— Slublog We need to talk.
Mitt Romney, a guy who has run an Olympics ceremony, offered some tepid criticism of your security for the games and you folks pretty much freaked the hell out over it.
Could Romney have answered the question differently? Of course. But in this case, he chose honesty over political nicety and you pummeled him for it. I don't mean to be impolite, but your citizens haven't been paragons of diplomatic nicety in criticizing my country's political leaders. I'm just spitballing here, but I cannot recall a protest in the United States where our citizens created and toppled a statue of either Tony Blair or David Cameron. Or where, encouraged by a demagogue, a large group of Americans booed any of your political leaders or candidates.
I have no particular affection for Mitt Romney but I will vote for him in November. However, watching a crowd of Britons jeering an American citizen at the prompting of London's mayor really pissed me off. Watching our media collectively wet themselves in support of those Britons moves my mood from pissed off to blood boiling/higher blood pressure. The special relationship should go both ways. In reality, I guess it doesn't.
So Britain, based on the recent behavior of your leaders and citizens, I fixed your famous poster:

My grandfather fought to secure your freedom, but if you want to be butthurt over this nonsense, go ahead. I'll just say this...

Ask him why he doesn't want voter ID?
Isn't he afraid that the Republicans, perfidious cheaters that we are, are going to steal the election through multiple voting and ballot stuffing?
If he isn't afraid of that, why not?

You know, if someone who'd done something before - successfully, not Democratically - told me he had concerns about my preparations to do the same thing, I'd listen. Listen hard. Might learn something.
But that's me.

On the Olympic thing. all I saw was him saying there were 3 elements. The first two, the athletes and the volunteers, he said were undoubtedly raring to go for this deal. The third element was the British people. I took it from the perspective of someone putting on a show - that he was saying - "We're ready at this end, you guys just have to show up and cheer!"
Or was there something ELSE they were flying off the handle on?

Although I still haven't figured out if Indiana marks the drivers licenses of foreign nationals (legal residents can be licensed to drive) and drivers under 18 so they can't be used for voting.

OK, I looked at the clip, and it's the same thing I've seen.
This is one of those things where I am at a loss about what anybody is complaining about. He said he had heard a couple of things that concerned him, but didn't really know if they were even accurate. (Gee, it's almost like he's actually following what's going on there, and is concerned about everything going OK!) Then he said that the athletes and the volunteers were top notch, and now it's up to Britain to show up and cheer.
Let's not be so surprised at the media and government reaction in Britain. Remember - they're liberal assholes! They don't even have the sense to say "at least THIS GUY probably would KEEP that Churchill bust, if we sent it back again." Britain resents the US for how they needed to be rescued by us in WWII, and now they resent being beholden to Mitt Romney for rescuing the Olympics, so they could host it years later.
Yeah, this is a big-time "You're welcome" situation.

I betcha Mitt would agree that he screwed the pooch on this one, and would rather he hadn't said what he said. I hope he gets his butt back to the United States pronto, where candidates for US office rightly belong, and gets working talking to American voters. You are absolutely correct about that - Mitt has no business running around overseas as an American candidate (I don't care if he had a whole stable in the games) but Mitt didn't say anything wrong about Britain's preps for the Olympics, at all. If Britain's pride is hinging on this Eurotrash pseudo-sports event then that's their problem and they should have done it correctly. But, that's what happens when the government runs everything.

