Hurricane Sandy 10/30 update (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Hi, Morons and Moronettes. Quite a day on the weather desk... you've all seen the pictures, and I pray our friends in the affected areas stayed safe and have had relatively little property damage. Let's get you updated here...

Okay, the NHC is no longer classifying this as a hurricane as of the 11 PM EDT advisory. That means very little- the winds will still be plenty high, and there's still going to be an IMMENSE amount of rainfall from this. Until the storm passes completely, the water goes down, and the wires are picked up, please continue to treat this as a dangerous situation. More below the fold... Sandy.gif
Well, New Yorkers and New Jerseyites, this is what the real deal is like. Believe it or not, there are worse storms than this. I'm really sorry it had to happen like this, but I'd rather it be like this than a 1938-style Category 3 storm. Sandy made landfall about 20 miles south of Atlantic City, NJ around 8 PM EDT.

Sandy is now taking on the characteristics of a post-tropical low, but don't let that fool you... this is when people actually start really getting hurt. If you're in central PA and NY, you're still looking at major-league rain and high winds probably through most of the transit of the storm. If you're in the mountains in these areas, you need to plan for the possibility of serious snow as well.

Sandy's maximum sustained winds are still (as of 11 PM EDT) 75 mph (that's a Category 1 hurricane) with gusts to 90 mph. Sandy, as you saw, really stepped on the gas earlier today to haul ass ashore, and is now more or less right over the corner of Delaware Bay. Pressure is still a very impressive 952 mb, and movement is northwest at 18 mph.

The part that I'm waiting for comes at 5 AM EDT tomorrow, and that's the hydrology reports- these are going to be for the waterways through the affected areas. This is where all of you from Pennsylvania up through all of New England need to be on your toes- if you get enough water, it's going to come up QUICK, and you may not get a whole lot of warning on it. Those of you in Vermont went through this last year with Irene.

Beyond this point, folks, we're sort of at the limit of what I can tell you about. I don't know the waterways up in that neck of the woods, but what I can tell you is that this is where the water starts to really squeeze out of the remainder of the storm. I'm hoping it'll pick up speed on the way out of the area, and by the weekend, you should be in a position to start cleaning up. Please, though, don't start sightseeing- that, once again, is when people start getting killed.

Finally, please stay tuned to your local authorities in case things like levees and dams start to breach... this will all get past us in short order, but everyone stay smart and stay safe out there. I'm going to play it by ear over the next couple of days to see if I have anything intelligent to add, but at this point, it's really more a question for the hydrologists.

As ever, don't hesitate for a moment to contact me on Twitter at @tmi3rd... as many of you have found out, I'm quite available there, and I'm happy to help out.

Oh, almost forgot- I usually leave the pep talks to the greater wordsmiths on the blog, but I just want to tell all of you that it's been a long four years with the SCOAMF... a week from Tuesday, NOBODY STAYS HOME. Let's send his ass packing. I'm proud of everyone for hanging in there, and it's time to write a new chapter in American history.

Stay safe! VOTE!

some stuff on Twitter is terrible. NYU hospital has lost generator power and is being evacuated. People electrocuted. I don't even want to turn on the radio tomorrow to hear what they are going to find on the Jersey shore, so many fools did not evacuate and are going to end up dead. People in my neck of the woods are used to flooding but not high sustained winds.

Probably the scariest night of my life.

11 I'm in Columbia, MD but so far its seemed pretty tame, to be honest.  Mostly a constant "blowey" rain.

14 I don't even want to turn on the radio tomorrow to hear what they are going to find on the Jersey shore, so many fools did not evacuate and are going to end up dead.

There was a post earlier that the center of the storm came ashore next to Atlantic City-whose mayor told his people not to worry about it. That, seems to me, is going to be bad.

Posted by: Methos at October 29, 2012 07:16 PM (hO9ad)

15 Thanks everyone, I appreciate the good thoughts. I do tend to overreact to these things, but I have not experienced wind like this before. At least I don't have trees near the house and no danger of flooding. So if my roof stays on its all good. Have plenty of food and water and car chargers for phones and small appliances.

16 My little patch of heaven here in South Philly is relatively unscathed so far, thank God and knock wood. Still have a long night ahead of us. Since I already know that my office is closed tomorrow I may stroll around to the bar for some Valu Rite and perspective.

