How Can The Administration Possibly Explain These Two Benghazi Reports?
— JohnE.

First from the Telegraph (doing the journalistic work American journalists won't do):

But the real smoking gun is whether the Obama administration was warned in advance that al-Qaeda was planning an attack. A number of Israeli newspapers have suggested that Washington was warned as early as September 4 – a week earlier – that the environment in Benghazi was becoming increasingly hostile and anti-American, while in London the Foreign Office took the decision to withdraw all its consular staff from Benghazi two months before the murders. This decision was based on an intelligence assessment made by MI6 that al-Qaeda was openly operating in the area following a failed assassination attempt on Sir Dominic Asquith, Britain's ambassador to Libya, in June.

It is well known that British intelligence works closely with its counterpart in America, and if MI6 knew al-Qaeda was operating in the Benghazi region, then it is highly likely that the CIA did too.

And this from the Associated Press today:
American diplomats in Libya made repeated requests for increased security for the consulate in Benghazi and were turned down by officials in Washington, leaders of a House committee said Tuesday.

In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Chairman Darrell Issa and Rep. Jason Chaffetz said their information came from "individuals with direct knowledge of events in Libya."

Issa, R-Calif. and Chaffetz, R-Utah said the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans was the latest in a long line of attacks on Western diplomats and officials in Libya in the months before Sept. 11.

Knowing all this, what possible justification could there be for denying increased security requests? On 9/11. Where al-Qaeda was known to be openly operating.

Full-blown scandal.

From what I've seen in excuses from the left, apparently they didn't want a "fortress" consulate because that might give the wrong impression or something.

Because, you know, we wouldn't want to appear anything less than welcoming and trusting to our Peaceful Muslim Overlords.  And heaven forbid we employ armed Marines who might be seen as an occupying imperialist force.

while in London the Foreign Office took the decision to withdraw all its consular staff from Benghazi two months before the murders. This decision was based on an intelligence assessment made by MI6 that al-Qaeda was openly operating in the area following a failed assassination attempt on Sir Dominic Asquith, Britain's ambassador to Libya, in June.

This is the most damning item of all.    If BRITAIN pulled out its     diplomatic staff TWO MONTHS before 9/11, and if there'd already been an assassination attempt on THEIR Ambassador, then there was clear and present evidence well before the Benghazi attack that al Qaeda was operating openly and violently     against Western interests    in Libya.       When the Brits decide things are too hot to handle, then America should be feeling      that much more heat.      We are by far the bigger,     juicier target for jihadist    violence.

By not    following Britain's lead and      evacuating our diplomatic staff, or even giving them decent security measures,       the State Department communicated     to the terrorists, in no uncertain terms, "We're    not concerned with    the safety of our Ambassador and other staff in your country.     Have fun!"

This isn't a scandal.   This is     incompetence and malfeasance that borders on       the criminal.

I count three major scandals in the news lately: (1) Benghazi, with the obvious and absurd lying, plus a cover-up (2) F and F, with the recent report which proves that Holder's being held in contempt was not political, and which begs the question "Why would 14 high ranking ATF officials secretly collude to send guns into Mexico?" and (3) WH move to silence legally required layoff notices until after the election.

If a Republican President's administration had sent a Gay Ambassador...to a muslim-controlled  hot spot like Lybia...without providing a huge security detail to ensure his safety...

We would never hear the end of it.

The media would be stoking that fire 24/7.

"They sent a Gay Man to his death!"

"They stationed a Gay Ambassador in a muslim country to get him killed!"

This coverup that they've been engaging in...also includes 'not mentioning' the part about sending a gay man into an area where being a gay man is a death sentence.

Hillary whose diplomatic skills/experience before now was throwing lamps at Bill or doing Bill's clean up ops. Wars have been started over an ambassador or consular getting slapped--so embassy security shouldn't be buried in your organizational structure.

252 I'm so sick of the abject stupidity on the right. Nobody--by that I mean 95% of the population--gives a shit about the details of this event. What matters is that the event has taken our attention away from our depressed economy and has diverted it to foreign policy where, thanks to the incompetence and/or sabotage of the Romney campaign he has failed to challenge Obama. Every single moment spent talking about this is one moment less talking about Obama's actual weaknesses. The media is the master of propaganda and they want to flatter you into thinking that you personally know it all when in fact you know nothing. This whole affair is about helping Obama get re-elected. Period, end of story.

Posted by: Hello, it's just me Donna at October 02, 2012 12:47 PM (9+ccr)

I'm guessing Susan Rice is taking one for the team on this one since hers is the Administration face and voice most closely identified with the original misinformation campaign conducted immediately after the Ambassador's murder, although how they'll spin her responsibility for it and explain what a UN Ambassador's role might be when it comes to consulate security issues is anyone's guess. Anything to protect Hillary Clinton's political future. (I strongly doubt this scandal will have much of an impact on Obama's short-term reelection chances one way or the other--the MFM will see to that.)

