— DrewM Mitt Romney's statement today on the attacks in Libya and Egypt was spot on.
After first express grief at the loss of American life, Romney framed the issue exactly right.
“America will not tolerate attacks against our citizens and against our embassies. We will defend also our constitutional rights of speech and assembly and religion. We have confidence in our cause in America. We respect our Constitution. We stand for the principles our Constitution protects. We encourage other nations to understand and respect the principles of our Constitution because we recognize that these principles are the ultimate source of freedom for individuals around the world.“I also believe the Administration was wrong to stand by a statement sympathizing with those who had breached our embassy in Egypt instead of condemning their actions. It's never too early for the United States Government to condemn attacks on Americans, and to defend our values. The White House distanced itself last night from the statement, saying it wasn't ‘cleared by Washington.’ That reflects the mixed signals they’re sending to the world.
“The attacks in Libya and Egypt underscore that the world remains a dangerous place and that American leadership is still sorely needed. In the face of this violence, America cannot shrink from the responsibility to lead. American leadership is necessary to ensure that events in the region don’t spin out of control. We cannot hesitate to use our influence in the region to support those who share our values and our interests. Over the last several years, we have stood witness to an Arab Spring that presents an opportunity for a more peaceful and prosperous region, but also poses the potential for peril, if the forces of extremism and violence are allowed to control the course of events.
“We must strive to ensure that the Arab Spring does not become an Arab Winter.”
Go to the PJ Tatter to see the pitiful questions Romney was asked. Almost all of them were attacks on the timing of his statement last night.
Compare that with Obama who said in part...
Appearing with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in the White House Rose Garden, Obama said: “We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others, but there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal attacks.”
The President of the United States of America should not "reject" a citizens right to speak however he or she wants even (or especially) if it offends someone. A President who prioritizes the feelings of foreigners over a strong, unequivocal defense of an American citizen's exercise of our fundamental freedom is unfit for office.
Of course this is unsurprising coming from a President who made this outrageous claim in his much vaunted speech in Cairo.
"That experience guides my conviction that partnership between America and Islam must be based on what Islam is, not what it isn't. And I consider it part of my responsibility as president of the United States to fight against negative stereotypes of Islam wherever they appear," Obama said to applause. He said neither Muslims nor Americans, though, can fit the "crude stereotype" they are sometimes assigned.
Speaking of Cairo, I watched Obama live and I didn't hear him mention the embassy attack at all.
Naturally, the maker of the film that is the supposed flash point of this exercise in outrage is in hiding. Obama had no kind words of support for him.
I'm a "clash of civilizations" guy. The military fight against Islam will flare up and cool down as it has for centuries but we must always be fighting for our view of the world and our rights. I don't care how Muslim societies organize themselves but I'll be damned if I'll give them a veto over how we organize ours.
We need a President who gets this and believe it or not, that's Mitt Romney.
Added: Next time John McCain says we need to intervene in Syria remember this day. Nothing good will come of it. Let's arm both sides and keep them fighting and dying as long as possible. US foreign policy has to be about what's in OUR interests, not what's nice for people who don't know how to live in the civilized world.

To "unequivocally reject"...? Then why equivocate in the first sentence? You went out of your way to acknowledge that this fine, fine religion was 'denigrated.' What does a dog whisle sound like in Arabic?
Also, you don't "reject" insults to any religion, or "encourage" them. The U.S. government is constitutionally neutral on such speech.

Too bad all those decades of puffing choom have softened his brain to the extent that he cannot recognize the difference between truth and the America-hating revolutionary rhetoric he has been fed almost since birth.
If the traitors and eunuchs who fill Congress, the State Department and the White House could somehow be made to understand reality as opposed to the fantasyland in which they currently dwell, Air Force assets would already be doing their job in Cairo and Benghazi. Of course the Traitor-in-Chief would have been removed from office....
This makes me almost wish for the use of nukes in the ME. One plane can do the job that would put tens of thousands of ground troops at risk. I do not wish to see another American life sacrificed in the name of kinder, gentler warfare.

What part of "Freedom of Speech" is so hard to understand?
As someone else said, "This comes from the same fucking type of people that funded "Piss Christ?"
Run with this Romney.
The media and the JEF are trying to wipe the blood of the Ambassador on their shirts to sanctify their feckless response to an attack on OUR freedom of speech.
They want to prop his body up as a shield to foil any criticism of their mendacity and stupidity.
And they are still--STILL--attacking our right to free speech.
Fuck them.

