In Which I Prostrate Myself Before You And Beg

This election isn't over. Despite Romney's small lead in the national polls, he's down, tied or narrowly up in the swing states that matter. Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Colorado.

The election is next Tuesday. Next Tuesday! Can you believe it? You've been waiting for this moment since January 2009. You've been counting down the days. Now I ask you, what are you doing to help Mitt Romney?

If you are in one of the aforementioned states, then you have to volunteer. Hate making phone calls? Hate going door to door? Hate giving rides to people you don't know? Well, do you hate those things more or less than another four years of Barack Obama? A liberal Supreme Court for the next 20-30 years? A Barack Obama free from the constraints of running for re-election ever again?

I can only guess at your answer. If you can't take off election day, then volunteer at a local victory center in this last week of the campaign. You can find them here. Just click your state to find the nearest Victory Center. They are normally open seven days a week from 9am to 9pm. Show up. Make phone calls. Ask them if there is anything else you can do. They might be able to hook you up with a group doing door to door work. They may ask you to drive people to the polls on election day. If you don't get off work until 5pm, then drive people to the polls between 5:30 and 8:00.

You can make phone calls from home if you don't want to travel to a victory center. You can do so here.
Your volunteer work makes a difference. In 2004 George Bush won Iowa by 10,000 votes. If there are 1,000 precincts in Iowa, then that means George Bush got 10 extra voters to each precinct to win that election. You can drive 10 people to the polls, can't you? You can convince 10 people who otherwise weren't going to vote, can't you? You can convince 10 lazy registered Republicans to show up on election day, can't you? That's all you need to do to help Mitt Romney win the election. Our small contributions add up.

If you can take off election day(or a half day), then please consider signing up to work as a poll watcher. Sign up here. You can work the morning shift or the afternoon/evening shift. Once you sign up, they will send you an e-mail with a training video. They will mail you out a packet with the information you need and assign you to a polling place.

You will show up at that polling place on election day and work a strike list. A strike list is nothing more than a list all of the registered Republicans at the precinct you're working at. Strike lists are electronic now. so you'll need to take your smart phone or tablet. They will have you download an app that has three components.

One, the strike list which will allow you to mark off people as they come in and vote. Two, a "problems" option that lets you report problems such as fraud or that the democrats are trying to kick you out of the polling place. The Romney campaign has lawyers on standby for this. Three, a simple communication option. It allows you to send messages and observations to Romney's command center. For example, if the workers at the polling station say they've never seen it this busy before, then you should pass that along to the Romney HQ.

What happens when you mark a name off the strike list? It instantly updates the lists at the Romney command center where they have phone banks of people making calls. If someone shows up to vote, their name is off the list and they don't receive phone calls on election day asking them to vote. This is how we get out the vote. We call registered Republicans all day on election day until they vote.

Those are your options if you want to help defeat Barack Obama. Those of you living in Virginia, Ohio, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Michigan, or Wisconsin should be volunteering. The fate of this election could depend on people like you. God forbid you wake up November 7th and see that Obama won because he got 4-5,000 more votes than Romney in Ohio.

Obamacare, the Supreme Court, the Middle East, energy production, food prices, inflation, Medicare insolvency, American insolvency....There is so much at stake in this election.

I'd like to end this plea with a few lines from one of my favorite speeches.

...and in so doing lose this way of freedom of ours, history will record with the greatest astonishment that those who had the most to lose did the least to prevent its happening. Well I think it's time we ask ourselves if we still know the freedoms that were intended for us by the Founding Fathers.

Not too long ago, two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, "We don't know how lucky we are." And the Cuban stopped and said, "How lucky you are? I had someplace to escape to." And in that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth.

And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except the sovereign people, is still the newest and the most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man.

This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capitol can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.

If you are in a non-swing state and sign up using the link in the sidebar, then they may not contact you. I'm guessing that they are focusing their resouces on Project ORCA for swing states.

 

If you live in a light red state, then show up at your local victory center. Your state may already go for Romney, but we need to win the down state races as well.

