Canadians have some sort of 'tort reform' up there, don't they?
I mean.....I know that you can't sue doctors and hospitals for very much at all.
There are caps on how much you can sue for.
It's because of their National Healthcare system, though.
Think of how many layers of 'extra cost' are added....to everything....here, in the US, because of liability insurance.
I don't think that it is anti-capitalistic, or anti-free market, to wish for some sort of tort reform here.
We need to do something.
Buying a product or service, should not be like buying a lottery ticket.

Yep. Ontario. The first thing you have to understand is that there is no "Canadian Health Care System." Each province has their own, and it's based on residency, not citizenship, so my family all have OHIP health cards.
But I also kept my Blue Cross coverage.

Not to worry! Here in Buffalo, I just saw on the local news that the govt is spending millions of dollars to renovate some obsolete skyscraper downtown, that third such project in recent years. The reporter literally summed up the story by saying "So the future of Buffalo is bright!"
Wow. They've been doing the exact same kind of stuff for decades, and people have fled the city and area in droves do to lack of economic opportunity the whole time.
A few renovated old buildings is what it takes to "make the future bright"? (They REALLY believe that, BTW). It's the very definition of insanity, and if you want to see where the whole country is headed during Obama's second term just drop on in sometime. There's some really nice old hotels that have been restored using millions in tax dollars to stay in...

Yes, it's like the socialist indoctrination course my kid was required to take at the local SUNY. They literally talk about solving the problems of the local communities by doing things like having the locals clean up a vacant lot, and growing food on it.
So... they're squatting on somebody else's property (but at least they're cleaning it up) and producing goods in an extremely inefficient manner - and THAT'S the way to deal with chushing poverty? The idea that somebody should - I don't know - maybe "start a business" to help the economy is never even considered.
It's all about forming a gang and forcing your will, with these people. Hell, I'm surprised they don't object to these people actuallydoing the work to grow the food. I suppose they get dispensation for it's profound inefficiency, and some "evil" corporation doesn't make money off it.
And yes, they're serious about this stuff.

Rep Darrell Issa proposes hearing on DC Commuter tax
“I think we should, after the election, start thinking about how we’re going to deal with the only place that doesn’t have the ability to tax people who earn their income in that place,” Issa said.
Maybe he is sincere. Maybe it has nothing to do with the prospect of watching Democrats like Jim Moran, Gerry Connolly, Steny Hoyer and Chris van Hollen argue that Federal employees who live in Maryland and Virginia should not have to pay DC income tax.
Posted by: Jim in Virginia at July 19, 2012 02:43 PM (jiKVm)
Decades ago it was the same: $1US got you $1.25 Canadian. There's a joke in the movie "Canadian Bacon" that makes reference to the Canadian dollar being worth less.
In recent years, I recall the Canadian dollar being worth somewhat more. Right now, as you say, it's close to even, so that's actually an improvement.
But, yeah, I had (somehow!) forgotten about the oil sands. That probably makes a big difference, per capita. I'm amazed they get away with it, with all the greenies up there.
Posted by: Optimizer at July 19, 2012 02:43 PM (As94z)
If only we were more socialist like Canada, Cuba, Red China, or Burma/Myanmar, we'd be so much richer!
I don't doubt the likelihood that the figure ratio could be credible ($385K "median" US income, pfft). But the US government figures themselves are not credible, only what Obama's administration wants to project or is willing to admit. Who's to say that Canada doesn't fudge on their numbers, as well?
That our insatiable national debt has made us poor is a no brainer, except that revisionist Keynesians insist that more debt is more wealth.
So Obama beams, shaking hands on a deal with Mexico to supply illegal aliens with US food stamps. Hell, Mexico isn't having a drought. Let THEM fork out the food stamps for OUR unemployed citizens.
