— rdbrewer The Blaze linked an episode of the BBC production Newswipe With Charlie Brooker which featured a forensic psychologist named Park Dietz who warned against creating the next mass killer with saturation coverage. Dr. Dietz from the video (embedded below the fold):
We've had twenty years of mass murderers, throughout which I have repeatedly told CNN and our other media, "If you don't want to propagate more mass murders, don't start the story with sirens blaring. Don't have photographs of the killer. Don't make this 24/7 coverage. Do everything you can not to make the body count the lead story, not to make the killer some kind of anti-hero. Do localize this story to the affected community, and make it as boring as possible in every other market. Because every time we have intense saturation coverage of a mass murder, we expect to see one or two more within a week.
He elaborated further in an article about him appearing in The Independent:
"Here's my hypothesis," he said. "Saturation-level news coverage of mass murder causes, on average, one more mass murder in the next two weeks." The reason, he says, has something to do with the USA's size. In a country so large the likelihood of one or two people snapping becomes quite high. And Dr. Dietz views are echoed by none other than Roger Ebert, linked in The Blaze article above."It's not that the news coverage made the person paranoid, or armed, or suicidally depressed," Dietz said. "But you've got to imagine this small number of people sitting at home, with guns on their lap and a hit list in their mind. They feel willing to die. When they watch the coverage of a school shooting or a workplace mass murder, it only takes one or two of them to say - 'that guy is just like me, that's the solution to my problem, that's what I'll do tomorrow'. The point is that the media coverage moves them a little closer to the action.
The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.”In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.
(Emphasis added.) Should there be some rough ethical/professional guideline for the coverage of mass murders? Of course CNN and other news outlets are aware that panic and infamy are what many of these mass murderers want and that there is a good chance the next killer is making a mental note right now, "Here is how I can get on TV." But it appears the immediate opportunity to score political points outweighs the risk they might be encouraging another mass killing--an act they would undoubtedly view as causally remote anyway.

I'm in favor of a balanced approach to solve the problem of violence.
50% restricting First Amendment rights, 50% restricting Second Amendment rights. I'd be willing to negotiate it down to 40/40 with a 20% reduction in Third Amendment rights.

Ridicule.
If one or two of the MSM outlets were to turn their shit-cannons on the others and single out the individual anchors or reporters, I think the breathless, pathetic reporting would abate.
If CBS stood up and made the story about Dianne "80proof" Saywer's gimlet-eyed newscast, things might be different.

Let's be sensible about this. We're not talking about banning cameras. We're talking about limiting the size of the output they produce. Your average news show doesn't need 15 to 17 gigabytes of data per camera. A more reasonable amount would be... something less than 10, I would think.
Or we could ban semi-automatic cameras altogether, and they could just use the ones that revolve... around a tape spindle, I mean.
Yeah. Do it for the children.

The only time I've seen newsies restrain themselves is when their political motivations are tapped.
For example, they no longer publish the names of rape victims. They do that because they're inclined to favor the female victim's privacy interest over the accused (male) perpetrator's presumption of innocence. Of course, both names are (usually) public record, but you get the point. In he-said-she-said, she gets favor because ... you know, men are bad.
In this case, I think they believe they're sounding the drums for gun control, so they won't let up.
Maybe if they realized that sensationalizing crime actually makes voters want *less* gun control, they'd back off. Seriously, that's been the lesson of the past 40 years. We had essentially disarmed the citizenry in public, and violent crime headed for UK levels. Then the media-terrified public demanded concealed-carry, got it, and crime went down.

It's all ENTERTAINMENT and RATINGS.
Reporting, in the definition of the word, doesn't exist anymore. You can't watch 2 minutes of a news broadcast without getting some "tone" or "remark" that paints the slant of the intended message.
It's all about the narrative.

I may be just an idiot with a tin-foil hat here... but what if there's another reason for the wall-to-wall coverage:
Liberals actually want that other mass-murder to occur - and soon.
Sick theory, I know... but the reason is because the goal is to ban the guns.
F&F didn't get far enough before the approach was abandoned b/c of Agent Terry.
It just seems like there is such a united front by liberals on banning guns all of the sudden (with nebulous definitions that mean whatever they want them to mean, and everyone with a mis-informed opinion giving it). Like they had this freak idea that this particular case was their chance. Doing wall-to-wall coverage does glorify it and could be the tipping point for another lunatic. I'm not saying they know where a copy-cat would strike: they can't control that. Odds are it won't affect many people directly, but would push the tipping point way way over.
The news media can have their part, get ratings and sell commercials, blah blah blah...

