Geraghty: Left's Overpraise of Chelsea Clinton Gives Away Their True Feelings About Aristocracy
— Ace

Via @rdbrewer4, a really good piece.

Chelsea assures us that her past workplaces were “incredibly, fiercely meritocratic.” Sometimes in past interviews, the interviewer inadvertently expresses surprise at the seemingly high-level jobs Chelsea Clinton gets handed...

Chelsea took that “Assistant Vice Provost” position [at an NYU school] in 2010, at age 30.

Now Chelsea’s “making her move”, which warranted that Fast Company cover piece:

Now, finally, she has decided to join the Clinton family business. As vice chair of the recently rebranded Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, she is helping one of the worldÂ’s most notable philanthropies grow up.

She must have been extraordinarily talented to be named vice chair of an organization that has her name in its title, huh? What are the odds?

...

Dear friends on the Left: You canÂ’t bemoan the death of opportunity in America, and rail against the richest one percent, and then devour puff pieces on how exceptionally talented and wonderful the offspring of our super-wealthy political leaders are, earning plaudits just by showing up with their famous last names.

The New York Times' public editor (ombudsmen) Arthur Brisbane described exactly how the media covers their favorite causes in 2012:

I also noted two years ago that I had taken up the public editor duties believing “there is no conspiracy” and that The Times’s output was too vast and complex to be dictated by any Wizard of Oz-like individual or cabal. I still believe that, but also see that the hive on Eighth Avenue is powerfully shaped by a culture of like minds — a phenomenon, I believe, that is more easily recognized from without than from within.

When The Times covers a national presidential campaign, I have found that the lead editors and reporters are disciplined about enforcing fairness and balance, and usually succeed in doing so. Across the paper’s many departments, though, so many share a kind of political and cultural progressivism — for lack of a better term — that this worldview virtually bleeds through the fabric of The Times.

As a result, developments like the Occupy movement and gay marriage seem almost to erupt in The Times, overloved and undermanaged, more like causes than news subjects.

36 She didn't earn that hedge fund job she got out of college either. And she is on all these corporate boards, too. Don't forget that just a year ago, the Clinton Foundation was cited as being mismanaged with little money being awarded and the money that was being given to Clinton cronies and jobs also being given to the cronies. That all hit the news and then was quickly swept under the carpet.

To those who love her, her accomplishments are being First Lady, Senator, presidential candidate, Secretary of State - and they think who ask, "So what did she get done while in those jobs?" miss the point.

65

I'm reminded, as I often am when Chelsea Clinton's name comes up, of John Derbyshire's article from 2001 titled "Be Afraid."  A taste:

---------

More than anything, I admit, I hate Chelsea because she is a Clinton.    Not just genetically a Clinton, but in spirit and habit and manner. The evidence for this is now, I think, sufficient to indict.

Item: Last Christmas Eve, the Clintons attended Midnight Holy Communion at the National Cathedral in Washington. Chelsea was the first Clinton to show up Â… seven minutes into the introit! Mom and Dad were even later, of course. But why did Chelsea have to be late at all?  To Holy Communion!   It's just so Â… Clintonian, the utter lack of regard for other people. If you are a Clinton, other people don't exist, except for the few seconds they are handing over money to you or Â… well, you know.

Item: At the Middle East peace talks in Camp David last year, Chelsea took dinner with her father and Ehud Barak, and so monopolized the conversation, the Israelis are said to have been offended. Excuse me, but what the hell is Chelsea doing inserting herself into extremely delicate diplomatic negotiations? What position does she hold in the diplomatic corps? Who appointed her? We are told that Chelsea is by far the most traveled presidential offspring in history. On whose tab? To what purpose? Did she turn down any of these junkets? Of course not. Again, it's so Clintonian — the sense of entitlement, of sneering, lofty indifference to the fact that this money I am spending has been ripped from the pockets of hard-working Americans, most of them much poorer than me, by force of law. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Item: When Chelsea went off to Stanford, we were told that she planned to study to become a pediatric cardiologist. How noble! —to give over one's life to curing the heart problems of little kiddies! Yeah, right. A Clinton, giving over her life for anything at all other than … herself. Now that there is no need for spin, we hear that her next stop is at Oxford University to study Economics. That's about m-o-n-e-y. Much more interesting than those damn kids and their stupid messed-up hearts.

