— Ace International Film and Television Star Nick Searcy from Justified now has his own WebZone, including "Acting School," in which he explains how you too could become an International Film and Television Star, or at least behave like one.
Part 1: The Importance of You, Your Relaxation, Your Nutrition, Your Needs, and Your Career.
Part 2: How to Avoid Your Family.
Incidentally: Showtime is currently (or was recently, at least) running a documentary called That Guy... Who Was In That Thing, consisting of interviews with character actors. Guys you totally, totally recognize from six thousand things (but you often can't say specifically what).
I thought it was extremely interesting and fun. Some things I didn't know: Nick Searcy talks about working 30-40 days per year in his Acting School clip. This is not much of an exaggeration. The average working actor actually does work about that much. He only works more when he lands a series or has a very productive spell as a guest star in tv shows and movies. They often work less.
One of the guys in this documentary, I think the guy who played "Bellick" in Prison Break, talked about how he tried to at least work just enough to qualify for unemployment insurance for the rest of the year. What's very surprising is that working actors, not the Major Motion Picture Stars but the rest of working actors, are actually... middle class, or even lower middle class. Most do not have expensive homes and often have cars 10 or 12 years old. They can't really spend a lot of money because their salaries are so extremely variable. They might make $15,000 for a five day shoot, but then might not work again for six or nine months. They really have absolutely no idea.
While the Major Motion Picture Stars often go on TV to talk about the "richest 1% profiting while the rest of the country loses ground," in fact that's exactly what they, the Major Motion Picture Stars, have done. The fee for the absolute top stars has gone up astronomically, but the fees for the other actors have plunged.
Whereas before, in say the 70s or 80s, you could get somewhat wealthy(ish) if you were a busy guest star actor, now they've cut the fees of everyone (except those at the tippy-top) so that even busy guest-star type actors you know are making about as much as, say, a teacher with 15 years on the job.
At least that's the sense I got -- unless these guys were bullshitting and pretending they had less money than they really did. But I don't think they were bullshitting. They had too many details. Paul Guilfoyle (the head detective on CSI) talked about how he would get the utility guys to skip reading his meter by telling them the meter was in the crawlspace under the house, and how there were "a lot of vermin down there." He noted that that word -- "vermin" -- was the most effective for deterring the utility guy.
It's just an interesting documentary.

The box in the hallway is the cliffhanger. You have to come back to find out if it contains alien artifacts, Michael Moore's toe cheese collection, or Hirohoto's Engrish book collection.
Off to Part II.

Speaking of celebrities- I once heard Kelly Clarkson interviewed about her thoughts on global warming. She said, "I don't know anything about global warming but...) and proceeded to blather on at some length about how horrible it was. The irony was totally lost on her.

Costco is a big cut rate bargain chain that runs Chinese goods into the US, probably through Long Beach.
There's a difference without a distinction.

As the proprietor here, you understand how important regular cash flow is. If you make $1 million in 12 years, but that includes a couple when you take in less than $20K, it can be hard to plan for regular bills like a car payment and rent.

Which is why casting director is a real job. Some people have the eye and imagination to see what might work with a particular actor while everyone else just sees the same roles for that actor forever. Better, some people know when an evil bastard is finally done gestating in nice guy roles and is ready to spring upon an unsuspecting world.
I recall that Gary Oldman got annoyed at the assumption that his character in The Contender was evil because 1) the character was a Republican, and 2) was played by Gary Oldman. There was a period when one could easily imagine a cast listing of "Hugh Beaumont, Barbara Billingsly, Tony Dow, and Gary Oldman as The Evil!"

I remember an indie producer said that he knew he would make his next movie in Canada after flying to his location with all his staff in coach while the SAG actor sat in first class (per union rules).
It's a good metaphor for union "wins" in general: the pay and perks of average members goes up, but the number of jobs goes down. Like the grocery clerks strike--they "won" an increase, and then the stores put in automated lines so each clerk could handle four lines instead of one.

Note that the number values used above are not based on real data, but the general theory behind them is correct.

As for working in H'wood, a couple ships ago one of my watch standers was a guy who used to work there as a scriptwriter and occasional actor. He did okay, most of the time, but had to go back to sea because of a very expensive divorce and he needed steady income. He said that he also had to do other jobs, like laying carpet, depending on how his work was at any given time.
It was interesting that he knew, personally, most of the big names in Hollywood although he did not mix with them socially. He was definitely a lower-middle tier guy.

I'm surmising that being a professional (read "broke') musician and an actor aren't vastly different gigs. You hope the phone rings for a music gig, and will take pretty much anything you think you can do.
The pay ain't great, but it is worth it to do something you love to do. There's also a great psychological side to it as well: no matter what happens during the week, it's all erased by a good gig, particularly with a bunch of close friends.

It's a full day of work and more. There's rehearsal, blocking, and then the live audience taping which can take up to 8 hours
Then the post production people have to shave that down to 22 minutes to allow for commercials. PP technicians make good money, but they put in 16 hour days during the season.

