Hurricane Sandy 10/28 update (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Good evening yet again, Morons and Moronettes, and hello from the tmi3rds at the AoSHQ Weather Desk. Let's get the headlines out of the way now:

1) If you're anywhere north of the North Carolina border east of the Appalachians, you need to be ready for one of the bigger rain events you've seen.

2) If you're along the coast or near any waterways, you need to be ready for the probability of serious flooding.

3) Any coastal hurricane preparation needs to be rushed to completion at this point.
4) This storm's going to linger, and that's where the problem is.

More below the fold... Sandy.gif
So, as of the 11 PM EDT advisory, Sandy has sustained winds of 75 mph, with gusts to 90 mph. Movement is currently northeast at 12 mph, and the lowest pressure measured is 960 millibars. This is a powerful storm.

As Sandy sucks up the cold front and winter storm, it will stop being a true hurricane (by scientific definitions), but it then is no longer dependent upon warm water to maintain itself. It'll strengthen through what are called baroclinic processes- easiest way to describe that is that it's like a figure skater pulling her arms in in a spin. As the storm tightens up, it'll spin quicker, and the winds will increase.

The current path (which, as you'll note, continues to fluctuate) takes the center of circulation ashore somewhere around Delaware Bay or southern New Jersey, but the business side of the storm is the northeast side. So, if you're basically anywhere along the coast from Philadelphia or Wilmington north through Cape Cod, please just stay the hell away from waterways. If you're in low-lying areas, get anything you care about off the ground. Finally, if the locals tell you to get out, do it. Here's why...

You'll notice that the forecast track takes it over central PA, up through central NY, and then leaves via Montreal and the St. Lawrence River. It's going to slow way down when it gets on shore, and 20" of rain is an entirely realistic estimate. Assume before it gets to you that you'll be looking at some water in the house.

Not having lived up there, I don't know how the power crews are, but you'll want to figure you may be without power for several days. If you're in the higher elevations in the mountains, that cold core coming down from the north may make a serious snow event out of it as well. It'll just be rain to the east of the mountains, but the thing I want to emphasize is that you're likely to have some loss of services for a few days. Please don't get caught unprepared.

Other than that, there's not much else to tell... since this sucker's so big, you'll start seeing serious coastal effects tomorrow, Monday evening will be when it makes landfall, and we'll be thinking about coastal and inland flooding the whole way. Again, high water is your big threat.

As ever, guys, if you need to get a hold of me, the best way is through Twitter at @tmi3rd. I won't be able to give you much information in terms of hydrology (waterways and such), but whatever I can do, I'm delighted to try.

Everyone stay safe, and we'll catch you on the flip side of this. I'll have another update for you tomorrow night.

-tmi3rd

How much does  'Obama the kind, sympathetic aid-promiser come into play when areas are hit terribly.  He's going  to soak all of this  up.   I say  if there's  a big amount of  damage,  the Romney campaign goes down there and helps  rescue puppies   and   such.

82 We're on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Husband had to make a run upstate today. Said power company trucks were heading north en masse. Just like a bad gulf hurricane, only in reverse. They will stage inland and be ready to move in as soon as is reasonably safe. Sometimes that's the better part of a week in a densely populated area, and more for rural areas. Be prepared. This storm is alarming to me, and I'm a non-evacuating hurricane veteran. Some things that are routinely mentioned and some that are not: If you take prescription medication, stock up now. Often pharmacies here can do an extension on a soon-to-outdate med in a state of emergency, but you may have to do this ahead of time. Don't underestimate water needs. Get more bottled than you think you need, and also fill tubs, stockpots, etc. it's easier to deal with no electricity than no water. Cook whatever you can out of your freezer now. Don't try to use iffy food two or three days in. A good five-day cooler or two is worth the 35 bucks, but don't try to keep frozen foods in it for long. Get charcoal or gas for your grill. And plenty of it. If your grill is connected to your house's gas line, don't rely on that. Don't forget extra pet food. A roll of Visqueen or similar is worth its weight in gold if you need it. Bring it in the house with you, plus something to secure it with against the ceiling/windows. If there is any chance of coastal flooding where you are, DO NOT leave your ax in the garage or shed. If you have to retreat to the attic, you may well need to get out before help knows you're there. If the power goes out, turn off your heating/air system. Also computers, tvs, etc. The surge when they come back on often fries these things. If you have a generator, turn it off when power crews are working in your neighborhood. From what I understand extra power from generators can leak back into the lines even if the city's power is down. Don't want to electrocute the people trying to help you. Be safe!

103 #19 How much does 'Obama the kind, sympathetic aid-promiser come into play when areas are hit terribly. He's going to soak all of this up. Two things - first, these are blue states where there is a high % of people who will sit on their asses and expect the gubmint to cater to their every whim, right now. Second, the gubmint is generally incompetent and won't be able to deliver better than Bush did for Katerina - fastest FEMA response ever and fat lot of good it did him. So they'll blame a convenient scapegoat, hopefully TFG. I'd be happy to ride out a week w/o power if it pushed another state or two to Romney. Small price to pay. But then, I have a 7.5kva generator, cars with full gas tanks and three jerry cans full to boot. The only thing I need to get is a couple of cheap electric heating plates. Microwave ovens and dirty generator power don't agree with one another.

