— Ace I say rumors because, like, it's just getting started. I don't know when the results come in.
At 9pm Eastern I'll join the Howe brothers on a live-streamed podcast at FTRRadio. (Link should be is fixed.)
By the way, our own Russ From Winterset is caucusing tonight, and he'll file a first-person report later, at around 11.
County By County: Neat tool. Not really sure how to read it, but Google has a map which purports to track results as they come in.

I agree. 4th means he's "up there" with Romney and Paul and the third guy (Gingrich or Santorum). 5th means he's "down there" with Bachman and Huntsman and whoever. That's because Perry's poll numbers in South Carolina and Florida are really low.
For Gingrich, the calculation is different. He's leading in the polls in South Carolina and Florida, so even a 5th-place finish in Iowa won't stop him cold. (It might even help him in the sense that other states like to 'cock a snook' at Iowa from time to time.)

What is known as the "Zoot Suit Riots" occurred between the gangs of predominantly black and Mexican youths who were at the forefront of the zoot-suit subculture, and the predominantly white American servicemen stationed along the Pacific coast. On the night of June 3, 1943, eleven sailors on shore leave stated that they were attacked by a group of Mexican pachucos. In response to this, a group of over 200 uniformed sailors chartered 20 cabs and charged into the Mexican American community in East Los Angeles. Any zoot suiter was fair game. On this and the following nights, many a zoot suiters were beaten by this mob and stripped of their clothes, their zoot suits, on the spot. Nine sailors were arrested during these disturbances, not one was charged with any crime. On the following nights of June 4th and 5th, the uniformed servicemen (by this time the sailors had been joined by soldiers and marines) again invaded East Los Angeles, marching abreast down the streets, breaking into bars and theaters, and assaulting anyone in their way. Not one was arrested by the Police or the Sheriff. In fact, the servicemen were portrayed in the local press as heroes stemming the tide of the "Mexican Crime Wave." During the nights of June 6th and 7th, these scenes were again repeated. Time Magazine later reported that, "The police practice was to accompany the caravans of soldiers and sailors in police cars, watch the beatings and jail the victims." Police arrested over 600 Chicano youths without cause and labeled the arrests 'preventive' action. Los Angelenos cheered on the servicemen and their civilian allies." Finally, at midnight on June 7th, the military authorities moved to stop the rioting of their personnel, and Los Angeles was declared off limits for all military personnel.
California's State Senators were concerned about the adverse effect that the events might have on the relationship between the United States and Mexico. An item in the Los Angeles Times stated, "San Francisco Senator Downey declared that the riots may have 'extremely grave consequences' in impairing relations between the United States and Mexico, and may endanger the program of importing Mexican labor to aid in harvesting California crops." These fears were compounded when the Mexican Embassy formally drew the Zoot-Suit Riots to the attention of the State Department. It was the fear of an international incident that could only have an adverse effect on California's economy that motivated California Governor Warren to order a public investigation into the causes of the riots.

RON PAUL won't win, because he's an AMERICA-HATING leftist.
I would say not only is he an America hating leftist, but that he and his supporters are outright traitors.
While our brave soldiers fight and die to protect Afghanistan from al-Qaeda's primary and historic ally, the Taliban, Ron Paul describes them as essentially freedom fighters like the American patriots.
Furthermore, Ron Paul believes that foreign terrorists should be able to tell us what we can and can't do in terms of foreign policy. Hence, his statements that 9/11 was an understandable act of retaliation for American actions taken against Saddam Hussein in the 1990s.
If treason floats your boat, then fine. But don't pretend that it doesn't exist.

2. Ron Paul is a fucking douche.
3. Romney hasn't spent anywhere near that amount. Nor has he toured all the counties or even competed for Iowa, like Santorum. Iowa was Santorum's gambit, and he won not because he was correct in a justified-true-belief style, but because of a Gettier-eque, right man in the right place at the right time.

Romney's primary argument is that he is inevitable...and the other choice is Ron Paul. If you give the primary voters a specific third option and not half a dozen people splitting the not Romney/Paul vote that potentially changes quickly.