And if it isn't Susan Rice spreadeagled on the altar of Hillary's presidential hopes in 2016, then it will probably be CIA Director David Petraeus. And what the hell was he doing or not doing while all this was going on, anyway?

I'd expand AtC's wonderful rant to include ALL so-called "special interest" groups.

It's unbelievably racist, IMO, to assume that the only issue hispanics care about is      illegal immigration.    It's equally racist to assume the only issues blacks care about      are     welfare    and      subsidized housing.         It's ageist to believe that the only thing seniors care about is Medicare and all young people care about is student loans.

People are not categories.   We don't fit in boxes.        Some of us can actually       understand that just because we WANT something doesn't mean we can or should GET it.        My "special interest" is only special because someone's told me it is.   That's complete bullshit.   The term "special interest group" should     be    mocked and derided for the alienating piece of garbage it is.

This is why I HATE politicians,   but especially Democrats.

"Full blown scandal"?  Look, can't you morons remember the MSM's rules?

A. Democrat fuck-up = hey, the world is a nasty place and shit and speedbumps happens.  Just thank God we have a leader who is calm and unflappable.  Besides, since it has already happened, it's old news.

B. Republican fuck-up = either they let it happen on purpose (LIHOP) or made it happen on purpose (MIHOP), so it is either criminal negligence or treason.  We'll run with this in multiple page-one stories for weeks until we find out which it is, and what other Republicans our oh-so-insightful Democrat experts say might be complicit in it.  Stay tuned!

367 Whoa.

On September 12 the British media reported multiple warnings the USA did not respond to in Libya of prior terrorist attacks and plans for terrorism.

On September 12, 2012, the White House and the State Dept denied terrorism and stated, multiple times for eleven days or so, that this little protest (with RPG's and flamethrowers) was due to an obscure youtube.

On the weekend of Sept 15th, Susan Rice, on five different major networks, stated the youtube theory.

Sept. 20th, Jay Carney finally admits it was a terrorist attack on 9/11/12 that killed Ambassador Stevens and three others in Libya.

Meanwhile, yesterday, it was revealed that an outsourced British company. Blue Mountain  (with Libyans) served as the sole protection of an American Ambassador.

Slowly, drip..drip..drip..the news is reaching Americans who read USA Today or watch CNN. Eli Lake of the Daily Beast has led the way, along with Steve Hayes and Bret Baier on FOX, Mark Steyn and Jonah Goldberg on CNRO, plus conservative blogs.

Congressman Issa, chair of the Oversight Committee, has requested meetings with the State Dept starting October 10th.

The VP debate, with our future VP Ryan, is on October 11th and will cover foreign and domestic issues.

Major scandal finally being revealed along with Fast and Furious. Let's roll.

Anyone who receives state, county or federal entitlements already has had to clear any bureaucratic hurdle required to get the bennies. Even patients at state mental hospitals have state issued IDs. So, the short answer to your question is...NO.

I'm sorry for you that your alleged place of residence makes you "take a number and wait all morning". In PA we have a state portal that allows us to do all our govt. business online.

The alleged difficulty and hardship of obtaining the ID was disproven by one of the chief plaintiffs against the state, an elderly woman who proudly appeared on the front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer, after she had secured her new Voter ID, and AFTER she had testified about how it was such a hardship for her to obtain one.

And Bush should have done what, exactly? Declare martial law based on completely non-specific info? Declared war? What? What would you lefties have said then? The Obama administration was warned about specifically about BENGHAZI, a  very local situation where basic prudence, i.e., genuine security, for a very small number of people, around an IMPORTANT date. Hell, the embassy BEGGED for more security.

Tell me, where in Bush's briefing did it say that on 9/11/01, four planes would attack NYC and Washington?

Try another tactic. Obama owns this turd sandwich. Oh, and what's the administration doing about it? Obama gonna suit up again and help the SEALS kill the perpetrators?

But the Dems need as many state employees padding the payroll as possible, but that's another story. There is no line. You tell the person what you're there for and he tells you to go to section A, B, or straight to hell -- if his meds aren't working. You take a seat in the proper section, where there might be as many as ten people in front of you. In about 10 to 20 minutes your number is called. Everything is pretty digitized, and your picture ID is printed out in about five minutes. Total time? About half an hour.

473 Jordan,

The main problem is individual state requirements to register.  A personal example.  My family owned a farm in VA.  I decided after college to apply to a VA school.  I changed my residence to our farm, paid VA taxes, register to vote and voted up there.  I did not get into the school I wanted to so I returned to NC.  When I got back, my old voter registration was still valid, VA never notified NC.  When I went back to the farm two years later, after voting many times in NC, I checked my VA registration.   It was still valid.

