— Jack M. I bet y'all didn't know that you could learn a lot about how to succeed in politics by listening to classic rock.
It's true. On a related note, you can also learn a lot by listening to Foreigner.
See what I did there? Poor Foreigner...they tried so hard.
But I digress...let me turn back to the subject at hand.
Head Games. Remember when Clint Eastwood stood up at the GOP convention and made it culturally acceptable to acknowledge what, heretofore, had only been spoken of on right wing blogs and talk radio: namely that our so-called president was an empty chair?
Of course you do. It was awesome.
Well, remember what our soon-to-be ex-president's immediate response to Eastwood was? He manned-up and asserted his Alpha-male dominance in the most Beta-male way possible: he sent out a tweet. Of the back of his head. In a chair with a label on it, kinda like the labels your mom may have put in your underwear before sending you off to summer camp to be beat up by the kids who noticed you had labels in your underwear.
Here's that tweet. (Warning, links to the president's twitter feed). "This seat's taken." Oh meeeee-owwwwwww.
Oh, the chortles that Team Barry must have had over that tweet. I'm sure Axelrod and Plouffe were high-fiving each other over this devastatingly macho rejoinder to being called out by one of the Great American Iconic Tough Guys.
Fast forward a couple of months though. Guess who has a new ad out? Why...it's the soon to be 45th President of the United States, Mitt Romney.
And guess what image is used to frame the opening scene. That's right: the tweet that Team Barry sent out.
I'm embedding the ad..check it for yourself:
Now the content of the ad is awesome, and it makes for a great "closing argument." You should e-mail it around to all your friends to make sure it's seen. But I want to talk about it for another reason.
I want to talk about it because it's a punking on a national scale.
Over the weekend, I discussed this ad on Twitter with @dawinship. I pointed out the use of the tweet, and Doug suggested it was an Easter Egg planted by Team Romney to appeal to those of us who obsess over this kind of stuff.
He's partially right. But it's also something else: it's a direct shot by Team Romney across Team Barry's bow. It's Team Romney saying: "No matter what you try in this campaign, Mr. President, we can and will use it to defeat you. No matter what assets you think you have, we can and will make them our own."
It's basically the Romney Campaign telling the Obama folks "All your base are belong to us."
It's ballsy and it's brassy, and you can be certain that the folks in Chicago noticed its inclusion. And you can also be certain that, for a team with a candidate who CAN NOT TAKE RIDICULE, it's in their heads.
It's the kind of stuff that a winning campaign does. And it reminded me of a great story I wanted to share.
One of my dearest friends relayed a story to me about a GOP campaign on which he once worked. The GOP candidate discovered that his Dem opponent was receiving laundered campaign contributions from a labor union with mob ties. The GOP campaign decided to make the Democrat's use of "mob money" an issue in the closing days.
The GOP candidate decided to call a morning press conference in which all the sordid details were to be exposed. The evening before the presser, the GOP campaign manager did something interesting.
He asked one of the volunteers to deliver a package to the Dem campaign team.
The package consisted of one manila envelope. And inside the envelope? A video-cassette of the movie "The Godfather".
The day of the press conference, another video gets sent over. This time it was "Goodfellas".
For one week following the press conference, at the end of every day the GOP campaign manager sent a mafia themed movie over to the Dem Campiagn manager.
Why?
Mind games. Taunting. Living rent-free inside the oppositions head. It conveys a tactical advantage, and it's important. Oh, and by the way, the GOP'er won a close race too.
It's like Foreigner said "if you want to win you gotta learn to play Head Games."
If you dig classic rock and roll, or even Foreigner, feel free to follow me on Twitter. I'm @jackmcoldcuts.

When I worked on a congressional campaign a long time ago, the manager said he was going to dress up in a chicken suit and stand outside the opponent's office because he refused to debate.
Stupid, I thought, because that's all he had. Media thought so too and mocked him for it. So like you say if you're winning, it's great! If not, you look like ... an empty chair, or an empty chicken suit.

1. Does he become a rallying cry martyr?
or
2. Does he go back to being a mulatto who's not one of us?
My prediction:
First - RACISM!!!! x 11ty7 on all MFM outlets until the end of the year. There couldn't possibly any other reason why.
Second - the black community will eventually drop the racism stupidity and go with "epic failure" because he conned them all.

I heard an obama commercial whining about health insurance and how Mitt removed the mandatory child insurance law in MA on two radio stations within a half hour of each other. I live in Wisconsin so he is starting to push harder here.
Not sure what else they whined about because as soon as I realized what it was I switched stations.

Prepare for at the minimum, 16 years of Republican Presidents.
Now if we can only get the House and the Senate for that long, we could repair this country!!

After the primaries he couldn't access a lot of money until the conventions. So he put what money he did have into GOTV organizations.
Then he held his fire until the last month. The debate helped, but I think this has been planned. And I think he was prepared to debate and that wasn't a fluke.
Love this head fake!

Errm, not ALL of us, although I confess to being a bit concerned a few times. However, the proof is in the pudding. And yes, I chose that medium deliberately. This has been a textbook example of developing a strategy, implementing it, and making adjustments as needed.

