Great Commercial
— LauraW

Former blogger Dave At Garfield Ridge wrote a post years ago about how he was getting tired of raiding his 401K and working as a manwhore to be able to afford razor heads.

Or something to that effect. It was a long time ago. And since then, blades have only gotten more expensive.

Until now.

That young man is going places.

Anybody remember their first razor experience from back when the things were primitive, dangerous weapons?

My grandfather had this thing called a 'safety razor' that had the double-leaf opening on the top that you fed a double-sided blade into. He also used the old round brush and mug of soap to lather with.

Sleepover, 1985: a young hunchback realizes she did not bring any of her modern little plastic shavers to her grandparents' home, and tries out the old 'Safety Razor.'

And yeah, my grandparents had that slot in the back of their medicine cabinet.

13 I think I've used every style of razor EXCEPT straight-edge. The Gillette SensorExcel was very good - but a mess to clean and it took too long to shave. I mostly quit until last month when I got a new Norelco entry level electric to review. Works pretty good and I'm shaving daily since it's so quick and so little fuss.

I still have one of those. They came in what was known as the "ditty bag" in boot camp.  I no longer use it though.

I currently use disposable plastic twin blade razors like he is talking about in the video. I got a who bag of them for cheaper than shit in Wall Mart.

Oh, I also use the mug and soap with a brush. I heat water in the microwave and soak the brush in that while taking my shower. Once you have started using hot lather you will never go back to the cold shit out of a can.

71 Sorry to O/T, but I just came back from the Worst.Dinner.Ever. with my husband.

I agreed to meet him at the bar of our club and have drinks with him and a friend.  After the friend left, he suggested we just order dinner from the bar, which I don't care for.  I gave in.

And then, The.Libtard.Fuckwit.From.Hell sitting at my right side let loose.

He was ranting about Booosh, Rush, etc. etc.  He was well into his cocktails.

Then he made the mistake of leaning into my personal space and asking what I thought about A-Stan.  I informed him our son, and only child, is serving there in the Marines.

The bastard went off about how could our son want to join after "Booosh's Evil Wars" and and I gently and quietly tried to put him some knowledge.

Then he asked me what I thought about Rush going after the Innocent Coed.

I once again tried gently, and quietly to explain how I didn't approve of her being called a slut, but what about all the conservative women, etc. etc.

He raised his voice to me, and then

Mr. D'oh leaned behind me over to the douche, and proceeded to put him some more knowledge.  At this point, the entire bar had gone silent and was looking our way.  I realized The Douche was drunk and things were only going to escalate, so I kicked the shit out of Mr. D'oh's shin to silence him.

I ended up eating less than half my meal, and brought the rest home.  I left in my own car to come back here and vent.

The Douche, it turns out, is a retired attorney for the Tribune Co.  He keeps a house in DC and "slums" down here when he feels like it.

And "surprise!" he's divorced.

He was totally condescending to the two of us because we're....shocka!!...Southerners.

Now I'm wondering why my husband hasn't made it home yet.

Same here except that I inherited the one my grandfather used when he died in 1974.  He would teach me dirty words but that I should never use them in front of women - especially grandma - because he would get into trouble.  To this day, I rarely curse in mixed company.  It's made of silver but I have no idea how much it's worth.  It's sentimental value is priceless.

Gawd knows how many made up stories Mr. D'oh used over the years with women for the nasty scar he still sports on his left arm.

Was just wondering why there aren't any "green" razors. Then remembered, filthy hippies don't use the product so there would be no demand.

Slightly OT, but I do have 'green' matches. Diamond greenlight(tm) to be exact. You wouldn't think ANY match could be touted as being green, but you would be wrong.

The craphole pizza place my daughter likes must have had drunk skank night, because there were hordes of drunk ugly women roaming around. Then the drunk ugly men started to join them. IT took forty minutes for the pizza place in back of the bar to make our pizza, and I was wishing we had a gun rack in our Yukon. But it was nowhere near as bad as your evening. And yes, hit your husband with a bar stool if he ever suggests eating at the bar again, although after this evening, he better have the sense not to suggest it.

