— Ace Okay, that's funny, but let me argue against Allah's and Krauthammer's suggestion he's working an angle.
All politicians bullshit. Right? It's a skill they have.
Nevertheless, whether they're skilled at bullshit or not, it's more difficult -- it takes more energy -- to lie than it does to tell the truth.
Bill Clinton is now an ex-politician. He doesn't have to bullshit -- or lie -- any longer.
He can lie. He could bullshit. But the question I'd ask is: Why would he bother?
For one thing, he did a lot of lying in the past. He's used up his quota.
For another thing: Why should he go out of his way for Obama? What has Obama done for him?
Bill Clinton is in a very small club of people-- Presidents of the United States of America. That's a big f'n' deal, as Joe Biden would say.
Whenever someone goes all-in in supporting a politician, he is inherently, unavoidably sort of putting himself beneath that politician.
It's unavoidable, really. Every day we talk about Mitt Romney, for example, and urge his victory, we're sort of saying "Mitt Romney is more important than we are, in the grand scheme of things, than we are."
Now, that's actually true. Not fun to confess, but it's true: The number of people who will have a greater impact on history, for good or for ill, than Mitt Romney (or Barack Obama, should he win) will be very small indeed.
But while that's true of almost everyone in America, and the world, as a matter of fact, there is one person that's not true of: Bill Clinton.
Bill Clinton almost certainly favors Barack Obama to win again in 2012. That said, his ego would probably not permit himself to act as a simple flunkie or flack for Obama.
That's the kind of crap that Paul Begala does -- endless water-carrying for whatever idiot the Democrats have nominated this time 'round.
But Bill Clinton? Bill Clinton can tell himself, with some justification, that he doesn't need to lower himself to Paul Begala's level (or, for that matter, my level).
To many Democrats, Barack Obama is a hero and the most important transformational figure since... Bill Clinton.
To Bill Clinton, he's an idiot who f***ed everything up.
Like I'm said, I'm sure Bill Clinton would prefer if Barack Obama were reelected.
I also don't think he's going to work very hard to make that happen.
As Zaphod Beeblebrox's psychiatrist said of him: "He's just this guy, you know?"
Now, having said that: I'm actually not altogether sure Bill Clinton really thinks Obama is a good president, or should be trusted for four more years of maladministration.
It's definitely expected that he claim he believes this, and he's willing to conform himself to expected social obligations.
But I can understand him having less than full enthusiasm for the project. Obama is a disaster, and surely he knows this.
You can ask a friend to tell your wife you were out bowling, instead of doing what you were really doing, like making it rain at a strip club.
And he probably will cover for you.
But you can't expect him to lie with the same gusto as you might.
Barack Obama should stop expecting Bill Clinton to swear upon a pack of Bibles they were out bowling. Bill Clinton doesn't have to lie about making it rain anymore.
Oh, Here's a Better Analogy: Every have a very old relation who says racist things and embarrasses the family?
And then people say two things: "He's very set in his ways" and "He just doesn't care anymore."
I don't, but Adam Carolla was talking about that last month.
So: Bill Clinton's retired. He earned his federal pension. It's Golf City for him now.
He'll show up at family gatherings if you insist on it, but don't get him started on his Dominican Maid Who Steals His Pills.
He may say embarrassing things, but he's very set in his ways, and he just doesn't care anymore.

1) Clinton thinks that the economy isn't going to get much better in the next 4 years (especially once the Euro blows up)
2) After 8 years of Obama, who's going to vote for a Dem for President?
3) Who benefits in 2016, if a Republican wins, but the economy still stalls?

Maybe he is counting time, figuring that another term of Obama would be disastrous and likely push a Republican in for at least 8 years. While if Obama loses, and Europe crashes like we all think it will, and burns the dollar with it, then Romney could also very possibly be a one termer, putting just 4 years instead of 12 between now and a possibility to get Hillary in the White House.

OTOH, if Obama is reelected, its a virtual guarantee that the economy would be in ashes by 2016 and that any Dem would be radioactive. Soooo...
Maybe Hillary is better off with a Romney victory. Bill is shorting the economy no matter what; its just a question of who gets blamed, Dem or GOP.

And Barack Obama is a stuttering clusterf*ck of a miserable tyrant. That means that, if he somehow manages to win in November, he doesn't just destroy the party for 8 years, or even 12. He might just destroy the nation, and he'd almost certainly destroy the Democrat party for a generation.

