— Ace Bit of an update to the earlier post -- Obama might be cutting losses in Colorado and Virginia as well.
One thing I wanted to note was Romney's strengthening position in Ohio. I didn't want to get my hopes up when I read this, from Mark Halperin, via Hot Air:
HereÂ’s why some Democrats are worried tonight. If Romney wins the three Southern battlegrounds (FL, NC, and VA) and OH, he is at 266 electoral votes. Leaving the other five battlegrounds unallocated, that means Obama would be at 237 and Romney would only need to win one of the remaining five states to get to 270+Â…
One senior Democratic official expressed real concern tonight unlike I have heard before about Ohio potentially slipping away from Obama (the state has been trending Republican in statewide races, Rob Portman has become a force, religious and gun groups are flooding the state with voter contacts, two of RomneyÂ’s top strategists have recently won a statewide race there, etc).
Okay. That's just one report, so I didn't want to go kookoobananas on it. Ohio worries me.
But now Peter Hamby reports (first link, above):
The buzz from Columbus: Ohio race was reset by Romney's first debate (and he may have even been up heading into debate #2)
Buzz? It does seem likely that Democrats are providing this buzz; and it's possible we still only have the one source, the one senior Democrat, leaking to both men. And this may be based on a single Obama internal poll.
Still.
So: I'm still worried about Ohio, and I have long thought it simply is a Democratic state now, and still want Romney to make a strong play for Wisconsin and Michigan -- I don't want so many eggs in this Ohio basket -- but it does seem like maybe Ohio is trending in our favor.

Romney needs to fight for Wisconsin, Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire and Maine (all of it, not just D2), in addition to Ohio.

Remember, 2010 turnout was R+1. 2004 turnout was R+5. Obama didn't win it by much in 2008 and only got it by running up the absentee vote totals.
Polls don't take GOTV into account. I think we will win OH and WI though.

Get out the vote. Romney will need down ticket support. He needs Republican Senators and Congressman. Republican statehouses and Governors are valuable too. And they are easier on our pocketbooks.

Does California still have 55 electoral votes?
It had 55 in 2008....but tons of people have left CA since then.
CAC's map yesterday showed it having 55...now.
How can that be?
I think there may be some 'ghost electoral votes' in these deeply blue states...where people have been leaving in droves.

Anybody worried about Romney's path to 270 should be heartened by thinking about how an obama supporter feels about his path to 270.

See, I've never heard of Dave Edmunds before. It's crazy because I was, by proxy, a huge ELO fan growing up (youngets of 4, inherited by older brothers' tastes). I recognized Jeff Lynn's production all over it, That song is so similar to Don't Bring Me Down it's ridiculous.
How is it possible that I'm an Audio Director, write music for a living, have avidly followed ELO, keep abreast of all the trends and constantly seek new music out and yet.....I've never, ever heard of Dave Edmunds before.
It's just not possible.

What I'm saying is that it appears Crowley coordinated with the Obama people on the Benghazi question before the debate and they alerted her to their intent to use the 9/12 Rose Garden statement. If they didn't give it to her, why would she happen to have it? Obama seems to know she has an actual copy of the statement on her.

Of course she should. OTOH, the only thing she had going for her was her the fact that she was sort of smart and had a reputation for doing her homework, which is an acknowledged rarity at CNN. She is far from even average in the looks department, is tall and heavy--those are not things that make it easy on a woman in media. But, now, she has NADA, ZIP, ZILCH, ZERO, she blew it all on a guy who probably despises her in his heart of hearts. She did a Helen Thomas on herself, all by herself.

I know this isn't the right thread, but during the debate last night Romney said "government doesn't create jobs". Then, when asked about difficulties for women in the marketplace, he mentioned how he hired a bunch of women while he was governor. That's like affirmative action and nanny state in one statement, as far as I'm concerned.
Frankly, I was hoping for Santorum, even though I knew his chances were slim. But this is why I couldn't go for Romney then, and I am stuck voting for him now, despite this pretty glaring contradiction. I'm surprised the MSM isn't all over this one. Or maybe it is, and I just haven't seen it yet.
Thoughts?

Remember that story about how the media was dropping like 19 states from exit polling, but only 3-4 were Democrat states?
At the time we all thought that was typical media bias and weighting the exit polls by stocking up on safe Dem states.
Maybe the real reason is that apart from DC, Maryland, Mass and whatever the other state was....none of the Dem states are safe enough to call yet???