Posted by: @JohnTant at April 21, 2014 10:09 AM (eytER)

66 OK a question for the Horde. Chelsea is married to a Jewish fellow, who's dad is a convicted felon. Does this make her a JAP? Jewish American Princess?

Derb may have missed the part where stupid scrunts don't get to be pediatric cardiologists, because becoming a pediatric cardiologist requires demonstrating that one can learn and think and you know, measurable accomplishments.

140 There is a reason why Chelsea is being pushed as the "face" of the Clintons, and that is because she is young. Back in 92 when Clinton ran, the MSM did all kinds of puff pieces on the young dynamic power couple that was running for office, and how Hillary was going to be the most trusted adviser of the President! Why, it was almost as if they were going to have a "co-Presidency", and then Hillary became a liability. Fast forward to 2008. Hillary is running for President, and guess what it will be? Another "co-Presidency" of this power couple, and with Bill as the face of the campaign. Both still dynamic and featuring their freshly graduated from college daughter. Fast forward to 2016. Hillary is pushing 70, no longer 1/2 of a dynamic young power couple. Her husband has started to look and sound frail, what to do? Simple, make your daughter the face of the campaign to try to counter what will probably be the GOP's youth of its candidates. Just having Chelsea on the campaign trail will make Hillary the "youth candidate" for the MSM. Another bonus, Chelsea can bank a shitload of cash in salary without having to go under public scrutiny during the campaign.

153 The Dems need a royalty and an associated aristocratic class.  Back in the day, royalty claimed a Divine Right - from God.  God, for a lot of the elites, is a fairy tale for children.  So, a "royalty" without a deity's approval.  Which leaves devotees with a problem: how to justify the elevation of a mere mortal born amongst us to the status of a king or queen?  Money? Will Obama's daughters receive the same kiss-ass treatment as Chelsea?

Not so much.  Democrats, especially the rich, old line Democrats are at their base racist.  The party embraced slavery, and even after the Civil War settled the issue, the Democrat KKK and Democrat State Legislatures gutted black civil rights with Jim Crow laws.  Jim Crow came to Washington DC when Woodrow Wilson, a proud NJ Democrat was elected US President.

The Obama kids may be hired on as tokens, if they know their place, and toe the line.  After all, even white as snow liberal MSNBC has their token black commentator.

269 With endurance athletes we have a fairly small region producing a very high % of elite marathoners. But, hey, Forbidden Knowledge is Forbidden, right? Posted by: Costanza Defense Before PC rules totally took over the biological sciences, they did study this "anomaly" and found a minor DNA variant in Ethiopians and north Kenyans that allowed for more oxygen to be carried in the blood for extended periods (forgot the exact details), enabling better endurance performance. It is not racism to point this out, it's just fact. It's not like athletes from other regions don't train as hard or don't try to win as hard: they just don't have the genes. Yes, it is now "taboo" to point out that ethnicities have self-evident variations (visible and not visible), but that doesn't make it untrue. I have a friend who is an Armenian woman who complains constantly that she has inherited from her family, as has every Armenian girl she's even known, too much body hair for her liking, especially on the upper lip and legs. 287 Genetic Basis for Muscle Endurance in Animal Study http://www.uphs.upenn.edu/news/News_Releases/2011/07/animal-study/ PHILADELPHIA — Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have identified a gene for endurance, or more precisely, a negative regulator of it. Not having the gene relates to greater endurance in the knockout mice that were studied. The investigators also showed that the gene is linked to Olympic-level athletes in endurance sports such as swimming compared to athletes in sprint sports such as the 100-meter dash. The study appears online this week in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. The work has implications for improving muscle performance in disease states including metabolic disorders, obesity, and aging.

