— Open Blogger Hi there, Morons and Moronettes. tmi3rd here again, and relatively little change in the forecast track so far, but the timeline is beginning to firm up. For the above-the-fold discussion, if you're anywhere from DC to Boston, you need to be finishing up your preparations for a strong tropical storm to Category 1 hurricane hit. You need to also expect extremely high tides and for the possibility that this storm may linger for a bit.
As you can see from the map, Sandy is emerging from the Bahamas, with maximum sustained winds still at 75 mph (hurricane strength) and gusts to 90 mph. Movement is currently to the north at 6 mph, and minimum pressure is still a robust 969 mb. The current forecast track takes it south of where it was anticipated to hit at this time yesterday- yesterday, the thinking was that the center of circulation would go ashore around the New York City area, and now they're thinking Delaware Bay. That will probably change again, so just allow for a wide swath.
That doesn't let anyone off the hook, though. If you're on the northern side of the storm, you'll have those winds blowing water in towards the shore as the storm comes ashore. The other thing is, the storm is pretty asymmetric right now. Here's a satellite shot of it...

The center of circulation is that little notch just north of the Bahamas, and it's very exposed to the south. It's beginning to take on some hybrid characteristics, which is just to say that it's beginning to lose some of the warm core-characteristics that make tropical cyclones tropical cyclones. It's sucking up some cooler frontal air, and it'll encounter a pair of weather features that will move it first to the northeast (in which time it will weaken slightly), and then make it take a hard left turn on Monday evening. It is anticipated to have re-strengthened by that time.
Now, glance back up at the satellite shot. This is a BIG storm, and if you're anywhere from North Carolina to probably southern Maine, you're going to feel some effects from the storm. Also, if you look at the forecast map, it's anticipated that Sandy will slow way down over central Pennsylvania and New York, and that will be where the real threat to life and property comes in- inland flooding.
Plan for substantial power outages in that area, and it may take several days to get power back. If you haven't already, you'll want to charge up all your electronics, and all of us who were in the neighborhood for Katrina have a new-found appreciation for generators. Gas up the cars now, and you'll want a few days' worth of non-perishable food and medication.
If you're on the coast- should the order be given to evacuate, don't screw around. Slow movers are the worst- the winds stay up, the water keeps coming in, and the rain just hangs out forever.
There has been some discussion of some winter weather on the trailing end of the system- it's too early to say what we're talking about there, but just plan for a big mess. The leading edge of the storm will likely just be rain.
So, to reiterate- DC to Cape Cod, be finishing up your preparations for a big, persistent storm. If you need to get a hold of me with questions, I'm on Twitter at @tmi3rd, and as many will tell you, I'm approachable and friendly, and there are no dumb questions.
Everyone stay safe!

I've neer seen a track with this sharp a turn. I can't find any place describing WHY it's going to turn like that.
It's been my experience of 40 years living on the East coast from Florida to New Hampshire that they will just continue up the coast or turn east.
If they turn inland, they do it further south of or at south/north carolina.
Storms don't like land. They will rapidly slow down and spread out over land. So they're tracking the system and not the 'cane?

It is a low pressure system coming from the west that is going to suck the storm in. Look at map, see line of storms in Ohio valley? They are going to bring Sandy in.

You have to input a location but theirs a widget lets you click on it and then click on the area you want to see tracks for so you don't have to write in the location.
click the widget (you get a big black dot for a cursor) then click in the map. I clicked philly and up came dozens of tracks. Only one make a kind of left into PA and then into NY.
Lots of tracks showing 'canes hugging the coast or over the coast all the way to boston. (little rhoadie really bite it a lot)
That's the tracks I'm familiar with and I don't see or hear any reason to think differently now.
Still it's gonna affect inland because of the winds and rain. It's just not gonna take a left at camden and head to harrisburg.

In VA the number of people who vote early is limited because you have to apply for an absentee ballot first and satisfy one of the state's permitted excuses (out of town, law enforcement, etc). The ballot comes in the mail but you can also vote in person. MD, on the other hand, has early voting for anyone who wants to show up. That starts this Sunday and ends on Thursday, but I'm betting that will be extended.