I didn't actually learn about the shooting until after midnight. Of course I was interested and started reading various reports. I gave a quick summary of the 'facts' to my traveling companions.
Two days later, we compared notes on what I had garnered versus the latest version of the facts. Almost every single detail was wrong.
Then this should be noted too (2011 numbers):
The NCTC 2011 Report on Terrorism released early in June said “over 10,000 terrorist attacks occurred during the past year, affecting nearly 45,000 victims in 70 countries and resulting in over 12,500 deaths.”

The character played by Douglas wasn't the Good Guy, but he was portrayed as wanting to see them, not kill them.
In the end he committed suicide by cop when he pulled a squirt gun.

In those cases Michael Douglas is Everyman.
And my third favorite: Psycho-on-making-change-at-a-convenience-store violence.

And yet the idea persists. And every once in a while a guy decides to do it.
It's as if what media consumers will think about him--as if their experience of the thing he's decided to do--plays no part in his decision.
So yeah. Not different.

It's kind of hard to miss, considering there is a scene where Douglas asks "I'm the bad guy?"
It made a good companion piece to the Batman story 'The Killing Joke' in which the Joker declares anyone could be like him after a single really bad day, which force Batman to admit to himself that this is true in his own case.

You DO KNOW that Douglas is the villain of the movie, right? He's a psycho who walks across LA on his way to kill his wife and daughter. Robert Duvall is the good guy who stops him.
Um... no. Where do you get he wanted to kill them? He wanted to get to his daughters in time for her birthday to give her that snowglobe.

Imagine my surprise when I noticed this fine detail:
According to court records, Davis is a felon, convicted of second-degree homicide and unlawful possession of a weapon in Middlesex County, N.J., in 1975. Records further state he has been involved in numerous verbal altercations with neighbors, resulting in an order of protection being issued against him.
So he's a convicted murderer already convicted of unlawful possession of a weapon plus he's a nut. the only possible solution is to take guns away from people who didn't do it.

I was talking about the "foisting" part. Take my example of the Kardashians (please!). There is nothing that they do or say that affects my life in any way, yet every jot and tittle of their lives is front-page news. I don't care about them so why should I be forced to hear about their exploits? I. Don't. Want. To. Know. Because. It's. Not. Important.
The stuff I consider important, like what the people who pass the laws I have to abide by are doing, never gets covered truthfully. The things we ought to know, we don't. The unimportant seems to be all we ever hear about.

To Samuel L Jackson: Fuck you. You make/made millioins off glamorizing murder, mayhem, rage and outrageous acts so your claim that Movies and TV don't aid and abet mass murder are, shall we say, suspect?
Same with with every other Hollywood/Infotainment squawking head; if your programs didn't draw eyes and if advertisers didn't see a payoff for showing their products to those eyes, then your entire business model is either a fraud or failure. Since for the most part it isn't, then what you show on the screen, no matter the size or venue, DOES INFLUENCE the popular culture and CAN AND MIGHT influence the mentally unbalanced.
You want a discussion about guns? Fine, let's have that discussion but only if the influence of mass media is also on the table and the isolation and forced feminization of boys, the minimization and marginalization of men and male attributes in society by Liberal Progressive laws and regulations is also up for discussion.
Let's have THAT discussion.

Sensationalism in media have influenced violence in some degree since forever. The tales of warriors and such were spread far and wide before the printing press and by written word after.
Dime novels in the Old West glamorized the gunslingers , both good guys and bad. Buffalo Bill had his Wild West Show into the 20th Century.
Some people will be influenced positively and others negatively but the vast majority will not be influence one way or the other. Its called freaking life.

One of the patrons was discussing last week's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, and commented that the incident "makes me want to murder the suspect," police said.
For unknown reasons, Davis took the comment as a threat and asked, "You want to murder me?" Davis then walked out to his Volkswagen sedan, retrieved a loaded Smith & Wesson 9 mm pistol and fired three times in the customer's direction, police said.
Davis said "I'll let you slide," walked out of the barber shop and drove off in his car, police said.
