— DrewM This is so stupid, only a Republican could think of it.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said Sunday that he’s “beginning to believe” that falling in line with President Obama’s call to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans, then shifting the focus to reforming entitlements “is the best route for us to take” on the “fiscal cliff.”“There is a growing group of folks that are looking at this and realizing that we don’t have a lot of cards on the tax issue before year end,” Corker said on “Fox News Sunday.” He continued: “A lot of people are putting forth a theory, and I actually think it has merit, where you go ahead give the president the two percent increase that he is talking about — the rate increase on the top two percent — and all of a sudden the shift goes back to entitlements.”
Let me sum up:
Step 1: Unconditional surrender to Obama and the Democrats
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Massive entitlement reform that neither Obama nor any Democrat wants.
Why it's so obvious!
How exactly does giving in to Obama strengthen Republican's hand in getting entitlement reform?
The biggest problem Republicans in Congress have (other than being jackasses who couldn't negotiate their way out of a wet paper bag) is they are acting as if Obama really wants a deal and to get the deficit and debt under control. Hint: he DOESN"T.
What leverage will the GOP have after the fiscal cliff is off the table? The "debt ceiling"? You mean the thing that the GOP caved on two years ago and the only thing they got out of it was....the fiscal cliff we're not dying to avoid?
Yeah, they'll totally get it right this time. Just one more surrender and then Victory!

The situation will not change until Choom Boy and every worthless leech in D.C. has been swept away. That includes ridding the government of all their enablers in the various branches who are also slurping greedily at the public teat.
Of course it also means doing away with all the weak-kneed eunuchs in the media who support them (both on their side and -- supposedly -- ours) as well.
We don't have the will to do that. So we are doomed to sit by and watch as our once-great nation is transformed into a third-world shithole that will take its place among loser countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe and North Korea.
The Lords of Washington may "own" the collapse, but it is we who will suffer it.

Step 2: Tax revenue collapse
This is slow burn strategy that always plays well with the populist public. But the public is stupid and believes this will actually increase revenue. The media, the president, dopes like Krugman are all telling them so.
You can't fight that perception with words, it can only be fought with adverse results, and even then the Democrats trot out the "fairness" card in defense of failures.
I think Corker is saying the "Tax the rich" hill isn't the one to die on because all the perception influencing mechanisms are lined up against you.
Of course bleeding the rich doesn't result in entitlement reforms, because they lie and would repudiate any deals down the road. Indeed, entitlement reform isn't even Step 3 -- lowering the bar on what constitutes "the rich" is Step 3 after tax revenue declines.
The mechanisms to accomplish that are already in place and being activated. AMT, inflation, non-progressive taxes/fees/surtaxes, etc.
The Democrats, "rich" rhetoric aside, know where the money is and they're already preparing to come after it. The public won't believe its happening until they get the tax bill though and start feeling the squeeze.

"Starving the Beast" was Reagan's biggest blunder. Only when the American public is made to pay in full for its own government will it come to realize just how bad thing have gotten.
The Republican's should raise taxes, and well beyond Obama's demands. They should raise taxes and keep raising them until the deficit is eliminated in its entirety; and insist that every future increase in the debt will be paid for in advance by additional taxes.
Only then will the public come to appreciate the advantage of limited government.
There is no other way.

The 1% in Congress have not only money but power so it is important that all of the incentives that influence their behavior are structured properly. The Congress is the most hated institution in the country so there won't be many people who would be against it.
But the main reason I would like to see this happen is that instead of fighting over how we are going to rob and limit the freedoms of the people we would be arguing about how to rob and limit the freedoms of Congressmen. What is good for the goose...

When Boehner and the GOP had the opportunity to start us toward fiscal sanity and refuse to raise the debt ceiling did they fight?
No, they sought the path of least resistance and cobbled together this grand turd we now call the fiscal cliff.
Now they have to fight over this deal, will they fight?
No, they will cave because they do not have the will to fight, they will instead cobble together a deal wherein the President and the Democrats get what they want now and the GOP will get to fight over what they were promised at a later date.
And when the President reneges on the deal and puts up a fight over the "cuts" he agreed to he will say this or that has changed and he can now not support what he had agreed to previously.