Amen. The "conservative" socialism, Romneycare, and Strong Gun Control are ideological non starters.
But the abortion flip flop is so ridiculous it amounts to a character non starter. The man has no personal character and plays politics with human life. Watching him pander to the left on abortion in the early 2000s, say he's been pro-abortion rights for 37 years and outlawing it = back alley deaths, how in his legal opinion Roe v Wade is "good law" and how he will "never waver" in supporting abortion rights... all that isn't just wrong ideologically, it's a passionate fully fleshed out pander, and when Romney flipped on this, he didn't do so a little bit. He pandered 100% the other way. At 57 years old? I can't trust even the few things he says that I agree with, and Obama would crush his flip flopping ass like a bug. The Romney debates Romney ad was awesome, and they barely put any effort into it. It pisses both sides off and leaves us realizing the man is dishonest.
Mitt Romney doesn't deserve it.

No offense to those who do take it seriously and who drag their rears out in the cold and snow to cast their votes....but damnit....that kind of a turnout simply does not justify the impact it has upon the rest of the nation. Just as the electoral vote system keeps cities like NY and LA from choosing the president for the rest of the nation, so too should there be limits on the power of the small towns in a single state.
Something has to change. I no longer give a rat's ass about "tradition".

I've been telling you ninnies who think 'it's too late' before it has even begun, but you're too busy screaming about Ron Paul's past associations with racism. So Iowa goes Santorum/Paul, Paul/Santorum, Romney.
In 2008 Iowa went Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson, and they all made fine presidents.

Doubt it. The RCP average has Romney crushing the field with 41% with Paul in 2nd at 18.8% and Gingrich in 3rd at 12.5%. Santorum is in 6th with 4%. He would have to make a pretty big leap to get from 6th into 2nd or 3rd and would need to take votes away from Gingrich, Huntsman, and Bachmann (if she were to drop out).

Not $40 Million or any such amount as claimed.
Speaking of money, this is really the metric by which we can see the formal downfall of Rick Perry.
Informally, that debate stumble was an amalgamation of much of the general frustration with his performance and lack of formal fluence on the issues. Mind you, this wasn't a fault of Mr. Perry per say, rather what happens when you take any governor and expect them to transition from the state-level to the national stage in 3 weeks after throwing a debate prep binder at them.
After being the conservative option, spending the most in Iowa (http://tinyurl.com/7v77t34) and then coming in 5th place and being lucky to break 10% of the vote -- this is a death knell IMHO.

When you look at the candidates running, Santorum hits all the conservative check boxes better then the other candidates*.
It is easy to overestimate how much one state will decide, but if we are going to get serious about a not-Romney he's arguably the man in the position to be that guy right now.
*Perry it could have been you, if only you had a "heart".

Read CoolCzech's post.
He was talking about Paul giving us four more years of Obama. That's foolish in any other year. There is no reason to believe Paul's candidacy goes anywhere aside from a few states that have these sorts of weird caucuses and the weirdos around to capitalize on it.
The only way Paul is relevant is if Romney can't seal the deal and break 25% and the vote keeps getting split three ways.
If Romney can't convince conservatives to vote for him, then Paul becomes relevant.

Well, I just caucused my ass off. Neither Bachmann nor Huntsman had representatives there.
The results in my precinct in my little town with a whopping 275 votes cast:
1 - Luap Nor! (Fuck. Really?)
2 - Mittens
3 - Santorum (huh?)
4 - Gingrich
5 - Perry
6 - Bachmann
7 - Huntsman (0 votes)
I should have taken video because I don't remember the actual vote counts except that Paul was in the 90s, Romney in the 70s, Santorum in the 40s, Gingrich in the 30s, Perry in the 20s, Bachmann at 4, and Huntsman 0. As close as I remember.
I tell ya, if Luap Nor wins Iowa, someone needs to sit Iowa in the corner with our dunce hats on and take away our caucus privileges for a while. Best I could gather in talking with some Paulbots is that they think they're voting on principle. It's not like Paul has actually done anything other than talk. Idiots.

Perry's going all in with SC. Newt has a commanding lead right now with Romney in 2nd at his typical ~20%. The interesting thing is that the last poll is two weeks old so we don't know if Gingrich's collapse in Iowa is confined to Iowa or if it's playing out in SC as well.