The opportunities for fraud are too great not to crack down on voter fraud.  Voter fraud is STEALING your rights.  That, my friend, is what this is all about.

Protecting the honest vote is the cornerstone of our rights.

I had to wait a couple hours and pay $21. It's quick and easy to get license plates, but ID is a pain. Also, every kid taking the written exam cheats by using a mobile to look up the answers. I pointed this out to a DMV employee and got the verbal equivalent of a shrug. WTF?

Posted by: Jordan at October 02, 2012 10:30 AM (RSG1I)

475 Why is the media so complicit in these lies? I can tell you what I think.
In 2003, the media looked at President Bush gearing up for an invasion of Iraq after hitting Afghanistan and were horrified. They looked at their past (accurate, good faith) reporting on terrorism and terrorist ties in Iraq and decided that they had beat the drums for war.
So they did an abrupt shift, avoiding even the word terrorism, downplaying any terrorist ties anywhere, avoiding anything that might stir up the push for war, and following the Drum Effect, Kevin Drum's argument that even if Bush is right about Iran's nuclear weapons attempts - which he believed was true - he wouldn't back it or report it because it might help Republicans and possibly lead to war.
So now, faced with an obvious act of war against the United States, they're trying hard as humanly possible to admit it and to avoid saying anything that might get Americans stirred up in fury and demand for retribution.

Every fraudulent vote cast erases someone else's vote. Constitutionality aside, I'm inclined to weigh voter ID laws on a utilitarian basis: does this law prevent more fraudulent votes than it disenfranchises legal voters? From what I've read, voter impersonation is rare, I think only half a dozen convictions in my state since the '90s. On the other hand, not having ID is common. Often, people simply lose it, forget to renew it, or never even bothered to get it in the first place. Voter ID laws will prevent more legal, registered votes than fraudulent ones.

Oh, to have an insider at the WH or in Vegas with Barry and Valerie Jarrett as the news keeps pounding the attack in Libya they want to go away.

Has anyone seen Hillary lately (other than at the UN and meeting with world leaders Obama refused to meet with?).

Has anyone seen Janet Napolitano lately? Shouldn't, uh, Homeland Security be concerned about the rise of Al Qaeda and the continuing threat of terrorist attacks in the USA? Too much to ask for anything like reassurance by this transparent and wunderbar administration?

CNN and ABC are starting to pay attention to the ever-growing mushroom cloud on the horizon of Benghazigate.

Yet! Jay Carney still refuses to discuss, as it is a State Dept and FBI matter. I guess the WH is just a sort of volunteer office, not connected to the State Dept and each Dept Secretary and Czar under Buhrock simply run rogue agencies with no communication or accountability.

I want the scandals of Benghazigate and Fast and Furious above the fold and examined in great detail. Go get 'em Rep Issa.

490 Not having voter ID is not common. Nearly everyone in America has valid photo ID, either a driver's license or an ID card. You can't write a check, get a library card, rent anything, even register to vote in some places without photo ID. Many places require a photo ID to get a job.
Its simply a myth that even a small minority are lacking photo ID and as I noted, every state I've ever seen that has passed voter ID laws also includes provision for free picture ID to vote.
In other words, your objections are invalid. Surely you're all for the program now, right? Because you hate voter fraud and see it for the vile destruction of democracy that it is?

496 So what you're saying then, Jordan, is that your opposition to these laws has nothing to do with stated concerns about disenfranchisement or lack of ID, you just are afraid Democratic victories are threatened.
That's the only conclusion anyone can reach if you keep ignoring the facts and holding to demonstrable lies. That your statements are cover for something else.
See, I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, that you really are concerned about constitutional rights and the sinister feel of being required to "show your papers" while voting. You are not willing to extend that to anyone who disagrees with you, you're simply convinced it must be based on evil intent.
But if you're going to simply blow off what anyone says that counters your arguments... what conclusion must be inevitably left?

497 "You and your liberal buddies have never called for the elimination of background checks or any of the other of the bullshit hurdles associated with buying a firearm. " Your liberal candidate has done more to block access to firearms than Obama. He supported all major gun control proposals, often going much farther than the Feds. Permanent weapons ban, the CPA, tripling fees for gun owners. I am liberal on most social issues, but not this one.

498 Many places require a photo ID to get a job.

ALL places are supposed to require a photo ID when they submit the I-9 form that proves you're authorized to work in this country.  It just doesn't have to have an address on it (I've used my passport, as it establishes both identity and citizenship).

499 Also, every kid taking the written exam cheats by using a mobile to look up the answers. I pointed this out to a DMV employee and got the verbal equivalent of a shrug. WTF?

For a liberal, the point of the DMV testing is to get you a certificate and get them money. Certificates good, standards upholding certificates bad.

The ostensible -purpose- (seeing if you're competent) isn't the question.

