8 I found an evil Easter kitteh at Cheezburger and sent it to our son.  He loved it and said he'd be afraid to fall asleep in the same house as the kitteh.

Happy Passover and Easter everyone!  I've got two extra places at my table Sunday if any of you morons are local.

Menu:

Roasted lamb, Greek style
Roasted lemon potatoes
Asparagus bundles wrapped in prosciutto
Goat cheese stuffed deviled eggs
Yeast rolls
Strawberry pretzel salad

Wine, beer, and Georgia Peach Sangria

Ya'll come!

Reading the blog is like this for me: low simmering anger at administration outrage at media more anger I laugh because I can't cry boy people are stupid, I'm losing faith in humanity I can't believe these jerks are raping my country I think I will start drinking now OMG, that is the cutest thing ever!!! (heart melts -- slight optimism). WTF! more low simmering anger at administration. repeat cycle.

33 Since the family is all coming for 1st Communion on May 5 we are alone Easter. I like that since I always do the Vigil (death by psalm) and I'm tired on easter Sunday. Blissfully that means we don't have to have easter food and we can have burgers, sweet potato fries, and cole slaw.

Oh and I did buy deviled ham today since Vic mentioned it. It has almost no carbs!

44 Okay, here's the recipe for Strawberry Pretzel Salad

(It's a salad....it's a dessert....I don't eat sweets but every LOVES it.)

2 cups coursely crushed pretzels

3/4 cup melted butter (I use unsalted)

3 T. plus 1 cup sugar, divided

1 (8 ou.) package cream cheese, softened

1 (8 ou.) container Cool Whip thawed (I know, I know)

1 (6 ou.) package strawberry gelatin

1 cup boiling water

1/2 cup miniature marshmallows (D'oh hates marshmallows....doesn't know they're in the recipe)

2 (10 ou.) packages frozen sliced strawberries, thawed

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Combine pretzels, butter and 3 T. sugar.  Mix well and press into a 9 x 13 baking dish.  Bake 8 minutes.  Cool completely.

Beat remaining 1 cup sugar and cream cheese in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer.  Blend well.  Fold in Cool Whip and spread over cooled crust.  Refrigerate until chilled.

In a separate bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water.  Add marshmallows and stir until melted.  Add strawberries with their juice.  Let stand 20 minutes.  Pour mixture over cream layer.  Refrigerate until set.  Cut into squares and serve as a salad or a dessert.  (I make it the night before.)

Enjoy!

56 Adorable!! I confess to an addiction to "Too Cute" on AP on Saturday evenings. After all of the gloom and libtard BS and threats from Iran and SMOD and other entities, it is so peaceful to watch a show that highlights the early lives of kittens and puppies. 65 Okay, here's the Creamy Goat Cheese Deviled Eggs:

6 hard-cooked eggs, halved, separated

2 oz. soft goat cheese, crumbled

6 T. mayonnaise

2 tsp. minced shallots

2 tsp. minced fresh tarragon, chives, chervil or basil (I use chives)

1/8 tsp. salt

dash pepper

1.  Place egg yolks in a medium bowl; mash with pastry blender or fork until crumbled.  Add cheese; mash until combined.  Stir in mayonnaise until smooth.  Stir in all remaining ingredients except egg whites (duh).

2.  Spoon or pipe mixture into whites.

I like to add a pretty little leaf of Italian parsley to the top of each egg.

Mama, go whenever you can, you won't regret it. I went on a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land in April a few years back; it was indeed a profound spiritual experience. But if you can't go in springtime (Israel is heartbreakingly beautiful at that time of year), go whenever, but GO! It really is a life-changer.

97 I wonder why the mail is worse now than in WWII? Makes no sense. My father in law made huge bucks in Korea selling his mother's spaghetti sauce she mailed him every week. And you can;t get stuff there. I wonder if they care less since it's not how everyone communicates anymore.

98 but GO! It really is a life-changer.

I will, if it's the very last thing I ever do.

And Happy Baseball season to you too.  Especially if you are a Cubs fan.

I had the same problem with a guitar to Afghanistan but everything else I sent he got in about 10 days....unless he was off base for something.

I sent him 3 boxes to Germany right after the holidays.  Two of them got them in about 2 weeks.  One took over 2 months.

Posted by: Tami at April 06, 2012 04:34 PM (X6akg)

100 I send our son's stuff via my UPS Store.  I can track the package on-line.  The last one I sent over three weeks ago was just being scanned in Jacksonville, FL the end of March.

I don't get it.  It seems like they'd work extra hard to get things to these kids when they're getting killed and shot at.

Oh, I forgot.  We're living in the Age of Obama.