Whatcha gonna do? Law's the law.... Iowa state law... Illinois state law... these things are federally binding you know.
Next year Alabama is gonna pass a law saying they must be allowed to vote 2 weeks before Iowa, but will call the primary a 'Civil Plebicite' so as not to trigger Iowa's law, as a Civil Plebicite is not neither a meeting, a caucus or a primary.
And I hear Vancouver is passing a law saying they get to vote too.

I know about the bow sniping (part of the reason my perks wound up all over the place). I had this one fight in the bowels of a fort I just couldn't do, so I tried sneaking. One hit sniped both the archer and the mage, retreating for a bit while the tank came looking for me and failing. The best part about that was after the third time I sniped the tank, he gave the usual "I thought I heard something" but then followed it with a glance over his shoulder at his dead buddies and said "I'm gonna kill whoever did this."
Also you pick every lock without sitting there for an hour, finish the thieves quest series, and then just never return the key, you can unlock every lock without a lockpick.
That'll save me a couple perks in the lockpicking series, then. I was having trouble finding a few extra to get my stack on the base pickpocketing perk.

Perry spent ridiculous money here for the result he has gotten. Where is his firewall state in the next three or four contests?
Gingrich did poorly, but his was a campaign by TV ads and that wasn't going to work in Iowa anyway. He is hanging his hat on SC, so it didn't matter how he finished.
Santorum's campaign plan: 1. Win Iowa 2.???? 3.Be president. Interesting to find out what the ???? part is going to be. He should get a good boost out of this, though.
Romney: Not a good night to get punked by Santorum like he is.

>>>@Jeff B - Kid A and Amnesiac (recorded at the same time, I believe) are their masterpieces.
>>>You must be happy - this is all a win for Romney, isn't it?
For years I was convinced that Kid A was and would remain their peak...until they came up with In Rainbows. A greater, more unexpected late career turnaround hasn't been seen outside of Barry Bonds and BALCO. "Reckoner" may just be their finest moment on record, period.
Amnesiac always struck me as a bit too patchwork, chiefly because Thom Yorke crippled the album weeks before its release by removing "Cuttooth" (which remains their greatest B-side) and putting in the awful "Hunting Bears" in its place as the 9th song on the album. Listen to Amnesiac with "Cuttooth" restored (ideally crossfading in from "Dollars And Cents" as it originally was meant to) and the ENTIRE ALBUM becomes a completely different experience. I think people would widely consider it their best, or close, if they'd just let it go out the way it was supposed to.
And yeah, looking like a good night for Romney. First or second with Santorum is pretty much ideal, maybe even better than a decisive win as it keeps Rick alive and kicking to split the vote in SC with Perry, Paul, and maybe Gingrich and Bachmann.

Santorum beat all these guys, and he had about as much funding as a girl scout troupe. That he apparently beat Romney is staggering, given how much romney has put into being president for most of the past decade. Many, many millions. What a weak candidate.
Sure, Newt didn't win either, but he didn't need to and his campaign is also on a shoestring. We need to watch the near future and see if Newt really can win. Personally, I think Newt is the most conservative candidate who can win. Wish that were Perry, but it isn't.

Very early performance, two years before it would be officially recorded. Truly captures that feeling of being "in the deepest oceans, the bottom of the sea."
(Everyone is welcome to download this...I just uploaded it personally, so no worries about viruses or whatnot.)
I also love "Bodysnatcher" -- as heavy a rock song as they've done since the era of The Bends. Also a huge fan of "Nude" (a miracle, really -- a song they'd had around for over a decade, that they didn't actually ruin when they finally came up with an official version) and "Faust Arp."

It's a straw poll. It's not the end of the world.
The thing about a caucus is that, in Iowa, it's on a cold night in January, middle of the week, and you make people wait more than an hour in a meeting before they get to vote for their candidate. The people who come out to vote for a candidate really, really want to. And the campaigns that are better at turning out passionate support will get their ticket punched for NH.
Maybe Iowa doesn't pick presidents, but they serve an important role.