It's not Romney, but Obama that MUST win Ohio to have a chance. Romney can get to a win in the above scenario without Ohio (248 electoral votes), plus Colorado (9), Iowa (6), Nevada (6) = 269 (269 means President Romney, where tie is broken by House). At this point I think Colorado and New Hampshire (4) are likely Romney. Wisconsin (10) is also clearly up for grabs. The fact is there is no plausible path to victory for Obama that does not include Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

ACE,
Ohio has voted predominantly Republican for the last couple decades, except for a scandal-ridden period (sitting governor convicted of ethics charges) from 2006/2008, which is when Sherrod Brown sneaked in.
In the most recent statewide elections in 2010, Ohio elected Kasich as governor; Portman overwhelmingly as Senator; and the entire slate of statewide candidates (replacing all the dems who took office in '06). Ohio leans right.
An additional nugget to chew on. Kasich came real close to winning in several metropolitan counties that are traditionally considered democrat strongholds, due mostly to pitifully poor democrat turnout in those areas. And Obama was here more than a dozen times trying to drag former Gov. Strickland across the line for reelection. I don't see any more excitement here on the democratic side than in 2010. And the reported numbers on democrat registration back that up.
I think Romney will win comfortably (by 4-6 points) in Ohio.

I dislike the snobbery of the "intellectual elite" who think they are the only people who know anything.
My father never got but one semester of college because of the Depression, and in order to help his family, he enlisted in the Army in 1937 (stockade Ft. Snelling with horses and pay in silver dollars) and ended up staying in until after WWII. He came home and did furnace repair and sheet metal work. My mother, who was a teacher, stayed home with all 5 of us until I was in 5th grade, and dad got a job as head of maintenance in the local school system.
Every time I hear that sneer of Obama's, I think of some of the younger teachers who treated by dad shabbily because he was the maintenance guy.
Two Bronze Stars from Italian theater (one because he learned Italian and organized the street people of Naples to repair equipment) a man who could write humorous sonnets and figure algebra in his head, to them was anobody because he wore coveralls.
And that is what I hear from Obama, who I hope ends up eating from a trash can.

Thoughts?
Posted by: Right Turn Allowed at October 17, 2012 06:20 PM (IOWVc)
"Glaring contradiction"? The government doesn't directly create jobs but it indirectly does by establishing an economic environment that is conducive for companies to hire people. The government also has to hire people to run the government. I certainly hope that this isn't news to you. I don't know how you expected Romney to answer that type of question, especially if you didn't want him to ostracize a large part of the electorate. That question and many of the others last night are more of an indictment against these idiotic town hall debates than they are an indictment against Romney.

I mean, I know this state is one of the most retarded liberal strongholds in the nation, and that the networks are at the head of the line shilling for Osama Obama, but even a brain-dead Masshole has to see the truth once in a while. Well, maybe that's just me having more faith in the 1% of the 47% as humans than I should.
Last night was an obvious set-up from start to finish. That's why the fight has to intensify, not be relaxed for premature celebration. I am so sick of the Traitor-in-Chief that I want to see a 47-state blowout for Romney at a minimum. Don't worry about Ohio - I went to the Romney/Christie event last week in Cuy Falls - 12,000 people in line for 3 hours for an outdoor venue - I have never seen so many - young, old, families - energized beyond control. It was like a rock concert. Romney will win Ohio going away. What people fail to realize is that most Ohioians resent what has happened in their major cities - Cleveland, Cinci etc and blame lib democrats for it, especially Obama.

All I'm saying is that he probably shouldn't have used a personal anecdote that he created jobs when he was in government, in his cabinet, based on gender. It doesn't hold up well to critique is all. He should have just said what you said - "a better economy, which is inevitable if you elect me, will benefit both women and men". I agree with your point - I just disagree with how he answered. But again, I never really trusted his motives as a true conservative, at least not in the same vein as Santorum or Gingrich.

There was no good response to that question for Romney, and I say that as someone who has never been a big fan of Romney either (my first choices in 2008 was Fred Thompson and 2012 was Rick Perry). Romney is a marginal conservative but he has a record of success in the private and public sectors that dwarf those of the current Oval Office occupant.
I'll be honest with you. What point does it make for you to be attacking Romney with comments that were better uttered during the GOP primaries? I don't understand what you hope to gain three weeks before the election. Help get Romney elected then hold his feet to the fire. This approach can work on at least some of the important issues, as it did with George W. Bush (e.g., Harriet Miers SCOTUS nomination that ended up being a much better Samuel Alito instead).

2. He asked the questions (I am paraphrasing), "Do you mean to tell me that there are no women equally as well qualified for these jobs? If there are some, get me their resumes so I can consider them as well."
3. Then he split the hiring after being certain that he had all the good candidates, not just the ones without ladyparts.
The women in his administration put together a video about it. There is nothing unConservative about refusing to be steered to hire only guys.

Nah, that's not fair. Being overly concerned is just fear of failure, an unfortunate but common presonality trait. Almost all of us exhibit some level of concern over important events. So, maybe a "Give The Concerned A Binky" thread would be a nice way to work on the problem.

