(It's a salad....it's a dessert....I don't eat sweets but every LOVES it.)
2 cups coursely crushed pretzels
3/4 cup melted butter (I use unsalted)
3 T. plus 1 cup sugar, divided
1 (8 ou.) package cream cheese, softened
1 (8 ou.) container Cool Whip thawed (I know, I know)
1 (6 ou.) package strawberry gelatin
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup miniature marshmallows (D'oh hates marshmallows....doesn't know they're in the recipe)
2 (10 ou.) packages frozen sliced strawberries, thawed
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Combine pretzels, butter and 3 T. sugar. Mix well and press into a 9 x 13 baking dish. Bake 8 minutes. Cool completely.
Beat remaining 1 cup sugar and cream cheese in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer. Blend well. Fold in Cool Whip and spread over cooled crust. Refrigerate until chilled.
In a separate bowl, dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Add marshmallows and stir until melted. Add strawberries with their juice. Let stand 20 minutes. Pour mixture over cream layer. Refrigerate until set. Cut into squares and serve as a salad or a dessert. (I make it the night before.)
Enjoy!

When I was a little lobster, our lab would very earnestly go through a plate of salad, pick out all the fresh pieces, set them aside in a pile next to the plate, and then eat the staler stuff. It was hilarious to watch.

6 hard-cooked eggs, halved, separated
2 oz. soft goat cheese, crumbled
6 T. mayonnaise
2 tsp. minced shallots
2 tsp. minced fresh tarragon, chives, chervil or basil (I use chives)
1/8 tsp. salt
dash pepper
1. Place egg yolks in a medium bowl; mash with pastry blender or fork until crumbled. Add cheese; mash until combined. Stir in mayonnaise until smooth. Stir in all remaining ingredients except egg whites (duh).
2. Spoon or pipe mixture into whites.
I like to add a pretty little leaf of Italian parsley to the top of each egg.

Mama, go whenever you can, you won't regret it. I went on a Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land in April a few years back; it was indeed a profound spiritual experience. But if you can't go in springtime (Israel is heartbreakingly beautiful at that time of year), go whenever, but GO! It really is a life-changer.
Blessed Passover to all the Jewish morons, Blessed Easter to all the Christians, and happy opening of baseball season to everyone else (except fans of the Evil Empire [just kidding]).

I had the same problem with a guitar to Afghanistan but everything else I sent he got in about 10 days....unless he was off base for something.

Pecos, God bless your friend's son. It's a shit hole over there. We hear first hand from our boy what they're going through. The media no longer covers it, unless it's a rogue soldier killing locals.
I stay "sane" by coming here and laughing and through my great circle of friends. However, being a military mom is One. Lonely. Club. I don't know another family with a kid serving. Moronette Tami really helped me out through our e-mails. She's a saint.

The waiting at home is very hard. My friend is frantic and it is hard to know what to say to her. Harder to know what not to say. I have been her blog friend on another site for years and now we are all walking on eggs over war news topics. No one wants to make her day harde,r but to totally ignore the war news feels like ignoring her son's service. Do you have advice?
Posted by: Pecos, at April 06, 2012 05:03 PM (2Gb0y)
I'm just sick of the parents who crow to me how sad they are that Buffy won't be home for Easter because she wants to spend time at the beach with her boyfriend.
Or the dickhead we know who actually said to us, "My son is going to go into the military THE RIGHT WAY, THROUGH AN ACADEMY."
No words. Our son isn't some poor kid, he attended private school, his dad owns a successful business, and he's grown up in a very nice community. He's an Eagle Scout.
Gah. I'm tired and sorry if I sound pissed. But I am so damned tired of people who don't know telling me the "right way" to be in the military. And I say this as the daughter of an Air Force officer.

Question: does it raise your anxiety when Ace posts a thread on war news?
Posted by: Pecos, at April 06, 2012 05:16 PM (2Gb0y)
Posted by: Tami at April 06, 2012 05:19 PM (X6akg)
Just be cool, offer support, and have a sense of humor (however weird that may sound).
I've really not reached out to a single person around me. My husband and I go about our lives as usual. Occasionally someone will ask how our boy is, and we'll tell them. Other than that, we don't stand out from the other parents we know. Which is actually, kind of weird.
Our media has lost interest in Afghanistan. And thus, the American populace.
