It's 11:52 Am- Have You Hugged Your Garbage Man Today?
— DrewM

Mitt Romney's garbageman thinks Mitt's a mean guy because he's never hugged him or offered him something to drink.

Seriously.

The ad is from AFSCME, the largest public employees union.

Here's my question for the butthurt garbageman...Have you ever thanked Mitt Romney or anyone else for working hard to pay the taxes that cover your salary?

It's bad enough so many public sector workers demand high wages and outrageous benefit and pension plans, now they expect us to kiss their asses for the privilege.

In Phila, the trashmen used to bang on your doors at Christmas time, say "Merry Christmas" and hold their hand out. You were expected to give them a cash gift.

This thuggery lasted until the 80s, and only stopped because a TV crew exposed them getting drunk and shooting hoops during work time.

This guy is driving a 'yanker truck'!

At least that's what they're showing...

Those trucks have a mechanical arm, attached to the side of the truck.

The arm extends out, grabs the bin...and yanks it up over the top of the truck to empty it.

The guys who drive those trucks...never get out of the trucks.

The same type trucks are used in my area.

So...how is anyone going to be 'giving him a hug'...or 'giving him waters, or gatoraid'?

What a crock!

59 Regarding this commercial, can we use a complaint similar to the one the Democrats used back in 1988 in response to the Willie Horton ad? For example, we can claim that the Left is trying to further divide the country by appealing to race by using a black garbageman in order to maximize black turnout for the election. Of course, we all know that if Romney wins, the Left will actually blame the Right for the resulting race riots that will take place in various urban areas instead of admitting that they deliberately appealed to racial divisiveness in order to win the election.

105 The Bradley effect, or more commonly (in Virginia anyway) known as the Wilder effect refers to voters being shamed into telling pollsters they support a black candidate when in actuality they do not. The voter feels guilty or wants to hide the fact they do not support the black candidate for fear of being labelled a racist. So they hide their real intentions until they can cast their secret ballot on Election Day. While the left would have you believe the Wilder effect is a veiled attempt by voters to hide their inherent racism, the fact of the matter is voters will be cautious due to the perception of racism.

110 This commercial brought to you by George Jetson, garbage man.

The truck in the commercial is one of those where the homeowner has to push the bin to the curb and then the garbage truck drives up, they push a lever, push a knob and the hydraulic arm grasps the bin and lifts it and dumps it.

That lazy bastard doesn't lift a damned thing except his fork at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

15, 16 tons a day, my ass you lying sack of shit.

The modern view of the presidency is supposed to be someone who will take a personal, specific interest in you and make sure your life is provided with balm and comfort when your body breaks down, with high-paying if unskilled work when your body is well, and be your bestest friend evar because he really, really wants to know you. This is the modern view, despite the fact that everyone who believes this knows it is a lie... I doubt Peggy Joseph got that kitchen. I don't know what planet this is any longer.

maybe one of them are insulted at his lack of insigtht that they may want a thank you and a coffee, besides their nice paycheck and pension.

in fact perhps garbage men , mailmen, etc should all wave and smile say thank you for their nice paycheck to all their customers that help provide food and a roof for their families?

159 I am assuming this deal is similar for most large city garbage collectors.

NYC 20 years of service retirement scheme.

Service Retirement Benfits

If you have 20 or more years of service regardless of age, you are eligible to receive a Service Retirement Benefit equal to:

- 50% times Final Average Salary (FAS) for the first 20 years of service

plus

- 1-1/2% times Final Compensation for each year of service in excess of 20 years.

plus

1% times Final Compensation for each year of credited service other than allowable sanitation service.

Not a bad deal if you ask me.

This scheme is typical to ALL municipal unions.

He's lying.

If we are to go by what is being shown...in the ad...then, he's lying.

They show two 'yanker trucks'...and the bins-on-wheels that are designed to be yanked up, by that type of truck.

In my area...there is only one driver per truck.

The driver never gets out.

The driver never touches the bins.

If you don't have your bin positioned right...on the side of the street, or road...then, they don't yank it.

But then, I live in a Right to Work state...where they can't load up more workers than are needed to do the job.

The fact remains, though, that they are showing us the type of truck and bins...where the garbage men do not have to lift a damn thing.

