Hail on a Plane
— Dave in Texas

When the tornadoes and storms were ripping through the Dallas Ft. Worth area on Tuesday, someone on an American Airlines flight to Boston was stuck on the tarmac when the hail started coming down and pounding the aircraft.

I don't know how big the hail was, but the splashes get pretty interesting around 1:20. And the hammering sound speaks for itself.

It's amazing that so many tornadoes hit this densely populated area, that so few people were injured. I've heard about 2 F2s and at least one F3. Gabe attributed it to early warning, I kicked in that a local weather guy on the most popular AM station in the area was warning about this crap on Tuesday.

At any rate it could have been way worse. This morning the big story is lost pets from the tornadoes. Which is bad, but not as bad as it could have been.

Heard the guys on WBAP say only thing worse than being in a plane on the ground wishing you were in the air, is being in a plane in the air, wishing you were on the ground.

7 I was in Bowling Green, KY when a golf ball sized hailstorm hit. I was 10 seconds late in moving my car behind the motel and it got pounded to shit and a cracked windshield. No way was I gonna run into golf ball hail to move the old beater. You might as well get beaten by a ball-peen hammer.

The whole town looked like God blasted it with 0 buckshot. Every car in several car lots were totaled. Every plastic gas station sign was blasted through and full of holes. The city was a real mess.

Hint: if you're ever driving in an urban area at the onset of a storm immediately seek a bank drive thru or some other sturdy overhead structure. I'm leery of recommending gas pumps with canopies because I've seen many of them blown down.

I'm     just    glad that all the 'rons and 'ronettes from that region of the country came through okay, and that there weren't a lot of casualties,  thank God.

We don't get hail very often in NH -- probably because it rarely gets hot enough for long enough to generate the right conditions -- so whenever I see it in video it feels so unreal to me.     The only ice we usually have falling from the sky is the kind that turns the roads into skating rinks and breaks trees    in winter.        Y'all who endure    hail   and its associated adverse weather conditions (also known as fucking TORNADOES, one of my biggest fears in the known universe)    have my    undying   respect!

I have to say that, unless you're caught out in it, hail isn't too scary until you get to the really big stuff (golf-ball and bigger) and that's actually fairly rare.  Tornadoes are bad, but we're getting much better at predicting them, detecting them, tracking them, and predicting their paths.

Really scary are the evil "microbursts."  Those things can come out of no-where, and do every bit as much damage as a tornado.

*SHUDDER*   Another   of my worst fears.   A   couple of years ago we had a few microbursts   touchdown (would that be an accurate term?)   in the Orford area.   Scary powerful.   Thankfully the damage was largely confined to trees and vegetation    and not to people's homes, but if it had happened in one of our "cities" (I alwas feel like I have to use quotes when calling a NH city a city)    it would have been a nightmare.     So    of course now every time I have to commute in stormy weather, I'm terrified my little car is going to get flipped off the road into a tree courtesy of a   microburst.

This is why I don't understand my   own     fascination with     meteorology.    The more I read about it    the    more   pants-shittingly terrifying   it becomes,   the more I want to read about it.   It's like    an    early    Stephen King novel, or the President's budget proposal.

Started hailing quarter size hail. Pain, lots of pain. Finally, in desperation, rode the motorcycle through a plowed field of mud about 50 yards to a field barn full of implements. When I finally got under cover, of course it stopped hailing. Covered in bruises, I rode the 15 miles home in the downpour. I still love bikes, hail not so much.

My brother got clonked on the head by a hail stone the size of a baseball one time....knocked him out cold. .....But then he kinda asked for it. ...He was 10 at the time, and was running outside to collect the bigger ones.....to put them in the freezer, so he could later throw them at our other brothers.

One year, in December, we got a layer of hail that accumulated on the ground....and it froze. ....Then it was freezing rain for the rest of the day. ....That night, there was the sound of trees popping and breaking under the weight of all the ice. ....Mother Nature can be a bitch sometimes.

I had an old fiberglass helmet on, or coldcocked I would have been. I used to ride motorcycles all over. I may have logged as much as 250,000 miles on a bike. My current BMW has 100K on the clock and still runs good. I once rode a Honda 750 up from the Austin area to Lubbock in winter with 2 whitetail deer strapped on the back and a rifle slung across my shoulders. It got so damn cold my hands couldn't work the levers. Got a lot of horrified looks from old ladies in Buicks though.

