58 Million Tuned Into Last Night's Debate, More Than In 2008
— Ace

FNC topped the ratings. It just barely edged CBS and ABC.

Still, cable over broadcast network.

Obviously this means that a goodly number of people saw the debate, and that's a Good Thing.

I'm thinking this: Remember in 2008, how Obama captured the imagination of so many? And so many tuned in because of the unprecedentedness of it all? The drama? The celebrity angle? That it was more than politics, it was a Happening?

I'm wondering if any case could be made that even more people tuning in now is bad for Obama, even ignoring his performance. If you're still sold on Obama, it's not like you haven't seen Obama six thousand times already. You know his schtick. Nothing new coming down the pike.

So why would more tune in now? Surely it's not because more people have jumped on the bandwagon; that is inconceivable. You don't gain supporters with 17% real unemployment.

I don't know if much of a case can be made for that line. But I wonder.

Anyway, whether that slapdash logic works or not -- Obama was surely hoping that not too many people tuned in. Well, that hope was dashed.

Extra bonus: The stakes have been raised, and hence the drama. That means, I hope, that more people than usual will tune into Ryan/Biden.

And I don't want to count chickens before they hatch but... it's plus ten chickens.

A Romney Rally? So speculated.

65 Million? On Twitter, someone said Rush is quoting the 65 million figure, which doesn't include Spanish-language broadcasts or internet viewers.

7 I think an angle that hasn't been covered sufficiently is that a ton of people are JUST tuning into the election. And with those numbers, a lot of people CARE about this election, even if they're just tuning in. Last night was the first REAL look they got at Romney, not filtered through the media. And Romney knocked it out of the park, while the President looked like a failure.

I think a reasonable conclusion is that LOTS of people are REALLY concerned about the state of the country, and are REALLY interested in seeing if the non-Obama candidate might just offer a real alternative.

They tuned in to see that, and what they saw was - President Romney, financial turnaround miracle-worker, ready to restore America's glory.  Maybe this really is a game-changer.

39 2008, McCain was uninspiring. I did not watch.

Obama is the same. Nothing new to see here. Romney is different. And people need a reason to believe that things are going to get better.

Also remember, the digital TV transition occurred in 2009. There is no counting the people that viewed the debates via digital OTA broadcasts, like we did. The number is higher than 58 M.

40 And they are off_ For Obama, words not said in debate spoke the loudest By Samuel P. Jacobs | Reuters – WASHINGTON (Reuters) - During their 90-minute debate on Tuesday night, President Barack Obama talked four minutes longer than Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But when the debate was over, it was what Obama didn't say that defined the evening - and helped make it a good one for Romney. In a debate that largely was a mix of campaign talking points and tedious policy detail, the themes that Obama's campaign have emphasized to drive down Romney's approval ratings did not surface. Obama did not mention Romney's work at Bain Capital, the private equity firm whose role in sending thousands of jobs overseas has been cited by Obama's campaign as it has portrayed Romney as a job-killer.

I watched it on Cspan.

Cspan had them in a split-screen...the whole time.

It was very revealing.

Details I noticed:

• Both candidates had Flag Pins on their lapels...Romney's was bigger, twice the size of Barky's.

• Barky was wearing a suit with noticeably more shoulder-padding, than usual....which camouflaged his small shoulders.

• Romney's head is bigger than Barky's.

Do they include the Cspan viewers in the 'ratings numbers'...the numbers for Total Viewers?

68 from Breitbart / Big Gov't:

Here are the five biggest--and worst--excuses for Obama's defeat:

5. We won’t know for 2-3 days whether Mitt Romney actually won. The idea here seems to be that the polls will tell us who won, although even CNN’s instant polling of those who had watched the debate had it at 67%-25% in Romney’s favor. This excuse has a purpose: to buy time for so-called “fact-checkers” to attack Romney’s arguments and change the narrative from “Romney won” to “Romney lied.” Speaking of which...

