Zakn here manning the helm!
Now that Blizzard seems to have gotten their Server situation fixed, Diablo 3 has kinda taken over. In Eve, our killboards have really slowed down, as everyone is playing D3. Only to log into Eve when Jabber "Pings" for fleets or Defensive operations. It is quite comical. Here's an example: directorbot@goonfleet.com/directorbot: Heyo, I know all of you are playing Diablo3 and Dust beta but a big brawl is kicking off -- please login for an hour to play some Eve Online
Myself, I did not receive a Dust 514 key as of yet which really doesn't matter because I don't have a PS3, but I have friends. i think.
The Steam Group is going strong. We had our largest turnout yet for Moron Tf2 night on Friday. We are going to take this week off. The Server admin isn't going to be around, and I want to get some Overtime. However, If you admin a server, and are willing to give us some time, Post about it in the Steam Group and I'll work out the details with you there. TIA
Lets go ahead and get to the content portion of this Post
I talked a little Diablo 3. If you haven't bought it because of the Blizzard errors, it seems they have mostly fixed them. I'm not even lagging out in big fights. So if that describes you, Go buy it. Its a fantastic game. I had total flash backs to Steam/Half Life 2's release. I get why they did it. Part of it is piracy, but the always on connection probably has more to do with the game not being hacked and duping items. I can see why they are especially antsy about this because of the Auction House and the Real Money Transaction stuff. I can see them wanting to protect the integrity of the game and the economy. I did the Open Beta thing, and I had problems then. They should have known the game was going to be popular as heck. So yea. They should have gotten it right the first time, but whatever, I'm not going to Occupy Reddit about it.
I will also add, I think they really got the "Death Mechanic" right. The Crafting mechanic is interesting, so we'll see how that goes forward. I think I put too much money into it too early, as my Smith is starting to make things I can't equip for 5+ levels (oops).
I can see how the game will be fairly re-playable at the different difficulties. And in Multi-player. And in PvP when they add that feature eventually. It is definatly fun to be immersed in the Diablo world again. Seeing Tyrael and Hearing Dekard again is really wonderful.
The game is down right beautiful in some parts. I just finished Act 1 and here's the Cut Scene. ~~Spoiler Warning~~ (but it's nothing really game spoiling, so if you are on the fence, check it out)
I won't get into it too much because I don't want to Spoil.
I know some 'ettes said they like to play games with their kids, this probably isn't the game for that. There's alot of gore. Frankly maybe i'm just getting older (soft), but some of it seems a little excessive to me (probably just because I went through the torture level/Butcher fight). Not stomach turning, but it's a thing. If you are looking for a similar game that isn't nearly as violent, or Gory. Check out Torchlight when it goes on sale, or Torchlight 2 when it comes out. That game is very well done and downright pretty.
Assassins Creed Franchise is on sale in Steam this weekend, so if you want to check those out, now is the time to buy.
I am waiting for Max Payne 3 to come out on PC, as I have literally not touched my Xbox 360 in years. If you have opinions or thoughts, Post 'em up! Listening to the Bombcast talk about it, it's way different than the first two. Lookin' forward to it.
Kerbal Space Program. Anachronda had been talking about it since we started the Gaming Threads. I started futzing about with it a few weeks back, and I must say it's really cool. I'm already a fan of Internet Space Ships, so this was right up my alley. Only it's hard as hell lol. Also up my alley. The game is amazing. It is quite the physics/spaceship simulator. It made me go back to my physics past and really start mathing it out. Now you don't have to do that, they have a Community that can help you out with tables and all sorts of things. I have managed to orbit Kearth (or whatever it is called, I don't feel like looking it up), Breaking orbit and being captured by the Mun and establishing an orbit, Decelling on the Mun and crashing like a boss. I haven't done any mods, so I felt pretty proud of myself. Check the game out. It's a fun little simulator. Maddening...Yet Fun. I haven't done the more advanced stuff, but it's pretty cool. Check it out if you like flight sims.
Eve Wise. Not much besides the Tech "Wars". Everyone is Playing Diablo 3 and waiting for the Inferno Expansion to drop on May 22nd. I will say it's nice to have a break. I was looking back at my Corp history and I went over 6 months in Null last week, and it's been a crazy crazy six months. Deployments, wars, moving to new space. More War. We'll see what the expansion brings, and then how everyone reacts to the changes.
And yes. CCP Guard is a Midget (lol)
Hit me up on teh Twitters
Hey all, Lemmenkainen here.
I too have been playing Diablo 3 this week, and it's good. I was really unhappy that I couldn't play my single player game due to Blizz's server problems earlier this week, but I suppose that's one way to prevent game pirating.
I also picked up the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft this week for 1600 Microsoft points ($20) and have been playing it with my two sons all week. They're 6 and 10 years old and they both love the game.
For those who aren't familiar with Minecraft, it's a sandbox type building game developed by a small group of guys in Sweden called Mojang. The game has pretty low rez graphics but it's a load of fun to play.
You gather resources and build stuff, while dodging zombies, creepers (frak creepers man!) and skeletons. There is no goal, no quests, no leveling, and it's surprisingly fun.
The game is available for PC, iOS, Android, and Xbox 360. The 360 version that I've been playing has 4 player splitscreen as long as you have an HD TV. There is a demo download on Xbox if you want to check it out.
Here's a fan made trailer:
SilverGTP here, good afternoon Morons and Moronettes. I don't have much this week because I'm not into Minecraft or Diablo but what I do have is totally awesome.
Check out this cool hack of the original Frogger game. It's called 5th Avenue Frogger and it uses real-time traffic data to represent actual cars on 5th Ave. It's probably more difficult than the original Frogger because actual drivers are more chaotic than NPC drivers.
Here's an interesting article entitled "How to Use Gamification for Better Business Results". It's a bit dry and boring but the point is valid, that we've all been 'gamified', whether or not we actually play games. Naturally, gamers have an advantage when using gamified markets.
Here's a short documentary-styled video about Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 featuring Oliver North:
Finally, here's an article from PopSci about the most violent videogame the author has ever seen. He's talking about Sniper Elite V2, and yes it is violent but not the most violent game I've ever seen. You be the judge:
I might just have to buy that one, even though I'm not very good at sniping. I'm more of a run and gun while throwing grenades kind of gamer.
Have a great week, and as always you can find me on Twitter.