309 We are in early days with a few genes located here and there that have proven impacts. http://www.cavemanpower.com/ blog/genetics-what-seperates-endurance-athletes-from-sprinters/ According to Professor Kathryn North from the University of Sydney, a gene variation commonly found in endurance athletes most likely evolved as humans moved out of warm, food-rich environments to colder and harsher conditions, new research shows. The variant form of the gene ACTN3, commonly found in endurance athletes, is also associated with more efficient muscle metabolism. Authors conclude that ACTN3, the original “sprinters” gene, has evolved over millions of years to equip humans to cope with changing and more hostile environments. “There is a fascinating link between factors that influence survival in ancient humans and the factors that contribute to athletic abilities in modern man,” said Professor North. Her discovery was that variations of the gene provided an important guide to whether an elite athlete has ability to be a power sprinter or an endurance performer. .. To answer the question as to why the variation occurred they looked at DNA samples from 96 individuals from around the world. “Most Africans have alpha-actinin-3, it’s the normal ancestral state. But as you move into European and Asian populations there is a marked increase in the number of people without the protein. In some Asian populations that number reaches 40 per cent, or even higher in some isolated populations,” she said.

318 Someone mentioned Amy Carter. And someone else mentioned the other day that this is the 35th anniversary of her father's epic struggle with the "killer rabbit".

Which did get me to reflecting sourly that, while Carter was a dreadfully bad President, there was on his watch none of the glitz and vulgar luxury indulgence and shameless mooching at public expense that we see now.

When the infamous rabbit attack occurred, Carter was on vacation. Which for him meant going to the family farm in Plains and going fishing on a swamp pond. Not exactly like the Obamas vacationing in Kailua in a beachside mansion that rents for ten thousand dollars a day.

Carter wasn't knocking back huge amounts of top shelf booze, lobster, and $200/lb Wagyu steaks every night. He wasn't jetting off with Rosalynn to Marbella and Gstaad.

Carter told Americans they had to save energy and he famously turned down the thermostat in the Oval Office and wore sweaters.

Whereas Obama tells Americans we must save energy, and pay far more for what energy we do use as prices "necessarily skyrocket" thanks to his policies. While Obama himself dials UP the thermostat in the Oval Office to where Axelrod says "you could grow orchids in there".

All in all, I'd take Carter back, thanks.

324 Nobody is talking about anybody or any group being other than human. Human variation is interesting. And not just interesting, but hugely important for human health. We should study elite athletes to figure out how we can use the genes identified to treat diseases and conditions like aging, cancer, muscle wasting, etc, etc When athletic success of one human group stands out that is a strong indication that there are underling genetic factors -- which makes it a more promising place to start looking. https://www.23andme.com/gen101/variation/speed/ Scientists have discovered a variation in a gene that seems to affect whether a person will make it to the top of their game, at least in sports like sprinting and weightlifting that require quick bursts of powerful force. The gene is called ACTN3, but its role in athletic performance has led some to dub it the "gene for speed." The ACTN3 gene encodes instructions for making a specific muscle protein. Researchers have found that some people have a non-working version of the gene that prevents it from making the muscle protein. More than a billion people worldwide have two copies of this variation in their DNA, causing their muscle cells to completely lack the protein. Lacking the ACTN3 protein does not seem to have any harmful health effects, but there does seem to be an effect on sports performance. Several studies have found that Olympic-level power athletes always have at least one working copy of the ACTN3 gene. After studying hundreds of athletes, scientists came to the conclusion that it is probably impossible for someone who lacks the ACTN3 protein to reach the top levels of performance in power sports. They were soon proven wrong. While looking for other genes that might determine athletic ability, a Spanish scientist hit upon an exception to the rule: a champion long jumper who has two non-working copies of ACTN3. The long jumper has a history of great achievement. He competed at the international level at the age of 16, and went on to compete in several European and World championships. He has also participated in two Olympic games. The fact that this long jumper is the first and so far only Olympic power athlete to be found who lacks the "gene for speed" is evidence for how important this gene is in determining this type of athletic ability. But his success is a testament to the fact that genes are not destiny.

