In Iowa Paper, Perot Backs Romney
— Ace

Helpful. I think Perot's still got some sway with crotchety types (i.e., disillusioned conservative-leaning independents).

erot accuses Obama of shouldering the nation with unsustainable debt: “In the last four years during Obama’s presidency, he’s added around $5 trillion to our national debt, more than any previous president.

“It is this massive deficit spending that threatens to undermine our future standard of living,” he adds.

But the Texas businessman cautioned that efforts to rein government spending should not weaken the nation’s military. “Even as we have engaged in runaway domestic spending, the country has been put on the path to massive cuts in the defense budget.

“History teaches that the price of military weakness always exceeds the price of preparedness,” Perot continues. “And yet at a moment when turbulence is sweeping critical regions of the world, we are increasingly unprepared.”

Meanwhile, in a local Iowa paper, thirteen Iowans take out a full-page ad to apologize for voting for Obama in 2008, throwing their support to Romney.

Meanwhile, in Iowa, Obama is talking about wind, and how women make good teachers.

Posted by: Jones in CO at October 17, 2012 11:53 AM (8sCoq)

39 Yet one more contrast between the two. Last night, despite the "binders full of women" phrasing oddness, Romney talked about finding women for his own cabinet and staff. Per commenters in other threads today, Mitt's cabinet was something like 50% women... Today, the President is talking about how women "make good teachers." And, of course, there's that whole "women working at the WH make less than their male counterparts" thing.

70 I guess the goal of Romney soft sell campaign is to pick up the disillusioned Obama voter, meaning no red meat for conservatives. HRperot is a nice get in that respect. I suppose we cons can find red meat in Mitt's actual website where he talks policy, like reducing spending to at least 2008 levels. A problem with the soft sell is that once Romney goes full bore into fixing Obama's clusterfuckery, DNC can pull what they tried with Scott Walker, arguing that Romney never ran on those issues.

105 Romney's been a public figure for many years. If there was something on him, there would have been something on him by now.

that's what I think too

They also have to drop anything before November 2.

You see, there will be job numbers coming out then and if Obama did what I think he did, they ought to be "adjusted" by then and there won't be any time to talk about anything else.

106 Yeah, Perot is a little nuts, and yeah, he did cost George Bush Sr. the election, but you can't help but admire him if you've ever read Ken Follet's "On Wings of Eagles".  Perot basically took responsibility for the rescue of his employees when they became "guests" of Iranian revolutionaries and got all his people safely out of there.  Not too long after that, the U.S. Embassy was overrun, and Jimmy Carter was unable to do the same.  Perot has big, brass ones.  Glad to see that he is endorsing Romney.

135 Slate's John Dickerson calls out O on Libya http://tinyurl.com/bp6dk9y The president's tall tales came during a debate over Libya. The administration’s story is changing almost daily about what happened, who knew what when, and who is going to take responsibility for it. The topic presents political peril for the president. He effectively took command, saying that all responsibility rested with him and that he would get to the bottom of who killed the four Americans, including the ambassador. He criticized Romney for using the issue to score political points and took umbrage at the suggestion that anyone in his administration would act politically. Then, he proceeded to act politically. That is, if you define acting politically as suggesting something that isn't true is true for the purpose of saving your job. Obama said, "The day after the attack, governor, I stood in the Rose Garden and I told the American people ... that this was an act of terror." Obama was trying to suggest that he had declared this a terrorist attack long before his administration actually did. For days and days afterward, administration officials would not claim it was a terrorist attack. U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice famously refused to call it such on Face the Nation. The president was trying to reset the timeline. If you look at the president's statement in the Rose Garden, he does use that phrase, but it's a throwaway cliché. Indeed, it arguably wasn't about the attack at all, just a bromide about more general acts of terror. In any event, the president buried the lead in the tenth paragraph of his remarks. That's why none of the papers at the time reported that he had characterized any part of the attack as having to do with terrorism. When Romney called him on it, the president wouldn’t answer. “Please proceed, governor,” he said, as if he were the moderator and not the fellow who was being called out. It was the verbal equivalent of putting your hands over your eyes and pretending no one will see you.

202 I just "got" why the Dems are running with "Big Bird" and "binders."

They.  Don't.  Get.  It.

How many times over the last couple of years (including this summer) did Obama say something truly stupid which gave a wonderful, concise, and representative soundbite?  "You didn't build that."  "More flexible."  And so on?

And every time he'd get pummeled because of it.

I think they really deluded themselves into believing that Republicans had taken those lines "out of context" and that it was the soundbites themselves, instead of the ideas they represented, that were the bludgeons.

So they think they have these winning soundbites with Big Bird and binders, and they run with that, never realizing that the point of snappy soundbites is to make people look up the context- which, in this case, truly does favor Mitt Romney.

