Hurricane Sandy 10/29 update (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Good evening yet again, Morons and Moronettes, and we maintain our vigil on Hurricane Sandy from the AoSHQ Weather Desk.

If you're in Virginia, Maryland, or North Carolina, obviously, you're already getting tropical storm conditions. If you're in eastern Pennsylvania, any part of New Jersey, or anywhere from southeastern New York to the eastern shores of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, you're on deck for hurricane conditions.

More below the fold... Sandy.gif

To my surprise, Sandy is sticking to what the NHC forecast indicated... as such, confidence is high that the center of Sandy will come ashore somewhere between Delaware Bay and Atlantic City around 2 AM on Monday. This will put the business end of the storm into such areas as Philadelphia, New York City, Wilmington, Boston... you get the idea.

Sandy is currently headed northeast at 13 mph, and maximum sustained winds remain 75 mph with gusts to 90 mph. The minimum internal pressure is a very impressive 950 millibars.

Rather than breaking down each individual state's threat, here is a list of state-by-state impact forecasts. What I'd like to impress upon you is please, for the love of God, do not go near high water. I know that seems utterly obvious, but I'm anticipating that nobody is insane enough to go stand on the coast during this storm.

Obviously, if you hear the call to evacuate from your locals, heed it. Because it's going to hang out longer than Irene did, this is likely to be a bigger deal than Irene was. We had the same thing happen with Isaac in New Orleans- it wasn't a big deal until the storm slowed down, and then stuff started breaking.

A question was asked earlier of me this evening on Twitter about calculating storm surge- it's calculated by taking the tide height at the moment and then adding the surge on top of it. The bottom line is that if you're on the north side of the storm, you're looking at a baseline of four feet of extra water, and it'll vary from there, depending on where you are. Consult the above link for details.

Other than that, guys, there's not really that much more to add prior to landfall. What I do want to turn to now is the inland effects- if you're in upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, you still want to be prepared for some serious rain simply because of how Sandy will slow down on its way through.

Finally, we're getting some snowfall forecasts for the back side of the storm (this is the joy of these hybrid storms forming up; they're a headache)... the mountains of WV are looking at 2-3 feet, SW VA and eastern KY are looking at 1-2 feet, and the mountains of NC, TN, and MD are looking at 12-18 inches.

To close, I unintentionally annoyed LauraW this evening about being careful around high water... the thing is, guys, I covered way too many stories of people who were being careful but got a little too close to high water. The amount of water in this storm is going to be impressive, and I want there to be as many Morons around after the storm as there were before the storm.

So, please pardon my concern- in the meantime, please charge up your batteries, guard your Val-U-Rite, and enjoy the big show that you're about to get... these storms don't come along very often.

Okay, that's it from the weather desk! If you need me, drop me a note on Twitter at @tmi3rd, and I'll be around. Everyone stay safe!

6 There's a stalled front over central PA runing north-south. The energy from Sandy will be sucked into the trough from that front. That's my understanding anyway.

11 Y'all.....these things scare the shit out of me and I'm right in its path. I live in a big but cheaply built house and I'm actually a little scared that it's gonna blow down. Not too worried about power outages, that will be a pain in the ass but survivable. Prolly get the rest of the week off from work too since the eye of this storm looks like it's going right over my office. I just asked Rockdad if we have any tarps and he said we have one. If we lose any of our roof before this thing is over we're pretty well f---ed.

Delaware:  Tolls on Delaware Rt. 1 have been waived until further notice.  Essential traffic ONLY on all Delaware roads after 5AM Monday until further notice.

Maryland:  The US 50 bridge into Ocean City is now CLOSED to all traffic.  Rt. 90 is your recommended evacuation route from Ocean City. The Governor has also waived all restrictions on prescription refills.  If you evacuate and have forgotten/lost medications, you may obtain a refill of up to a 30 day supply regardless of when your prescription was last filled.

25 I'm in Wilmington, NC, and will be for a while because of a busted car.  G-d damn it.

There was a lot of rain yesterday, not what I would call "heavy" but definitely persistent.

Today, no rain.  It's a bit cold, but not unseasonally so.

That's all I've seen of Sandy.

26 I have family in the NoVa burbs that I'm trying to convince to cancel all Monday appts. They are still determined to work half a day, have a doctor's appt, etc. Right now the forecasts are that the 50 mph winds won't start until noon, so they are planning on running errands and working until then. My arguments is, hey, that's retarded. What if something goes wrong. You get a flat, or have car trouble, or -- who knows. Getting stuck at work, or the doctor's, or on the highway when the really bad shit starts is life-endangering. So why risk it? So far I'm not winning the argument. I'll get one more set of calls in the morning to convince them to stay inside.