A 'cane is the biggest (or lowest) of a low pressure system I find it difficult to believe that it will "suck the storm in." Maybe suck the low system in but the major reason I can see may be that eastern High pressure. That makes sense BUT it could just as well go almost straight up the coast.
Okay, now I see what they're talking about. It's like a opening to the west and north and it's blocked to the east so it's got nowhere else to go.

I'm hoping that High moves east and lets this thing go out to sea.
Last time we had a big storm, even though I'm at the top of a hill and all, the rain came down so hard and I'm on clay, my crawlspace flooded.
That's not an easy trick to accomplish.
I'm better prepared now though as I dug some guiding trenches and have a sump pump to pump out any inflow.

Make sure you have a very tight stopper but the bathtub is very convenient to the toilet. In emergency can also be drank.
Hot water heaters also have water in them so if power goes out shut off inlet and outlet for water heater. Drain water out by drain spigot at bottom. They're threaded like a hose bib so you can hook up any hose to drain.
That water's may not be good to drink depending on temperature and how much sulfur is in your water.
Milk jugs. Save them for recycling and always keep some clean on hand. fill up quick before power out.
toilet paper. Every body forgets toilet paper.
3 things you learn to cherish as you get old:
soft lavatory paper, a warm place to shit and good dentistry.
(the dentistry won't help during a 'cane though)

I am in northern VA. Filled up the food stores today. Plenty of water and gasoline for the generator. Tomorrow I may pre-cut some 3/4" plywood for a few of the windows ... just in case. May need to top up on the valu-rite though. The basic lesson around here is ... buy your emergency supplies while there is NOT an actual emergency. It is impossible to get a generator at the moment and the batteries and laterns section of stores are getting bare. A well planned emergency kit beforehand is REALLY useful. I have everything I need to keep the family safe and comfortable but if you did not plan ahead ... well, looks like you will sit in the dark for a while.

In SW Virginia, we raided the stores for generators back this summer. This time of year, a 800 watt generator from Harbor Freight will get your internet, computer and tv working. That is all I would need this time of year, but this summer in 100+ temps, a 5000 watt generator would have been awesome.

Deviating from the plot curve; teaching turning points.
http://tinyurl.com/8t7n6fl
Syd Field, author of Screenplay and The Screen Writer's Workbook, breaks up the acts into a different paradigm. He calls Act I Set Up, Act II Confrontation and Act III Resolution. Each of these plot points thrusts the action in a new direction. Men with more wisdom than me (sic) have analyzed and put their own spin on the three-act structure, and the one that I like best is from Michael Hauge, author of Writing Screenplays that Sell. Hauge's "Screenplay Structure: The Five Key Turning Points to All Successful Scripts" breaks the three acts up into six stages...
Act II and Stage IV end in the next Turning Point 4, at the 75 percent mark, which is Major Setback. Here the hero is failing to meet his goals and things start to look hopeless. This may also be what is called the "black moment" when everything appears to be lost.
Now the hero enters Stage V, which is Final Push. Here the hero picks himself up, finds that reserve strength and keeps pushing until the end, which he finds at Turning Point 5. This where the climax of the story occurs and it can appear anywhere around the 90 percent mark to almost the end. The climax is the biggest moment the hero faces, the big moment of triumph or failure. The outer motivation is resolved.
After Turning Point 5 comes the very brief Stage VI, which is called The Aftermath. Here the story winds up and finishes.

Obama Fiddled While Benghazi Burned–
Earlier today Barack Obama told DenverÂ’s WUSA TV this in regard to the Benghazi 9-11 terror attack,
“I gave three very clear directives. Number one, make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to. Number two, we’re going to investigate exactly what happened to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Number three, find out who did this so we can bring them to justice.”
Tonight however, Bing West, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense, told Greta Van Susteren,
“If that actually happened the way President Obama said it happened, there’s a paper trail and I think people reasonably enough can say, “Can we see the order?” because hundreds of others supposedly saw this order.
Obama just got caught. He lied about his securing our personnel in Benghazi. And now the world will know about it.
There was no order to protect our men on the ground.

And plywood. Lots and lots of plywood.

I should probably also stock up on batteries that don't actually fit anything I own. You know, just to be safe!

If Romney wins we have a small chance of learning whodunit, but I expect the "cooler" heads in the RINO party to ask us to move along and pretty much let this pass. The DC establishment can be expected to circle the wagons and unless some very senior people are exposed as witting and culpable and turn on each other it will come to naught (McCain's bluster notwithstanding)! I really hope I am wrong on this, since every time I hear a little bit more about the sequence of events I get angrier and angrier about this.

