I Know An Ending When It Comes
— Monty

I've decided to turn my hiatus into a permanent vacation, my groovy babies.

There is an old bar-room weeper sung by Emmylou Harris called "I Know An Ending When It Comes", and I think for me that time is now.

I've got too many demands on my time, and not enough hours in the day to service them all. It's no one's fault but mine: I took all these burdens on. But it's time to declare this particular job finished and move on to other things.

It's been no end of fun blogging (and tweeting!) on the HQ. I love the Moron Horde, and believe more than ever that Ace's site is one of the best hangouts on the web. Ace himself is the polestar of this enterprise, and his wit and humor -- and occasional ill temper -- are what give the site its characteristic tone. It's been an honor to work with the other co-bloggers in contributing content to the site over the years, first as a commenter, then as a co-blogger.

I will not disappear entirely. I will continue to make the site a daily stop, and you may see my name pop up in the comments section from time to time. However, this will be the end of 'The Daily DOOM' and the Sunday book thread (under my byline, anyhow). I hope that over the time I've been doing these things I've managed to entertain, inform, and maybe coerce a mordant chuckle or two out of you.

I am leaving not in anger, or depression, or disillusionment. I am simply leaving because I have done the job I meant to do, and said all the things I wanted to say. I've begun to repeat myself. History, like music, moves in circles, and I find myself treading the same old ground over and over again. The task is done. Time to move on to the next thing.

Ace: you are an Ewok of rare vintage indeed. Thank you so much for allowing me to contribute to your site.

To the co-bloggers: You guys have been great in more ways than I can possibly express. It's odd to feel such a close kinship to people I've never actually met face-to-face, but so it is.

To the commenters: Thanks for reading my stuff, and for keeping me honest. Thanks for catching me out when I put my foot in it. Thanks for the humor, and the insight, even the disagreements. You guys are a large part of what makes this site work -- don't forget that.

I may have missed a lot of things you said
I know most of them went right overhead
But with all my heart I know this song's been sung
And at least I know an ending when it comes.

Monty, I apologize for not having told you before how much I enjoyed (?) The Daily Doom, how informative it was, and how educational. I really don't know what I'll read every morning for a super-concentrated dose of boundless pessimism leavened with snark.

The book thread was my absolute not-to-be-missed every Sunday, and if no one else will take it on, I'll volunteer.

As will I.

116 While I don't comment much (I'm not nearly funny enough), I do check in on this place at least once a day. I've been DOOMy since before the Y2K(!) thingi, but my fambily just tolerated my DOOMiness as "Mmmnyah, yeah. Don't pay him much attention. He's crazy like that".

But, Monty, your Daily Doom gave me real ammunition to support the inner unease that I've been feeling for lo, all these many years. I came away amazed every day that you could a) find all these DOOMy articles and then 2) stitch them together in such an educational and entertaining way. I gave up my very crappy blogging years ago, mainly because I was very crappy at it, but also because it is a lot of work, and I have a fambily, a job, and a life outside the intertunnel that needs my attention too. Thanks for doing all that work for a bunch of morons. You made being DOOMy into something cool. DOOM is the new Black (does that make me a racist? I denounce myself. Nevermind, I'm digressing.).

As you go away from us (or maybe I should speak for just myself), you should know that while your Daily Doom is now retired, the DOOM itself remains. I'll just have to find it on my ownself.

156 Monty, I've been lurking for several years, since being banned by the madman at LGF where I was an infrequent commenter, and never commented on AoSHQ before. Your DOOM and SBT posts were must-reads for me. I opened most of your links, read all the comments, and made them a regular part of my day. Fridays and Saturdays seemed barren and empty with no DOOM, waiting for SBT, and now all seven days of the week will be similarly bereft of wit and interest. I will miss your work, but as a writer I understand what it took out of you and why you can no longer continue. Life passes on as an endless parade. Thanks and best luck in your new endeavors.

Good luck, Monty. the DOOM! thread was something I always looked forward to. Not because I was "rooting for" economic collapse, like our leftist trolls would say, but because it was confirmatory evidence that the economy was on an unstainable path and it was necessary to alert as many people as possible to the impending danger.

