Hey, Remember When I Kept Saying This Would Happen?
— Ace

Gabe posted this earlier (and hello again, everyone), but I wanted to post it again, to say "See look how smart I am" and also because I don't know what's actually new news at this point. I haven't followed the news and in fact have barely been on the current events section of the internet.

Mitt Romney holds thin advantages over President Obama on leadership, personal values and honesty, according to a new poll for The Hill.

...

It found 48 percent of voters consider Romney the stronger leader, compared to 44 percent who favored Obama.

Similarly, 47 percent of likely voters also said Romney most shares their values while 44 percent picked Obama.

When asked which candidate voters considered more honest and trustworthy, 46 percent said Romney and 44 percent said Obama — a result within the poll’s 3 percentage point margin of error.

...

Obama has generally fared better than Romney throughout the campaign in polls assessing the candidatesÂ’ personal qualities.

In June, a USA Today/Gallup poll found 60 percent of voters considered Obama honest and trustworthy, compared to 50 percent for Romney. The Gallup survey also showed more people believed Obama shared their values (53 percent) than Romney (45 percent).

ObamaÂ’s biggest personal strength has been likability.

Anyway, for the past month I've written several times that when voters make their decision -- whether they announce it or still claim to be "waiting for all the facts" -- they begin saying the candidate they favor is better in all ways, even ones you wouldn't expect. Like when Obama was beating McCain, the public was saying Obama would be better on the deficit (!), terrorism (!!), and even taxes (!!!).

Consistent with the main line of my argument -- the election is almost over -- the public does seem to be breaking to Romney now on all these secondary questions. He's better for this, he's better at that.

Compare to this report from July 23rd:

Two-thirds of likely voters say the weak economy is WashingtonÂ’s fault, and more blame President Obama than anybody else, according to a new poll for The Hill.

It found that 66 percent believe paltry job growth and slow economic recovery is the result of bad policy. Thirty-four percent say Obama is the most to blame, followed by 23 percent who say Congress is the culprit. Twenty percent point the finger at Wall Street, and 18 percent cite former President George W. Bush.

I imagine the psychology is buyer's optimism-- when you research a new HDTV for three months and just decide to buy one already, you maybe convince yourself it's better (or at least pretty good) even in the few areas that it was bothering you.

I thought this would happen, and it is happening, which makes me firmer in my belief that the texture of the election campaign will make Romney the favorite. Barring any black swan that hurts Romney (after giving that kid the Gay Haircut, Romney blew him!) or helps Obama, his position will only strengthen, out to a persistent 5-8 point lead in the polls.

I was going to link the actual video, but it turns out the video is much dirtier than I remembered (content warning). (Actually, I didn't remember it at all.)

It was bothering me why this video was so dirty -- after all, the Cars were not known for being very dirty, apart from this silly confection about a long anticipated climax -- so I looked it up. The video was directed by Andy Warhol, and the uncensored version has any number of boobies. And when I say "any number," I mean eight.

I guess that's why I never saw it -- they didn't broadcast this, maybe.

I have now spent 40 minutes longer looking into the history of the Hello Again video than I planned, so I'll stop now.

Apples and Wet Turds.  One asks who is "more" honest and trustworthy while the other just plain honest and trustworthy.

It's clear that 60% of America is still dishonest, untrustworthy and just plain, friggin stupid.  Benedict Arnold was more honest and trustworthy than the Dog-Eating Retard.  Bernie Madoff is more honest and trustworthy than the Canine Connoisseur.

Partly, I think, because the MFM continues to bleat that although people may not like his policies (racists) people find Barry to be likeable. It's a total lie that he's likeable in the least but they drum that message all the time

At least Nixon was intelligent. Obama (pbuh) blathers platitudes and non-sequiturs. He never says anything substantive. I used to think it was because he was being careful. But now I realize it's because he is not very bright, and doesn't have the knowledge necessary to speak intelligently about anything.

As time passes our side is making more and more progress.  It's slow, it's not earth shaking, but it's progress.  We're pushing the leftards back.

All we have to do is keep up this steady, slow pace, and push the bastards back off the cliff into electoral doom.

I know that many here do not like Romney.  But we'll never get what we really want.  People in general are too stupid, and must be convinced to do part of the right thing bit by bit.  Over time, we can use the gradualism of the Left against them - roll them back bit by bit.  Americans are too easily spooked by anything that looks like big change, unless it's some kind of give-away.  So, we must tolerate people like Mitt who seem squishy and sub-optimal to us.