1) Hillary's electoral chances are a complete non-factor. She's DONE, it's OVER, forget about her. She'll be 69 in 2016 and she's let herself go in the looks department. And truthfully, the American electorate is a helluva lot more sexist than it ever was "racist."
2) Bill may be an ex-president, but he's never gotten over the 22nd Amendment. He knows he would've crushed Bush in 2000 if he would've been able to run again. Clinton also hated Bush at the time because Bush hated Clinton for beating his dad. It wasn't until around 2004 that Clinton started cozying up to the Bush family (in preparation for a smooth transition from Dubya -> Hillary in 200
3) Bill may be an ex-president, but he lives for politics in general and the Democratic Party in particular. Unlike the Bushes, who did their time and became private citizens, Bill's love of politics, and his failure to create a meaningful legacy, keeps him restlessly involved in aiding the Democratic Party. Obama is a major problem for the Party.
4) Ironically, with Clinton having no legacy in terms of policies, his greatest legacy is being the only two term Donk since FDR. If Obama wins, Bill loses his luster.

He is in a position to say whatever he chooses and, in the end, no matter what he says.. no matter how damaging.. the other team will still see it as Clinton supporting Obama simply because he claims he is supporting Obama.
As long as he SAYS he's supporting Obama, nothing else is relevant.

I think you give FDR too much credit. I think he wanted an enlightened progressive country in which all people were cared for by the government, and all decisions were made by a council of learned elders such as himself. A squishy, gauzy view of the world such as FDR's made it easy to hope for some brave new world.
I use as evidence the fact that Stalin ate his lunch at every opportunity, and Churchill did not have a tremendously high opinion of FDR's intellect.
However, this doesn't mean that I don't hate him as much as you do. In fact, since I am a Jew, I probably hate him more.

There are factions in the Dem party. Obama belongs to one faction, the radical leftists. Clinton belongs to another faction, the technocratic liberals. Other factions are Racist Minorities (in Obama's camp), Feminazis (Clinton's Camp), Kennedys (their own camp), Bureaucrats (split between camps), elderly Jewish Liberals (Clinton), Gay Activists (Hillary) and many others.
Clinton was very deft at palliating and recruiting members of all the different factions. Obama is not. He's pissed off the technocrats, the Kennedys, the anti-war pacifists, the far left radicals (ironically, since that was his original base of support within the party).
All Obama really has left are the Feminists, the racists, and the gay activists. That's why he had to make a seriously noncommittal statement about Gay marriage. no-one else was going to fund his campaign. But he had to do it in a way that wouldn't alienate his Black supporters.
It's obvious to an experienced operator like Clinton that Obama is losing this one. So what to do? Settle old scores, resume control of the party apparatus, and especially, set up for the next election. All of these are accomplished by undercutting Obama.
People who dismiss Hillary 2016 as his motivation forget that a financial boom under Romney will come as a surprise to liberals. They expect the extended recession to go on for years and years, especially if Romney has the cojones to actually cut spending. They really believe that cutting spending will extend the misery.

This sounds pretty sensible, really. Think about it - Clinton was a success by compromising, and getting results - despite his numerous scandals. Obama is just a nobody dick who has gotten by on zero accomplishments by playing the race card. There is a major schism between the inner party of Dem as Obama operating as a political ingenue operating free of convention and full of progressive agitation under the constant advisement of one, Valerie Jarrett (who herself quite hasn't even hit the rung of ingenue in terms of political intelligence and that of standard fare intelligence).
In short, Bill Clinton is an uber political operator who thrives on a constant state of control as a self-appointed "thought-leader" who is the titular head of the party of Dem, operating with high status and charge demanding those in the party, inclusive of Obama, be obsequious when he himself, the big titular,is in the house, for Clinton is, if anything, one who demands respect for his operation of Dem.
The take-away from Bill Clinton's dissonance (to the expected harmonics in promo of Team Obama) is the fact 1) Clinton does not want to fully deconstruct the United States and is genuiely frightened of Obama's nature and 2) Bill Clinton ain't into inurement.

Even if she was a viable candidate, her hapless stumbling as Secretary of State has shown this woman climbed to the Senate on her husband's lap and was in over her head almost immediately in the white house.

Anyone who lends ANY legitimacy to the rantings of Clinton is doing much more harm than good. Screw Clinton. If dems want to listen to him, then fine for them. I don't care what he thinks about anything, whether he happens to luck onto a reasonable position once in a blue moon or not.