At this point, anyone not concerned about what may lay ahead and taking some steps to weather the storm is simply engaged in willful suspension of disbelief. As has been said, there are none so blind as those that will not see.

177 Dear Monty,

Thank you for all of the great book suggestions. I bought many copies (from Acemazon) of two and gave them for xmas presents to friends in need of read.
I enjoyed the Doom series because I'm trying to convince all of me friends and some family still living in CA to GTFO (and colonize a city in Nevada or OR) and I loved sending the Doom info about how boned they were, voting for Jerry over a CEO!!!
I hope one of Aces' members (ahem: Morons) can continue the Book read and the Doom blog entries like you hint, but they'd better be able to read at a high school level, and make Doom looking graphs w/o using "Clippy" for Gfx help.
It's tough hunting to earn co-blogger status, and I think we should waive the "3, NEW: UnScattered HoBo Domain" requirement dowry to help get contestants to battle till mirth, or until your pant-seats are filled.

Sincerely,

227 No wonder you went all DOOMy, Monty.

Found this on the Bad Poetry thread:

AN ODE TO MY RASH

With a Promethean itch it presented itself
A firelike burning under my arm
A bright red weal of shame
An armpit full of rash

Or is it prickly-heat?
I cannot say;
Only that it resists all balms,
All ointments, all salves, all powders.
It is a rash for the ages,
A rash of the Apocalypse,
An itchy burning reminder
That we are flesh and flesh is mortified.

For in this rash is grief and sorrow
And let us not forget B.O.
(for deodorant is too painful).
This rash leaves me a pariah in my own land.
A pitable figure, scratching subversively
lest I be seen and mocked.
A bearer of armpit stink
Shunned and hated
And barred from elevators.

By this rash I am tormented and humbled.
By this rash I am shamed and abased.

Armpit rash, depart! For I am in agony
and have run out of salve.

338 Monty no! The fun is just starting in CA! Stockton seems to be one of the first to go bankrupt because of pensions, and its going to happen like dominoes out here. Can't. Wait. I've been hearing these gov't workers bragging about their 100% pensions while being paid $100k a year for too long. Now its their turn. When they lose their pensions because of bankruptcy i'll be laughing my ass off.

The police in Stockton are trying to hold the city hostage, too. I think this should be a national story. They are intimidating the city manager into not cutting their pay (what is math? derr). The head of the police union BOUGHT THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR TO THE CITY MANAGER TO BULLY HIM. They have also put up billboards saying how homicides are at an all time high, and if you cut our benefits.. well, we may not answer those 911 calls..

These people should be strung up

I suspect Monty's real problem is that he's too busy digging the swimming pool in which he'll keep the silver dimes he's earned from shorting California during his DOOM! years so that he can dive into them and swim around like Scrooge McDuck.

343 This means Califronia WILL continue to fail, right? That's my daily pick me up. To open my computer every morning and have the varied headlines of California's impending doom brings me warmth and satisfaction. The proof that what I believe works in a society is true and what the progressives think works always leads to doom, failure and embarrassment. I will truly miss that but know in my heart it is continuing along schedule.

Thanks again....appreciate you and totally understand.

Seeing Ace burn out is making me see that the responsibility for an internet site, with fans, is really tough. You start out thinking no one is going to read your stuff and then you turn around and find a you've had a million readers and your writing are now your life and maybe you didn't plan it that way. You gots to do what's best for you and yours, so thanks a whole bunch for sharing what you have shared. It's been quite the education.

421

Monty,

The "DOOM" was for me at least, a "Heads Up" for the weekly news cycle.

I would always read your post first off in the morning so I could STEEL myself for that weeks' adventure and given the nature of our current administration, the rapid fire stomache punches was a good way to toughen up the ab's and give me the courage to face the week with hardened belly muscles! Losing Andy made for saddness, now you going to the sidelines makes the saddness a tad bit more profound. I am also in fear that the Republicans are going to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory given the outcome of "LessThan Super Tuesday!" I do hope that you may bless us again with your wit and insight if the fight becomes.....mortal combat.

Pray, that it not comes to that.

Most Respectfully,

Richard