And take heart!  I think it's more and more plain every day that at long last, after Bush 1, Dole, Bush 2, and McCain - our side is finally fighting back a little!  Our side might actually be trying to win, rather than just keep it close!  This is refreshing.  This is new.  Mitt is no Reagan, but he's a million times better than the alternative.

Victory is not yet in the bag, but it's within reach.  We can pull this off.

Indeed.  People feel like they "should" like the jugeared fool.  One line I use from time to time when talking to those who feign to be undecided, is to ask them one question.  "Who would you rather live next to and share a beer with?"  Any honest person will have no trouble answering this question, usually in favor of Romney.  A great follow up question - who would you leave your kid or your pet with when you went away for a week end?  Again - it's a no brainer.  I wouldn't let Barky look after my goldfish.

The best and easiest way to do that is to take the gulf fields back from the arabs and persians who stole them in the forced nationalizations of 50 years ago.

All threats from the arab/persian/muslim world start and stop with control of the gulf oil fields.

BTW, we are almost solely reliant on oil from the Western hemisphere, already.

I don't grok this "controversy".  The city of Jerusalem's official website says Israel designated it the capital in 1950. It's like Mitt "asserted" that July is summer in North America.

These two figures are what really tell what's going on.  Obama can't use the 'let's blame Bush' mantra any more.  And when people blame Obama more than Wall Street, you know he's in trouble.

35 The gap between the actual reality of Obama and the corrupt and treasonous group of radicals inside his administration and out, and the completely spun and filtered general public's perception has to be be the largest in recorded history.
The MFM will hopefully be irreparably damaged by its abandonment of principle in pursuit of ideology without any official on the record disclosure their collective decision to discontinue news gathering in favor of propaganda.

Newspapers in the past have certainly championed their favorites editorially, but this has been a criminal conspiracy of broad scope.

The Preference Cascade Charade continues despite all polling, as a remedy and safeguard against the race card.

38 Naive blog post. The chances of liberal Democrat polling services publishing 5-8 point leads for Romney fall somewhere between zero and nada. Even if that was the reality they'd simply adjust their samples to make the contest appear closer. Then there's the elephant in the room: For Romney actually to lead Obama by 5 full percentage points it would mean he'd be garnering something like 65-plus percent of the white vote. Is that realistic? You have to keep in mind that Obama will receive supermajorities from various white demographics: public sector union members, college and grad students, FDR-era Democrats, urban liberals, Oprah women, etc. It will take a colossal effort to unseat Obama. The right needs to spend less time worrying about polling data and more time worrying about getting people off their couches and to the ballot booths.

Eh, won't work. Like anyother tangible product, once we sell it, what the buyer does with it is up to them. We ban the sell of food stuff to the middle east, it just means that the Chinesse can buy it from us, mark it up, and re-sell it to the Middle East. China then makesa profit and scores political points.
Posted by: Mallamutt, RINO President for LIfe at July 30, 2012 09:22 AM (OWjjx)

That's fine with me.  That will still drive their food cost WAY up.  It will still be destabilizing.  And China doesn't need any more points with the muz anyway.  They're both f-ing evil, and thus mutually supporting when it comes to their mutual enemies.

Posted by: Reactionary at July 30, 2012 05:43 AM (xUM1Q)

45 And China doesn't need any more points with the muz anyway. The Chinese have their own, very quiet issues with radical Islam (remember the Uighurs, anyone?) and I suspect things like this are more or less just trying to keep them at bay and point them at rivals. If the US got neutralized, they'd point them towards the Russians. They're riding a hungry tiger doing this. I wonder how long they'll pull it off.

46 Preference cascade, huh?

I figure Romney would even play a better game of tiddly-winks than Obama, just because O has no idea which way is up. The man is not only evil but incompetent. As for the more relevant categories of skill-in-handling, can anyone here name one where Romney wouldn't be better, just because he has an adult view of reality?

Romney wasn't my first choice, and he's definitely too mushy-middle for my taste, but that still puts him way way out of Obama's level of SCOAMF-ness.

When people start attributing positive opinions across the board to someone or something it's called the "halo effect" in the field of market research (polling).  Likeability in one or more key areas bleeds over and results in positive perceptions of other characteristics.  It's a similar concept to Ace's preference cascade, and it can happen in reverse too, where dislike of a subject in one area can make people think negatively about it in secondary or unrelated aspects.