Posted by: Damn Sockpuppet at October 29, 2012 07:17 PM (yJYwC)

17 Rockmom, your winds will stay up for a while, and you have probably one more serious band of rain to go, but it should begin to subside overnight. Can't speak for your roof, but I spent several summers in Doylestown, and as long as you're not in danger of flooding, things should be just fine.

We can confirm that there has been water infiltration into the New York City Subway tunnels under the East River. We cannot confirm a depth.

The Atlantic City story is a huge one. Dumbass mayor did not order mandatory evacuation, a lot of people states. Then fled to shelters in schools, one of which is just a block from the bay and flooded almost immediately and lost power. Gov. Christie is furious and ended up calling up a National Guard unit to go get the people out of the two flooded shelters and take them to a high school that is on higher ground and has a generator. AC is a resort area on the beach, but the town inland is very poor with lots of people who aren't very smart or responsible. I fear many of them are not going to be alive tomorrow.

20 Getting ready to step out for the nightly 3 miler with the dog, but NYCers, I'd be surprised if you've got subways back before the end of the week. Digging out from these ALWAYS sucks, but be patient- things do normalize. Hang in there.

When I lived on Guam we had a Super Typhoon...of course you have no where to go so you just hunker down. The wind was so strong it would blow through my key hole in the front door ....sounded like a tea kettle....And when we would lose power it was truly dark since we had no neighboring cities with power to light up the sky. But when it was all over with and we knew power would not be restored for a week or so we had the best neighborhood barbecues (have to cook up whats in the fridge/freezer). believe it or not...it was good times... because neighbors came together and pitched in to help each other.

27 Tmi3rd, thanks. My real concern is that my house is a piece of crap and not built to withstand these winds. We've lost bits of siding and roofing before.  We are on top of a hill and have had frequent short periods of high winds, but not sustained like this with very big gusts. also have a gazebo that may come down. We did not think to buy any tarps so if we have roof damage it could be bad. My daughter is scared and sleeping on the floor downstairs.

28 The best line of this post is "it has been a long four years with SCOAM!" We must send him back to Chicago, Hawaii or Kenya. But TFG and wife, Hillary, Pannetta all must go ASAP. I am worried about what they'll do to us in the lame duck session. That should be removed, by law, unless the POTUS is reelected and 95% of Congress is going to return. I don't trust them, especially if they have nothing to lose, to screw us a few more times. When MItt wins in less than a week, the government should lock up everything in the White House, I expect more damage to it than when the Clintons left.

The surge   [as high as 13 ft]              hit New York City hours after a construction crane atop a luxury high-rise collapsed in the wind and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top the building may have been close to 95 mph.

33 Rockmom- Fair enough. Best bet is to stay on the ground floor near a well-supported area of the house. You'll hear it if something unpleasant starts to let go. 60 Prayers for all...and you, rockmom. Hang in there. It is almost over.

Photos of NYC are horrific. I think this is going to be worse than Katrina in terms of damage to property. I hope and pray not in loss of life.

I also worry about the chaos that will follow. NOLA is pretty small potatoes compared to NYC and NJ in terms of population. How many of these people are prepared for any disaster with food and/or a flashlight in those dark buildings? Are they all waiting for the government to help them. Here in hurricane alley you are told, by the governors, to not expect help for possibly a week. Not that everyone listens, but we are used to it.

I worked with emergency mgmt during and after 9/11. There was more of a sense of preparedness then, and briefly following Katrina for some. People sadly don't pay attention until it touches them. Please, if you read this, please prepare for the worst in the best way you can afford for future events. In every phone book and at the Red Cross site there is an explanation for "shelter in place." Do it for your family. This ends my rant...but I am a little more worried about the tipping point after seeing NYC flooded and dark tonight. Stay safe.

Prayers for all of you in Sandy's path from Florida.

So my little sister texted earlier to tell me that the eye of the storm passed over them, and they were ok so far.  Lots of wind, not too much rain in Ocean City NJ a few hours ago.  I am still praying hard for her and her family.

