Harry S. Goddanged Truman, Union Buster
— Dave in Texas

On August 25, 1950 President Truman ordered the US Army to take control of the nation's railroads, in anticipation of a crippling railway strike. Two months after North Korea sent seven infantry divisions, 150 medium tanks, 200 aircraft, an armored brigade, a separate infantry regiment, a motorcycle regiment and another batch (brigade) of crazy Border Constables across the 38th parallel into South Korea and launched the Korean War.

Given the stakes, an entire Army mobilizing to move into the fight, Harry was in no mood to eff around.

110907-truman-vmed-10a.grid-4x2.jpg

FYNQ

In a public statement that day, Truman insisted that "governmental seizure [of the railroads] is imperative" for the protection of American citizens as well as "essential to the national defense and security of the Nation." He used the same justification for seizing control of steel plants when the United Steel Workers union struck later in the year.

The three unions involved in the strike that came to pass, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, the Order of Railway Conductors and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen eventually threw themselves into the war effort after 21 months of telling the nation to "please consider our important needs" while American troops fought and died in the field.

This is how it was, in 1950. They haven't changed their stripes at all. Sometimes we need a reminder that this recent unpleasantness between the country and unions didn't just spring up yesterday.

Harry Truman is not exactly a beloved former President by us conservatives, and I'm not giving him a pass on carrying FDR's domestic policies. But there was a time when Democrats were willing to take on the unions for the good of the country, and that's worth noting.

Also, thanks for smacking PATCO Ronnie. "We're on strike," "That's illegal, and you're all fired."

He knew the score.

2 In the event of a loss we need to cut a deal with the unions that rely on economic growth and sell the union bosses on the idea of wider membership in mining, transportation, and industrial trade unions in a globally competitive market being the best aid to their and their workers' interests.  I am not in love with this as a free market person but the PEUs and Private sector unions need divorced.  The unions are a big part of the sluggish nature of our recovery as are the enviros their being in bed together is insane.

6 4 Toby 928th,

The Democrat voter used to understand the insanity of being as suicidally lockstep as they now are.  Good news in Indianapolis, went to the state fairgrounds this morning to look at Ammo at the gun show there, not a single Obama sign in the "ethnic" part of town.  The economy being this bad it depressing his 2008 coalitions' enthusiasm immensely.

7 Posted by: sven10077 at August 26, 2012 02:36 PM (LRFds) If we lose, we need to mimic the unions and go on strike to cut off tax revenue for the Federal Empire.

The difference in 1950 was that most of the country had a strong work ethic.

;;;;; '''''

That work ethic has been destroyed in some and inhibited in too many others, including myself. I went partially Galt as soon as I knew Obama would win.

;;;;;;; ''''''''

Obama has had a profound psychological effect on the country. We won't be putting our shoulders to the economic wheel until he is gone, either in November or in another 4 years.

;;;;;; '''''''''

Years of difficult times are ahead no matter how the election shakes out. The only question left is when the real recovery (recovery of a sense of purpose, recovery of belief in the American way of life) begins. The necessary tools are at our disposal.

''''''' ..;.;;.;

Awaken, America. There is so much to be done.

"As for voting, I am not going to cast a vote for president in this election as I do not think either man is qualified or deserves being handed that responsibility. However, I am going to continue my one-man political protest by voting AGAINST ALL INCUMBENTS, regardless of party. Call it my way of imposing voter controlled term limits."

The unions were getting more and more militant in the run-up to Reagan's action, demanding more and more to offset the accelerating inflation of the Carter era.

Reagan's action in deballing PATCO set the union movement back by 30 years, easily, because everyone saw Reagan not only did not pay a political price, but to the contrary, saw his popularity shoot through the roof. Any politician needing a boost could pick a fight with a union, and the unions, realizing this, kept their heads down.

President Romney needs to PATCO at least one public sector (or quasi-public sector) union (Mitt: please, please make it SEIU).

42 O/T, it looks like Akin isn't the only Motherfuckabee associate who believes in Magical Vajayjay Goalie quackery: _________________________________________ But Huckabee's been at this rodeo -- do pilgrims rodeo? -- at this clam bake for quite some time. In 1998, Arkansas State Senator Fay Boozman helped wreck his chances at a U.S. Senate seat by suggesting that rape-activated female hormones could prevent pregnancy -- "god's little shield." Boozman lost by 12 points. Then he lucked out. Gov. Mike Huckabee, a friend and political ally for many years, put Boozman in charge of the Arkansas Department of Health. The "god's little shield" controversy was fresh, and Huckabee kept getting asked about it. As far as he was concerned, the story was over, and it was unfair to harp on it. "If nothing else," said Huckabee, according to a February 1999 story in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, "I hope to make it very clear that our administration is not governed by intimidation. We're not going to allow the shrill voices of a few to so disparage the character of a very decent and good person to an outstanding position in such a way that Arkansas would lose his service at the Department of Health." _________________________________________ source: http://tinyurl.com/cvpcy3l

Another big source of funds, and an increasing one, are the philanthropic foundations.  Once you lose control of their boards they steer the money where they please.   The benefactors of these foundations would likely roll in their graves if they new of the ideology supported by them.

To understand history...you have to look at *all* of the ingredients that were present at the time.

For example...when the Draft was in place, being 'pro-military' was a more across-the-board thing.

Back then, it affected...everyone.

Everyone had a brother, a cousin, a son....someone in their family....who had served, or was serving.

The military....was 'us'.

So, there was a different attitude, in general, back then....towards our military.

Our military is still...'us'....but the fact that it is voluntary now, allows some to view it more as 'them', instead.