By the time they hit thirty they're no different from anyone else with an artistic bent. They get realistic about whether it is a hobby or a career or that become that perpetually semi-employed guy who never seems to order a proper meal when a bunch of you are at a restaurant.
A bunch of these people enjoy their anonymity. You'd never recognize them when they aren't made up and costumes for their typical role or put on the Voice that is the hallmark of the character they've honed into steady pay check until they get too old to be accepted in that role and have to find something else or worse, a real job.
My brother spent most of a year waiting tables in a Sambo's, back when it was still around, located around Calabasas, which made it a good stopping point for people going to and from the studios and several heavily used locations like the 20th Century Ranch that contained the MASH set, the Kung Fu temple, some Planet of the Apes sets, etc. (I went to school for two years nearby and we used to joke about being bussed to Korea because we could see the mountains used in the opening of MASH.)
He had a family that came in after church on Sundays quite regularly. Mom, Dad, and six kids. Very proper behavior was enforced for the kids but it seemed a happy bunch. After a while my brother realized why the guy seemed familiar. He was best known as the leader of the hapless biker gang in the two Clint Eastwood orangutan movies, among other evil sorts of character he'd made a living of playing.

That is what was formerly known as working in the United Kingdom.
A season, what we think of a normal run of twenty-something episodes, is not the rule there. Instead you have a series, referring to a set of 6 to 8 episodes rather than the whole multi-year run of a show. So you get actors doing a lot of different stuff in the same year, while in the US an actor might manage a lead role in a TV series and one movie lead in a year.

It can be interesting to look at a TV series with foreign financing. This would create incentive to play more to the overseas audience and have additional scenes to fill in the space from less commercials. A lot of shows might get by with clipping a few seconds here and there of 'character walking from car to front door of house' but others will have real content.
The trick is to write something that adds to the episode without breaking the story if it is deleted. The Highlander TV series had a lot of this. The scene would be completely extraneous to the story and usually just the characters having a conversation. Caual viewer would never miss it but fans would seek it out. Nowadays these scenes are treated as DVD extras in the US.

It's fun watching the movies that have been made in the local area down here and spotting where they were filmed, like shopping centers and watering holes. Larry the Cable Guy's Food Inspector was the high point.
I've also been in a few bands with guys who were extras in movies like Earnest Goes to Jail and Rosewood. I'm itching to pitch someone my idea for a reality show I lovingly call We're an American Band. We'd have a film crew follow us to gigs for the witty banter during set-up and breakdown, and with nubile young things fans who have never heard any of the classic rock music we play.
Since we get along so well in The Indfidels, the tension would have to be between us and bar managers who don't pick up my Guinness tab for the evening.

It goes beyond that. Chevy Chase is hated by a really wide audience in Hollywood, including the liberals. He pretty much destroyed his career by being hugely annoying after the box office draw he represented had faded badly. And he managed to do this before salaries above the line got really insane.
I'm sure he is embittered that later SNL alumni made more for single movies than he likely pulled down for his entire career. Worse, he start out as a writer and should have been able to transition back into that in his old age but appears to have long since misplaced those brain cells.
Apparently he was hard up for cash enough to do eight episodes guesting on a Swedish sitcom. Or it's some show within a show on 'Community.'

He was the shit back in the day. Getting famous made him arrogant and ruined him. If you look at his work before SNL made him really well known, there is a pretty respectable collection of stuff he wrote and performed. I still get a good laugh from National Lampoon Radio Show and spin-offs like Lemmings. If he had stayed a TV and supporting role guy he might have stayed sane.

Murray can improvise and Chase cannot. Being a writer makes chase a bit of a control freak. Most of that scene in Caddyshack was Bill Murray just rambling on auto-pilot and being as funny as anything Chase might have spent days tuning.
Ghostbusters is another good example of Murray making it up as he went along. A big portion of his lines were ad libs. On the DVD commentary Harold Ramis talks about how you have to leave gaps in a script when you're writing for Murray because anything else is a waste of time.

There were still some bright spots ahead after Caddyshack. Like 'Fletch.'
The biggest factor was whether he got to own the scene or not. In Three Amigos that was never going to happen because he was working with two guys who were his equals at the very least.
Look at some of the successful movies like Vacation. Every time another strong comic is in the scene Chase fades to a secondary role. Which was kind of sad in Spies Like Us, as Dan Ackroyd is far better in supporting roles when he cannot do something wild like Bass-o-matic or Julia Child.

DCB I am ashamed of you after all the discussion on this fine stuff:
The definition of bourbon
On
May 4, 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a
“distinctive product of the United States.” The Federal Standards of
Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 C.F.R. 5.22) state that bourbon must
meet these requirements:
* Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn (maize).
* Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume).
* Neither coloring nor flavoring may be added.
* Bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels.
* Bourbon must be entered into the barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume).
* Bourbon, like other whiskeys, may be bottled at not less than 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume.)
* Bourbon that meets
the above requirements and has been aged for a minimum of two years may
(but is not required to) be called Straight Bourbon.
* Straight Bourbon aged for a period less than four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging.
* If an age is stated on the label, it must be the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle.
And other things I have seen actually limit to a very few counties in KY.