105 Hurricanes can kill more people from fresh water flooding and landslides than they do from the storm surge on the coast.  I live maybe 450 miles from the coast and I've had several hurricanes hit me with hours of rain falling at rates in excess of an inch an hour. The little rivulet in front of my house that's normally 2 feet wide and 2 inches deep becomes 8 feet wide, five feet deep and moves incredibly fast.  The stream across the road that is usually 10 feet wide and 8 to 12 inches deep can take out small bridges, stranding our entire rural community for days.

That most of the leaves are now off the trees is a good thing. When trees are in full leaf and the ground is saturated it doesn't take that much wind to topple large trees.  That will help minimize power outages.

I learned a long time ago to keep a weeks worth of drinking water and plenty of canned food that doesn't need to be heated much beyond lukewarm to be palatable.

Poor guy doesn't even have a full room of his own, just a goodly section of the exposed "dining area" twixt kitchen and living room, where now his Mighty Wurlitzer of a computer desk setup is. And we had to get rid of the dining table and chairs to liberate even that amount of space.

But her swears up and down and sideways that with that, and with free reign of the kitchen to organize as he pleases, he's happier than he's ever been in a place.  And I can't seem to quit being acquisitive myself, so I'll selfishly take him at his word.

188 I remember hearing stories of a N'oreaster in the 1950's or 1960's March 1962. A northeaster -- not even a hurricane -- cut right through the island in a couple of spots. Some good pics here... http://www.lbiviews.com/about/history/march-1962-storm.html

189  I remember hearing stories of a N'oreaster in the 1950's or 1960's that caused the two to meet over the island.   It'll all depend on where the eye comes ashore, anything north of that is in for a world of hurt.  When Ivan hit here Pensacola was to the East and got hammered by onshore winds and waves while Mobile was to the West and the off shore winds forced all the water out of the North end of Mobile Bay.  The I10 Bayway was suddenly a viaduct, not a bridge.

False, look at the projected track = winds will be down but rain will be the problem.  Everybody remembers what Camille did to the Mississippe coast in '69 but that lady killed more people in West Virginia due to heavy flooding than died on the coast.

@183 Yeah, the center of Sandy looks to make landfall (according to WU this morning) right near Stafford Township, or about midway between Forked River and Little Egg Harbor.  So Toms River and Brick and places like Freehold and Jackson are lined up to be just north of the storm's center ... i.e., where the strongest winds are going to be.

My little burg here in central NJ got clobbered by Irene last summer, power out and drinking water contaminated for several days after the storm hit, downtown flooded out, businesses gone, etc etc.  We're also in the crosshairs this time around.  Spent some time yesterday sandbagging the downtown area to try to prevent a repeat.

Not much rain here yet, but winds are already picking up this morning.

The dems are busy making plans to create voting havoc due to the storm.  There will be chaos, and the dems will use it to cheat every way they can.   Watch for them to start laying the ground work for this on today's talk shows.  I look for them to try to extend voting for the whole month of November, or until they can generate the votes needed to keep their Indonesian jesus in our White House.    I hate these s.o.b.s  with the intensity of 1000 burning SMODs!     I hope the right is preparing for this.

203 So as the oncoming storm floods out I-95 from Trenton all the way from Trenton to Wilmington DE, it's comforting to know that Joe Biden has kept Amtrak's Corridor rails alive all these decades as a key part of our national defense infrastructure. Supplies, troops and refugees can move freely on this alternative route, except where Delaware River flooding swamps the riverside track from Trenton NJ to Bristol PA, and where Schuylkill River flooding closes the segment from North Philly to Wilmington DE.

I'm safe on high ground at 44th Street, so everyone on the Drexel and Penn campuses will drown before me. I'm guessing Philly's subways will flood out before noon on Monday.

204 Every time I hear Hurricane Sandy, I get this picture of Olivia Newton John in skin-tight pants and a black leather jacket, as John Travolta leers and drools and is generally stupefied by her bad-girl power.

He's a much better actor than people give him credit for.

205 "1) If you're anywhere north of the North Carolina border east of the Appalachians, you need to be ready for one of the bigger rain events you've seen."

Change that to east of I-95. Here in Raleigh the rain hasn't even gotten close.

Oh, BTW, not to be a "Hurricane Truther", but the nearest buoy to Sandy has sustained winds of 40knots, with gusts in the 50's. It'll be interesting to see what the real wind fields are as it gets closer to land. Is this another Irene, which was not a hurricane when it hit the Outer Banks and New Jersey?

206 Good morning.  I'm in Wilmington, North Carolina.  There was a lot of rain yesterday, pretty steady but not what I would call "heavy."  Today there's no rain at all.  Just FYI.