Ace, we're talking about Skyrim, if it's the game you're wondering about. In-game, you're introduced to the practice about ten minutes in (depending on how long you took designing your character). You already have ten lockpicks in your inventory, so you just walk up to a locked door or chest, hit "x" when prompted and the minigame starts. Like any other skill in the game you get better by doing it a lot.

If you're going to learn Italian, you might as well learn Spanish too. Once you know one, the other will come easy-peasy. And Spanish is a fucking cinch to learn outside of the normal difficulties that native English-speakers have in deploying things like the subjunctive and conditional tenses.
French is a bit harder because of the vocab.

You don't seem to get it: if you learn Italian, you're already 85% of the way towards knowing Spanish at a level of semi-fluency. (And it's a short step to Portuguese from there). Meanwhile, the same quasi-commutative property does not apply to French, which has a whole shitton of German-language interference wreaking havoc on its vocabulary and pronunciation to render it significantly more difficult to pick up.

Yes, and? You do realize this is a STATEWIDE election, right? It really doesn't matter where the votes come from in the state, just so long as the numbers are there.
And Romney is only winning the "blue areas around the cities" because, generally speaking, there are more Republicans there than anywhere else in Iowa. There are also more Democrats (and, being cities, the Dems outnumber the GOP unfortunately).
I don't see how this is some sort of indictment of Romney's victory, or a warning sign about how the general election might play out...unless you're just trying to float an unstated "them thar RURAL folks are more pure and true and conservative than those city slickers!" bullshit thesis.

Not really. Tactically, maybe. Think strategically.
Strategically, Iowa has killed the viable anti-Romney's.
In the long-run, the only viable candidates were Perry, Romney and maybe Gingrich if we lived in a simulation with a crazy-ass guy at the helm.
Iowa, tonight, has effectively ended Rick Perry -- given NH and the requirements of top-4 finisher, there is a high probability he won't qualify for the next debate in South Carolina. The debate gaffe was the virtual end, this is the real thing.
Iowa has fatally wounded Gingrich. He's bleeding and totally defensive without Maverick on Catapult 3.
Iowa has pushed up Ron Paul and Santorum as the anti-Romney's. Ron Paul is bloody insane. Santorum seem to have huge reservations, even voiced here.
Iowa was well played by the Boston crew.

To be fair, Iowa didn't end Rick Perry...Rick Perry pretty much did.
Asshat was in the lead by ten points in August. Then he started speaking. I don't think he was prepared for the scrutiny of a national issues campaign, much like Palin wasn't when she became the VP nominee.

I just think it's interesting the way Romney plays in the state is the same way a democrat plays in the state.
Romney's support is a majority only in areas that are dominated by democrats.

My audio processing never got up to speed. I can follow Spanish TV and movies if Spanish subtitles are on, otherwise it's too fast for the audio part of my brain. But I can read Spanish in real time.
After a lot of effort I got to the point where I could watch/read Hollywood movies dubbed in Spanish, trashy Mexican chat shows about celebrities, and Mexican sports shows about soccer.
Culturally I didn't exactly elevate myself. ESPN Deportes and Sabado Gigante didn't really expand my cultural frontier much.
The reading seems to be a permanent part of my brain now. I can go long periods without reading anything in Spanish, but jump right back in. But my poor audio processing gets even shittier if I go weeks or months without practicing.
I go on periodic self-improvement kicks. The language one took me a long time. And probably wasn't worth the effort. I enjoyed it though.

Yup. The 2 that went for Perry, Paul and Santorum take 2nd and 3rd (1 each) and Romney 4th.
In the counties that went for Paul, he probably averages 4th place, Perry and Gingrich show up more in Paul counties, and Santorum ahead of him. In one or two of Paul's bluest counties, Romney shows up 2nd. A couple of others, 5th.
He shows up 2nd in about 1/3rd of Santorum's counties, but then 3rd - 5th in the rest. In Davis he came in 6th.