This is the Democrat's unstated (for obvious reasons) long term strategy. The whole "tax the rich" thing is just a shiny populist object designed to consume media bandwidth. This was FDR's strategy too. Regressive type taxes/fees/surtaxes that disproportionately impacted the low/middle class increased about 250% with the New Deal.
Obama signaled this within the first two weeks he was in office with tax hikes on booze, tobacco, and gasoline taxes. Now we've got some new regressive medical device taxes as well, so they intend to come after the sick and elderly too.

Because the government as constituted presently is not about solving problems it's about securing political advantage.
As you say, 3.5T in spending - 2.4 Trillion in revenues = 1.1 Trillion Deficit.
1.1 Trillion Deficit + 50 Billion in new Spending - 160 Billion in new taxes (max) = 1Trillion dollar deficit.
Now this is very easy to explain and understand. I have yet to see anyone explain it this way. This would be perfect for a whiteboard.
Now the Democrats taxing and spending and obfuscating is well within their accepted principles and tactics.
The base principle of the Republican party was it's aversion to taxes now they will be going against a main tenant of their party.
And furthermore they know the amount of taxes to be raised is insignificant and will do not one bit of good, NOT ONE BIT and in fact it will make things worse as it will take money out of the hands of the very people who could best make use of it.

In fact, I see no evidence that Our Betters view it as the citizen's money. America, being the most advanced society in world history, and therefore the smartest, required the most advanced form of defeat in world history. We could not be defeated militarily, so our enemies defeated us socially. We've had our culture removed from us, in addition to our government.
You gotta hand it to them: they told us exactly what they were going to do and how they were going to do it: taking over education, media and the arts. Because we weren't willing to do what was necessary to remove the threat, we're now living the results. It was Kruschev, IIRC, who said, "Your grandchildren will be Communists." He was right.

I voted for Romney because, for some reason, I though he would do a decent job of managing the coming collapse and make it, perhaps, a tad less terrifying.
I really don't think any election between now and the (now inevitable) collapse, if we manage to get to the next election before the collapse, changes the nature of the coming suck-fest one bit. We're just too far gone for any single or even large group of elected officials to make a difference.

That's what the GOP is doing. Don't you get it? They're gearing up to giving the public what they want.
As H.L. Mencken said, "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard."
You're want to "let it burn" while simultaneously demanding that the GOP not let it burn.
Make up your mind. The only way to convince people once and for all is to give the Democrats what they want and let the voters see how their lives are impacted. When Obama gets his higher taxes on the "top 2 percent," then massive numbers of small businesses will make all their workers part timers, and the wealthy will move their capital offshore and invest in other countries.
The jobless rate will go up, and to compensate for lost revenue the Democrats will propose raising taxes on everyone. The price of everything will go up, and everyone who supported Obama will end up with less work, higher taxes to pay for their bennies, and higher prices for everything.
The burning is happening. Stop complaining.

Yes you can. You can deride it, ridicule those who believe in it 24/7 through the media, schools and art. Basically, you can brainwash a significant portion of the populace to believe anything you wish them to believe, then prop up a political candidate who reinforces that, and get him elected.

The Russians came out of the collapse of the Soviet Union somewhat better off. The place is an economic wild west of sorts now and the Kremlin isn't nearly as heavy handed as it used to be.
The Russian Federation is a "work in progress", and the final result remains to be seen though.
The Chinese are certainly better off now than with the old school Maoists, and they managed to accomplish that in a kind of stealth manner.
I'm optimistic about our post-collapse future. With all the Federal regulation and business roadblocks shucked aside, and saner "loser pays" legal system, we could have quite a Renaissance.