But lo and behold, the battery was dead. (imagine little cloud over head because I had recently charged it).
After one triple <whiskey> I had a brilliant idea, go get my old ancient plug in drill and either move the barrel from lot 100 feet away or stretch cord.
But alas, I forgotten my old methodology for storing old shit. Throw in shed and depend on Mercedes Lackey's brownies to clean it out and straiten it up despite the building being full of cold iron.

Just a thought to throw out there : So many actors end up not attempting to break into Hollywood or Broadway due to several obstacles. The extreme high cost of surviving in New York or LA for most is beyond their capability without some sort of funding. For conservative actors, the climate is more a less jumping into an open sewer, and the constant encounters with industry sexual predators is terrifying for a young actor on their own. Just as in the universities, to survive professionally, young actors must either remain silent and appear shallow, or lie to disguise any political and social beliefs right of center(and center at times). Most of them are either assimulated into the left-wing culture and become another drone, or the constant abuse and pressure to abandon their ethical standards wears them down, and they leave.
To initiate a competitive entertainment industry, one place to start is building the careers of selected young actors by funding their living costs during their initial entry into the industry. Perhaps provide some sort of low- cost living situations. People living in these areas could even provide a room and board. (Also providing an immediate support group in the big city). Removing the pressure of living expenses removes the ability of the industry to use that necessity as a means to pressure young actors into falling in the left-wing line just to survive. Certainly, this move would be a baby step. The biggest problem to solve in finding the financial and technological resources to make movies. Technology innovations are changing many of the old obstacles. You mentioned the avenues opening for small, independent films, and that would be another place to start, followed by building a strategy to convince theatre chains to feature such films. The audience is there waiting for good entertainment.
The more I think about this goal, the more I'm beginning to believe it could be done. Not in the next five years mind you. But wth patience, perseverance and a long-term strategy, not so impossible as most assume.

It's a trap!
The proposal, as poured into the sausage grinder, is one of those "regionalism" pipe-dreams, where the existing city's programs are debts are hung around the necks of the surrounding so-called suburbs. Most of those towns were free-standing mill and factory towns on their own before the cancerous expansions (of the go-go, overly materialistic, selfish Fifties! You should be ashamed!), and are now filled with those guilty of, well, leaving Detroit.
The center cities of these monstrosities retain enough easily-directed votes to keep the free-shit taps flowing, and the captive cities retain their property tax valuation just long enough -- because revaluations only happen on the government's schedule -- for the current guilty parties to finish out their terms and feather their nests. Needless to say, regionalism is a regular platform plank for the Democrat party.
For the state to decommission the city, they'd have to either officially absorb its existing liabilities, or officially hang them on Westland, Inkster, Ferndale and GPW. You might hear about that on the national news. It would, in the words of the Strategic Bombing Report, further convulse the rubble.

It would be quicker to mod a box of standard ammo like that than it would be to hunt around for some esoteric black market AP shit, and then pay through the nose for it.
Fucking tards. Anyone can fab AP ammo from shit they got laying around in their garage.

Haven't shot one either but have Texas relatives that have. The carapace forms to shield the hogs from the tusks of other hogs. It gets amazingly tough on older hogs they say. Feral hogs go right through barbed wire fences.

And we are surprised when every time we think we have some level of surcease from their insanity, they have another lawsuit ready to go!

Rather than drill holes in the barrel, which quickly become clogged with ashes, I cut both ends out of the barrel, and then weld three scrap brake shoes onto the bottom to serve as feet. Works great. I also used a heavy grade barrel if I can get one; they last much longer.
Setting the open-ended barrel on three bricks also works, but having welded-on feet makes it easier to tip the barrel for cleanout.

I've always been partial to the use of bricks and having both ends open. Easy to maintain and easy to clean for me at least.

While you don't NEED armor-piercing rounds for a hog, you do need power for the big boys. Do a search: feral hogs, photos. They can reach very impressive sizes.
The damage they do to fields is impressive too, but not in a good way.

If you eat a hog that's eaten a human...does that make you a cannibal?
I used to wonder this, when watching 'Deadwood'.

Both taste like pork.
Errr, so I've been told...

I love Nick Searcy.
He enriches every production that he is in.
Just felt the need to say that, since I was late to the thread.
And Ace...I watched that documentary 'That Guy...' last month.
It was good.
The unspoken thing, was how the Unions in the Film Industry have screwed themselves and their members...like with other other unions in other industries.

I went to the Maker's Mark distillery in Loretto, KY once. It was like a pilgrimage.
Some Bourbon distillers ship their used barrels to Scotland. Laphroig is aged in used MM barrels.
