Government Spends $11 Million to Clothe Two People
— rdbrewer

The Department of Human Services granted $11 million dollars to Detroit to provide business attire to job seekers. Two people were helped.

The audit, conducted by the city's auditor general for the period from July 2009 to September 2011, found the department failed to control the operations and finances of a boutique that was to provide the clothes.

The department did not safeguard grant funds or create an inventory for the clothing, the audit found.

Among the most telling findings, which will be discussed today during a City Council committee meeting, is that a third-party contractor advanced $148,000 to a downtown Detroit clothing store and opened an account, but did not include the city on the account.

. . .

The audit is the latest finding against the city's Department of Human Services, which has been under scrutiny for chronic mismanagement of federal funds. Many of the department's leaders have departed since an internal investigation was launched last year, including an inquiry into the purchase of $182,000 worth of high-end furniture for a department office. In 2009, the department received more than $11 million in stimulus funding and created a service center.

That's okay, though, because good intentions are what really matters. According to the audit, the DHS grant was supposed to help 400 people. You see, it's just that the funds were mismanaged.

400 people. That comes out to $27,500.00 per person. See, it was a good plan. It was just mismanaged.

Nothing criminal here. Move along.

Interesting thing- my workplace participates in a charity that provides "gently used business clothing' for job seekers. This program is very obviously replicating something that's already being provided by the private sector.

"Good intentions" are how you lure in the rubes. I know you're smarter than that.

The whole point of these programs is to award otherwise-unemployable friends and relatives of the DHS city jobs, with no-copay insurance, city vehicles, generous PTO, and *pensions*.

(Aside, there's a private organization called "Dress for Success" that provides low-income women with business clothes. But they seem to expect that you're doing something to improve your situation--community college, computer literacy, showing up, etc.)

Posted by: HeatherRadish at March 07, 2012 08:07 AM (ZKzrr)

28 You are looking at it all wrong. The point of the program was not to help people dress better and get jobs. It was to create an office that would be staffed by government workers who are public employee union members. Couple hundred grand In furniture I am sure was properly sourced and was a good value for the people. I am sure. With a corrupt government like in Detroit it would be a waste to try to prepare people for private sector jobs that simply do not exist. Just spreading the wealth around. What, like the Koch brothers needed that money more than the poor in Detroit?

43 This is a common scam.  Someone with connections writes up a grant proposal and it sails through the approval process.  The money is delivered to cover the items in the grant, but, the audit process is so slow and poorly handled, they just steal the money and go on.  They buy $100,000 of furniture from Uncle Joey for $500,000.  They get $5,000 worth of office supplies from Uncle Sal for $35,000.  They get $10,000 worth of sample clothing from Uncle Mort for $50,000.  Then when the grant's purpose is done, the useful items are sold to folks for pennies on the dollar and trash the rest.

We know this but the average apolitical voter just ignores the whole game. It's work to have to scrutinize every damn thing local pols come up with. Most just accept the idea that some grease is going to be spread.

The idea here is not to show surprise! and alarm! at bureaucratic graft, the point here is to make the premise explicit. Embarrass the fuckers who perpetrate it and force voters to confront it.

If we want to fight this crap you have to point out as often as possible why giving people power, especially for supposed charitable reasons, is a bad thing.

I respectfully disagree.

There are two types of people in Detroit: those who are decent and cannot get out (usually the elderly) and the rest.

The rest support themselves through:
-drug dealing
-home invasions
-car jacking
-general "theft"

They are fully capable of buying their *own* illegal handguns, thank you very much.

Of course, it's much harder for the baby momma's, they do of course rely on public assistance, but help themselves and increase their income by having more kids.

/wait, that doesn't qualify as being self sufficient?

This happens ALL THE TIME. At the local college where I worked, two successive secretaries were fired, then arrested, for embezzling funds from a federal program. No one cared until someone got mad at them and squealed. The feds swooped in and then left. What is going to happen, who knows.

It's just a redistribution scheme.

205 That misogynist, H8r, fascist blowhard Rush yesterday (I think) had some story about "food justice" and how food was the last of the basic needs to not be government controlled. We want food justice and we want it now!

He was quoting from an article (LA Times?) wherein the person quoted in the piece stated they grew up eating Tuna Helper...prepackacked boxed foods because it was cheap and didn't take a lot of time.  You see, Momma was out working her fingers to the nub and needed quick, inexpensive foods to feed the kids.  And horrors, they just couldn't seem to find the money (or time, I guess) to prepare vegetables.  I'd love to see a true study of how hard it is to get good produce, even in urban areas.

Oh yes, it's coming.  Food Justice with Moochelle flying in with her red cape and SEIU buddies to save the day.  Fists stuffed with taxpayer cash.

291 #287  Here are your choices:

1.  The rich guy who made money on his business expertise and knows how to make said money grow,  even during tough times.

2. The rich guy who made his money by lobbying, various books and speeches which took money from gullible conservatives, and who was on the Fannie Mae payroll when the bubble was growing.

3.  The former rich guy who  is now squandering his children's education money and future inheritance in a misguided belief that he can win.

4. The rich guy who made a lot of money from a newsletter with anti-Semitic statements by some of its contributors.

BOOM!

Earlier today, BuzzfeedÂ’s Ben Smith announced on Twitter that video researcher Andrew Kaczynski had released “the mysterious Harvard/Obama/race video that the Breitbart folks have been talking about.”

The video, which Kaczynski says was “licensed from a Boston television station,” shows a young Barack Obama leading a protest at Harvard Law School on behalf of Prof. Derrick Bell, a radical academic tied to Jeremiah Wright--about whom we will be releasing significant information in the coming hours.

However, the video has been selectively edited--either by the Boston television station or by Buzzfeed itself. Over the course of the day, Breitbart.com will be releasing additional footage that has been hidden by Obama's allies in the mainstream media and academia.

Breitbart.com Editor-in-Chief Joel Pollak and Editor-at-Large Ben Shapiro will appear on The Sean Hannity Show to discuss the tape. The full tape will be released tonight on Fox News' Hannity.

The remarks from Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) are surprising because Republicans have been calling for the law's repeal ever since it was passed. In his opening statement at a hearing on the Health and Human Services Department's proposed budget for FY 2013, Shelby suggested lawmakers should start taking a hard look at the impact of repealing the law as the Supreme Court this month prepares to hear hours of arguments for why it should strike it down."