It is inconceivable to me that we did not have a high level of security at the embassies with September 11 approaching, not to mention the call for revenge from AL Zawalhari over the death of the number 2 guy in Yemen, who just happened to be Libyan.
Obama confirmed this in his statement this morning, saying that he was NOW increasing security at all embassies in the area. Why just now? Why were they asleep at the switch? And also, why did he act yesterday, in his speech at the Pentagon, that the threat from Al Qaeda was over?

Until we have politicians willing to say Islam is not a religion of peace (like Reagan called the Soviet Union an evil empire), we shall never be safe.

The news said "americans", and did not indicate they were marines.
Were they infact 2 marines?
I am holding off another pokemon-like-evolution of my rage until confirmation of this?
If 2 marines died, and none of the embassy stormers died, then they did not fight back? In my experience of marines, there is only 1 reason they do not fight back.
Following orders.

Really? Really? So they reject 60% of fiction books, movies and tv shows, 90% of Broadway shows, 100% of off-Broadway shows, the entire public education system, the entire university system, the NY Times, the Washington Post, etc?
And that's just with the word "all." Even if the quote said "some" it would be in grave error. The United States Government has no right or power to reject "ANY" effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others.

There could have been an Arab Spring if there was a country willing to stand for individual rights, free speech and freedom in general. Too bad there wasn't one available at the time.
We did this so well in the Cold War that Poland and Czechloslovakia have better governance in terms of freedom than we do (not that circumstances haven't otherwise screwed them as usual). Iran was the first and best chance for a "velvet" MidEast revolution and Obama screwed that pooch (or ate it ?). After that, the Muslim Brotherhood figured "the world" (as they know it) "is mine !"

In the past I've made the same comparison. The Japanese in WWII saw it as the height of honor to die for the Emperor. Then we nuked the ever-living fuck out of two of their cities, and they didn't want to do that anymore.

Time to hear from the American Muslims. Like right now. Condemn this is the strongest terms possible within the next 24 hours, or my suggestion is that you head to the border with Canada.
American Muslim leaders have NEVER condemned any muslim atrocity in the strongest terms possible, other than simply saying "We condemn the ______ attack in the strongest terms possible." (Any time a politician/group has to say the word "condemn" to show they are condemning something, though quite common, it reveals a lack on sincerity to me.)
These leaders should be spending their time spreading the message that U.S. is a good and decent country. It would have more impact than any Western puffery. But they don't. And it does not go unnoticed that they don't.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The share of Americans living in poverty last year held steady after three years of hefty increases, according to government data released on Wednesday that could ease pressure on President Barack Obama as he seeks reelection in November.
The Census Bureau said the 2011 poverty rate was 15 percent, statistically unchanged from 15.1 percent in 2010. About 46.2 million Americans were living in poverty, little changed from the prior year.
Still, data from the Census Bureau also showed the 2011 median U.S. income declined 1.5 percent from 2010.

Wanis al-Sharef, a Libyan Interior Ministry official in Benghazi, said the four Americans were killed when the angry mob, which gathered to protest a U.S.-made film that ridicules IslamÂ’s Prophet Muhammad, fired guns and burned down the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.
He said Stevens, 52, and other officials were moved to a second building, deemed safer, after the initial wave of protests at the consulate. According to al-Sharef, members of the Libyan security team seem to have indicated to the protesters the building to which the American officials had been relocated, and that building then came under attack.

I'd talk about how refreshing it is to hear a commentary by a politician that's - shall we say - "normal", where the victims are recognized first, the guilty parties are condemned, second, and Constitutionally-protected actions by their own people are not commented on. But at this point I'm not even sure what the hell the President and Secy of State actually said.
I've heard that the initial statement was from the Egyptian ambassador, herself, and I saw Bolton talk about this and his read on that was that the embassador was likely speaking without clearing it with the WH. Then I heard that the WH distanced itself from it. But it also seems they might be saying pretty much the same thing as the embassador anyway. So I'm confused.

The U.S. Air Force has 94 operational B-52 bombers. Each B-52 bomber can carry 35 Mk 84 2,000 lb. bombs. The blast radius of a Mk 84 bomb is 400 yards. The Benghazi area is 314 square kilometers. Assume that the bomb load of each B-52 bomber can evenly dispersed so that the bomb radii do not overlap. Also assume that each B-52 is deployable on every sortie and each B-52 will carry a maximum bomb load on each sortie.
How many B-52 force sorties must be launched by the U.S. Air Force in order to destroy Benghazi?

Some insight I got last night was that the Marine detail is there to secure the national security information, not to secure the grounds. That responsibility falls on the Egyptians. Certainly we would be within our rights to defend our ground, but that would probably be a suicide mission - they probably have an insufficient force for that. There are cases where our military are given ridiculous orders that unnecessarily risks their lives, but I'm not sure this is one of them.