Your rant on the Greatest Generation on the last thread had some good points. One miss was bringing up Social Security as a knock on the GG. My Dad fought in WWII. SS act passed in 1935, when he was 8 years old. So I think the generation prior to the GG has to take responsibility for SS, no?

I love that tweet. So indicative of Obama's juvenile obsession with the trappings of his office and not with actually doing the damn job. His entire campaign this year is one more reminiscent of a campaign for a high school student council president than one for President of the United States.
Some people run for President to Be Somebody. Our best Presidents have been those who already were Somebody and ran for President to Do Something. (TR, Ike, Reagan.) This was always the big secret of Ronald Reagan's success in my opinion. He already was Somebody. So is Mitt Romney. Barack Obama is clearly in the ranks of those who ran to Be Somebody.

Plenty of the people alive in 1935 and old enough to vote were involved in WWII and into the '60's.
My parents for one, my uncles for others.
Besides they may have had no say on SS but they did on Medicare and Johnson's war on poverty.
Him and Jack Kennedy were elected by them. They influenced the course of the country for many years after and lead to a Democrat controlled House for 40 years.
It's not just SS and Medicare that's choking us now. It's laws and attitudes formed in the '50's, '60's and 70's also.

This isn't as much of a closing argument as an opening. Not just street interviews on comedy shows, or Obama on Letterman, but people I know here simply don't know the basic facts about the debt, economy, or Obama's actual legislation and plans. I mean educated professionals who do things like depend on NBC for news.
Political ads for Republicans should be as much about rebutting false media narratives on basic facts as anything else. To do so quickly on critical points as that ad does makes it the best for Romney I've seen this cycle, and I've seen them all living here. Of course some Internet only ads were as good, but those don't count.

I had a lot of Obamas in class. They sat in the front of the room, posed long eloquent questions, mellifluously interrupted the lectures with clever refinements and qualifications, often self-referenced all that they had read and done — and then pow!: you grade their first test and there is simply nothing there: a D or F. It was quite stunning: how could a student be so confident in his rhetoric and so dismal in his performance?

Unlike their more conservative cohorts, these women agreed that abortion is not any of the federal government's business. But they also didn't believe abortion rights were on the line in the coming election. "It has never changed," Zebib said. "We've had pro-life presidents many times, and it didn't change. It's a bumper sticker. They try to divert our attention." Eileen touched her friend's arm. "Most women I know, whether they're for Obama or Romney, they feel the same thing," she said. "It's a distraction. That whole Gloria Steinem thing is old."

Individual black people will certainly realized that they've been bamboozled by Choom Boy and will work for themselves instead of expecting Teh Gubmint to give them 'sclades, big-screens and lotsa free stuffs. Many already do, though you don't hear from them.
But the "black community" will whine until long after we're all dead and buried about how racists lynched President Historic First©. It's The Man Oppressing the People.
Big Al and Rolex Jesse (senior) have been singin' the same sad old song for so many years now that the "community" has it burned into their collective mind.

I sat down with her on the sofa and (as calmly as I could) tried to explain to her why the Republicans want the toilets of African Americans to overflow on Election Day. I tried to keep my voice steady, but it became increasingly difficult - the rage and feelings of helplessness were just too much. She could tell something was wrong. I found myself at such a loss for words - nothing made any sense; nothing makes sense anymore. I finally had to admit, " I just don't know - I don't know what's going on in this country anymore..."
When I finished her lower lip started to tremble and her eyes began to fill with tears, "Mommy" she said, "why are the Republicans doing this to the country?" Well, that was it for me: I finally fell apart. I just fell into her arms and we both began sobbing for several minutes. She had to comfort me and get me back on my feet. Sometimes I just think itÂ’s too much, but seeing the strength in my daughters voice helped me to get through.

That's the main thrust. There's a lot of reasons for that no being the case and I only mentioned a few.
Plus where does a generation start and stop.
Some label babies born from 1940 to 1960 as boomers. I've always felt it was about a ten year window that started after D-Day. That was when the births dramatically increased. Yeah the folks who were in WWII were still having babies in the '60's but they weren't a reaction to the ending of the war. They were in response to our prosperity.
And yes, we do have to shoulder some blame for Obama. We let McCain get elected when we knew he was a loser. We failed. We may have had help and there may not have been much we could've done but it was OUR responsibility and we blew it.

I guess you'll have to take it up with Brokaw then. Boomers are usually placed as born between 1946 and 1964, btw. I don't know who made that decision.
I like having my parents called the GG, so I cancel you out. ;D

SS was set up to be a welfare scheme. I told a left-leaning friend a few days ago: "Social Security is solvent only as long as the Baby Boomers are working. As soon as they retire, it goes bankrupt. Why should you get a health insurance policy from the govt. on your 65th birthday that's worth over $1,000 per month? It's just too generous. We cannot afford it."

In 1984, this is when I knew Reagan had it in the bag. The WaPo issued a "no endorsement" endorsement. If they do that this year, we are looking at Truman's 40 state landslide.

As to Cali, I think the Dems are out of money and so are using it in swing states. This bodes well for Cali--maybe Dems will stay home and we can end the union deductions in paychecks and the tax increases.
Fingers crossed.