98 I was just thinking about all that earlier...I know that the states that were hit are predominantly blue states. And I know they did and will continue to pile on Bush till the day they day (despite Bill Clinton taking longer to go down to Florida during Andrew) That said, I didn't see any lines of buses coming to get people to take them out of the city. What happened, correctly, is the authorities give the order to evacuate. Then, it is every man for themselves. If you get out of Dodge, great choice. If you decide to wait it out, again that's your choice. I just don't see all the coddling we saw with Katrina. Why is it that the poor and/or black folks down in Louisiana are just unable to take care of themselves, but the poor and/or black folks up in New York City have the sense to either get out or find shelter, but (knock on wood) you are not seeing any of them interviewed whining about how they were just left to die.

104 tmi, I think we're gonna be OK in Pennsylvania and other inland areas with regard to flooding. I was watching the hydrometeorologic charts pretty frequently since my location in Montgomery County is subject to flash flooding. Since the storm sped up, rain here and elsewhere in the region has consistently been on the low side of forecasts, plus it came down over a long enough period that the drainage can keep up with it. We'll have some minor flooding of creeks, and moderate to major flooding down in Chester County and Delaware, but none of it will be as bad as last year. As long as the power stays on and we don't get too much wind damage, the morons here should be cleaning up our homes and neighborhoods tomorrow morning, doing what we can to help our friends along the shore and in NY clean up the next few days, and cleaning out the White House next Tuesday.

124 Keep an eye on this storm even after it's well inland.  When I was but a wee moron of 3 back in 1969, growing up in Virginia, Hurricane Camille came ashore and devastated Mississippi.  Three days later, the remnants of the storm hooked a hard right over Kentucky, crossed the mountains into Virginia, and then...wham.  The county just north of us got hit with 25 inches of rain IN EIGHT HOURS overnight.  Nearly as many people died there (around 110) as died in Mississippi, and most never knew what hit them...either the mudslides carried them away in their sleep or they woke up to their house being torn apart around them.  We were safe where we were--it was a very localized rain event--but I have faint memories of helicopters coming and going over the house for a couple of days.

Nature doesn't play fair sometimes.

And while I wouldn't vote for Chris Christie for President, it was nice to see the Big Man rip the mayor of AC a new one when he decided to go Full Metal Ray Nagin and downplay the hurricane.

Can you ever imagine Colorado or Texas on fire, can you ever imagine that? I cannot imagine that!

192 Still have electricity in my corner of SE Pa! After HC Irene last year and a couple day outage the electric company had the tree people they contract with spend about a month in this area. Occasional light flickering and some wind noise but it's pretty much done.

Around 8 pm last night road became impassable due to branches down. Part of road to my area was closed due to creek rising and foot and a half of water covering it. Worst of storm blew overhead about 11:00 pm with sound of freight train and much debris hitting roof. Heard a serious branch -- probably around a thousand pounds or so -- come down in front yard shortly after. Free firewood, but I don't think I'll mess with it until I get a chance to walk all around and see if there's any other 'widow-maker' branches hanging by a thread.

At least I don't own any Jersey beach front real estate. Some YouTube videos already appearing from yesterday morning showing water up into the first floor.

207 Central Delaware reporting. Still raining a bit (we've gotten 9.27" so far), but the wind is currently only about 16. It's too dark to see much yet, but aside from a small leak when the rain and wind were out of the north, the house seems to be OK. Haven't lost electricity so far, so unless something hits a power pole, we should be fine.

208 Safe &dry here in central NJ but not for Ma Nature's efforts in the opposite direction overnight. Winds were sustained in the 60s for hours with much higher gusts. Lost a big tree in the back yard, but it didn't hit the house. Town lost power about 7:30pm, still out, no idea when it'll be back. Shortly after the lights went out I saw out the window what looked like a series of lightning flashes. It wasn't lightning - it was pole-mounted transformers blowing up one by one all over town. Pretty light show, but I don't think the town had the proper permit for it. They'll prolly get busted by that new cabinet-level Department of Electricity. Especially because our mayor is Republican.

...

More intelligent children in both studies grew up to drink alcohol more frequently and in greater quantities than less intelligent children.

Researchers controlled for demographic variables -- such as marital status, parents' education, earnings, childhood social class and more -- that may have also affected adult drinking. Still, the findings held true: Smarter kids were drinking more as adults.

238 the three little towns in New Jersey that had to be emergency evacuated this morning are not swanky or fancy. They are little towns that have not had flooding like this before. They are populated with old people and families and little league teams like you would expect. There are lots of little towns in NJ like that. When I lived in NJ I did not cackle at the disasters that happened elsewhere.

