Someone else may need to correct me, but I believe there's varying ways to measure our debt, and "Public debt" does not include the money borrowed from the SocSec trust fund (and such) that will also need to be payed back.

27 21 - I still see plenty of Obama '08 stickers, no '12s that I can recall. The rusty old tinbuckets with the '08s, I can somewhere in my mind accept the possibility that they are so discouraged and bewildered that they can't quite call forth the energy to even remove the awful things. If I saw a '12, I think I'd have to stop them and ask "what didn't you learn yet? What could possibly expect to get better THIS time?"

33 I worry about what presidential pardons are going to be issued as obama leaves  office in 2013.  Remember, Holder is the asshole who got the marc rich pardon through during the end of the clinton era.  A pardon for Mumia anyone?  I hope someone is paying attention to this.

Even if obama is defeated he will still continue to do damage to the country.  Think of how GWB conducted himself after he was out of office, do you think obama will sit on the sidelines and keep his lying mouth shut?  I don't think so.  He will be on TV and in the news constantly whipping up class and racial divisions.  Not good.

A must-see: Harvest of Despair, mentioned in the other thread, on the Ukrainian famine engineered by Stalin.

Two salient points: a Ukrainian describing armed resistance to the Reds by a farmer, and Stalin's repeated raising of taxes (in grain) on kulaks, while offering taxes one-third less to collective farms. Once he'd collectivized all of the farms, he of course raised their taxes too. Sound familiar?

Nice Sock.  Sadly it seems this is going to stick too. I was just somewhere very very very rural watching local TV's afternoon news program and they had a "citizen commentator" on who was foaming at the mouth of the dem's inability to "compromise" like the "republicans" (clearly he's unaware of the Tea Party Freshman).

In any case, he ranted on about how the Republicans "Compromised" by nominating someone who most Americans believe is a member of a "religion considered a cult."  I went slack jawed.

Bonus points! This program was produced by the local state college (for their Journalism Class.)  The argument got only stupider there.  I hope they get failed.

--The accommodation of the actual Welsh language in Wales is even more extreme and absurd than that of the French language in Canada.  Welsh was effectively extinct for a while, but now all signage has to have Welsh on it.  At least in Canada there are some places where people speak French, and only French.  I don't think anyone speaks Welsh and only Welsh.

69 You know, there's a reason the spending madness started right before Otard was elected. Dem Congress and Senate. All the obsession with labeling everything by the President annoys the piss out of me. It's Congress + Senate + President. When Otard got in he had both Democrat, so of course we're fucked. But after Congress went R (barely), the Pres and senate could keep screwing us by blocking budgets. I get mad when people just say "Bush economy" or "Obama economy" because it's not just misleading, it obscures a large part of the problem. If we elect Rombley but switch the house back to D's, we're still screwed.

74 Welsh language, proper, is VERY different than English, a Celtic tongue as opposed to Teutonic. Serbian vs Croatian (vs Bosnian)? Seemed to me fairly mutual intelligible, with some notable vocab differences (kruh/hleb for bread, for example) and one significant pronouncing difference -- Croats go more nasally liquid, say miljeka not mileka for milk etc. And of course the alphabet issue, Serbs do Cyrillic and the others Roman. But one could argue that dialectal difference within Croatian are about as marked. My mother was Dalmatian (down, Barky, down) and when she was talking with her hometown girlfriend it sounded quite different in cadence and had lots of vocabulary borrowed from the Italians. I never learned to speak any variation of it myself so how the hell do I know for sure?

Posted by: Mama AJ at April 22, 2012 08:40 PM (XdlcF) No I'm saying that nobody cares about reality so the trajectory will not change. The article in the OP is *terrific* except for the fact that it gets the basics wrong. And it could get them right, except people *want* to talk about one person instead of the ideologies behind the parties. And as long as people stick to the people and not the ideas, we're fuicking boned. I'm also in a shitty mood because everything sucks and is broken, but the fact remains, brilliant idea, terminally flawed. And I can shout about it until I'm blue in the face, nobody listens to me either. But stuff like "Bush did it" and "Obama did it" just lines up partisans and accomplishes nothing. And no, I'm not a "Moderate" or a squish, but I also don't want my country to be destroyed by fucking Soros' gang because my side is too stupid to state the damned facts. (cuss whine moan complain)

