— andy Thoughts On the NRA's Statement
For as long as I can remember, the NRA's slogan has been, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". Casting blame towards Hollywood and video games doesn't really fit in here, and I think it was very shortsighted, as was calling for a federal program to put security guards in schools.
If schools want security guards, they can hire them now. Federalizing this and making it mandatory, which appears to be the NRA's position, really is a solution in search of a problem.
As I said earlier this week, and as author Larry Correia pointed out in his excellent and now 10x-linked-at-the-HQ blog post, the policy change we need is simple: put an end to schools as "gun-free zones" ... either through hiring security guards or allowing concealed carry ... and this problem fixes itself.
Beware Of Laws Made In Haste
I had this piece in the queue before the shootings in Newtown, but is seems even more relevant now.
New York Democratic Rep. Steve Israel is calling for legislation to renew the federal ban on plastic guns, according to his official congressional website.“Recent reports have pointed to the new possibility of building guns at home using a 3-D printer,” Israel’s website states. “Right now, plastic guns are illegal under the Undetectable Firearms Act, but this law is set to expire next year.”
Umm, yeah. As the article points out, these "plastic guns" don't exist and have some serious technical hurdles to overcome with ammunition to be completely undetectable. So let's ban them!
They said the same thing when the ZOMFG!!11! PLASTIC GUN!! Glock was first introduced, even though that thing has more steel in it than an S&W Chief's Special.
Second only to the average congressman in ignorance about guns is, of course, the media.

Concealed Carry Tip For the 'Ettes
Via Jake in Idaho comes this helpful video on concealed carry in a dress.
Christmas Hunting Traditions
When I was growing up, Christmas day always involved guns and hunting. In the perfect scenario, I'd wake to find Santa had left a long, skinny box under the tree. Green and red were the colors of the season ... green meant Remington and red meant Ruger or Winchester.
Then in the afternoon, after we were done with presents and lunch, we'd take to the field. Most of the time it was in pursuit of small game like squirrels, quail or the like since by then the deer tags had long been filled, but it was a great tradition that, unfortunately, I wasn't able to replicate with my kids.

Tips
Thanks for all the tips. I'm working hard to clear the backlog.

After all, comrade, when a Star Chamber has been approved by the House and Senate (as a necessary tool in the arsenal of what is becoming a pseudo-european democracy), is it not but a short step to disarming recalcitrant and unreasonable citizens?

Casting blame towards Hollywood and video games doesn't really fit in here, and I think it was very shortsighted
For all the posts and commenters who were pointing out the mfm's glorification of these nutjob shooters with their wall to wall coverage, its amazing how many here lose their shit when the head of the NRA goes and does something similar. He did a redirect at the media, and its not a statement made for us. Blaming hollywood and video games is as ridiculous to us as blaming guns, and that is what needs to get out there from his message.

What could possibly go wrong with yet another federal intrusion into the "local" school system? I am sure one of their "powers" would be to monitor any teachers teaching actual American History or mentioning the roots of the 2nd Amendment, and forwarding their names, photos, and addresses to the TSA, BATFE, DHS, and DoJ!

LaPierre can't point out that shooters carry more than one gun. He simply mutters 20 times, "I don't think that makes a difference." He manages to say Columbine happened during the Brady ban. But doesn't say WHY it made a difference.
Here's my suggestion, since I prefer Gun Owners of America for defending gun rights to the NRA anyway (their incumbency preference protects too many Dimms over real 2nd Amendment advocates). Larry Correia for President of GOA. Get someone who actually can TALK about guns in the position instead of simple platitudes.

There still is a greater connection between the First Amendment rights (which is an absurdity all it's own) having a responsibility for this shooting than there was a connection to the Second Amendment rights of the shooter. NOTHING ADAM LANZA DID WAS PROTECTED BY THE SECOND AMENDMENT. The second amendment didn't facilitate his access or his motive.
Adam Lanza could have just as easily murdered his next door neighbor and stolen his neighbors guns. Or he could have also stolen his neighbors car and decided to run down people waiting at a bus stop. But would we be having a conversation about Car Ownership right now if that was the case?
No, this IS a first amendment issue. Let's get it out in the open. Let's ask WHY HOLLYWOOD should be allowed to glorify the very guns that the Hollywood 'Elite' believes is so evil.

True...but an AR-15 is a dandy deer rifle with the right rounds so that argument doesn't hold water either. Keep in mind we aren't trying to convince 2A supporters to back us, we're trying to convince the cake eaters that we aren't a threat. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at December 23, 2012 07:37 AM (yh0zB)
I think they were both great ideas, 1) There's been security guards at some schools for years, here in Dallas the school district even has it's own police force. They don't sit there at the schools just to show they're there, they show up randomly at schools and generally just patrol like regualr cops except the schools are their beat. They've had that since 1969. Plus, for years liberals have always said anyone who wants to cut govt spending hates policemen and firemen, turn the tables on them, why won't they spend the money to protect little children who just want to learn?
And 2) I don't think that video games or movies cause violence and i doubt the NRA does either, but then, the gun grabbers know taking away "high capacity magazines" won't stop a mass murderer either, they're just going for what they can now and then they'll move on and that's the point of going after video games and movies, show them that when they go after you, you'll go after them every step of the way.

That's 'cause they're acting in their interests, and not necessarily in yours and mine. Occasionally, the interests of the USCoC and mine intersect nicely. I'm sure they and the WSJ editorial page have even convinced themselves that dismantling the US-Mexico border is the best for all Americans...and not just those who exploit illegal alien labor to drive down American wages. More often (often enough that am a member), the NRA and I agree, but both are captive to Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy. The NRA's pre-Heller antics left no doubt of that.