4. Romney lied with a straight face for ninety minutes. This excuse betrays the fact that so many on the left never leave their own media bubble. They believe what they tell each other about Romney and his policies, rather than listening or learning the truth. A good example was Rachel MaddowÂ’s battle with Rudy Giuliani afterwards, in which she insisted Romney lied about a $5 trillion tax cut that he has never, in fact, proposed. Sad.

3. The free-flowing format was bad and let Romney dominate. On the contrary, the format allowed Obama to deploy his favorite defense, the filibuster. It just so happened that Romney didnÂ’t let him get away with it, insisting on the right to reply to repeated distortions of his position. It is ObamaÂ’s fault, not the formatÂ’s, that he didnÂ’t know when to stop talking, letting himself lose focus while the words kept coming out.

2. The moderator, Jim Lehrer, let Romney win. This is the Obama campaign’s official excuse, judging by the post-debate comments of Stephanie “Felon” Cutter, who argued that Lehrer allowed Romney to dominate. Actually, Lehrer was his usual liberal self, and was tougher on Romney than on Obama, interjecting more often with follow-up questions and letting the president use a full four minutes more than his challenger.

1. Obama didnÂ’t show up tonight. This was the lament of Chris Matthews, who suggested--colorfully--that Obama had not tried hard enough to win the debate. The idea, once again--it is always the same when Obama suffers a setback--is that the president needs to fight harder, to be more aggressive. In fact, Obama was often too hostile. What needs to change are the ideas, not the tactics. And itÂ’s too late for that.

Posted by: mallfly at October 04, 2012 10:23 AM (bJm7W)

69 The CNN poll after the debate claims that Romney netted a 17% vote gain. 58M *.17= 9.86M Now you need to figure for 18+ adult, reg, and likely voters so the number is much smaller than that, but Mitt probably switched enough voters in one debate to completely erase Obama's 2008 margin of victory.

82 My mom, who hates Obama, was telling me her theory that Obama tanked his own first debate to set up the narrative that he's getting stronger, and to lull Romney and the GOP into complacency. She's taking my don't be overconfident philosophy a little too seriously. As Sigmund Freud once said, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes an ass-whoopin is a beat down by a bigger, stronger man!" Ryan shouldn't be overconfident in debate prep.

Go back to the Bork hearings, and Biden's other hatchet jobs in the Senate.  This tool will literally say anything.  Anything his commie handlers tell him to say, he will.  I expect him to come out slashing against Ryan personally, and Romney even more so, since he won't be on stage to defend/rebut.  Don't underestimate a desperate zero who's about to get his ass kicked out on the street.

Then the inflation will hit, then the boomers will start leaving this realm in droves and shit will really hit the fan.

A real estate agent explained it to me once. When people come back to look at your 'for sale' house a second time, they aren't looking for a reason to buy it. They're looking for reasons not to.

I'm not sure how true that is. In 2008 the debates went from 52.4 million viewers for the first to 63 million for the 2nd. Maybe those people were looking for a reason to vote against Obama but the increased viewership didn't seem to hurt him.

138 Couple of observations today about the debates.

Went by the RR HQ here in Roanoke again today to try to get a yard sign. They are out, again. Cars were streaming into the parking lot the whole time I was there trying to pick up signs. The kid at the HQ said they got some in the other day, and people poured in this morning to pick them up.

While at lunch, I saw a friend of my sister who was eating lunch with her husband. I talked to them for a while and her husband said that yesterday he was voting against Obama, now he is voting for Romney.

Romney made the sale last night. The election is over.

141 Cogent blog post.  Two points:  (1) it's not a Romney "rally."  That implies   Romney was behind.  He wasn't.  Never was.  Those recent media polls were   propaganda specifically designed to depress Romney's fundraising, affect the   early voting and ultimate to suppress conservative turnout.  (2) more people   tuned in this year than in '08 because simply put the stakes are a lot higher.  In   '08 we were having a crisis.  In '12 we've been having a crisis, for four   consecutive years!

