— Dave in Texas Hmmm. Probably not. I'll call it "more Saturday Stupid."
As leader of the free world President Obama will be used to making speeches to millions of people around the globe. So he might have felt the occasion was a little beneath him yesterday when he stopped off in Reno, Nevada, to deliver an address outside a couple's garage.
In what could be a disastrous photo opportunity for the President's campaign, Mr Obama spoke to a handful of people in the crucial swing state.
The president's 15 minute address outside the home of Paul and Val Keller on Friday afternoon, drew a small audience of neighbours and supporters - though even his hosts said they were not sure if they would vote for him in the coming election.
It would depend I suppose on the timing, and the pre-announcing or something. If it were completely spontaneous I can sort of understand the low numbers.. it's a neighborhood after all.
Still, it sure looks lame, doesn't it?

Which is all that actually counts, how it looks. Also Obama ate a f'n dog and shoved a little girl.
via TiFW over at H2
I'M GOING to overanalyze this a little more. I think Obama and his team are working to try to connect him with "real Americans." Ok, here's a couple. A retired electrician and his wife, a simple, nice home in a small neighborhood. Out in front of the garage with a nice looking flag hanging over it.
I have one of those myself. It looks nice.
It's just, sheesh. Who's going to see this as "connecting with ordinary Americans?" And is that even a good objective. He looks "small", and looking small doesn't really help him right now. He's got all the advantages of an incumbent president. Power. Bully pulpit. Air Force One. The lapdog media.
So standing behind a teensy podium, with a Presidential Seal smaller than the headlights on that Jeep behind him, it just seems to diminish him.
I don't think he can connect with Americans. He can connect with George Clooney, and Hollywood, and $15 million dollar bigshot lefty donors.
But Paul and Val Keller?
He [Paul Keller]said he voted for the president in 2008 and plans to once again this year. His wife remains uncertain.'I don't know yet,' she [Val] answered when asked how she'll vote. 'I want to wait and see what happens in the economy,' she told MyNews4.
Remember the time he connected with real Americans in Ohio?

And also when he had grey hair?
Pic suggestion by Jewstin, another H2 goofball.

I am surprised that Obama still does this stuff after Joe the Plumber. But perhaps he doesn't go and talk to people afterwards. That was where his "Share the wealth" moment came up because Joe dared to ask him a question and got intereviewed later where he admitted to not liking the answer.

There was a story yesterday about a 71 year old widowed mother scheduled for eviction from her home on Mother's Day. Awwww, so sad, right?
Then you read on and find that she claims she was tricked into a bad loan and with all her husbands medical bills, and on a fixed income, they just couldn't afford it.
The mortgage is $5k per month. So, WTH kind of home does she live in? Then you learn that her husband had been suffering ill health for 12 years.
So, two folks at retirement age, one of them sick, qualify for a $5k per month mortgage and now, surprise!, she can't afford it on her fixed income.
Something stinks in suburbia.

According to the AP article headlined by Drudge, even the Europeans are butthurt over the dog eater's performance:
Around world, Obama's presidency a disappointment
In Europe, where more than 200,000 people thronged a Berlin rally in 2008 to hear Barack Obama speak, there's disappointment that he hasn't kept his promise to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, and perceptions that he's shunting blame for the financial crisis across the Atlantic.
In Mogadishu, a former teacher wishes he had sent more economic assistance and fewer armed drones to fix Somalia's problems. And many in the Middle East wonder what became of Obama's vow, in a landmark 2009 speech at the University of Cairo, to forge a closer relationship with the Muslim world.
In a world weary of war and economic crises, and concerned about global climate change, the consensus is that Obama has not lived up to the lofty expectations that surrounded his 2008 election and Nobel Peace Prize a year later. Many in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America were also taken aback by his support for gay marriage, a taboo subject among religious conservatives.
Looks like Presidentin' is tougher than Barky thought.

And then Acorn, with some more of the $15M, will help the CGI people vote in states with electronic balloting.

I'd suspect that they ran up the mortgage (or mortgages) during the bubble. My parents certainly did. Then my dad died and my mom lost her gig teaching at the adult school, and everything went to pot.
It happens. It's sad. But I'm not particularly surprised by it.
One of my mom's creditors was haranguing me, and I pointed out my mom's income; he said she had exactly the same income when she'd borrowed from his company. I replied, "Then you folks can't read a balance sheet, and have nothing to kick at, do you?"
He hung up on me.
Since that was what I wanted to accomplish, it suited me fine.

I don't think so. I blew the picture up a lot and it's on a pretty heavy duty mount -- it looks like the kind you can swivel from straight up to horizontal. Plus, in houses like that the garage door is usually flush mounted with the exterior.
Why in hell would you buy a pricey, heavy duty flag holder and mount it where you can only use it when the garage door is open?
I copied the image into IrfanView and blew it up about four times.
Verdict: the flag was planted for the dog eater's visit.

Pic #1 (from the article): Agree with Ace. President looks small, black "barrier" obviously meant to hide teleprompter. Brand new flag bolted to the garage trim...NO ONE does that. I guarantee you that flag was removed this morning.
Pic#2: SUV in the garage doesn't look good. Here's the President shaking hands with people who bought a house beyond their means, drive a gas guzzler and relied on the American tax payer to keep them in a much larger home than they need. Don't see this going over well.
Pic#3: Not even the entire press corps could be bothered to show up. Again, WAY more house than one retired couple needs, bailed out thanks to Obama's "It's not your fault you bought more house than you could afford" program. Does not make the president look good. Oh, look at that...TWO Gas Guzzlers in the garage!
Pic#4: "Nope, don't want none of your cracker coffee! I brought my own water! So this is how you peasants live, huh?"
Pic#5: "All peasants will stay at least one hundred feet away from the president so as to avoid any "Joe the Plumber" moments."
Pic#6: Adored by a crowd of several.
Pic#7: The crowd has grown from several to a couple dozen.
None of these pics helps the President's image.