No, it's not. It's a violent death cult that is bent on taking over the world. That is all it has ever been. Christians didn't start the violence that came to be called "The Crusades," Muslims did. And it didn't take Christianity 700 years to figure out they shouldn't kill people for not believing like we do. It didn't take them 70 minutes to figure that out.
No, they're not a "young, insecure religion," they're a death cult.

From planet opposite world (aka Kos):
The irony is the protestors in Libya/Egypt.. are the same mind-set and motivation as the Republicans in the U.S.
The protestors heard a rumor that a "movie" was produced in the U.S that blasphemed Mohammed and reacted on that rumor and without facts or details.
In their minds, Hollywood, with the backing of the US government deliberately went out of their way to insult and abuse Islam.
This is exactly the type of thinking that infects the GOP today. The Right reacts to rumors, false stories, out right lies without details or facts. They continue to rehash long discredited stories and react to them as if they were true. And they continue to threaten violence as a legitimate response.
The birther nonsense, the "partial birth abortion" BS, Solyndra, "gutting work-to-welfare"; the list is almost endless.
I also find it ironic that no where in Romney's criticism of the attacks, did he condemn the attackers or the people who set them off with their stupid video.

I was worried that Ras was showing so much of a lead for Obama. I trust Ras against Ras. The best way to measure a poll is to judge it against itself. Good polling outfits may get the number wrong, but they'll measure the trend.
Even Gallup was OK before Obama sued them.

But hey, there's really no way of knowing for sure, is there? His mother was quite young when she married Alois Hitler, who was by then himself in late middle age, and by all accounts a thoroughly unlikeable, domineering, abusive asshole. No one could blame her for checking out some of the younger, local action. One of them might've been Jewish. I sure hope so.
Posted by: troyriser at September 12, 2012 08:41 AM (vtiE6)
Are you seriously trying to draw moral equivalency between Christianity and Islam? Seriously? Just stop, before you hurt yourself.
Christians never embarked on genocidal wars. The Romans hated Christians for a host of reasons, among them the same one for which a man renamed Daniel was thrown in a pit with lions, and his buddies (similarly renamed) were thrown into furnace. Christianity does not teach conversion by the sword, and Christ repeatedly rejected attempts to set up an earthly kingdom for Himself. And he certainly never buggered children.
Islam, on the other hand, was established by a man who used it to help him conquer territory. It claims that anyone who does not believe should be converted or killed. It believes that they are the rightful rulers of the world. Within a century of its founding, Islam began killing Jews and Christians whose families had lived in the Holy Land since before Islam was a religion. The took great pleasure in killing pilgrims, including women and children.
And as for young? How long should it take them to figure out to play nicely with others? I'm thinking 700+ years is more than enough.
As for "not all Muslims," I've got news for you: by not speaking out, they're implicitly siding with their brethren who just murdered our ambassador. Moreover, since their book is the one preaching conversion by the sword and world domination, I'd say the ones who don't believe in that are much like Christians who don't believe in preaching salvation.
I'm not saying we should kill every Muslim we find just because they're Muslim, but pretending Islam is something it isn't is what leads to things like what happened in Cairo and Benghazi, as well as the "follow up protests" that have begun today.

FFS Allen, where do you get an equivalency from one analogy ? I don't think my comments fail to express my dark view of Islam or my Christian sympathies. Stop acting like an "outraged" Muz just because I used Christianity as an example. You make their arguments for them that way. Christianity is the best role model for Muslims to eventually emulate. We've reconciled (arguably over-reconciled, but that's another post) our faith with a relatively free society. If you think I'm criticizing Christianity, you're looking for a fight that isn't there.
We're on the same side, people.

Utter nonsense. Islam was once the religion of enlightened empires. Riches and learning the envy of the world. Its leaders honorable men who commanded the respect of even their most ardent Christian foes. And then, in the 20th century, the violent and intolerant factions within fundamentalist Islam took over once and for all, and they've been in charge ever since. They are not misguided youths, and your patronizing condescension won't make it so.

458 - have you even read the Koran ? Mohammed was the original intolerant bastard. The succeeding Caliphs weren't exactly choirboys either. So it "got better" after him, then "got worse" again ?
You're selling the "Golden Age" Andalusian delusion in that comment. It's bullshit. Ask a dhimmi who lived in Spain how that worked out during the "Golden Age." It's been about a millenia since Islam as a culture had a signicant contribution to science, culture, or about anything else involved with civilized life. Stop cruising on fumes. That dog won't hunt anymore.