Here's a bit of history union workers are proud of:

During the forty-four months from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day, there were 14,471 strikes involving 6,774,000 strikers: more than during any period of comparable length in United States history. In 1944 alone, 369,000 steel and iron workers, 389,000 auto workers, 363,000 other transportation equipment workers, and 278,000 miners were involved in strikes. In many cases, the "quickie" tactics were extremely effective in improving working conditions and easing the burden of company discipline. Workers virtually made extra holidays for themselves around Christmas and New Year's, holding illicit plant parties and cutting production to a trickle. Workers often created free time for themselves on the job by other means. On one occasion, workers in an aircraft plant staged a necktie-cutting party in the middle of working hours, roaming through the plant snipping off ties of fellow workers, supervisors, and managers. The wildcat tradition and organization gave workers a direct counter-power over such management decisions as the speed of work, number of workers per task, assignment of foremen, and organization of work While the effects are impossible to measure, industry representatives claimed a decrease of "labor efficiency" of 20 to 50 percent during the war period.

The longshoremen struck in against the war effort in 1942 until Hitler invaded Communist Russia.

Unions have always been a bunch of anti-American Communist cocksuckers.

After Katrina in 2005, there was quite a bit of work by the Army Corp of Engineers to fix the levees, etc in New Orleans.  And none of that crank political interference.  They put in the surge gates in the canals that the Enviros hated, to prevent Lake Ponchartrain from overflowing (which is what broke the levees in 2005) from a tidal storm surge.

My sister is in Naples and told me this morning they expect wind and rain this afternoon (well, about now actually). It's just a Cat 1 now, and they don't get worried until it gets to a Cat 3 or better.

126 There's an interesting typo in the headline: "Harry S. Goddanged Truman, Union Buster" That's actually wrong. It should be, amazingly, "Harry S Goddanged Truman, Union Buster" Notice the difference? There's no period after the "S". That's because Harry S Truman was absolutely unique in having a single letter as his middle name. Almost every other "middle initial" in everyone else's name has a period after it because it is an abbreviation. But in Harry's case, the "S" did not stand for anything, so it was NOT an abbreviation. And since the only reason to have a period after middle initials is to indicate that they are abbreviations that stand for something, therefore in Harry's case there was no period. His middle name was, simply, S -- and nothing else. It is very often misspelled as "S." with a period, but technically that is wrong. Interestingly, Truman apparently early in his life signed his name with no period, but was told he should include a period to "regularize" his name, so many signatures include the period -- but after a while he just got sick of the issue and resorted to just signing "Harry Truman" with no initial at all. The Irregularity-phobes have since tried to enforce a period in the official versions of his name, but they are just being revisionists.

127 Truman got slapped down by the courts in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer and had to back off. He and the Congress essentially wanted to nationalize steel and railroads for the duration of the emergency. (I wonder how long the "emergency" would have lasted under the Democrats?) Woodrow Wilson also nationalized the railroads during WWI, so Democrats have a long history of trying to take over essential private industries. No wonder they idealize Castro, Hugo Chavez and Hu Jintao.

135 Dave in Texas, agreed that once upon a time when boomers were babies and school kids, the Democrat Party elected the likes of Truman (despite Dewey Wins!) and JFK, neither of whom illustrate the current lot of Marxists in power. But then, at the same time prior to Eisenhower, Republicans were SMALL GOVERNMENT, low budgets and low tax libertarians compared to the neoconservative Keynesian big spenders in power now.

Check it out: 1950 Labor union associations ousted membership constituencies for being Communist, and for being corrupt.

http://tinyurl.com/bn9eol3

"1952 President Truman seizes the steel industry when the steel companies reject the Wage Stabilization Board recommendations. Supreme Court rules the action unconstitutional."

Already 111 comments, too many to sift through to find what the Rail Road workers demands were that the industry refused to meet. I'll speculate, considering that during the 1940s given WWII subsequent to the Great 30's Depression, wages and required work hours (beyond the 40 hr. week) and whatever benefit compensations most likely had been frozen for nearly 20 years already in 1950, and then never kept up with the inflation post-1945.  So by 1950, while other industries saw rising wages matching the rising cost of housing, etc., what were the steel and rail road employees to do given that their CEOs  saw to their own management bonuses and raises in salaries?

Also, the Korean War was a UN War. What Truman did was to benefit the UN War, run by the UN, not by the US Military. The real threat to our national security was the propaganda /that dominoes would crush America, in theory at least/; not to mention the national threat to our sovereignty as the falling chips have exposed the UN aspirations to now be.

Hm. Whether it was "scary" depends on whether you recall what the US Military did to the US Military Veterans of WWI, the "bonus army" camped in D.C. and along the Potomac. Or whether your family was blue collar, miners for instance, when the police, sheriff, State/National Guard were called out, by the corporate CEO or by the respective governmental body's chief executive, to break-up strikes, whether beating up the picket line, or shooting into the crowd of strikers, killing women and children as well as the men.

Usually a pretty long statute of limitations on rapes though.  You could claim custody, but its probably not worth going to prison over...cuz you kinda have to confess to the crime to make the claim.

182 Well, I got one leak fixed.  Another is due to water penetration in a gable end because of some cracks in the stucco.

The east wind is driving the water through the cracks and down the inner attic gable wall.  I don't think I can do anything about that until the rain stops... unless its a crude hack like tacking a tarp on the outside to block the wind.

Amazingly, 75% of North Korean defectors living in the ROK, still believe the north's communist system is the best government system...it was just midlevel bureaucrats who kept fucking things up.

Think about this for a minute. These are the people who lived in an absolute shithole, starved their entire lives (while watching 10% or more of their neighbors actually starve to death), who literally risked their life (and basically forfeited the lives of their family members) in order to defect to the south.  Yet 75% still believe they were living in the perfect society.

Call it what you want, but liberalism/communism/statism/progressivism is truly a mental disorder.