Even if you have tarps, trying to put them up in a major storm is a serious risk to your life and limb. Ever seen how a tarp behaves in 70+ MPH winds? You can get thrown a considerable distance. Or get whipped by tiedown lines.

My own instinct is to rush to the site of trouble, but sometimes you have to just batten down the hatches and deal with the damage later.

37 #34  we have had late season hurricanes, even into November, before.

Posted by: crosspatch at October 28, 2012 07:56 PM (ZbLJZ)

38 Christie and others are bet-hedging...This is a reflexive response to Katrina politics during election season: "One of the meteorologists on staff even provided his contact information, urging those who think the storm is “overhyped” to call and yell at him on Friday if it ends up not being as bad as they think. But, he said, even as they yell at him, he’ll be happy they are safe." "That echoes the sentiment here in the Eyewitness Weather Center – we are hoping against hope that this storm doesn’t perform as intensely as expected, and we are not trying to scare anyone, but we would much rather our viewers be over-prepared than under-prepared for what has the potential to be an unprecedented storm for this part of the country."

It runs it to a wall of a big high pressure system so it had to turn to go around behind it when the high pressure system moves off to Europe. I thought it was odd to have such a sharp turn but as it is so late in the year the jet stream brought the high down.

66 I'm about 10 miles north of Philly, and had light rain a few hours ago, with occasional breezes. Right now it's very quiet. I took my flagpole down. I doubt it would break off, but I don't want the thing coming through a window. Better safe than sorry. I had my roof replaced back in 2005, and chose the top-of-the-line shingles. Reading the fine print, it said they are supposed to be good for winds up to 110 mph if installed with six nails. I paid extra and had it done. A couple of years ago I had some windows replaced, and opted for the impact-resistant glass used in hurricane-prone areas. I was mainly concerned about preventing break-ins, though. So I guess we will see.

It's not the wind and the storm itself, but the rain and the storm surge that will cause some epic flooding.  If the folks on the ground aren't ready for it, they will get drowned caught in a flood plain that was never a flood plain before.

The old and stubborn hardest hit.

89 TMI3rd, lots of eeyoring going on as people scream BS such as...

I've surfed a Cat 1

I've taken bigger pisses than a Cat 1

etc....

Clearly, few people have taken the time to read why this system and its eventual interaction with the Winter storm, are so special.

And, it seems that even without these special circumstances, a certain Cat 1 can create tremendous devastation when the next does not.

Is the Cat system, alone, really covering it? It seems that basing the designation solely upon wind speed and not the impacts of water don't cover the entire picture.

A thought just occurred to me about something I saw in Ohio this weekend.  There were a couple of convoys of cherry picker- power line service trucks moving through town (Columbus, OH) this weekend.  They are heading east to the coast and getting positioned to repair downed lines, etc.

It's going to be a mess because so many people live in the path of the storm.

60 million??

And I hope that's all it is, a mess and no death and tragedies.

That's what I've been thinking. There are so many variables, for example a storm that speeds through vs. one that sits and pours rain over the same area for hour after hour. Then there was Irene last year, which got a lot of media hype because it threatened the Northeast. It weakened before landfall, and turned out not to be as bad as feared. Some people called it a fizzle. But then it hit Vermont as "only" a tropical storm, and caused catastrophic flooding. So yes, I think the category system can cause some people to become complacent.

I'm confused. If they already use ACE, for individual storms, does that mean the Cat is representative of the ACE or is the ACE only determined after-the-fact? I see there is also a HDP scale.

126 Hey guys- I'm off to bed here, but a couple of quick answers from above... 1) The Saffir-Simpson category scale- it doesn't really take destructive potential into account. It's purely raw wind speed, but as you noted, if it hangs out for any length of time without winding down, it makes a hell of a mess. 2) Tornadoes, typically generated in the northeastern quadrant of the storm, are a function of the shear between bands and also from good old-fashioned friction between the system and the ground (as I understand it). It's highest in that quadrant, for reasons that my calculus-fu isn't strong enough to understand. 3) This pressure is way low for a Category 1 hurricane, but it's no longer a hurricane in the truest form- it's an extratropical cyclone. What that means is that you trade off the ridiculously high winds in the center for a broader wind field, but a more uniform wind field. It means you'll get those 75 mph winds much further out than you would with your typical hurricane. Anyway, as ever, folks, thanks for the read... this will go by in a couple of days, so just stay safe. I'll be available on Twitter all day tomorrow if you need to find me.

136 something to keep in mind, since we just went through this last year, all the more vulnerable trees have been removed. Unlike a usual pattern where the same area doesn't get hit quite as much for a few years giving time for the trees to grow and age to set in.

So far their predictions of wind speed inland have been high by a factor of 2x.

