Yes, you Texans. Sometimes you fight to hard for your own good. I know of a few people (not personally by way of research) who have set up medical shop down there because it's large enough to maintain patients and still be outside the reach of the FDA so you can peddle shim-sham cures (since it's intersate commerce). I haven't quite worked out how to square that circle-ish problem.

Yeah... unfortunately this isn't Florida- it won't carry him here. It's a great story, and it won't hurt him, but it's not enough.
Basically- whatever HLF thinks about the issue- this race is between David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz. They're the only two really gaining traction.
Of the two, Dewhurst is our current Lt. Governor, and he's a little squishy (from Texas, of course, that means he'll be a "Right wing radical!" in the MFM). Cruz has no legislative or elective resume- he's never (that I can find) held any elective office. So the only things he's got are his wins as Solicitor General- and those are some fairly impressive wins.
He's saying all the right things, though, and he apparently registered with his local tea party as soon as they started up- so, as I said above, I'm cautiously optimistic.

It's called "personal responsibility." When you go to a doctor, you should have done some amount of research to satisfy yourself that they aren't a complete quack.
However, no one is "free from the FDA," and Texas isn't exactly gentle with doctors who are guilty of malpractice- even if we have Medical tort reform and Loser Pays.

In any case, I see that, but being the good virtue theorist I am, I also realize that "personal responsibilty" has to be balanced with the fac tthat we can't all be experts in everything.
Guy gets an MD, manages to skirt the law just enough to keep liscening creditials and keeps and builds a cult of personality that defends him on the interwebs (mix in some SEO to boot). Throw in enough science that works at a high theoretical level (cell culture) then fails in vivo and you've got yourself a recipe for disaster. Add just a dash of incurable cancer (which tends to cause people to try things they otherwise wouldn't) and it makes it worse. The farther you get from "Crystals and magic" and the closer you get to real (but failed) science the harder it gets for the individual to fully understand what's legitmate treatment and what's flim-flam.
This case managed to skirt the FDA for quite a while, since it got defended as intrastate commerce. Really freaken strange. It also requires a unique situation where you manufactor everything in house. This goes back to the 80s though, I think Texas has shifted a bit on position since then.
