ever talks about it. My personal "holy grail" to get one day is Major Havoc. Lesser known Atari arcade game that is an amazing cross between space shooter and platformer. A close follow-up is BattleZone, which I just picked up recently but MH is a surprisingly deep game for something to come out of arcades in the early 80s. Unfortunately they are hard to find at anything approaching a "low" price.

70 6 Video is fantasy, and virtual. Pinball is real.

But but but ... Pinball Construction Kit!

71 Interesting Disney is noted here b/c apparently Disney bought Angry Joe Show's channel. He goofed on that recently. re Infamous Second Son: Yahtzee of the Zero-Punctuation reviews thought it wasn't up to par. It's hard to tell with him though as he pretends to hate everything, rather like MrCranky back in the day. And yeah, I loved Joust.

72 DKCZ --

The only "mods" I have are the three official DLCs at this point, so that isn't the problem.  (Unless one of those hiccuped, of course.)

Oh, well.  I couldn't find anything in a web search either, so I guess it was just a fluke.  I may try going to Mount Anthor again tomorrow, to see if it's still there, and if so just avoid dragon bounty hunts there.

73 Posted by: Empire1 at April 13, 2014 08:39 PM (T9dxl) Congratulations! You seem to have discovered a new Skyrim bug a mere 29 months after the game's release.

I used to collect the classic games, now I just repair/resell as a hobby.  I love 'em so much and I get a lot of joy bringing them back to life!  Centipede is currently undergoing a refurb now.

Defender is my all time favorite - no game (okay, maybe another Jarvis creation - Robotron) makes me feel like an old man now - they just kick my ass for the most part but after a few warm-up games. . . In.  The.  Zone.  Pure greatness!  Thank you, Eugene!

I got my first computer back in '95 for the sole purpose of finding a great baseball sim.  Baseball for Windows (the Ernie Harwell play-by-play was near seamless and was greatly immersive) was fantastic but they went under.

I'm now in my 8th season of OOTP (I run one each year, starting on real Opening Day and going throughout the season) and can't recommend it enough.  Wonderful simulator.