Also it hasn't made it's hook yet and it's already missed one way point on the prediction path.

147 There was a hurricane Irene in FL maybe 12-15 years ago, a low grade Cat 1 hardly worth boarding up for that came in around Palm Beach.  Once it made landfall it kinda stalled and we had torrential rain for 3 days even as the winds dropped off and it dropped off to a TS.

People were running jet skis down the main road into my development.  Every road in the place was flooded to some degree.  I tried to walk out and gave up when it got hip deep.  That's when I found out that my house is at the absolute high point for about a mile in any direction.  It would have taken another 6" of water before I'd get any in the house.  Some had 6" water in their living rooms.

Many storms much stronger than that 90's vintage Irene never dropped near as much water.

167 You all (yinz) in the path of the storm have a lot of grit in my book. I live in Pasadena, California. The deal here is supposed to be that in exchange for the small chance of a devastating earthquake that comes suddenly and breaks everything, we don't have to worry about the possibility of other devastating weather events as long as we don't live somewhere stupid like Malibu.

Eleven months ago, old Gaia broke that deal, delivering a windstorm that was by a huge margin the worst in living memory around here. For 18 hours, we lived in mortal fear as gale-force winds whipped our gigantic pines and oaks around like roly-polys. One large pine in our front yard, weakened by an undetected disease, snapped at the base and fell with a sickening WHUMP across our neighbor's driveway, landing between their two cars with not an inch to spare either way. I was terrified that the far larger pine (150 feet high, four feet across at the base) three feet away from our house would fall and kill someone. It didn't, but huge cracks appeared in the soil around it and our air conditioner was pushed up six inches by a root beneath it.

I've been through some large quakes, but I've never been half as frightened as I was for those 18 hours. And I realize full well that for many of you, this kind of storm is NOTHING.

And so, to all of you in the path of Sandy, it's not just my prayers that I send out to you, but my sincere and profound respect.

171 Trouble is, we don't know just how angry the ocean is about SUV's and wasting gasoline. We've been trying, but the ocean might not care.

175 A bunch of years ago I started researching places along the coast from NC to FL to move to. I wanted a certain combination of distance from the ocean with water access deep enough for a medium size boat, plus a certain elevation, plus a history of not getting whacked with hurricanes. Started with the Outer Banks and found a nice development with a marina 150 feet away, house on stilts on a nice elevation, protected etc. Didn't put a deposit down, thought I'd sell this place first. Within six months a minor Cat 2 came along and cut through the island about two miles away. Scratch that.

So I looked at the Gulf coast of FL, figuring that strong hurricanes couldn't make a sharp right turn. Checked the history and they hadn't had anything serious in over 50 years. Went down, found a new development on  a lake with a marina a short drive away. Waited. Sure as shit within six months a Cat 4 (coulda been a Cat 5) rounded the corner and made a beeline for the island. Devastated the hell out of it and weather people were baffled. Scratch that.

I did a little more research on a few other places, with the same result. Within a year they all got whacked. So I've stayed put and the hurricanes have kinda been pretty tame ever since. SE Pennsylvania isn't really that bad except for the months of Jan, Feb, and March. I don't think a Cat 1 is going to do much damage here, but southern NJ barrier islands are gonna take a beating. Anyone who decides to stay put in one of them tonight is insane. Maybe they'll get lucky and it will be low tide when maximum storm surge hits.

176 The outer banks is absolutely the worst lace for hurricanes in the US.  I would say if you wanted a place inland far enough to avoid the worst effect to get a place in Southern Georgia about 50 miles inland and then rent a storage thing for a boat down on the coast.

It has been a long long time since a hurricane came ashore in GA.

178 Some guy up in north FL build a concrete dome shaped house near the beach.  Ivan rolled right over his living room.  He had some reporters with him when the storm rolled in.  They said you could barely tell there was a massive hurricane going on outside.

When shit quieted down, they opened the door and saw the house took no damage worth noting.  Then they looked around for the neighboring houses...which simply weren't there anymore.

Building a Cat 5+ proof crib ain't that difficult or more expensive than traditional construction...its just different, and will have non-traditional cosmetics.

188 Yep, and they are saying wet snow.

That's what we had last year on our 'Halloween' snow storm. Any tree with leaves -- which most of them still had -- lost branches. I still have a pile 50 long by six feet high in my backyard to clean up. Damn mulberry trees with all their gnarly growth, that seem to stay green forever. The maple branches were easy.

I think we only lost power for a single day. I can do that standing up.

191 Having not read through all comments, I'd like to preemptively echo anyone who posited how cool it would be if there were a trusted service that, through intensive study of past behaviors,, coupled with predictive modeling, could warn people of impending doom. Sure would have limited the damage of Tropical Stupid Obama.