Well, we knew he was a squish (Gov of MA--give me a break), but he was the closest thing to a "candidate" we were allowed to have.
Interesting to me that he might have been the only politician that would be immune to the Obama/Chicago smear machine; however, just because you lead a good life doesn't mean you will make tough Constitutional choices as President.

But the world still overwhelmingly loves him, according to some poll that was on the ONT the other night. He is still their Nobel Prize-winning, light-bringing citizen of the world. He will get his customary pass.
...
No. The world does not still overwhelmingly love Obama. If they did, the Benghazi massacre would not have occurred. The only "world" that still overwhelmingly loves Obama is his world. Not reality.
The EU awarded itself the Nobel Peace Prize, co-opting any significance previously attributed to Obama for simply "being there". Barry is no Chance. http://tinyurl.com/6sd6cup
European NATO Members have disengaged from their NATO responsibilities, placing all war activity onto the US to bear. And though the EU and Obama may share the same ideology with the UN, no one loves a loser. Obama's been caught with his pants down once too often even for the French or Italians. Shit for brains just doesn't cut it in the dog eat dog world at war.

No it is simple. Immediately after repeating the oath of office, President Romney should formally announce that all]/u] Executive Orders signed by Obama are null and void in their entirety. Then his staff can work through them on a case by case basis and decide what needs to be retained (if anything). Remember that Democrat social justice lawyers wrote those EOs so they each have administrative and regulatory tentacles that spread far and wide and cannot be deconstructed piece by piece. They just need to be ended in toto.

What's with all the concern this morning?
Romney isn't Osama Obama. Just keep repeating that to yourself: "Romney isn't Osama Obama."
To me, that is the only qualification Teh Mutt needs to become president. I'm a realist: he'll do things that piss me off. Even if he wipes out all of Choom Boy's XOs, puts everyone in the current regime in jail and brings the economy back to life, he'll do things that piss me off.
But that's fine. Get President Historic First© the hell out of office, and the rest is trivia.

like a whole lot in comparison to big hurricanes but in this area a lot
of damage can be done in a hurry primarily due to large trees coming down.
Yep. This is my concern. After the Halloween snowstorm, we had four oaks cut down. I'm looking at this storm as ROI (sort of).
Perhaps the derecho down your way thinned out some of the potential problems.

Hence, an Executive Order to delete specified previous Executive Orders is as constitutionally legitimate as any other EO.

The power companies started aggressive tree-trimming after that, but the vast majority of power lines around here are above-ground and some areas need infrastructure upgrades. PEPCO is a curse word for many in this region.

Power Companies get cursed for trimming trees and they get cursed for not trimming trees when the power goes out. Mostly they just get cursed.
When hurricane Hugo came through here it took
several months before power was restored to all.

I wish they'd done the same in my area.....they didn't. Part of cutting down on expenses meant cutting back on preventative maintenance like tree trimming, and pole replacement. Power outages in this area are more frequent, and tend to last longer now.
With the whole NE scheduled to be smacked around like Sandra Fluke at a frat house party with a limitless supply of condoms, power outages could last for a long time. Al Gore will be along shortly to blame it all on Global Worming.

Bottled water---a lot. You will use later if not needed. Fill bathtub for water to flush toilet and wash hands. Gatorade. Prescription meds. OTC meds for diarrhea, etc. Advil. Plastic garbage bags.Non-perishable foods. Uncle Ben's and others make cooked rice packets for boiling water. Look for Mountain House freeze dried food for campers in Walmart or wherever it is sold. First aid kit. Make a bug out kit from all of these supplies and have them near your important papers and treasures in the event you have to leave in a hurry. As someone said, gas in car. If you have a generator, make sure it works. Charcoal or gas grill for cooking what is in freezer if power goes out.
Candles. Matches. Battery lanterns. Batteries. Camp stove if you don't have a grill...something to boil water.
BAGS OF ICE. Trust me, this is gold after a hurricane. Put bags of ice in your large freezer if you have one. Will keep frozen food colder longer and can be used for drinks. Or, if you don't have a large freezer, put in a cooler. I used to read to freeze water bottles for later use, but some plastic bottles split when frozen.