101 Oh no wait....the guitar went to Germany too.

Actually, I never had a problem sending to Afghanistan....only to Germany.

That shouldn't be.  Definitely.

103 98, dagny - I think back in WW2 all the mail moved by US Army Air Forces. Today it often moves by foreign airlines and charter services that basically don't give a rip.

It's no stretch to say I converted while sitting looking at that statue. We go to the basilica of the shrine all the time; just about everything there makes me cry.

Son-in-law in CrapCanIstan sent a dvd of himself reading "Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?" to the kids...they got it yesterday. 18 month old Baby Girl is just totally taken with it, can't figure out how Daddy gets into the computer.

As for getting stuff TO him - um. Yeah. Like dropping packages into a hole and hoping they come out the other end. Eventually.

106 My husband mailed our kid tax info he needed (his ROTH etc.) over a month ago and he hasn't received it.

I feel like banging my head on a wall.

He's not on a FOB, he's based out of Leatherneck (Bastion) which is like a small city.

I. Don't. Get. It.

107 If it makes you feel any better, it takes like 2 weeks to mail anything to Morgantown, WV. I think they use mules or are drunk.

Pecos, God bless your friend's son.  It's a shit hole over there.  We hear first hand from our boy what they're going through.  The media no longer covers it, unless it's a rogue soldier killing locals.

I stay "sane" by coming here and laughing and through my great circle of friends.  However, being a military mom is One. Lonely. Club.  I don't know another family with a kid serving.  Moronette Tami really helped me out through our e-mails.  She's a saint.

112 As many of you know, my younger son's dream is to attend the Naval Academy. He will graduate in two years. For that reason alone, never mind the myriad others, I pray the president is not reelected. God bless our troops and all those who love them.

113 Hang in there Jane. We are praying for you and all who serve.
The waiting at home is very hard. My friend is frantic and it is hard to know what to say to her. Harder to know what not to say.  I have been her blog friend on another site for years and now we are all walking on eggs over war news topics. No one wants to make her day harde,r but to totally ignore the war news feels like ignoring her son's service. Do you have advice?

Posted by: Pecos, at April 06, 2012 05:03 PM (2Gb0y)

114 You're supposed to bite and chew and eat them!

Posted by: Anon Y. Mous at April 06, 2012 05:04 PM (k34Gz)

115 Pecos, I don't have any advice.  Every parent is different.  Before he left, I thought I would be frantic every day.  I'm not.  I get up every morning, look at his Marine grad pic on my dresser (along with pics of my late parents) and say a prayer.  And I say a prayer every night, and frequently during the day.

I'm just sick of the parents who crow to me how sad they are that Buffy won't be home for Easter because she wants to spend time at the beach with her boyfriend.

Or the dickhead we know who actually said to us, "My son is going to go into the military THE RIGHT WAY, THROUGH AN ACADEMY."

No words.  Our son isn't some poor kid, he attended private school, his dad owns a successful business, and he's grown up in a very nice community.  He's an Eagle Scout.

Gah.  I'm tired and sorry if I sound pissed.  But I am so damned tired of people who don't know telling me the "right way" to be in the military.  And I say this as the daughter of an Air Force officer.

116 Jane-hang in there, our friends son is an aviator flying cover for yours.

Posted by: Freida at April 06, 2012 05:11 PM (deXWE)

117 Jane, I was a Navy Brat and grew up on bases all over the world. Even in peace time, those who sit and wait also serve. There is no "right way" to serve. That's just stupid. I'll admit that my Father and the fathers of all my childhood friends were just regular Dads. The WWII stories they told while in their cups were old hat to us. Didn't all fathers have screaming nightmares?
Still, even with that background, I don't know how to be a good supportive friend. I have never had a child who served in war. Any advice you can give me will be taken to heart and pondered.
Question: does it raise your anxiety when Ace posts a thread on war news?

Posted by: Pecos, at April 06, 2012 05:16 PM (2Gb0y)

118 Awww, Jane thanks!!  I'm happy to do it....anytime.  It is stressful...I know.

Posted by: Tami at April 06, 2012 05:19 PM (X6akg)

119 Hey Pecos, war news doesn't raise my anxiety.  I hear it whenever our boy can e-mail us.

Just be cool, offer support, and have a sense of humor (however weird that may sound).

I've really not reached out to a single person around me.  My husband and I go about our lives as usual.  Occasionally someone will ask how our boy is, and we'll tell them.  Other than that, we don't stand out from the other parents we know.  Which is actually, kind of weird.

Our media has lost interest in Afghanistan.  And thus, the American populace.

121 Jane, LOL!  I didn't get much down him.  He's still coughing but it's better.