OT, but why not?  It's a slow day.

While celebrating his Democratic primary victory in Ward 8 Tuesday night, D.C. Councilman Marion Barry delivered a remark apparently critical of Asian business owners.

...

"We got to do something about these Asians coming in and opening up businesses and dirty shops,"     Barry said.     "They ought to go. IÂ’m going to say that right now. But we need African-American businesspeople to be able to take their places, too.”

But remember, black people can't be racist.

And actually, he said forecasting is pretty good out 5 days, not horrible at 7, but kinda shakey and progressively worse on days 8+. Of course, the takeaway was "computing power isn't the problem, better data in terms of time and space will give us better forecasts". I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a lecture he gave, I guess in the mid-90s.

Any plane at DFW Airport that had not been under cover (and some of those that were) were grounded until an inspection can be done.  They're still doing some of those today. I think.

So, yes, after sitting through that hail-storm in an airplane, they then also didn't get where they were going.

Chuck Yeager

My late dad was an AF test pilot.  He repeated that saying often.  My husband is a somewhat lazy driver.  Has no clue what a turn signal is (he may think it's an "eject" lever).  D'oh used to tell my dad that when our boy was old enough, they were going to take flying lessons together.

My dad pulled me aside one day and said, "Honey, you know I love D'oh like my own son, but do not let him take flying lessons.  The way he drives, he'll get himself and your boy killed."

D'oh never took the lessons, thankfully.

Then, needing a bath, I got in the shower. Half way through, I heard this blood curdeling scream from the kitchen, accompanied by much cursing associated with my name............anyway, I had to remove the deer.

This is the AGW feedback...planes emit carbon dioxide, which heat the atmosphere...the overheated atmosphere creates unheard of weather events like hail...in Texas...in April....hail pelts aircraft, rendering them Code 3...icky aircraft are grounded, and atmosphere returns to normal.

Please tell me there aren't people seriously calling our tornadoes the other day "unprecedented" or something stupid like that.  It's April in Texas- of course we're getting bad weather.  We'll deal with it for the next 6 weeks or so, and then we'll be able to fry eggs on the sidewalk.  And watch the roads melt.

I doubt it, Jimbo. ....Truth is, the early astronauts really  were spam in a can. ....Our astronauts weren't really given much in the way of 'flight controls' until the Shuttle came along, and by then, Yeager was too old to be considered for the program.

True.  And if you think our guys had it bad - think of those Ruskies!  They had to jump out of the capsule over land and parachute down.  Also, their flight controls were locked out for fear of defection.  I'm not sure how many deaths the Russians covered up as they built their space program but it was more than 1.

181 Yeager was a prima donna to the max. He took over every project he was assigned to. He was a great stick and rudder guy, but he had a bloated ego and made a point of screwing anybody who ever got in his way. I've read several accounts by people who worked with him. Most thought he was a dickwad.

Another incident that happened while the accident investigation was still in process, says even more about ChuckÂ’s power, and GuyÂ’s acquiescence.  Shortly after medical release to fly, Chuck tore the top off a bus, North American AviationÂ’s Ground Data Station for the XB-70 tests, which was routinely parked in a space parallel to a taxiway.  He did it with an extended-wing model of the B-57 as he was taxiing. With little ado, it was decided that there was no pilot error, only fault of the contractor for parking the bus in plain sight where it had been for months.  Even though the aircraft had very long wings, it is doubtful any other pilot would have been quietly excused.

Couple years ago I was leaving DFW International.  There was a big storm brewin', moving  West -> East as they normally do.  The pilot had made the Executive Decision to board the plane as fast as possible, get out on the tarmac as fast as possible, get in line as fast as possible, and hopefully  get gone before the squall line hit.

Didn't work.

We wound up sitting through the storm on the tarmac.  No tornadoes (because this was a couple years ago, before we had this EXTREME GLOBAL WARMING!), but driving rain and heavy wind.  Rocked the plane side to side like a beast.  Lasted about 30 mins, then another 15 for everyone to get the all-clear and us to finally get on our way.

The only pro to this story?  This was a last-minute business flight for me, and when you get the order "you've GOTTA get to X day-after-tomorrow!" then you're given a little "flexibility" with booking your flight, so I was able to get a Y-Up fare and was in 1st Class.  So the stewardess kept the beer and snacks flowing, and all-in-all it was a good time.  I was sitting next to a retired cattleman, and he was a hoot to talk to.