336 We are just scratching the surface. More research is needed. But research is stifled cause of squeamish idiocy and people demanding that we not look in the Forbidden Closet of Knowledge. Who cares if certain populations turn out to have certain genes that make them taller or stronger or faster on average? I just want to know what those genes are so I can have them injected into me and my children. Bringing up the nazi bogeyman is retarded. The point is knowledge so we can improve lives. And clinging to this backwards ideas of ignoring genetic variation across human population is slowing progress and killing people. http://www.geneffect.com/actn3/en/actn3gene.html Scientists have found a variant, known as R577X, in the ACTN3 gene, that alters the way the body reads the ACTN3 gene instruction. As everyone has two copies of the ACTN3 gene, there is 3 different combinations or Sports Performance Types. XX - TYPE : You have the R577X variant present in both copies of your ACTN3 gene. Studies of elite level athletes from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) show, that this combination is associated with a natural predisposition to endurance events. RR - TYPE : You do not have the R577X variant present in either copy of your ACTN3 gene. The absence of the R577X variant from both copies of the ACTN3 gene is associated with a natural predisposition for sprint-power events. RX - TYPE : You have the R577X variant present in one of the two copies of your ACTN3 gene. If you have this combination you may be equally suited for both endurance and sprint-power events.

345 Of course. But it is culture and, especially in the case of the East Africans, location that selects the thousands of variants. If that gene had shown up in Norwegians, it probably wouldn't have done much. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo Precisely. Gene variants arise all the time, and then culture and geography favor some over the others, and over many many generations those cultural and geographical factors favoring some gene variants spread throughout the population and become a "trait." That's called evolution. It's how all ethnicities (in humans) and types (in animals) arise. Saying that genetic variants can be spread by cultural preferences does not negate the fact that the genetic variants exist.

358 It is really amazing how incompetent Chelsea is, given her ambition. She had some obvious career tracks: (1) Law school. America's Universal credential is perfect for her. She gets into some school (like, say, Yale with no grades and an alumni mother), gets her little degree and can write her ticket. Yeah, she'd get the job because her last name is "Clinton" but she'd have the veneer of credibility. (2) Housewife. I think her mom just beat it into her that this wasn't an option, but let's face it, it's something that she might have enjoyed, rather than failing at embarrassingly easy tasks like broadcast journalist or corporate board member. (3) Writer. Seriously, they can hire someone to write the actual words, all she needs is a byline. (4) Low-level corporate executive nobody. Why does she always have to have high-profile jobs? Even Michelle Obama, who had (marginal) credentials, was happy for the no-show "diversity" job.

362 I think genetics do determine athletic ability in large part, and also longevity. All the exercise and clean living will not totally overcome your DNA. All that being said, to be a world class athlete you have to work for it. You could have the gene and sit on your ass and achieve nothing. Too much emphasis on genetics takes away from the individual achievement of the runner. I hate that. And you cant discount opportunity either. RGIII, the NFL quarterback, grew up in New Orleans. And if it weren't for Katrina he would not have moved to Texas, where he learned to play football where high school football is king. He would be another kid in New Orleans And the last group of people who talked only about genetics were Nazis. You cant ignore effort and your cant ignore opportunity.

Posted by: Lincolntf Just because ignorant racists toss around a couple of scientific facts does not mean those facts are untrue. Fools and racists like to wield and misconstrue actual "facts" for nefarious purposes. Don't let them contaminate the very field of genetics. But shying away from acknowledging genetic exists, you're letting the bad guys (racists on one side and PC anti-science fearmongers on the other) dictate the narrative.

374 Different populations evolved different traits and behaviors. Northeast asians evolved fairer skin to produce more Vitamin D than southeast asians. That is a trait we can see -- skin color -- but also a hidden trait, the variation in Vitamin D production. When one population shows some outstanding and desireable trait -- long life, great strength, great endurance, great speed, disease resistance, whatever -- then we should study that population. It's head start on figuring out the underlying genetics. And it's better than just looking at anyone with the desireable trait regardless of race/ethnicity because they might have achieved that trait (long-life, speed, strength, fertility, disease resistance, etc) by different means. My understanding is that fair skin in northern europeans and northeast asians evolved separately due to the same selection pressure -- low sunlight. As a result the underlying genetics are different and it would be dumb to include both groups while trying to figure out the genetics of the trait.