It's not a Democrat trend, it's a failure trend. Nixon spent 20 years after his presidency undermining the current Oval Office occupants, whereas Lyndon Johnson drank himself into a stupor on his Texas ranch.
Eisenhower wouldn't let Truman come within 500 miles of DC during his term, but Ike was called in by LBJ to run generals' meetings during 'Nam. Same thing with Hoover - FDR exiled him, but Truman brought him in to take care of the food thing.

I did forget one caveat; that is if someone has an original idea that is objectively true or a new and good way of viewing a situation. In that case I am happy to use it - truth and intelligent arguments are independent of the messenger - but in that case I would have to say that respect the person's thinking in that context, as my use of his argument says on its own. Luckily with Clinton (as I've said above) this is never an issue since he has no original ideas and nothing important to impart.

Why the eff would I want a garden book written by Michelle Obama? what does that woman know about gardening? Zero. Less than zero.
I swear I know Obama is destroying this country and that's why it is ABO this fall, but really when it comes down to it, I want to get her off the airwaves even more than him. but will they ever truly go away? Or will they become judges on America's Got Talent, and cooking shows, and do round after round of the talk show circuit, and then make surprise appearances in Hollywood movies, appear in music videos, headline Vegas acts. I mean, really even when we vote him out of office they are never, ever going to go away are they?
Now I'm depressed.

As a practical matter, Romney stands a very good chance of being a 1-term president.
Even if he does everything necessary, with 100% perfect execution, and is blessed with a willing congress to try and right this sinking ship, 4 years simply isn't enough time to undo all the systemic damage that's been done over the past 70 years.
We may be entering an extended period of political instability and 1-term presidents as long as our deep problems exist. When the public finally smartens up that its actually congress that's done the most long term damage, then maybe stability will prevail.

Hopefully they'll be relegated to the OWN which will have the same nuanced effect as deep woods bear poop.

"201There is a major schism between the inner party of Dem ..."
You know, you might have something there. More than a few times lately, I hear lifelong, loyal Democrats who don't say it explicitly, but are waking up to the fact that Obama is nothing like what he was sold to be, but is rather an anti-capitalist radical nut-job, hell-bent on destroying America.
Upon this realization, many of them are actually turning against him. It reminds me of the mod guys in the movie "The Rocketeer", when they learn that they're dealing with Nazis. They turned on their ally in a heartbeat, declaring their loyalty to America.
A guy like Romney ought to be able to pick up those votes, and this can only grow between now and November.

You are the abomination and everything else you have accused me of...you are guilty of....and it's sad very very sad...
I've criticized rubio because I don't like some of the things he's said and he's too young....I'd rather see rudy guilliani in there than a wet behind the ears rubio or paul ryan....west should be vp he's had the experience. But people like you, my grand dad used to call them "people with blinders" only think in terms they can understand....you understand concepts like racism way too well...

Now, he sees Obama killing the nation with lefty positions (albeit extreme). Once again, I think Clinton sees the Dem's legacy, and thus his, being destroyed. He needs Barry out of office so that the blame is shifted to the Republicans.

He's a Democrat hero and an enemy to us.
I don't care what he says about Obama. At most, it's an internal feud.

What do you suppose it's worth to him to be the Only Living 2-Term Democratic President? As well as The First Dem Pres Re-Elected Since Kennedy?
Further: If he does want Hillary to have a shot at the Top Spot, it's a LOT easier for a Democrat to win election against an opposing-party incumbent rather than as the follow-on to another Democrat. In fact, there hasn't been a Democrat elected Pres following 2 FULL terms of another Dem since... Martin Van Buren!
History is clear on this; Dems don't get to follow Dems as President unless the first one dies in office. Seems people simply can't generally stomach their policies for more than 8 years.
So, considering that Clinton 1) thinks Obama is a fool and is doing bad things to the country, and 2) Hillary's only shot at President now would be on the heels of one term of a Republican... isn't it just possible that Billy would find things to like in Obama being run out as a one-term-mistake, tolerating 4 years of Romney (while attacking him daily), in order to set Hillary up with a shot as the First Husband-Wife Presidential Team, the First Female President, and Billy's Triumphant Return To The White House as First-ever First Husband?
I personally think it would suit him just fine. Place in history, assured. No one else can ever be first. And Billy has always longed to be 'first'.