249 Sandy was never given hurricane status except by the hyperventilating media mouths.

So did the Sandy sustained wind speeds EVER reach any hurricane status? No.

Wishful fishing, what the Democrat national leadership and media achieved yesterday is their own revision of Katrina, that they never dismissed the warnings to evacuate in advance of the HURRICANE because, "you know how much Democrats and big gov care about you."

This was far from the average hurricane. It is the same model which created the Perfect Storm in 91.

270 I was reading that there was NJ real estate valued at 12.5 billion on just one of the barrier islands close to the storm. Multiply by probably ~10 areas that size. From what I've seen from the YouTubers, it's mainly the older homes that aren't on pilings that probably got -- at minimum -- first floor flooding. Nowadays they make you strip all the drywall, pull the insulation and put up fresh before you're allowed to re-occupy the home. That's gonna be expensive but still better then having the home float away.

I'm gonna guess 20 billion damage in NJ.

271 The people who are fawning over Obama are the same people who voted for him last time. I doubt it will change undecideds who are moderates. The people in NJ who are not Obamabots know that it was our Governor who took charge and our towns who gave us prep warnings-not Obama.

272 People with generators and the fuel to run them will be very popular today.  Honda generators are the best, less noise.  Batteries will be in short supply, and open gas stations will be hit and miss in areas where the power is off.  Getting cell phones re-charged will be easy if you have an auto with a re-charge cord, if not maybe someone near you has one (of course it has to be the right kind of cord for your phone).  If a business is open because they have a generator maybe they will re-charge your phone for you.  If you have an outdoor grill or camping stove with fuel that will come in handy and you can boil water if you have to.  Just a few tips I remember when our power was out for awhile.

273 7.4 million without power, seems pretty bad. On another website I frequent, a lot thought it was nothing even before it happened, and questioned the "super" status accorded. I took it to mean the vast size of the storm, not the winds, ws what accorded it a "super" status, among other things.

Recall that I didn't need to wait until today to post empathy for those in Sandy's flood path from Texas. Did that yesterday when I posted the official denial from the national hurricane bureau. And to those like Christi realizing how important federal funds are after such an "act of God" state of emergency following destruction, I'll remind you again the justification for Congressman Ron Paul requesting aid for Galveston, his constituents, after so many SEVERE HURRICANES struck the Gulf region, and his political critics smearing him as corrupt for representing the very real needs of Texans after major storm destruction of life and property.

So ask the SCOAMFT, "If winds and floods destroy a swath of the country, but your property remains intact, is there really any destruction to speak of, or any pain felt?" Particularly, did any destruction "really" occur when those affected are not politically correct? Does anyone really die when they aren't members of your immediate family? Schadenfreude's a bitch.

If morons take that wrong, think again. Destruction by "act of God" hurts, severely. So, is Obama to declare a WAR ON GOD? Hell, that's been Obama's game all along, preaching Marxism as divine intervention. War on Neptune? whatever.

277 for people to fawn over how presidential Obama is and how he is handling it soooo much better than Bush.
--

Since Bush repeatedly advised Americans along the Gulf where Katrina was headed to EVACUATE and heed the forecast warnings.

Don't allow the MFM to maintain their own whole cloth compounded by revisionism, not without grass roots recall. All those buses sitting in low water parking lots rather than facilitating the evacuation of New Orleans. And on that, remember the corrupt politician caught removing stolen funds from his home "safe" (refrigerator?).

Sad state of affairs when local representation hates its own so completely.

And as to where federal funds were awarded, Mississippi getting the short end of the Louisiana stick.

278 206 Good morning all. I spoke with my parents late last night and while the water came up to the house during high tide, it didn't come in. The wind was slowing down too. They think that today's high tides will be the worst of it, so it looks like they made it through without a problem. I'm still mad as hell that they stayed, which I made perfectly clear.

Very glad to read that they are ok, Danger Girl.

281 I'm 10 miles from New Orleans and my place was untouched by Katrina.  Took 3 weeks for power to be restored and then another 2 months before it was reliable though.  The only grocery store open within a few miles didn't have power for 2 weeks - they lined people up outside and brought us in groups with flashlights.

We won't know for a day or two how bad things really are.  NYC could get bad.