I was going to drive people to the polls but she expressed a great deal of concern that I would be driving around strangers. I'll admit, I never thought about that. Internets persona aside, I am a five foot nothing girl who is shall we say on the zaftig side. It would not be horribly difficult to overpower me and I don't want to get nailed for bringing a weapon to a polling place. I hate being paranoid but, sadly, I have to think of these things. Those of you working with the Romney campaign, what's the protocol in place for that issue? I know they will have thought it through.

That aside, we've reached a cross the Rubicon moment not only for the country at large (of which they'll largely be insouciant) and they media but perhaps most significantly for the conservative chattering classes. The one major unknown relative to this election cycle is how many conservatives and erstwhile conservative poseurs will sit out the election. A million? Two million? Of course if Romney wins it quite literally won't matter, at least not until 2016. But if Romney loses it actually will destroy the country's entire future. Scary, huh?

62 Good advice.   I think Romney's people are overwhelmed by volunteers.  Except for Truman North, I don't know anyone that is going to Boston.


I have emailed state and local people, and they all say go to your local office they will put you to work.  Our local office looks like they are giving something away, you can not get in the building.  They do have tons of stuff, signs, etc. 

What is best in life?       We win again!

99 I signed up a week ago.  I got a phone call this weekend.  The caller left a very polite voice mail explaining that I needed to participate in either online training (he said that an e-mail with the details would come some time today) or via a scheduled teleconference.  I'm going to attend the teleconference tonight for the training.  I have an iPhone, so I'm hoping I'll be one of the poll watchers.  We'll see how it all sorts out.  I've also volunteered to help CAC with the big election night thingy.  So, pretty much I'll be doing GOTV during the day, then helping add up the votes in the evening.

I don't know what the laws are in your state but in my state one of the few places you can't carry if you're licensed to carry is anywhere near a polling place. I forget the exact number of feet away from the polling place that entails since I don't bring weapons with me, in the car or on my person, when I go to vote.

 

So Alex? If security is a big concern, don't do it. Make calls instead, or go knock on doors with a group of good people.

(CCW). They don't let you have guns in polling places. After signing up to volunteer I finally heard back last week (didn't know where to go).  Made calls during the weeknights & door-to-door on weekends.  Same thing this week, too.  Much to my surprise, it was fun and everyone was super-nice.

We need people on the ground more than ever, but the best way to get people motivated is to remind them what a fantastic pair of candidates we have this election. Some of us were too young to ever vote for a truly historic figure like Reagan (Obama's sole claim to fame is being the first Affirmative Action President) but now we have the chance in Romney. There's no doubt in my mind that Christmas came early for conservatives; we'd been lamenting for years about our terrible candidates and consigned ourselves that we'd never get another Reagan and that the best we could hope for were "compassionate conservatives" who wouldn't screw up the economy too badly. Now we have the chance to elect someone whom I have no doubt in my mind will be just as fondly remembered years after he leaves office. This, more than any fear over a second term of the most disastrous president in over a century, is what will get people out. We can't just be afraid of what might happen, we have to be motivated *for* our candidate. (Not to the cult level of Obamamania, of course. I already have a perfectly good Savior, thank you kindly) This time around, we can actually like the man we're voting for. Cheerleading might feel awful cheesy, but why argue with success?

193 #197...just show up! That's what I did 4 years ago. Hey, I hated the thought of phone banking, but plugged away at it most mornings after Palin was added to the ticket (I was a like minded mom ). Phone banking on quiet mornings was hard, but if you can go in when its a full house its a lot of fun! I met some pretty neat people. Election day was crazy and exciting. My toddler was under my desk watching DVDs while I prodded people to get to the polls. The day didn't end as I had imagined, but going in and helping was a memory I will never forget. I'm living back in Canada now and can't help this time, but encourage other people to have the same experience...but with a different ending this year!!

195 I worked in a phone bank on Election Eve 2010, making phone calls for a local state assemblyman.  We were only calling registered Republicans.  Got one lady who said (not sure I believe her, but this is what she said) that she was so disgusted by all of the calls she had gotten for Our Guy that because of my call, she was now going to vote for The Other Guy.


I hope she was just yanking my chain... but I'll never know.  And, BTW, Our Guy did not win.  :-(  However, he is running again this time.

No dough and living in a midnight blue part of deep blue CA, there is zero I can do to affect the election beyond state and local ballot measures. At some point (10 year or less) I'll move out and into some swing state where my vote will actually matter.