98 Good Lord, from The Guardian: As many as 100,000 women in Britain have undergone female genital mutilations (FGM) with medics in the UK offering to carry out the illegal procedure on girls as young as 10, it has been reported. Investigators from the Sunday Times said they had secretly filmed a doctor, dentist and alternative medicine practitioner who were allegedly willing to perform FGM or arrange for the operation to be carried out. The doctor and dentist deny any wrongdoing. The practice, which involves the surgical removal of external genitalia and in some cases the stitching of the vaginal opening, is illegal in Britain and carries up to a 14-year prison sentence. It is also against the law to arrange FGM. The procedure is widespread across parts of Africa. Victims are rarely given anaesthetic and frequently suffer long-term damage and pain. Research suggests that every year more than 22,000 girls in the UK and up to 6,000 in London are at risk of the potentially fatal procedure. The Metropolitan police said that since 2008 it had received 166 reports of people who feared they were at risk of FGM. Across all 43 forces in England and Wales, no one has ever been convicted of the offence, according to the Sunday Times. The newspaper added that only two doctors had been struck off by the General Medical Council since 1980. According to Forward, a charity which campaigns against FGM, an estimated 100,000 women in the UK have undergone mutilation. The model Waris Dirie, who was mutilated as a child, is a vociferous opponent of the practice. Calling for a crackdown on FGM, she said: "If a white girl is abused, the police come break down the door. If a black girl is mutilated, nobody takes care of her. This is what I call racism." http://tinyurl.com/7yzooa6

This Week's Sign that the Apocolypse is Upon Us:  A college president sends out an email to the whole university, reminding them to wear a sweater.

Dear Members of the Campus Community,

The temperature is dropping, and most of the buildings on campus have transitioned to air conditioning this past week.  I was on campus today, and it was quite cool, so I suggest you wear a sweater and/ or jacket tomorrow.

Because our 53 buildings on campus are heated and cooled by a central steam plant, we cannot quickly regulate the temperature as we do in our homes.  Once the whole campus is transitioned to air conditioning, the buildings will remain cool until the fall when we return to heat.

Best wishes,

President Carriuolo

If O wins it will be like cinco de mayo every day. Cinco de mayo is right around the corner

If I'm reading you right, that means drink early, drink often, and drink heavily.

193 How is the total public debt from Presidents 1 to 43 only $6.3 trillion when the current debt is over $15 trillion?

Posted by: John Browncorn at April 22, 2012 07:31 PM (ymH/

A bit of creative licensing. Presidents 1-43 had only the publicly-held portion of the debt held against them, while Teh SCOAMF has both publicly-held and intragovernmental debt (Social Security, Medicare, and the other "Trust Funds") held against him in an inflated number (I've got that likely SCOAMF debt as just a tick over $6.00 trillion)

That's not exactly great news for Teh SCOAMF, however.  An apples-to-apples publicly-held debt comparison would be $6.3 trillion from the first 43 Presidents and somewhere around $5.4 trillion from Teh SCOAMF's first term based on over $4.5 trillion of the $5 trillion add to the total public debt being of the publicly-held variety.  That would be double what Bush 43 added in 8 years.

BONING SPEED!!!!

Fossil fuels causing catastrophic wealth creation. And that's a big problem. As too many Americans have bad taste. And craft

Man walks into a bar in College Station. "I just heard a great Aggie joke."

Barkeep, a big burly dude, scowls. "I'm an Aggie. My two buddies," he points at two  big ol' boys down the bar, " are Aggies too. Are you sure you want to tell that joke?"

"Sure. I'll tell it real slow."

216 168 ROMNEY ON OBAMA: “I think he’s a nice person. I just don’t think we can afford him any longer.”
---

I wonder if there's a little strategery going on here. If Romney keeps repeating over and over that he thinks Ozero is nice, then doesn't it make Barky look even worse when he resorts to his typical rude, prickly, divisive rhetoric?

Posted by: Mayday at April 22, 2012 09:47 PM (orrLR)

--Think about (not sure if you're male or female) when you hear a woman you like tell you, "You're a nice guy, but . . ." While it's extremely disconcerting, at the same time you can't be enraged then and there, because she did not directly insult you.  What Romney is doing rhetorically is probably like that, and in a way probably getting at what you suspect.

P.S.  Interesting that this site has "Romney" in the spell-check.

218 219 - I know some people have strong feelings about it. But I would think if one's tastes run towards the sword and sorcery and sex and slaughter and any number of other s words, I'm not sure what's not to like. For anyone who has read the books, I can't imagine there's anything not to like either.