149 Double Edge Safety Razors are great but you have to practice and go slow at first while you are learning.  There is a much narrower margin for careless passes or sideways movement of the razor.  It is a real art and science to shave with one and the benefit is that you can afford a new blade every day if you so desire.  A badger brush, mug, and English shaving cream take things to a whole other level.

One of my life's little joys is letting my beard grow over a three day weekend, and on the last day doing the whole shaving ritual with hot towels and the Truefitt and Hill pre-shave oil, a boiling mug of water, Truefitt's West Indian Limes or Trumper's Almond shaving cream tub, and a brand new derby blade just out of the wax wrapper.  It makes a man feel like a million bucks.

I recommend that any man with a full face of beard hairs get involved in wet shaving.  Start just on Saturdays and Sundays and take your time until you are proficient and you'll never want to shave with a $5 cartridge razor blade ever again.  There is a whole online movement ad several merchants who will sell all that you need to get started.

150 When I graduated from HS in 67 I was 6-2 and 175 lbs. And shaved a couple times a month. In boot camp we were made to shave every morning. I had a double-edged safety razor. It was a precision tool which could go anywhere from shaving hair off at the surface of your face skin to taking flesh off in chunks to the bone in increments of a few thousandths a click. When I turned that knurled dial it was a sound akin to pumping a 12 gauge shotgun. That was one lethal device and it looked dangerous just laying on the sink. The company fell in each dawn and 75% of us had multipurpose paper plastered in bloody strips on our faces. But we soon sweated it off. When I became a civilian again I let it grow and in no time looked like ZZ Top. Started shaving again in 79 when I went back in the Navy. Since chemo and radiation 6 years ago not much need to shave. A throwdown razor lasts a year.

My husband took up this "hobby" a year or two back............and never stopped.  He swears by the whole wet shave thing.  He has a "mug warmer" that he sits his bowl on to get it all nice and warm for the making of the lather.  I don't think you could force him to use a "modern" razor and shave creme now.  I do have to admit that his face is far smoother and softer after wet shaving than it ever was before he shaved with this method.  He does draw the line at using a straight razor though - the safety razor is as close to retro as he will go.

Posted by: GrandeMe at March 07, 2012 07:14 PM (gavWU)

153 I still carry a small scar on my upper lip from attempting Dad's safety razor at age 12. In my 30's I used safety razors again for a while and I still use my brush and mug from the 80's. But I concede that even though foam in a can is a failure, the Trac II head was a major improvement in shaving tech. The shaver itself is a beautifully balanced bit of German crafting, buy the way. But the head is Trac II.

Hey, don't knock the double edged safety razor.  I have one from the 1940's that i use every day, and it is absolutely wonderful.  The best part?  I can buy ten replacement blades for it for 85 cents at Wal Mart.  The cartridge style razors cost $15 for a pack of four.

Since I started using my safety razor, I get closer shaves and for far cheaper than the modern cartridge style razors, with only one downside - you have to know what you're doing.  It takes a few shaves to learn how to shave properly without giving yourself razor burn with the old school style safety razors.  With a cartridge style, you can run it across your face however you want with little consequence.  Once you figure out your contours, though, there is nothing like a safety razor, and the price is hard to beat.  I highly recommend every man on this blog go get one and try it out.  You won't be sorry.

My grandfather was a barber and used a straight razor. My dad used a 'safety razor'; I remember Mom getting blades at the drugstore. My brother uses an electric.

Evolution or devolution, not sure. As the last two had/have full beards for considerable periods, but the first one was an old-school BARBER, they didn't inherit granddad's attitude on shaving.

158 Thanks to the internet you can still buy high quality safety razors and safety razor blades and they shave better than ever.  There's a bit of a learning curve involved, but again the internet is your friend and there are plenty of tutorial videos on youtube.  Shaving can be a fun (and inexpensive) hobby.  It doesn't have to be a costly chore.

Anyway, best of luck to this guy.