I've never really encountered an actual racist in person (or even on the internet), but discussing DNA and genetics shouldn't necessarily be a "marker behavior" indicating racism on the part of the speaker. When a forensic anthropologist identifies the gender and race of a long-dead skeleton, to help police identify a possibly missing person or murder victim, is that forensic anthropologist being a racist for having the knowledge of what marker genes indicate the race of the victim? Of course not. But there are those who will say that there is no genetic component to ethnicity, despite such knowledge being used on a daily basis in forensics, pharmacology, medicine, etc. etc.

After deputizing a posse of 10,000 to keep vigil, no one ever saw the BLM in these parts again. With free range bovinae for as far as the eye could see, topsoil improved, turtles and other flora and fauna flourished, the soils cooled, trees grew, and the rains came. Within 50 years the desert had become like a garden of eden. Teaching the legend of Cliven Bundy is mandated course study in all public schools to this day (2114), and when asked what they want to be when they grown up its not unusual for a boy to declare "I want to be Cliven Bundy!" It is said that he stood 8 feet tall if he stood a foot and could split a cord of wood with his bare hands. Some say he still rides the hills with his giant ox protecting nature from an evil old Nevada Senator ghost, and if you listen closely the cows can be heard praising him with a loud mooooo off in the distance.

Having seen some of their female ski-athletes, it's not just genetics I'd like to see.

There used to be a website that accidentally logged pings from my IP.  It also featured photographs of attractive female athletes.  One scandi cross country skier just whipped off her top to change shirts.  Not at all self-conscious about showing her perky scandi nursing ornaments.  Ah, memories.

400 Humans are just like any other species, there is variation among populations. That variation is subject to selective pressures. A huge selective pressure is the geography where the population resides. Life is different in Japan vs Ethiopia vs Sweden vs Madagascar vs Polynesia. That's how we have different groups with different phenotypes - some of which are visible to the naked eye, most of which are not. When we are talking elite athletes we are talking a tiny subset of the population. But if a population has a higher % of beneficial genes for that trait in the population than the odds increase for having individuals with elite performance levels.

402 We also know different human populations mated with different pre-existing hominids in human pre-history. That's why all non-sub-Saharan Africans are 2-5% Neanderthal. That's why Polynesians are part Denisovan (another ancient hominid group that humanity wiped after mating with them.) Those other hominid groups introduced genes into the populations they mated with. And those genes are not spread uniformly across human populations.

404 But if a population has a higher % of beneficial genes for that trait in the population than the odds increase for having individuals with elite performance levels. Posted by: Costanza Defense this all started with the talk of who won the marathon. And a sentence like that takes away from the athlete's achievement. It wasn't about the athlete's choice. It isn't the priority he gave to training, the hours of his life, the over coming of injuries, the support of his family, the freedom to race by living in a country like ours. no its all his genes that is dehumanizing like he is a horse or a racing dog

405 Who are you talking to Lincolntf? I'm skimming, not clear if you are accusing me of being a racist or some white supremacist. I'm not white, btw. I'm a eurasian mutt. My mom was mostly white, I think. The Neanderthal and Denisovan stuff is fairly recent. It's really interesting. I don't understand the desire for ignorance. Facts are facts. What's true is what true. The story of human genetics, and the variation across time and geography is extremely interesting. The new discoveries of other ancient hominid species in our DNA is especially cool.

A Cro Magnon man walks into a bar.

The bartender says, " What can I get you to drink?"

The Cro Magnon says, " Yes if you please.  I would like a martini with a splash of vermouth , stirred not shaken with one olive . "

The bartender says, " No disrepect,  but I have to say I am really surprised by the sophistication of your order. "

The Cro Magnon man obviously perterbed replie,  " What do you think I am? A  Neanderthal ? "

409 401 You're sure you've never met a racist? Charmed life. I've met plenty. Posted by: Lincolntf Not an overt racist, at least. Obviously, one can't know what goes on in the hearts of men -- but ever actually meeting someone who said racist things? Never. And I don't visit the kind of Web sites where racists hang out either, I guess. One reads about racists in the news (like the Nazi guy that shot the Jewish center in Kansas recently), so obviously they exist, but to me they are some distant tribe I've never encountered.