234 "Barack Obama the communist"
Oct. 16, 2012 Exclusive:
Christopher Monckton of Brenchley on how BHO fits definition to a "T"

Communists believe big businesses should be owned by the State. Obama believes that. One of the biggest businesses of the lot is health care. He has nationalized it.

Communists believe any businesses that escape outright State ownership should – in a mendacious proxy for ownership – be regulated down to the tiniest light bulb. Obama believes that.
...
The coming crisis of communism is this: “Socialism is all very well until other people’s money runs out” (M. Thatcher). In America, as in Britain and other vassal states of the anti-democratic European tyranny-by-clerk, other people’s money has run out. The vicarious sweetie-auction using other people’s money that is the usual substitute for genuine political debate is dangerously unaffordable.

America is going down. The central failure of the Republicans – some of whom understand the size of the debt problem – is that they have not found the courage to confront it and squarely to admit that those who pay taxes will have to pay more and those who get sweeties will have to get less, that the budget must be balanced immediately, all debt to China and other alien regimes repaid, your nation’s sovereignty restored, and national bankruptcy and collapse pre-empted.

As Cicero once wrote, “The arrogance of the State must be tempered, its spending curtailed, and its revenues increased, lest it become bankrupt.” But then, Cicero was no communist.

And, of course, the one scenario in which they tie at 269.

261 I think there's an out in there if less than 270 EVs worth of states have such rules in place.

If no candidate reaches 270 EV, the House of Representatives elects the president, and the Senate elects the VP.

For the House, the winner is determined by state contingent vote, not individual representative.  If it were a 269-269 tie (it is possible), the House would vote... and Romney would almost certainly win.

It would also open the possibility of Romney winning the presidency and Obama being his VP.

262 Instead TFG and Candy made themselves look like asses again.

And, the whole Benghazi thing has been pre-fact-checked.  They can't contradict the "facts" from the second debate.

Honestly, I don't know why Obama did any debates at all.  Arrogance, I guess. I don't think he'll skip the last one.

But he should.

263 >>It would also open the possibility of Romney winning the presidency and Obama being his VP. Works for me. Romney could put Obama in charge of all the things he is qualified to do. Nothing. And the humiliation factor for Obama would keep me warm through the next ice age.

Don't agree.  I'll refer you to WZ and the post about the assassination tweets.  Mitt wouldn't be able to leave the WH.

The original post was asking about the inter-state compact to give EVs to the candidate who won the popular vote, which is a Dem tactic to get around the fact that there are huge parts of the country they'll never win again at this rate.

266 During the debate last night, my 10 year old daughter asked me "why does Obama say 'uhh' so much?" LOL! I told her it's because he's so darned stupid!

267 I have been saying this for over a year. Moochelle will be announcing that she is in a "family way". They will fake a pregnancy, complete with "sympathy belly".  Posted by: runningrn at October 17, 2012 04:11 PM (WGmy2)

So sorry to quibble, but, they do not have to fake the belly, just remove the SPANXX and let the blubber run free.  As to winning a few sympathy votes, it might, but, the two kids they have are not the least bit winsome.  The oldest one needs something done about theat mustache--surely Beyonce or Oprah could clue Moochillini into a good dermatology practice that makes house calls.  Right now, most folks without a job or any savings are too worried about their own kids to stop and tear up about another obama git.

268 It really looks like the right has turned that corner this time around or that the liberals' internet mojo was a myth to begin with.  Posted by: Soona at October 17, 2012 04:43 PM (ukzZb)

It was a myth, largely based on the fact that they had more of a clue about social media than McCain did.  But ever since Sarah Palin began to put out substantive posts on relevant issues on FB, everyone in the DNC camp got quiet about Internet skillz.  To get real Internet savvy, you have to pay for it.  For goodness sake, everyone knows that the Taupe Dope has a shill that handles his Twitter feed.

269 Yes, that's what my point was. Those blue firewall states have already passed laws that commands the electoral votes to be assigned to the winner of the Popular Vote regardless of the state's result for either candidates. So my point is if Romney wins the popular vote and states that are critical to his electoral votes breaking the 270 limit, does he also pick up the blue states racking up his electoral vote total?

270 If I hear one more comment from the Left and TFG about how my ladyparts make me fit for the caring, nurturing professions, I'm going to have to punch a kindergarten teacher in the face.

INTP here.

Did you know that INTPs are more likely to be bi-polar than other types of personalities?

No shit!

Being a female INTP and having people expect you to be a genteel Southern lady your whole life will make you nuts.

Then again, INTP and bi-polar disorder share a lot of traits.

271 So we're talking 132 electoral votes that would be Obama's. However if the laws were taken into consideration, Obama's "firewall" is actually whittled down to 162 electoral votes while Romney just sucks up the rest (402 electoral votes) regardless of the Blue Firewall results.