Which is funny. Because your response "WTF?" shows that you realize "Hey, this isn't right" while at the same fucking time arguing that making it tougher it racist/onerous/suppression.

CLUEBAT, meet Jordan.

500 Get this: Oregon requires your birth certificate and several other forms of ID to get a driver's license and ID card. The reason is that the legislature was uncomfortable with the motor-voter bill and how easy it would be for the hordes of non citizen Mexicans in the state to register to vote, so they made it really hard to get a license.
Here's where it gets funny. I have a Certificate of Live Birth from Colorado where I was born, with my other important documents. that's not good enough, you have to have an actual official copy of your birth certificate.

Hi Jordan. Is the Texas Legislature still in session?

502 I have a Certificate of Live Birth from Colorado where I was born, with my other important documents. that's not good enough, you have to have an actual official copy of your birth certificate.

My daughter has this problem. And New York State does not issue "actual official copy of your birth certificate". But they will send a Certificate of Live Birth with a seal and a letter directly to whomever you're directing it to.

(I sent it directly to the US Passport Office, even the crazy places accept Passports as sufficient.)

Posted by: Al at October 02, 2012 11:14 AM (MzQOZ)

503 Left out that they do issue -one- Birth Certificate. What NY won't do is issue a replacement. Evar. It's Certificates of Live Birth then. Like Obama's.

505 Seriously though. F&F Guns killed Mexican citizens by the truckload. These assholes are skating on it and still blaming Bush. The MFM has been quiet about it. This - compared to F&F and the underlying reasons for it - IS just a bump in the road.

506 "F&F Guns killed Mexican citizens by the truckload. These assholes are skating on it and still blaming Bush. F&F Guns killed Mexican citizens by the truckload. These assholes are skating on it and still blaming Bush." Bush bears some of the blame since his administration started the gun walking program. Kind of an academic point, though, since Obama doubled down on this idiotic idea.

507 Jordan no doubt has gotten his F and F information from the same sources as his knowledge of voter ID.  Full of holes and misinformation colored by his pathetic liberal bias.

509 "Jordan no doubt has gotten his F and F information from the same sources as his knowledge of voter ID. Full of holes and misinformation colored by his pathetic liberal bias" My opposition to F&F comes from my libertarian bias. Since I believe in open borders, drug legalization and free access to firearms, F&F was triply misguided. I'm glad it's over.

510 It's going to be difficult for preezy admin to suppress the fact that diplomats in Libya requested more security and were rejected by the clueless DC flunkies. Even Jon Stewart noticed the culpability of preezy and Co...he did a five minute riff on the scandal last night.

Posted by: Jordan at October 02, 2012 03:22 PM (RSG1I) Bush did not START this program. Eric Holder says himself ON VIDEO to Congress that he 'is not trying to conflate the two'. So 'Bush' deserves none of the blame. Those programs are similar in that they involve: 1) Guns 2) ATF. That's where the similarities start and end. The fact that a legitimate law enforcement tactic was corrupted later by others does not lay blame at the feet of the people who came up with the legitimate tactic. Dumbass.

516 "This post is even dumber than the first. The Founders - you know, the ultimate 'libertarians' - still believed in secure borders. " I don't share their opinion on many things. It's also worth pointing out that the founding fathers are not monolithic. Considerable differences of opinion abounded then as now.

519 When you mix reasoned, intelligent, well-researched, historically-tested ideas with pure idiocy, you get pure idiocy.

I think the case is pretty proven here.

520 520 A libertarian that continuously blows the totalitarian Obama. Yeah right. What a pathetic lying shit stain. What I like about Obama is his comparatively permissive approach to civil liberties and the social issues surrounding them. He more closely reflects my views on most issues. Although I no longer have any connection to the LP (I worked for two LPUSA presidential campaigns.) I still consider myself a small l libertarian.

Civil liberties doesn't mean 'free food, cell phones, and rubbers'.

Posted by: blindside at October 02, 2012 11:55 AM (x7g7t)

523 Is there? Open borders as I understand the term are certainly not secure. The reason why I support open borders is because I believe the economic benefits of allowing goods and services to migrate freely outweigh the security risks.

When you say permissive, what you actually mean in Obama's case is that you like the sacrifice of the covenanted rights of the citizen to the imaginary rights of the invader. Piss on you and your small l.

525 His approach on civil liberties... You mean like 'killing American citizens via drone strikes without due process?' It's pretty shady, I agree. One of the kids he killed in Yemen went to a high school not far from me. There are plenty of foreign terrorists to drone. Obama should concentrate his efforts there.

526 "I believe the economic benefits of allowing goods and services to migrate freely outweigh the security risks."

So you are fine with the bombing of LAX and the radiological attack on LA? Stopped by nothing more than border security efforts? Are you fine with the Mexican cartels driving across the borders for their hits?

Thanks for playing.