410 No, it's not dehumanizing. Good for him for achieving his dream and maximizing his potential. Way to go. Looking at the genetics of athletic performance is not dehumanizing. It's just interesting. Tall people have more and better genes for height than short people (apart from malnutrition and early stunting disease. Strong people have more and better genes for strength. Fast people have more and better genes for speed. The important thing is figuring out what those genes are. It's no doubt quite complicated with hundreds of genes involved, some beneficial, some harmful for the trait. Elite athletes are born with higher potential than most, the right combination of more beneficial genes and fewer harmful ones for that trait. Still plenty of room for environment, hard-work, etc. But I'm more interested in identifying the genes.

411 The act of running for office as a a continuation of the family business, by all rights, ought to be regarded by the voters of this country as thoroughly unamerican. I mean, people should look at it as only slightly more appealing than electing a serial sex offender or a drug addict or a drunk who left a woman to drown in a car under a bridge. So, IOW, nepotism is no problem. Rock on, 'Murica.

414 its all his genes that is dehumanizing That's not my take. There's a saying, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." There's a corollary to that saying. Talent that works hard beats less-talent that works just as hard. What is talent? Some of it's genetics.

415 I'm sure that you all realize that Mrs Mezvinsky is going to be old enough for the Presidency in plenty of time for the 2016 election, yes? There's a Clinton getting set to run for Pres alright, just not the one we keep thinking of.

418 Nothing to do with you Costanza, unless you think it does. I was referring to the Race Uber Alles troll. I know genetics matter, I also know that shitbags like that like to use that fact to make their useless ignorant points, over and over again. Here's how it goes .... "Well, if you acknowledge their legs are different, then why can't I say their brains are different?". I was hoping to short-circuit a troll, not flame anyone.

420 Here's how it goes .... "Well, if you acknowledge their legs are different, then why can't I say their brains are different?". I was hoping to short-circuit a troll, not flame anyone. Posted by: Lincolntf The problem arises not in acknowledging differences (even possible differences in brains, as touchy a subject as that may be), but rather assigning a moral or hierarchical significance to the difference. A true evolutionary scientist knows that there is no such thing as "better" or "worse" among any species, or any trait, or any variation. That includes even comparing humans and animals. Many people assume (falsely) that humans are "more evolved" or "more advanced" or (jumping to conclusions) "better" in some way than "lesser" animals. But that's not how evolution (and genetics) works. If humans are "more advanced" than birds, for example, then why can they fly but we can't? If we're "more advanced" than a worm, then why can't we survive getting chopped in half (as some worms can)? Even with brain function: If we're "more advanced" than dogs, then why can't humans trail a scent for miles through the snow? The same principle applies to human variations: A short Eskimo is not "better" or "worse" than a tall Dinka tribesman; straight red hair is not "uglier" or "prettier" than curly dark hair; and Greco-Roman philosophical conceptions o the Universe are not better or worse that Aborigine mythology. But noting the lack of moral hierarchy among variations is not the same thing as denying that those variations exist. Tall Dinkas may not be "better" than short Eskimos, but the fact is that Dinkas are indeed taller than Eskimos. Red hair may not be objectively prettier or uglier than dark hair, but if you go to place where cultural norms value red hair, then in that society people are attracted to red hair; and if you go to, say, China, they'll look at your red hair and think you are a grotesque demon. But either way: Some people do indeed have red hair, while others do not. The same holds true for invisible traits. Some very specific ethnic groups -- the Tarahumara of Mexico, the Ethiopians of the East African highlands, etc. -- have evolved to possess a trait which enables endurance running. We can't see this trait, but the results of fair competitions speak for themselves. That doesn't mean Tarahumaras or Ethiopians are "better" people, it just means that commonly have a trait which other ethnicities tend to not have as much. There is no moral component to the existence or absence of this trait. Many people have tried to grapple with the possibility that brain differences could also exist among ethnicities by reframing the narrative and pointing out that perhaps the ways various types of brains interact with or conceive of the world and society are not "better" or "worse," just "different" -- hence the popularity of such concepts as "emotional intelligence" or "spiritual connectedness" being high among certain populations while being low in others, etc. It's an interesting way of looking at it, at least. Anyway, sure I guess there are racist trolls on the Internet, but we shouldn't necessarily condemn people as trolls until they actually reveal their trollhood.