Tabletop wargames are where I'm at now. There's actual strategy involved instead of just running in arcade style and shooting everything.
Just bought The Killing Ground, a massive Normandy game, and will be buying the Overlord expansion for it. Also have Flying Colors, an age of sail naval wargame, and Ran, a game set in the Japanese feudal period.
Liberty Roads is on my list to buy in the future. Being able to start the invasion of France from anywhere looks fun, as does the large scale of the game.
BoardGameGeek has pages for all of the games if anyone wants to look them up. Apparently this site hates lots of links.

After 4 playthroughs and four different achievement breaking quests I finally got that damned Oblivion Walker achievement on Skyrim.

$15ish. They give you a break if you pay a big chunk at a time.
And if you pony up dough for Kerbal Space Program, you can download a newer version with moar features. Like landing legs for your Munar lander. And persistence, so you can leave a ship orbiting Kerbin and try (futilely, in my case) to rendezvous with it. The most recent version has a second, smaller moon in a higher, more inclined orbit (I've not landed there yet) and the ability to build airplanes.

Attention any moron (or moronette) who is fan of Dungeons and Dragons or is interested in learning to play! This week marks the start of a new Encounters season!
Last week was character creation, but don't worry - every place running D&D Encounters will have pre-generated characters if you just want to show up and start playing.
This week marks the start of the Web of the Spider Queen. If that means nothing at all to you, the focus is going to be on the Drow and the Underdark. The Underdark is, in D&D 4E, as massive underground system of tunnels and dungeons. You dig deep enough, and things get really dangerous.
If you're interested in D&D, check out http://tinyurl.com/c5h5yu the Wizards Store & Event Locator. They're a lot of fun, and a great way to safely check out this whole "table top roeplaying thing" if you've ever been interested.
If anyone is specifically on the Eastside of King County, Washington, check out Crossroads Bellevue, as I run a game there. I'm BoB. I'll be the one with the laptop.

Interesting that the Encounters theme is the Underdark since that's the new DDO update as well.

F, I just wrote a few paragraphs on D3, forgot to put a name and email, and it got lost. Sigh.
TLDR: I'm a Diablo fan. I played the open beta for 2+ hours. Like the graphics/gameplay well enough, don't really like the RPG stat/skill leveling design they chose. Less RPG than even D2 was; skills are more like an item loadout then real spec'ing. 1000+ reviews on Amazon, 2.5 average.