Yup, two SUV's, and if I'm not mistaken, there is a fairly good size travel trailer hidden behind the plain wooden fence between that home, and the one next to it..
And when you look at the photo in the kitchen, there are Ma and Pa with their coffee cups, and Odumbo with a glass of water instead of coffee.
And those kitchen ceiling lights behind them all being turned on are helping to kill Polar Bears by the dozens.

Of course, according to the commenters here, I'd have to find a way to work that in around my busy schedule of manning gas station bathroom glory holes and trolling blogs in the deep recesses of my mother's basement.

I wish our flag looked that good. Something about being outside every day for a few years.
But yeah, there it is in the wrong spot, and pressing right up against the rain gutter. If I were dumb enough to put it there, I'd at least lower it a few inches to not be hitting the gutter. But, they had to work fast didn't they?
Most folks would put it on the edge, or more likely right by the front door. We have ours on a balcony over the front door, easy to put up and take down.
At least it wasn't the Obama face flag. Anybody count the stars?

Their prepared foods are good quality but a little pricey. They have some good deals in the meat department, but nothing earth-shattering, although the quality is very good.
Lobster is cruel, so they don't carry it except frozen (I guess it was frozen humanely). I am not joking.

My first exposure to unionized labor was when I worked at a software firm and we were doing a little cubicle switch. We weren't allowed to unplug our computers, roll them on our chairs to the next cubicle over, and plug them in in again. We had to call the electrician to pull the plugs out of the sockets and plug them back in. I can't remember whether they charged out department a flat fee of $10/outlet activity or whether we had to pay $40/hr at a 2-hour minimum. That plant actually used to be a factory, too, which for some reason has now shut down and continued its operations overseas. I'm sure the unionized electricians are either living well off their fat pensions or merrily destroying someone else's job somewhere.
I bet we all have a union story.

Actually, I go all the time. Call it the Hippie Market. Unfortunately, my wife is Gluten and Dairy free, so they do have things that can't be had at most markets.
No, don't be looking for general food type items or national brands for the most part. A jar of mayonnaise? Forget it. Impeller pressed canola oil mayonnaise? Yes. They do have lots of other good foods, I prefer the farmer's market for produce, but theirs is ok. The prepared foods I don't do very often, and vary from region to region. The one in DC is completely different from one in LA, or Palo Alto.
One market I like that's still fairly small is New Frontiers, in SoCal and Arizona.

....Flag placement?
I agree with what others have said about it being put there for Barky's photo-op. .....There is a second story window, above that garage door....which would be the optimum place to put a flag.
There are a lot of other places on that house....from looking at the photos in the article.....where a flag mount would've made more sense. ....That flag was put where it is, so it would be hanging behind Barky.
It also looks brand new. ....Which is not in itself a big thing, since they conceivably might've wanted to put a new flag out for the occasion. ....But the placement right over Barky's head is suspect and is likely stage craft.

Our local Whole Foods was outrageously priced until Fairway opened up three miles away. They proceeded to get their asses kicked for a year before they figured out that they need to [dirty word alert] compete to stay in business.
Prices came down significantly, so I shop there occasionally, especially for specialty items.
I agree that their prepared stuff is overrated. It's good, but not great. And it is very expensive!

If they have what they call "boneless short ribs," grab some. It's the top of the tri-tip (I think), and it's nicely marbled, really flavorful and great for grilling. It's not extremely tender, but the flavor is great. They sell it for about $8/lb. around here.

I think it's on the outside of the door opening, so it probably won't get hit. But I would bet a large sum of money that the flag was installed shortly before this photo-op, and will be taken down shortly after.
Look how far the crowd is kept from his royal highness!

Depending on the particular market, they can have some awesome stuff in the meat department. One WF I go to has all kinds of fish burgers, and fish and shellfish sausages! They have good kebabs, marinated meats and things like that as well - so yes - that I would recommend. I tend to do everything myself, so I don't do even that sort of prepared food often. And with my wife - you have to know every ingredient.
Soy sauce for instance - isn't soy sauce. It's fermented wheat with soy added. So I have to get organic Tamari.
On the upside with her diet I lost like 50 lbs, weigh what I did in College and have a BMI of 23. Too bad I'm a hundred years old.

So in addition to our individual encounters with unions in the private sector. .....We are all victims of the monopoly that government unions enjoy, in being funded by our tax dollars.

The flag holder is inside the garage, meaning you could never fly the flag unless your garage door was open.

He's Barack Obama. He doesn't go to the shitty unsafe neighborhoods where people with sporadic work history and bad credit get automagically approved for a home loans b/c the Carter and Clinton adminstrations decided borrower's probability of repayment was irrelevant and deemed not disapproving applications for those ZIP codes an illegal act of racism.
He would never set foot in the crappy part of Milwaukee I used to work in, even though everyone who lives there worships him (at least, until the gay marriage thing, and even now, more likely than not). He goes to River Hills, avg home value even now in the seven figures.

I know the exact date they drove by my house because there was a white Nissan Altima in my driveway. I had rented the car to drive to Atlanta, packed it for the trip, and on my way out of town stopped to look at a Jeep and bought it. I moved my luggage from the rental to my Jeep and left the rental at the dealership for three days before returning it.