Always remember this:
Republicans are ignorant. They don't read AoS. They don't listen to Rush. They don't read the Washington Times.
Republicans get their news from the MSM.
I'll bet half of them don't even know what Benghazi is about or Fast and Furious or anything about what the Democrats are doing.
Never forget what was posted here. Most Republicans don't give a shit about what Reagan stood for. They vaguely remember that there were good times during his Presidency, but they don't make the connection to small government conservatism and limited, constitutional government, because we don't teach the Constitution in school and we don't teach citizens to value their independence from The State.
That's how hard it's going to be for us to turn this around. I'm of the opinion that the Let it Burn crowd is on the right track, and that the old admonition is the true one: "the people get the kind of government they deserve". People voted for this, let them get it in its full measure.
I'm a Palin guy through and through. I despised Romney and his "rising tide lifts all yachts" Republicanism, but I understood that he was far preferable to Obama and Obamacare. His loss came as a bit of a surprise to me. Now, matters are worse: let the voters get the unsustainable state they voted for.
Obama's aim was always to permanently enlarge government and to permanently enlarge the tax base to pay for it. However, what he is doing cannot work in the long run, and has always failed. The difference, after all, between Brezhnev's corrupt Soviet racket state and what Obama is doing is a question of degree, not of kind. And Obama's effort will end up in the same place as did Brezhnev's.

What I learned from John Roberts is that the concept of what is and what is not a tax is fluid.
Those people who don't pay "taxes" will see the price of groceries go up, utilities will skyrocket, Playstations, cable tv, and cell phone service will be luxury items again.
What we ALWAYS know to be true is that in any economic downturn, the poor bear the brunt of it eventually. They haven't yet. So far this has been the Easy Bake Oven recession. Wait until the real thing gets here.

Yep.

Gonna call the local medical marijuana dispensary (doubles as the libertarian headquarters) and volunteer / sign up for 2014 gotv duty.

Yep, everything that made the United States into the power that it once was, persists across the collapse.
We'll be dealt a strong hand right out of the gate.

The idea of LIB is to stand by, let the destruction happen, give the Democrats the blame and rebuild. Not to douse ourselves in oil and jump into the flames to show how we believe in bipartisan solutions.

Yes!!! Very well put.

This is how much the country has changed. Back in the mid to late 1950's that movie was shown in my grade school gym on the last day before Christmas vacation, right after the classroom parties where we got popcorn balls and cupcakes and exchanged presents with each other through a name drawing.. Every year. And then we would all sing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and get on the buses to go home, because it was the best day in the kid calender (as Ralphie would say).

the statement presumes the Democrats will get the blame

Here's how the Republicans and Democrats are going to solve this. Ready?
Retroactive taxation.
All current rates will stay the same....for now. But new tax rates will be applied to past years, they'll inform everyone what they owe in those past years, including those that have left the country, and the IRS will then work to extract that amount from everyone. See how simple?

Yeah, the GOP seems to be fighting hard to take the donkey punch on this.

I remember reading 1984, for the first time, when I was a teenager, and thinking it was so far-fetched. And then, only 10 years or so ago, reading Atlas Shrugged, and could see the validity, but still thinking it was so far-fetched. Now, we see where we are, and neither one is far-fetched at all! Gah! I'm reading Utopias Elsewhere right now!

I've always preferred the 3rd party strategy locally first, then nationally when the money backers finally see which way the wind is blowing. But if we're going to go through 30 years of pain, let's burn the GOP too.
So, what will the new party look like? Big tent, small tent? No socons? No fiscons? L/libertarians? Add some planks/groups? Hire some storytellers? Hard-core one issue (debt) until that get solved? What kind of governance structure that will keep idiots from rising to the top again?

I'm optimistic about our post-collapse future. With all the Federal regulation and business roadblocks shucked aside, and saner "loser pays" legal system, we could have quite a Renaissance.
We could've accomplished the same thing without the meltdown.

McCain said the same thing after the 2008 defeat. These people sleep pretty easy as their country implodes, don't they. Fu*k em all.

I'm very happy with it. "More unemployment" cracks me up. I think it's better than "Four something".
Good work, rickl. Valu-Rite, the songwriter's best friend.

So my first directive would be that blogs on the right must have a top-notch UI. Everything else flows from there.

Stay focused on the goal. Fighting to protect tax cuts on the rich (as dems and the media have sold it ) is a losing battle. Roll over and give him what he thinks he wants, the next fight is on the debt ceiling, once he has the higher taxes he said would solve the problem the argument will be on spending. The cut spending argument is a winner once taxes are off the table. The GOP simply holds out for the tax and spending reforms it wants. Obama will have to cave substantially.