Wow, you're really living in a fantasy world, aren't you? I'm sorry you're so upset about Romney's victory tonight (yes, even if Santorum ends up topping by some statistically insignificant margin, it's a big victory). The idea that Paul or GINGRICH (ha!) are going to be thought of as "winners" after tonight's results is laughable sour grapes.
Remember: no matter how hard you squinch your eyes shut and WISH, it won't make those wishes come true.
Posted by: Jeff B. at January 03, 2012 11:17 PM (hIWe1)
I detest Paul and have no love for Gingrich. This is Paul's high water mark -- he only does well in contests like internet polls and caucuses, stuff his fanboys can spam. It's all downhill for him from now on.
Perry lost badly. He's an ex-candidate. A Norwegian Blue.
So if you combine Perry's and Paul's loss, it moves Newt up. I think Newt would be a horrible nominee against Obama, but it's a fact that he gains from tonight's showing.
Santorum has been catapulted into the latest "not Romney", win or lose.
Right now Romney can't win by more than a few hundred votes. That's truly pathetic.
So the only two winners tonight are Santorum and Gingrich. That logic is undeniable.
Romney will get about zero momentum from his NH win. Things are going to get interesting after that.

It's worse than that according to Erick Erickson and Ed Morrissey: apparently Santorum is demanding that Romney "concede" so Santorum can deliver his 'victory' speech. Which, as Morrissey points out, is almost Newt-like in its arrogant insanity and retardation given that there are still 66 precincts (many of them in Romney-leaning areas) still out there to be counted and only 116 or so votes between the two.

1) Spanish.
2) Drawing. Several tries. All failures. Could trace and do some rudimentary cartooning.
3) Guitar. Pretty easy to get to basic campfire rock stage. Hard to get good, though. And if you don't practice it's a bitch on the fingers.
4) Piano. I play piano like a guitar, strumming chords.
5) Juggling. Easy to master 3 ball cascade.
6) Sleight of hand card magic. Did this as a teen. Fun to learn. Downfall was I always get nervous and twitchy during the tricky part.
Drawing was the only one I'd consider a near complete failure. I can juggle, do a card trick, and play a recognizable version of most popular songs on either guitar or piano. But if you asked me to draw something it'd look like total crap.

With all due respect, you just aren't grasping this. Romney doesn't need momentum, he has the money and infrastructure to go the distance. He doesn't need tactical wins. The only other candidate who didn't need tactical shenanigans in these contests (because he had the money, the structure and the right backing) was Rick Perry, who just died tonight.
Forget the tactics. Think strategically. The only viable anti-Romney, Rick Perry finished 5th and given NH as it currently stands, he will not qualify for even the debates in South Carolina.
The inputs into Iowa were Perry and Gingrich. The outputs are Santorum and Ron-fucking-Paul. Gingrich has been fatally neutered IMHO.
Iowa has basically forced the Republican party to walk the line and ask themselves if they're feeling not lucky, but fucking batshit insane.

For most skills, I would always fall short of my goal, but I would make tangible progress. And the next time I'd be able to start at a higher level.
But with drawing I just have zero natural talent.
I have a brother who is a decent artist. I honestly have never gotten close to how good he was when he was 8. And he's not ever that good. He just has some natural talent to draw what's in his mind's eye. I don't.
I worked through books. I did the drawing exercises. And I showed zero improvement. I bought books, special pencils. That Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain book that was popular.
(The most likely reason I can't draw is that the Bilderberger and North American Superhighway groups poisoned the fluoride in my water and chemically lobotomized the drawing portion of my brain. Which is why I'm supporting Dr. Ron Paul who has vowed to not chemically lobotomize my brain.)

You're reading into my post something that isn't there. What's my crime here, repeating what you said in your own voice a couple hours ago? Unless I was tripping on PCP you quite clearly said that between Paul, Romney and Santorum you would reluctantly choose Romney. (I did point out that you would be 'revolted' at having to do so.) If you changed your mind in the last 120 minutes then fine -- it's not my fault for taking you at your word, though.
I guess if the larger point you're making is "I'm in a crappy mood because this outcome sucks a fucking dick as far as my personal desires are concerned," then I can understand that. Not trying to dance on anyone's grave here -- especially because, as I keep pointing out, I actually like Perry and respect him (and would be happy to support him as my nominee had he won) in a way that I don't feel about, say, Newt.
If you want to go jump on the Huntsman bandwagon, then fine go ahead. Hell, I'd be fine with Huntsman if I thought he could win the nomination.

