Actually, I was going the other way. It's so easy to get government assistance, that you actually have to go to some effort to avoid it. To the point that it's actually, in some instances, takes more effort to avoid the assistance than to receive it.

And once you're receiving assistance, you can't really be called "poor" anymore, because you'll be able to afford things that would be the envy of any King or Queen from just a century or so ago.

Even in ultra-con Texas, it's easier to be on Federal and State aid than be truly poor. From what I hear, it's actually a system designed that way (Thanks, Feds!). The first thing to do is get on WIC (which, apparently, is pathetically easy). Then, once you're on any kind of assistance (thus, the pathetically easy to qualify for WIC) most agencies just assume you then also qualify for whatever assistance they provide.

Poof! Now you're living like an upper-middle class family thanks to State and Federal Taxpayers.
