Is Mitt In Striking Distance In Michigan?
— DrewM

Another day, another bad poll for Team Obama. This time via Rasmussen.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Michigan Voters shows Obama with 48% support to RomneyÂ’s 42%. Five percent (5%) favor some other candidate in the race, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

Obama won Michigan by 17 points in 2008 and has bailed out the UAW, er, auto industry in the meantime. So, this shouldn't be that close.

Yesterday news was Minnesota and maybe even New Mexico.

I'm not a big believer in polls this early being able to prove much (remember Kerry's leads in 04 and McCain's in 0 but Team Obama has a terrible environment, has had the paid media field to itself for the most part and is almost out of time to get helpful economic facts (in reality things are getting worse).

Below the fold: Another shameless plug. Related: If you're interested in keeping track of the electoral college race...there's an ap for that!

It's something my business partner put together and it allows you to make your predictions for the race and post them to faceebook and Twitter. You can make multiple predictions as the race changes and the country becomes a sea of red.

You can get the Android version here. Kindle Fire, iPhone and iPad versions are coming soon.

Just for the record, I cleared promoting this here with Ace and a part of each sale will go to Mr. Ewok (full disclosure: he said he didn't want that but I'm insisting).

I'm thinking that in October.....Barky and his media fan club, will pull out the "Fear!" card.

They will start talking about how "Hope will be lost"....if he loses.

In other words, they will try to scare people into voting for him.

18 Kerry led in July in most polls and that was his high water mark.

The JEF lead in most polls in July, McStain had some good polls after Palin and then it all came back to about where the JEF was in July.

This next month of polls will tell us what kind of election is coming. If Romney holds the lead, I say it means people have already settled on the idea of him as President and any closeness is hedging on account of the JEF being the incumbent.

Anyone see the season premier episode of "Warehouse 13" on SyFy last night?

It's interesting that theme of it was...."When people lose Hope, rioting breaks out".

There were riots breaking out, worldwide, because Warehouse 13 had gotten blown up...and Pandora's Box had been destroyed.

But they used the the phrase:

"When people lose Hope..." ....over and over.

The SyFy channel, is of course, a part of the GE/NBC/Universal group....which is very pro-Barky.

38 Mitt is actually looking really strong right now, I think the biggest issue for him is conservatives tend to be such Eeyores that it could be a self-fulfilling prophesy.

When you look at the polling models, they're pure liberal fantasies.  Democrats with record breaking turnout and Republicans with 100 year low turnout.  Yet the numbers are "tied".

President's get their approval rating on Election Day.  Every single state Bush was under 50% in 2004, he lost.  Right now, every single real swing state has Obama below 50%.

I think he's toast, but let's not get cocky.

However, Michigan is home to hundreds of thousands of famously delusional people. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll makes it clear: Voters give Mitt Romney an edge over President Barack Obama on ideas for lifting the struggling American economy.

But how important is that edge? If you look at economic conditions in electoral battleground states, perhaps not as important as the national picture would suggest.

Yet the fact that some of the swing states in the election are faring better economically may blunt that edge. For example, the unemployment rates in Iowa and New Hampshire are both 3 full points below the 8.2 percent national rate; Obama leads in both states by 1 and 5 percentage points, respectively, according to an average of recent polls by realclearpolitics.com.

PPP has a new one tomorrow, their last showed O up double digits. If they show it closing too, then there you go. Michigan is a tossup right now.

People outside of Michigan donÂ’t really understand what happened in the auto bailout.

Obama bailed the UAW out.  There are far less assembly plants in Michigan than there used to be, and thatÂ’s where the UAW is.  Ford, and especially Delphi, which was the spinoff of GMÂ’s component manufacturing, got screwed.  All the salary and non-UAW hourly that work for GM and Chrysler got screwed.  So, itÂ’s not like everyone is happy here.

After ObamaÂ’s bailout, the UAW hand picked their candidate for Governor, an Obama-loving socialist who was mayor of Lansing.  He wrapped himself around Obama, his policies and the auto bailout in an election against someone who never ran for office before and promoted himself as “One Tough Nerd”.

Our guy won by 19 points  -  and this was when the bailout was fresh news.

Michigan is going red this election.

I don't expect Intrade to truly reflect the ultimate outcome this early in the game, but it "should" reflect a sort of current best consensus evaluation of all available data.

The fact that Romney is at 40% means either that he's still a significant underdog, or that the Intrade POTUS market is significantly distorted.

I don't know which it is, but I don't like either option very much.

187 I had a dream the other night that during a debate Barky accuses Mitt of wanting to let the Detroit auto companies "go bankrupt" while he, Barky, refused to let that happen.

Mitt let's him go on a while in that vein, and then says, "you do know that both GM and Chrysler filed for bankruptcy on your watch, don't you?"

To which Barky replies, shaking his head in sad, tired exasperation:  "There you go again.  Both GM and Chrysler avoided bankruptcy because of my gutsy calls....but if we had listened to you..."

Immediately after, George Stephanopoulus remarked in the after reporting that
" 'bankruptcy' is a word that is open to many interpretations...as is the word 'avoided' . " Axelrod is hospitalized the next afternoon for "exhaustion" and the day after that Hillary calls on Obama "to step aside for the good of our party"....Michelle immediately issues a statement rejecting Hillary's call saying, 'y'all tell that Arkansas cracker be-yotch come down here and I'll step her fat wrinkly white ass aside with a size thirteen upside 'it..."

BTW, we are usually spared the election commercials, however this year we are getting Rove's ads hourly, The ads, plus the fact that our power comes from coal (which means our power plant will shut down) are guaranteeing a Romney win. people up here vote with their pocketbook, and raising our electricity prices means a loss for Obama-not to mention how many jobs will be lost when our power plant shuts down and we have to buy power from a non coal fired source.

248 They sucked his brains out." Starship Troopers. Who else had a raging hard-on for Dina Myers after that movie came out?

249 Polls have remained steady for weeks - trending in favor of Oatmeal Von Mayberry.

The wheels on Obama's campaign cart are already in a low speed wobble and, as election day nears, that low speed wobble turns to a high speed fishtail.

Slurpee simply can't handle the pressure.

251 If I were in the Romney management team I would ask the Huffpo people if they could run their Rich Kids ad.  It is laughably bad and screams more about the left that anything about Romney.  http://tinyurl.com/cl7km3c

255 Uh, no. Michigan is not going to go GOP. Not in its DNA. Nice to see the numbers getting tighter, that's a good sign. Just worry about OH, VA, FL, NC. Get those and we'll all be celebrating.

New economy, new rules.  Anything is possible now.

257 Cornfed, why are we still talking about NC? No bloody way is NC voting for Barryochus this cycle.

I predict that OH and FL are going for Romney too; but there's always a chance he could screw up, so I'm not calling those states yet.

VA is doomed to become a Blue State, as DC grows in power. This may or may not be the year that happens, but it is certainly a Purple State - which NC is not.

258 Totally Unscientific but after recent conversations with small business owners specifically located in and around The Peoples Republic of Ann Arbor, the topic is centered on the economy.  The reality clue bat has smacked the business owning ObamaBots HARD in wallet thus far.  Many, and I am not exaggerating are hanging on by their finger nails.  The old  days of Net 30 payment to suppliers has morphed into Net 90 (on a good day).  There is only so much float a business can withstand before the red bleed looks like a Freddy Krueger movie.  Without exception every single one has said if they could just close up and work for someone else said they would.  Of course, you will never ever hear a word of this from the local press.  After the November "shellacking" they will all be collectively thinking WTF just happened?