I'd be amazed if Romney knows the truth regarding British Olympic preparations apart from what he's read in the press, which is largely critical and, as he should know from personal experience, not always accurate. So he was never really "telling the truth", since he isn't in a position to know it. More likely, he was riffing off the cuff based on the bad press he's heard, and effectively echoing that negative vibe. That's a bad move, in fact a stupid move.
Additionally I'd argue that sport is not a sign of cultural decadence. That is not to say that obsession with sports can't go to far, but sport in its essential form is quite a healthy thing culturally. Achievement in sport is an expression of excellence, and participation in sport can be educational for the purposes of honorable conduct, of personal fitness, of self-discipline, of teamwork, of fairness, and many other things. The good parts of the form of sports is in fact what the Olympics claim to pursue. Whether the Olympics have ever succeeded in this or not is a fair and debatable question. But one shouldn't be too fast to write off the whole enterprise.
Oh, sure, to a certain worldview sport is a sign of decadence. It is, for example, un-Islamic. I would argue that those who hold such worldviews are, in fact, decadent in the Nietzchean sense. They ironically display a lack of moral and intellectual discpline and enthusiasm.
Posted by: Cowboy at July 26, 2012 11:12 PM (Bbiii)
Not at all. The Olympics has never been anything but petty Eurotrash tribalism on display. It's never been about sport. It's never been about the best competition. It's never been about sportsmanship (there's so much cheating in the Olympics - with the aid of the various governments - that it's embarrassing to watch, often).
The Olympics has always been a Eurotrash perversion of competition which is to say that they've always been more concerned with petty national rivalries than the sports competitions and that is how the modern Olympics has always been. The Eurotrash destroy everything they touch. And the rest of the world hasn't done much to help, either. But the US used to not care and just send our amateurs there, obeying the rules that no one else did, and still kicking most of their asses (except the East German women swimmers with 64 chromosomes and various other national professionals whose only real job was ... the Olympics). But now, even that is gone and there's not much left to the games but advertising for second-rate competitions, often, and watching the latest country make a mess of hosting the games as it runs itself billions into debt.
Eurotrash hate the idea of individuals, which is why everything they do and everything they see has to have some sort of flag next to it (which is why the whole EU and Euro was such a laugh riot from the start).
Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at July 26, 2012 11:21 PM (X3lox)

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at July 26, 2012 11:24 PM (X3lox)
As for BTH's comment about decadence, he clearly was talking about the emphasis on sport, not competition itself. I enjoy watching and playing sports. But that's as far as it goes...if my team wins a title, or if some Olympian wins gold, yay! My bills are still due tomorrow.
The whole Penn State thing is a good example of what BTH was talking about.

I think these international committees go out of their way to pick cities that can't possibly use the facilities afterwards ... just for kicks. As to why the cities put themselves out for these expenses, I have no idea. They could take the same money and build things that the world notices and actually get used for more than a couple of weeks.
But they're ... jobs programs!! And no individual built them or uses them, but they all get to pay for them! Everyone loves a white elephant. Something for the locals to talk about as it decays.
At least in Sarajevo their Olympic swimming pool got a lot of use after the games. Some of the best tennis players in the world trained in the drained out pool.

It's exactly this kind of pandering that ended up costing hundreds if not thousands of combat deaths by delaying the Iraqi Offensive by critical weeks, giving the Turks the opportunity to change their mind about 4ID. That allowed huge amounts of materiel and personnel to flee to neighboring countries through Northern routes, eventually returning to form the backbone of the insurgency. There's also no telling what else escaped (looking at you, Syrian Baathists).
All this sacrificed for the worthless contribution of British infantry whose only utility was to prance around without doing any counter-insurgency. They would take weeks to "clear" their "patrols" ahead of time into outliers of cities like Basra, leaving the entire population at the mercy of the local Iranian-supported Shiite militias. Obviously, they never recovered any intelligence of value. Their greatest "contribution" was to whine about "combat" deaths from things like mortars - even while the US Military knew that they accomplished nothing of value beyond parading their coffins like Palestinian "martyrs".
BRITS: "We're Heroes! Look how many of us died!"
CENTCOM: "That's the cost, what mission did you accomplish"
BRITS: "
CENTCOM: "Where did they die?"
BRITS: "At Basra Internation Airport, where we're always holed up, of course. But we killed thousands of insurgents!"
CENTCOM: "Where are these dead insurgents? Show them so we can do some intelligence kits on the corpses."
BRITS: "Ummm...well, we just made that up but nobody can prove that we didn't kill insurgents with our arty rounds can they?"
CENTCOM: "......"
CENTCOM: "Where did your rounds land? Who was your forward spotter?"
BRITS: "Ummm...well, we didn't have one since we never go into the city limits, but I think they landed somewhere close to where our contacts told us we had permission."
CENTCOM: "What do you mean by "permission"?
BRITS: "We got permission to return fire into these areas."
CENTCOM: "Permission from whom?"
BRITS: "The Khazaali brothers."
CENTCOM: "Qais and Laith Khazaali are insurgents."
BRITS: "Details...details..."
BRITS: "Anyway: you owe us for saving Basra. You'll have to go bomb Libya or Argentina some time - we'll let you know."
CENTCOM: "You didn't "save" anything. You've left Basra overrun with Iranian-supported militia and the US Marines and the Iraqi QRF are going to have to clean them out."
BRITS: "Well, have fun with that, but I've got some friendly advice: don't use any of the Iraqi troops that we trained like the 42nd...they're even more worthless and cowardly than we are."
CENTCOM: "Wow, it's scary to think that's even possible."

