Holder "Retracts" Claim That Bush Was Briefed About Fast & Furious Gun-Selling
— Ace

It's amusing that the one additional page of information they released today concerns the Bush-era "Wide Receiver" program.

Grassley released this memo:

To: Reporters and Editors

Re: Second retraction of Fast and Furious Assertions

Da: Wednesday, June 20, 2012

The Justice Department has retracted a second statement made to the Senate Judiciary Committee. During a hearing last week, Attorney General Eric Holder claimed that his predecessor, then-Attorney General Michael Mukasey, had been briefed about gunwalking in Operation Wide Receiver. Now, the Department is retracting that statement and claiming Holder "inadvertently" made that claim to the Committee. The Department's letter failed to apologize to former Attorney General Mukasey for the false accusation. This is the second major retraction the Justice Department has made in the last seven months. In December 2011, the Department retracted its claim that the ATF had not allowed illegally purchased guns to be trafficked to Mexico. Sen. Chuck Grassley's letter and the Department's response can be viewed here-1.

In addition, the Justice Department released only one page of additional material prior to the Attorney General's meeting on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. It is a page of handwritten notes by a public affairs specialist for the Deputy Attorney General, which the Department says it "just recently discovered." The notes indicate that when Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein met with senior ATF officials on April 28, 2010, regarding the problem of gunwalking in Wide Receiver, the Deputy Attorney General's public affairs specialist also attended the meeting. These notes can be viewed here-2.

The notes indicate that Fast and Furious was also a topic discussed at the meeting, in addition to Wide Receiver. These notes further corroborate contemporaneous emails in 2010 that show Criminal Division Chief Lanny Breuer and Weinstein seemed to have been more concerned about the press implications of gunwalking than they were about making sure ATF ended the practice. (These emails can be viewed here-3.) The notes also undermine the claim that senior DOJ officials failed to "make the connection" between the gunwalking in Wide Receiver--which Breuer admitted to knowing about--and gunwalking in Fast and Furious. In fact, both cases were discussed by senior Department leadership and senior ATF leadership.

"There's Been A Tendency of this Administration To... Hide Behind Executive Privilege, Whenever Something Shakey Is Taking Place... They'd Be Best Served By Coming Clean."

Yeah, you said it, buddy.

Wait -- you said that?!

50 I just posted this on the earlier Holder lied thread but since it is now dead I'll repost here

Of course we know what the plan was and it went down exactly like they planned.

1. Have Hillary and other spread lie that American guns crossing the border for crime and due to lax gun control laws.
2. Sell guns to crime bosses in Mexico knowing that they will be used in crimes. Keep0 record of serial numbers.
3. When Mexican authorities find guns and ask for investigation supply the numbers and call for "new laws"

All that went down as planned until an American officer was killed by these guns and a whistle blower ratted them out.

To think they could keep something like this secret is the epitome of arrogance.

54 I noticed the Democrat members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee had no good answers on why the documents were not being released. They kept changing the subject instead. Trying to assert "ongoing cases" a year and a half after Brian Terry's death makes no sense. What cases? Secret cases? Against whom? Also asserting "national security" rings hollow... nobody's talking about terrorists or opposing armies. These are criminal matters. The distraction attempted was asserting that the real problem is guns, and they need to take them.

You know, I was pondering the difference between Wide Receiver (who comes up with these names) and F and F.  Wide Receiver has goals that can be clearly articualted.  We will place RFID transmitters in the stocks.  We will sell those to bad guys.  We will trace where the guns go.  We will then arrest the bad guys.  See, that's comprehensible.  The fact that it failed doesn't mean the idea is stupid from the get go.

Fast and Furious, on the other hand, appears to have been developed by the Underpants Gnomes.

 1.  Sell guns to narcoterrorists.

2. ??????

231 Political observation:

Romney is already hitting Obama on the Immigration issue by noting his actions aren't a sign of leadership, but one of narcissism. It's an overt political action - which he already claimed he couldn't legally do - being done now, with 140 days until the election, out of desperation for his own self-preservation.

This coming from the same administration which is trying to cover-up by hiding behind executive privileged that it had "walked" and allowed several thousand weapons to be shipped illegal into Mexico into the hands of the drug cartels.