Of course it does, you're just confusing scales.
Gov. Perry is the only globally viable candidate that can go-toe-to-toe with Romney nationally. He has vocal super-nodes in the conservative movement like Ace, he had the Southern money men, the infrastructure/hierarchy and experienced team. Nobody else had this.
Perry's sucked recently and Iowa's poor performance was the result.
There is a difference between global optimal solutions and local ones.

Gingrich is polling strong in both those states, and he's not going to cede them easily to Santorum. It seems like it's rapidly turning into a three-prong race: Romney, Paul, and a battle for the third spot on the stage between Gingrich and Santorum.
Romney still hasn't demonstrated that he can add the former supporters of anti-Romney candidates to his own base of support. If Santorum and Gingrich end up in a two-man race to split 65 percent of the GOP vote, one or even both will end up with more than Romney's 25 percent share.
Posted by: stuiec at January 03, 2012 08:17 PM (PcAXh)
Yes, except that at that point the candidate himself becomes a problem. Santorum might possibly be a threat (though I'll believe it when I see it), but Gingrich will continue to drown in the buckets of offal drenched up by his horrible past misdeeds, and his own weirdness.

But if there is no chance of Paul winning the nomination, he returns to being a viable protest candidate box to check.

It's more than that. I actually tried -- during the phase where I was like "no fucking WAY am I going to default to supporting Romney!" and yes there really was one -- to get into the idea of supporting Huntsman. But I just couldn't. It wasn't merely the conservative-baiting on global warming (though my god did that piss me off), it's...something about his entire demeanor. His tone just seems "off." For all that people talk about Mitt Romney being "plastic" or "fake" he doesn't hold a candle to Huntsman in the "unctuousness" sweepstakes.

That's the way this primary was always going to be. The thing is in primaries is after a while voters like to attach themselves to winners. Strong showing in Iowa, a win in NH, strong showing in SC, etc. pretty soon he starts moving off the 25%. It's not just a win here and there it's consistency. Maybe Santorum has it in him but I think consistency has a lot to do with money.

Nah, that's not really fair to Santorum. I mean, Santorum is a wet blanket, and comes off like a sour so-con parody sometimes, but he seems like a pretty decent guy all told. Even his one truly irksome failing -- the constant need to say shit like "guys...hey guys, I DID COOL STUFF when I was a Senator!" -- is reasonably human and relatable.
Meanwhile Newt genuinely seems to think of himself as a Nietzschean "superman" archetype, and behaves accordingly. This is a guy who was literally justifying his flip-flopping on global warming last week by proclaiming that he was an "amateur paleontologist," and who privately talks about how bourgeois morality is only something that needs to be paid "lip service" to, but that Great Men like him can behave as their needs dictate. The guy's track record is littered with...well, "weirdness" is the best catch-all I can think of.
Santorum's a nerd, and a really terrible fit in terms of profile for the current moment. But Newt actually sometimes gives off genuine 'sociopath' vibes to me.

I really feel sorry for those of you who are going to have to make that argument, in the possible event of a Romney nomination, when, being already too unreliable for much of the base's taste, he veers left in the general so as "to not scare independents." You have a miserable year ahead of you.

There'll be none of this talk of "thrusting" when I'm president, ladies and gentlemen.

So I just give-up on this country altogether, is that your argument? The unwillingness of the conservative population to fight for the family unit, morality, education, etc. when it mattered is partially how we got into this mess.

I agree with all you said about Newt.
I guess I just tend to use "weird" in a different, less malevolent context. To me, Santorum, who you described as a nerd, wet blanket, and socon parody, is "weird".
Romney's pretty "weird" too. Gingrich might just be evil, but I think "weird" is a non-threatening adjective

Huntsman just gives off douche chills. No way around it, even if his policies might align better than some of the other candidates

Genius, you might want to go read about what civil wars generally look like if you think making arrests is some kind of threat/solution.

How about you quit cramming your view of morality down our throats?
No one is cramming anything down your throat, you self-loathing idiot.