Speaking of Spanish language television, how has Obama been handling the foreign policy with our neighbor to the south, Mexico?  I mean other than launching an operation that intentionally supplyied high-powered weapons to the drug cartels so they could be found at the scenes of mass murders.  And not bothering to inform the Mexican government that he was going to be doing so.

Which brings us to our relationship with our neighbors to the north.  Do we count that cancellation of the Keystone Pipeline among Obama's foreign policy brilliancies or not?  Not that it's working out all the bad for Canada, since China (for now) is happy to buy all that oil that I guess America doesn't need.

Biden's fast-ball, if it can be called that, is clocking in the low-80's on a good day and he's been fielding nothing but a steady diet of softballs from Barry's rump-swab brigades since Ofail put him on the ticket (over 4-years ago).

Ryan cut his teeth in what used to be a deep-blue state (WI) and has been doing the hostile media circuit for the last 2-years defending (quite deftly) the GOP budget since he became Chair of that committee in Jan 2011.

Yeah, I like Ryan's chances to turn Slo Joe into a muttering pile of drooling mush within 35-minutes, "Moderator" slant be damned.

The UN Human Rights Council published its “technical guidance” to address maternal mortality and morbidity in July, to “assist policymakers in improving women’s health and rights.” The document starts from the abortion industry’s assertion that the best way to reduce maternal mortality is to introduce legalised abortion and reduce legal and other restrictions on abortion. Under the “rights-based” approach to women’s health care, the document says, states are “obliged” to use “maximum available resources” to “protect against interference with sexual and reproductive health rights by third parties by enforcing appropriate laws, policies, regulations and guidelines.” “There is a strong presumption against any retrogressive measures in relation to sexual and reproductive health,” the document continues. Why do all liberals hate babies?

Biden is a more natural speaker.  He's also shameless.  He'll say anything if he thinks it sounds good at the moment, helpful, harmful, truthful, or outright lie.

So you'll see Biden slinging an hour of avuncular bafflegab, and he'll sound just fine and the press will go away calling it a draw (at worst), and it'll be a week before any of them bother to figure out that it was mostly bullshit.

So Mitt Romney was preparing against thing Obama was really probably going to say.

Obama, on the other hand, believes the caricature they've built of Romney is the real thing- so he prepared against that.

246 How Gangnam Style is a "thing".

I understand that Gangnam province in South Korea is sort of wealthy area, kind of like Orange County, and that Psy is flexing the opulence and such. I don't know. I guess I don't see the popularity.

I don't think many people outside South Korea think about the social geography of Gangnam at all. To most people outside South Korea, Gangnam Style is about the singer and how he behaves in the video, not the region. It's just a fun song and video.

Yeah, I saw it.  Nice eye candy.  And yes, he looks hilarious like he's at a rodeo or something.

248 65 million is half of the voters in the 2008 election.

There is no way this number is good for Obama, regardless of their reasoning.

254 There is a photo going around of Romney gathering his notes from the podium and Mooch and Barry looking for an exit off stage. Mooch has her normal lady-like stance with a big-ol scary frown on her anniversary (man, did Barry make y'all barf last night when he started his gig with that Hallmark moment?). Barry looks his typical self: bewildered and smiling, like a half-wit in a fugue state. Our wicked overlord, Romney, has a smile on his face as he collects his notes (which had real notes on them, I'll bet, and not doodles or "I hate Mitt Romney" written in the margins.

The line I wrote down from Paul Ryan's speech at the RNC would be appropriate under the photo of the dejected Obama's (for you photoshop experts):

"Borrowed...Spent & Wasted"

I'm laughing at some of you worried about the  Ryan/Biden debate.  Y'all were making somewhat the same projections  leading up to last night's debate.

When the facts are on your side, you win.  People know when the truth bell has been rung, especially after the dismal performance of the WH crew the last four years.