The same administration which two weeks ago claimed it couldn't do anything legally for illegal immigrants, is the same administration who shipped weapons to the homeland of many of these same illegal immigrants that have been implicated in 300 murders in Mexico; 50cal BMG rifles which have forced down Mexican Police helicopters fighting the cartels on at least two occasions.

Yet, instead of trying to find justice for the death of Brian Terry, or the hundreds of Mexicans slain at the hand of these weapons the Obama administration allowed across the border; he blocks justice.

We have a president who can't act, until he needs to in his own self-interest,

315 One of the big news outfits did a piece a day or two ago about the U of VA letting its chancellor go, or the chancellor quitting, or whatever.  A blog site criticized the writers of the story because it had no facts at all in it about the origins of the separation, the followup to it, etc.  In other words, no facts other than the separation itself.

Turns out there is a reason for the lack of background, but that is not relevant to my post here.  I think what will unfurl from the MFM in all of its personages and entities will be a lot like that story about the separation at the U of VA.

No background at all about F&F will be given.  The story will be presented as a present-day attack by congressional Republicans against the White House and the DOJ, focus on Obama and Holder, with  political nastiness at its core.

They'll say, Holder was dragged through the Capital building practically in shackles, while Republican members of Congress, dressed as Roman centurians, spat upon him, called him filthy names, struck him with reeds and lance shafts, and demanded his crucifixion.

Crucify him! they called.

Why?  Just because.  They are Republicans and all they know is blood lust and vengeance.  And it is racial, of course.

You know that announcer that comes on speaking rapid-fire cautions about what can happen to you if you take that drug, when a Viagra commercial is doing its wind-up?  So fast you can barely understand?  Shorten that greatly, and that is how the MFM will tell about F&F after they have given you the story about the persecution of Eric Holder and Barack Obama by the Republican congress

Watch it, starting tonight.  Read it, beginning with the WaPo and NYT stories and editorials and op-eds tomorrow.

They want to turn this around so the firehoses are aimed at Issa and company.

Let's see how they make out.

It was when Al Gore screamed, "How dare they!," I knew he was a rotten apple. He became very 'high and mighty' post-2000. Then came the downfall. Divorce. Attempted rape. Who knows what else.

Weiner, we all knew, was a loud-mouthed little punk. Weiner spent most of his time in Congress impugning the characters of good people (generally).

Weiner's downfall was very satisfying and well-deserved.

383 Obama's electoral strategy must be really close ...

1) Latinos are underrepresented in swing states. While the Latino vote is frequently portrayed as a critical voting bloc, in truth it is concentrated in only a few swing states with just a handful of electoral votes. The only states where Latinos make up more than 10 percent of the electorate are: Arizona (16 percent of the electorate in 200 , California (18 percent), Colorado (13 percent), Florida (14 percent), Nevada (15 percent), New Mexico (41 percent), and Texas (20 percent).

Of these, only Colorado, Florida, and Nevada are swing states; New Mexico and Arizona are at best borderline swing states. In Florida, the Latino vote largely (though decreasingly) comprises voters of Cuban descent and is therefore atypical of other Latino electorates.

So in the end, weÂ’re talking about Colorado and Nevada as the states where this is likely to produce dividends of any size, for a total of 15 electoral votes.

394 Weiner's downfall was very satisfying and well-deserved. Posted by: Soothsayer at June 20, 2012 03:07 PM

Weiner's "downfall" was essentially meaningless in comparison to the shit being pulled by the Obama regime right now, today.

Yes, it was good to see Weiner pay for his arrogance, and good to see Ace hammering on him without letup. All well-deserved, as you say.

But when Obama's co-conspirators are wadding up the law and using it for toilet paper, much of the response from our side has been snark and occasional thoughtful comments, mixed in -- mostly at sites like Tepid Air and NRO -- with sidestepping (Poppin' Fresh's current screed comments on another blogger's postulation that mentioning Romney hurts blog traffic, supplanting a T-Paw for VP? earlier thread) and weak-kneed statements that gee, Holder isn't being very cooperative, isn't he?

In other words, we are defending our country with snark and silence. Ordinarily, I wouldn't mind so much, but I'm losing patience with the "good optics/hey, he's got his issues, but...." attitude toward Obama. And the damage being done is far too great.