I'm not suggesting a course of action for you. I'm saying that your claim that this election is important, coupled with the nomination of an unprincipled, untrustworthy, lefty-pandering, government healthcare supporting squish, just doesn't hold water. It makes no sense to claim that it's vitally important that we nibble around the edges of problems which may well ruin us before the election arrives anyway.
If our choice are Romney or Obama, then the truth is that 70-80% of the people of this country have already given up and no choice we make is going to affect the macro outcome.

Do you just come out of hiding during primary nights to bug the shit out of us, dude?

Perry is not done.
He just wants let people think about what the field would look like without him. Crafty move.
Santorum will destroy himself, no experience.
Bachmann is done.
Any real conservatives left ???

I understand how you feel, Ace, but it's just politics. We may not like them, but their votes are going to come in awful handy come November.
Remember also many are young and idealistic and not overly informed outside of their bubble of info. As they mature and stop masturbating to the most boring novel ever written -- Atlas Shrugged -- some will adopt more realistic stances, and they'll be predisposed to adopt them on the right side of the aisle.

I'm guessing that's because, in part, you don't like listening to someone take a rhetorical billyclub to President Obama.
Santorum's speech was surprisingly good, however. And hey -- I'm a biased hack.
Posted by: Jeff B. at January 03, 2012 08:58 PM (hIWe1)
I agree that it would largely mean they have given-up, at least at that point. However, we still have a chance of future recovery if Romney is elected; if Obama is re-elected, though, there will be no coming back.
Besides, if you feel it will make absolutely no difference whatsoever, then why even bother threatening to withhold a vote for Romney?
Posted by: Miss80s at January 03, 2012 09:00 PM (d6QMz)
Ron Paul's neo-Nazi supporters are irrelevant because they never voted Republican, or for anyone else, in the first place. These are people who were overwhelmingly apolitical until DOCTOR Paul came goose-stepping in, and will be again after his bunker collapses around him. So fuck 'em.

Hard to argue there. Sure, if you die in unbelief and isolate yourself in Hell for all eternity, or until its annihilation following the last judgment, I suppose you can accomplish a total separation from God. And win, or something. The point was God's omnipresence makes it an impossible task while you walk this earth, regardless of my, or any other Christian's, intent towards you. So whining to us about your desire not to be under his feet is pointless.
Fortunately for you, he loves you, and is more patient than most of us, and only asks that you accept forgiveness for your sins.

Find some online news TV or radio stations in Italian or French and start listening.
Buy CHILDREN's books, with pictures to start, in Italian or French.
Buy simple French or Italian school children grammar books and dictionaries.
It'll seem foreign (duh) for a while, but it will come to you, and you will start THINKING in those languages, not just translating.
Also, sure, use traditional methods to gain some basic vocabulary and grammar, but concurrently, do the above.
Finally, check out Tim Ferriss's stuff on learning foreign languages quickly.
Wait, not finally.
Also, travel to regions where it is spoken!
Good luck.

Voicing despair. And it is the logically required counterargument to the Romneybots' inevitability/electability obsession.
However, we still have a chance of future recovery if Romney is elected
I just don't believe that. I guess it's good for you to have that hope, but I can't fake it.
Posted by: Methos at January 03, 2012 09:07 PM (sOXQX)
He's not as electable as they think he is but their bragging doesn't make me feel vengeful. Voting or withholding votes based on the feelings of others just doesn't make sense to me.
I just don't believe that. I guess it's good for you to have that hope, but I can't fake it.
I can't force you to be optimistic but I hope you can understand why I feel let-down by older conservatives. Doesn't mean my generation is somehow blameless in all this but I do feel that it's not just the Republican politicians who threw-in the towel.

I was born in the 70s, so it's not so much about being older as just understanding that there are inescapable consequences for the choices we've made in allowing credit to drive our economy and allowing Democrats to waste all the resources they did buying votes, and understanding the magnitude of further damage being inflicted by the frauds being committed today to cover it all up.
Ballots disappearing in the deep of night only to turn up in Romney's favor is not helping my mood.

We were given chance after chance to rectify our situation and instead we complained bitterly but did nothing meaningful to change our situation. People always blame the politicians for our current crisis because it is convenient and, while they do share a lot of the blame, so do we. The liberals were allowed to destroy the foundations of our society and economy without much protest. People can complain all they want about the sorry state of our government but it is reflection of who we largely have become.