Not a coincidence haha. The new books released are Underdark based, DDO is releasing an Underdark expansion, and the new (non-random, FINALLY) miniatures being released are Heroes of Cormyr vs the Drow.
Wizards is finally starting to actually run their business like it's an actual business haha.
Now if only we could get their software tools to not suck.
Posted by: BoB at May 20, 2012 12:21 PM (eEaHR)
I've been playing Torchligh. Right now, if you prebuy Torchlight 2 on Steam for $20 you get Torchlight for free.
Mechanically it's a decent game. The stat/skill leveling system is a lot like Diablo 2 and it's ilk, though I wish you could respec (at a suitably high cost of course). The item system is a _lot_ like Diablo 2, including transmutable gens. The graphic quality is good and easy on my rig, though a bit cartoony for my tastes. The main problem is that there's really no story and the dungeons and monsters aren't varied enough. It's fun for an hour or two of bashing/loot collecting (and you have a shared chest that all of your characters can access which is nice).
Torchlight 2 is supposed to add a lot more variety in story/locale/monsters, so I think if you're a fan of the genre and have the money, $20 for a simple but fun monster basher now and a hopefully better game in the summer is a good buy.

I started reading R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series (he's a Drow for those that don't know). I'm through the first 2 books and they're pretty decent. Iirc Salvatore actually created much/all of the Underdark within TSR prior to writing the novels.

33Titan's Quest (there are two so far) is not bad, it's not any *better* than D2, just a different story and different details.
I enjoyed it a lot at the beginning but it sits idle now. A leetle repetetive, I would not say insanely difficult but character progression is not that fast or impressive.
It's just TQ and an expansion, right? Although the expansion added a lot. I liked the skill synergies across classes, I thought that was very cool and with the ability to respec made for some fun character planning (the skill calculator that someone came up with was very useful). I agree it got repetitive after a while, if there were more people playing online it would have been better. I really liked the design though and will keep an eye on Grim Dawn.

It would work better if they did things like, provide D&D Insider access free to those who subscribe to DDO (or at least at a discount)
Or gave you an DDO item (mount or something) when you bought a book.
Or did any one of a thousand things one can do to cross pollinate sales and generate leads from one line of business to the next.
They're learning, slowly but surely, they're learning.

In my experience/opinion, the original UT had hands down the best "feel" wrt keyboard/mouse to in-game movement interaction of any FPS ever. I played the h*ll out of that game and was pretty good vs. other people online. I also really enjoyed the first Half Life TF2 mod, especially the "Hunted" maps.
I too haven't enjoyed any of the last 6 years of online FPS games as much as the previous crops. I'm not really sure why. I really want to try the Friday night TF2 but I can't get on until later at night.

Am I the only one left who likes adventure games? I cut my teeth on SQ and KQ, though LucasArts was better when it was still around. Telltale I hear has gone downhill since the Monkey Island revisits and Sam and Max (obviously they liked Sam and Max better, they made three times as many episodes).
I had my on the "Runaway" series when it went on sale on Steam, but realizing I wouldn't have time to play it passed it up. It looked decent.
Yeah, Day of the Tentacle and Monkey Island were pretty fantastic. Have you played the updated MI? If so, does it hold up?

The D3 beta didn't run here on my trusty netbook. It failed to allocate something it needed.
Mists of Pandaria gives me blinding white ground.
Earlier versions of WoW run just fine, albeit not at the best framerates (it *is* just a netbook, after all).

Yes, it does. If you mean the updated original MI, it's just better sound / graphics on the same story.
Yeah, that's what I meant. The new graphics actually threw me off a bit, though I like how you can switch back and forth. I'm just wondering if the dialog and choices hold up. I still have the original disks and code wheels somewhere but I'll keep an eye on a Steam sale (love those). I'll look out for Tales of MI too, thanks.
Because game developers and Hollywood are *terrified* of original stories. Apparently.
Why would you make an "original" story when you can make historic amounts of money on a comic book sequel (Avengers)? Speaking of which, I'm praying that XCOM Enemy Unknown is good. The original XCOM is probably in my list of top 10 games of all time.

Cuts back on graphics settings and resolution so you can play it on a netbook. Like with the simpy processors and integrated graphics.
Yeah I figured that. I should have said "exactly what it does". I just didn't know if it more than just automatically set the various options to some defaults.

Based on what Mero and others have said, I don't think I'm going to bother with Skyrim. I don't do mods and patches, 'cuz I'm lame that way, so if something's not immediately playable it's not much use to me.

The nice thing about Skyrim is that it's on Steam, which means that by the end of this year (and probably by Halloween) it'll probably show up 50%, 66% or possibly even 75% off on a one-day sale. I've seen it once at either 25% or 33% off.

What did I love about GRAW? Well, the >4 coop campaign to begin with. Gamewise, the wide open maps that promoted strategy and stealth. The sandbox approach to war gaming that allowed for infinite possibility. The dependance of the team on each class for the various confrontations.
What did I get in GRFS? Riding rails. When I actually had control of my character, it was a single path, close combat bullet fest. Kinda reminded me of...hmmm...oh yeah: every single other goddam war game made in the last 5 years.
I never thought I'd say this: OFRR is a far, far better game than GRFS.
