It Looks Like Fauxcahontas Plagiarized Her 'Pow Wow Chow' Recipes

Howie Carr released evidence that appears to confirm Ms. Warren may have plagiarized at least three of the five recipes she submitted to the 1984 Pow Wow Chow cookbook edited by her cousin Candy Rowsey.
Two of the possibly plagiarized recipes, said in the Pow Wow Chow cookbook to have been passed down through generations of Oklahoma Native American members of the Cherokee tribe, are described in a New York Times News Service story as originating at Le Pavilion, a fabulously expensive French restaurant in Manhattan. . . .
The two recipes, "Cold Omelets with Crab Meat" and "Crab with Tomato Mayonnaise Dressing," appear in an article titled Â“Cold Omelets with Crab Meat,Â” written by Pierre Franey of the New York Times News Service that was published in the August 22, 1979 edition of the Virgin Islands Daily News . . . .

Leahy goes on to say that particular recipe is a word-for-word copy, with one exception: "Ms. Warren says, 'Let cook until firm and lightly brown . . .' and Mr. Franey says 'Let cook until firm and lightly browned . . . ."

Oh, my. When people are willing to lie that easily for little or no reason, they'll lie about anything. Someone should start reviewing her academic papers.

One more thing: Didn't anyone consider the threshold question before that book was published? Cherokees ate cold omelets with crab meat?

I thought Cherokees ate Italian crab bruschetta.

Heh. Exactly. .....While they may eat crab meat now...it's not what you would consider to be a 'traditional' food found in recipes that are unique to the Cherokee tribe.

218 The rule is if you make some change in a recipe it become yours. It can be to add or omit an ingredient, change an amount or alter a step in the cooking procedure but there has to be a culinary change of some type not just a change in wording. Even then it is polite to acknowledge that yours is a variation on a famous original.

Cookbooks that are compilations from volunteers often violate the above rule. One reason is when recipes got clipped out of newspapers, magazines or from the back of packages then hand copied onto cards they often got separated from their source. Today they are downloaded complete with the attributions so everyone knows Great Aunt Tilly's crayfish pie was from the Food Network or Cooks Illustrated.

Warren's recipes don't look like they came from an old family recipe file. They look like what was being served in trendy urban cafes in the 1980s. She should have acknowledged the sources.

You guys have to think the worst of poor Elizabeth Warren. There's a simple explanation. The recipes were clearly developed during the French and Indian war and simultaneously passed down to Warren through her Cherokee ancestors and through the French to Le Pavilion. The removal of the Â“edÂ” from browned is simply proof of my theory. Clearly the Â“edÂ” was lost as the recipe was translated to English from Cherokee and from French to English.

246 It's not even that hard to avoid plagiarizing a recipe. The ingredients can't be copyrighted because you can't copyright a list. The instructions, however, are copyrighted. So if you want to "steal" a recipe you just re-write the instructions. If you're smart you'll vary the ingredients a little to make it less obvious. Then it's an "homage" not plagiarism.