Of course we have to seperate the Romney supporting concerned peeps from the Obama supporting fake concern trolls first. Then the beatings and binky distributions can begin.

Love me some welders. Proud to share this forum with you and every other blue collar person who is here.
My late Dad was a welder out of Local 597 in Chicago. He was the best of the best as far as welders went. At his funeral, more than one man stood up and told a story about my Dad's skills. BTW, he had an automatic deferment in WWII. He kept going down to enlist and they kept refusing him. He finally told them, "I will not take a welding job while my brother is fighting this war." The Marines let him enlist--then they trained him to weld the rubberized tanks on aircraft. He always laughed about that.
A real man and a finer man never drew breath.

Good signs, seeing some Romney/Ryan signs on my commute to Boulder for work, not seeing a huge number of Barry signs and not a lot of bumper stickers this year --2004 and 2008 the Kerry and Barry stickers were everywhere (and I put a Romney sticker on my car --first time ever for a political sticker for me)
Bad signs. liberal female FB 'friends' still 'liking' Barry campaign stuff. The liberal that has p/t feed lease on my PasoFino and comes out to ride told me in 2011 when it was "generic republican TBD" that no way would she vote for Barry again and most of her friends had also stated such, but now she is waffling. For the record, I think Romney will pull it out in Ohio, but I agree, why not make a real play for Michigan, it has both a Republican Governor, Legislature, and the Romney name does mean something there. It's not the black hole some people think it is.
I have to think though, Romney's people have data we don't, and it's easy to be an armchair quarterback.
Ohio is a traditionally Republican state, as short as 2 years ago the GOP dominated every part of the ballot, so it's hardly some deep blue state now.
Elections almost always turn "national", I just don't see a realistic scenario where we win the popular vote but lose Ohio.
I don't know what the debate will do, but even the lopsided polls seem to make this election look like 1980.

You're simply wrong; it's for the most part a very conservative state with a couple urban blue hells that sometime cause it to jump on a wave election. The JEF has never been popular here; Stalin-Rodham trucked his pansy ass in the 2008 primary and in the general most of the counties went for Palin and that senile fuck she tried to drag across the finish line. But the urban fucks had a huge turnout; plus Twitch Strickland had that whore Jennifer Brunner passing every horseshit ballot that ACORN sent her. Guess what; Twitch is gone and Kasich will fight the bullshit.

Dave in FL has been analyzing the OH polls, and when you adjust for likely turnout, Romney has it by 4% or 5%.
That being said, CO + WI is one more EV than OH, and we've heard positive testimony from a WI moron or two.
To get the remaining 3 or 4 EV votes, there are a few states that are supposedly 50/50. If that's true the odds are very high that he gets at least one.
But a lot can happen in a few weeks. A guy with NPD has a 100% chance of trying to cheat, so watch for something even dirtier than the flat-out lies.

Therefore, a more realistic turnout model for this poll would have it tied or Romney up by a point or so in Ohio. Plus, there are obviously a lot of undecideds not yet committed to voting for either candidate. Barring any unforeseen events or information that badly damages Romney over the next three weeks, history shows that Romney will win at least 60% of the late undecideds. All of this taken together probably shows Romney currently up by 2-3% in Ohio, though that can definitely change in the next three weeks.

Having worked both Bush campaigns (2000 & 2004), Ohio will again be determined in Hamilton County (SW OH). The Ohio GOTV is as motivated as I've ever seen. Three weeks ago, two young ladies came knocking on doors in my condo complex. This past weekend two young men came knocking, part of a group of 30 college kids from Indiana. Most of my progressive 250+ FB friends had been posting anti-Romney threads for months - ZERO since the first debate. Ohio knows the governor has changed the economy and turned a deficit into a surplus, not Obama. Portman, in my district, is also enormously popular in Ohio. Mandell has erased a 17 point deficit and Harry Reid is flooding the airwaves with lying BS trying to help the most socialist member of the Senate, Sherrod Brown. And SE Ohio is coal country. Early ballot requests favor Republicans, Cuyahoga county has lost 180,000 registered Democrats. And do not for one minute believe early voting has gone 3-to-1 for Obama.

The campaign against the public unions was a major clusterfuck by the Republican party with shithead Kevin DeWine torpedoing Kasich, for which the Tea Party kicked his ass out of the Repub steering committee when the state primary happened. In that same vote Bammycare got rejected by a similar measure. I'm not sure if Sherrod Brown will be kicked out because he is a tool of the unions but I'm still hoping Josh Mandel will prevail. The Restraining Order is nervous because he's been carpet bombing the state with ads. Brown won his Senate seat against Mike DeWine, who was ok but it was in 2006 when there was a wave election against the Repubs.