A day or so ago it was all "Mitt's going to go and listen to leaders abroad, talk about how cool being Anglo-Saxon is, show what a great statesman he is, and reset the relationship with our allies across the pond." And now it's "Fuck the Brits with army boots on." And that's just after 24 hours over there. Amateur.
I'm smelling butthurt alright. It's coming from this post and the comments in this thread.
And a hint: The only person in the UK right now who gives a damn about where Churchill's bust is, is Mitt Romney. And if he does get into the White House, he's going to have to ask the Brits nicely if he can have a loan of their multi-thousand-dollar artwork. It won't be his by right. Every time he mentions the damn thing over there as if he'll own it, he just pisses them off some more. Not that you guys care, but bear it in mind next time he comes out with that line.

Screw the Brits and their delicate feelings. Canada hosted the Winter Olympics 2 years ago and the Brits couldn't shut their traps about how crappy, stupid, terrible etc. the organization was. They even bitched and pissed about the weather and how ashamed we Canadians should be that the snow was melting. I remember the craptacular little preview they gave of these games at the close of the Beijing Olympics. Just a bunch of spotty drab teens loafing and lunging around a double-decker bus that turned into something like a turf-covered tank with some skanky singer draped over the top. And there were the Chinese looking on contemptuously, after their gorgeous cast-of-thousands synchronized spectacular. I can't wait to see what a degraded wallow in incompetence the next 2 weeks is going to be.

And we all know how British journalism (from the BBC on down), following our own MSM's lead and worse, caricatures and demonizes Republicans. Like, second coming of the KKK. Here, we have access to reality on the ground and our own experience and the American right-wing blogosphere to negate those MSM narratives. In the UK (or any other country), they much more blindly rely on MSM reportage (and the authority of, say, the NYT) to glean impressions of what's actually going on in the USA.
So for British politicians to bash the Republican opponent to Obama (wrapped up in huffy offense, supposedly patriotic pro-Brit pretext) is an easy way to pander to Brit voters. Especially Tory politicians desperate to be re-elected. Many Brit "conservative" politicians are like our McCain or Bloomberg or worse (akin to pundits like Frum) who bend over backwards to pander to progressive/ left-wing/ PC ideology.

I mean, come on, they seized on an anonymous somebody's use of the term "Anglo-Saxon" to pull the race card and contrive a controversy? They've been on the lookout for the slightest little scrap to get Romney. " The "Anglo-Saxon" silliness and the Olympics remarks are both trifles, but they'll expend as much huffing and puffing on them as they would if they were real controversies.

LOL. The Brits loved their own Churchill so much that they threw his ass out of office the minute he secured their lives and property and turned 100% socialist. And they pretended that Bomber Harris never even existed.
The Brits prefer Barky. They deserve Barky. Mitt can find a bust of Churchill in America to put back in the White House.

Actually, Mitt is like a guest at a party who is asked by the host: "So, are you enjoying the party?" and answers "It's great, thanks!"
And then the host asks, "How do you like the music? Tell me honestly, now." And the guest answers, "Well, since you asked, and since you said you want an honest answer, it's not really to my taste."
IMHO Mitt is in the clear here, because he didn't just make an off-the-cuff remark -- he was giving his honest answer to a question specifically asked of him.