Plus, Ryan is just fucking smarter than Biden.  Al Greene is fucking smarter than Biden.

261 I'm always struck by people who think that Mitt Romney did so well in the debate last night.  If you dominate a debate, you didn't do that.  Someone else did that for you.  Could Mitt Romney have even GOTTEN TO THE DEBATE if government hadn't built the road to the university auditorium?  Think about it.

Expectations are so low for Biden that he might actually do well....at least the media will spin it as a Biden win.

Ryan should just start   working  math   problems  during the debate.   Biden couldn't figure out   2+2.

264 Last night was the reason why the primary fight was good for the GOP. They fought and scrapped the whole 6+ months to just get enough delegates for the nomination. Now Romney has a 60 day campaign that he is in essence going 1 on 1 with Bambi, and after seeing Bambi play hoops, my golden retriever could take Bambi 1on1.

268 218 Biden will just lie and Paul Ryan will spend the night trying to refute everything Biden says, but will be rushed. Being a congressman, Ryan is quite familiar with debating shameless liberals as well as the concept of proper time management. As long as he is as concise and accurate as possible, he should be fine.

They picked Kerry because someone had the idea that Kerry knew how Mitt Romney thinks.

John Kerry, who made his money by marrying widows with a trust fund, never made a dime in the private sector, never had a real job, but he knows how Mitt Romney thinks.

Posted by: soothsayer at October 04, 2012 02:46 PM (jUytm)

Because the Democrat party and its operatives are racist.

Kerry like Romney is rich.

And since these cocksuckers prey on segregating and dividing and characiturizing every group to its simplistic variables...

The Rich like the Blacks the hispanics the jews the fill in the blank are all the same and you cant tell the difference between one or another of them.

If Obama was debating a Gigalo, then Kerry would have been a well thought out and reasonable pick.

"Remember in 2008, how Obama captured the imagination of so many? And so many tuned in because of the unprecedentedness of it all?"

Too bad Juan McLame didn't "tune in".  OTOH, he might have turned out nearly as bad as Obama.  We might now be facing an election where OUR guy was unelectable, but that truth would be all over the media.

Ghoul that I am, I tuned into MSNBC after the debacle and heard several mentions of how the Republicans "scrapped" and were "rowdy" during their primaries, like that was a terrible thing.  Same crap coming out of NPR this morning - noting that since the crowd was supposed to be silent, "it wasn't at all like the Republican primaries".

Bet more than a few Donks are wishing they could have had a scrappy primary instead of a naked-emperor coronation.

Look, Lets be honest.  THe last four years have been an unmitigated Disaster.

However...if McLameass had won, it wouldnt have been a phenomenol last 4 years cause that mother fucker was Obama Lite, and right now we would be staring down the double barrels of the prospect of President Hillary Cankles in 3 months.

While Obama has cause significant damage to the country, the disaster that has been his presidency may just be what the country needed to put itself back on the right path...much like Carter led to Reagan, and yes even thought i never cared for Mitt much, last night convinced me that this man could be the next reagan.

I rewatched the speech last night and at points i was working and just listening and there were moments where it almost sounded like the Gipper talking.

Hold his feet to the fire and we may make him a great president.

But I now believe Ann when she says This man will not fail.  WHat he did last night was a masterclass performance.

One way or another on Nov 6 America will get exactly what she deserves.

Ryan vs. Biden.

That will be like watching someone hunt a dairy cow with a high powered rifle.

"Slow Joe" takes on a grown up version of Eddie Munster--assuming Eddie graduated college, learned how to balance national budgets, and mastered that martial art the name of which I can never remember, but it's the one where every encounter ends with somebody getting his arm broken. You know. That Eddie.

280 The counter-explanation would be that many Obama supporters tuned in because the hype the past few weeks has made them believe Obama would decisively beat up on a helpless Romney. I'd obviously prefer your explanation, but I don't really know that right reason for the ratings spike.