No?  Ok then, Dick.  Tell me, exactly how many hugs do you typically receive while making your rounds?  5?  10?  Who are they?  Are they usually gay men?  Are you gay, Dick?  When you don't get a hug, are you depressed?  Angry?  Have you filed a grievance with the union?  Is there a "hug clause" in the contract?

Do you give better service to people who hug you?  Are you insane?  Do you look through people's trash? What's the best thing you've found? Again, are you gay?

185 What am I missing? I mean, usually you can kind of tell what demographic or who a campaign is trying to appeal to, even if you think it's complete idiocy (see "War on Women".) But this just seems like a waste. Who is the audience here? Butt-hurt "public servants"? Men who want to look like sissy-pants whiners? Who would change their vote after seeing this? Obama already has the government employee pants wetting emotional basket case vote sewn up, what does this accomplish?

An ex-Secret Service guy wrote a book about the various prezzies and how they were viewed/treated by them. Link in my sig. Here's the bit about the current occupants:

BARACK & MICHELLE OBAMA: ” Clinton all over again” – hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service. He is egotistical and cunning; looks you in the eye and appears to agree with you, but turns around and does the opposite—untrustworthy. He has temper tantrums.

She is a complete bitch, who hates anybody who is not black; hates the military; and looks at the Secret Service as servants.

199 I have private trash service.  I write a check once a year, and they take away my trash every week, including holidays.

In the two times I've had a problem/issue, I've picked up the phone, called the company, left a message, the owner personally called me back that day and we've resolved it amicably.   Not that I ever threatened to do so, or would, but the owner knows that if I'm not happy with my service, with one phone call I could take my trash business over to his local competitor.

Imagine that. . .the private sector doing things more efficiently than public sector (let alone with public sector union involvement).

In the meantime, you think President Obama even knows what his garbageman looks like?

Exactly.

And that's the type of trucks that they are showing in this ad!

We call them 'yanker trucks'.

And the guys here never get out of the trucks.

They never touch the bins.

Sometimes...here in OK...the wind blows the bins over.

The garbage truck drivers don't get out and put them right-side-up...in order for the mechanical arm to yank them.

They just drive on by.

Wait a sec. This sounds an awful lot like what middle class people pay good money to do at a gym: weight lifting. Except this actually has a practical purpose.

How do you manage to be so chubby while getting this exercise, Richard? Exercise you're being well paid to undertake, BTW. You should be in better shape than the average citizen when you're 55, 60 and getting paid to be that way.

Yeah, it isn't the most pleasant job but crushing hardship it ain't.

do the residents acknowledge you? Probably not. You come while they're still asleep or after they've left for their jobs. It isn't like you have a reason to ever interact with anyone living on your route unless something is seriously wrong.

Does Richard Hayes know who picks up the garbage from his house? Does anyone living there know the garbage pickup personnel well enough to recognize them on the street? Or do they have the same relationship to those workers as virtually everyone else?

Posted by: epobirs at October 02, 2012 08:32 AM (kcfmt)

This is another example of how unions ruin industry. They take a job that should be a pass-through low-pay temp position for young people and turn it into a career. so you've got 50 year-olds collecting garbage instead of supervising, etc.

Grocery store checkers are my pet peeve in this area. any 18 year-old can learn to run a register in a few hours. But we have union people working those registers, making high pay and getting huge benes while cutting young people out  of  what should be an entry-level position.

And the result is higher prices to the consumer.

255 The following is also true of NYC garbage collectors.

Basic Annual Salary
The average salary after 5-1/2 years is 68K. Average salary after 20 years is
85K.

Overtime and Premium Pay
In addition to regular overtime of time and a half, New York's garbage collectors also receive the following: double time for work on Sundays, including snow-removal work; time and a half for the seventh and eighth hours worked on Saturdays; a guaranteed minimum of eight hours paid at time and a half if workers are required to do snow removal outside of their regular working hours; time and a half for work on 12 holidays; a 10 percent increase for working night shifts; and double time on certain other days.

Benifits
Benefits paid to New York City workers are generous. Sanitation worker benefits include a choice of health and hospitalization plans; 18 days of vacation during the first four years, 20 vacation days during the fifth year and 25 days starting in the sixth year; 12 paid holidays; retirement pay; and spouse or domestic partner benefits.

Longevity Pay
After five years on the job, sanitation workers receive an annual payment as a "longevity differential." The payment starts at $1,495 and increases every five years until it tops out at $4,195 per year for workers who have been on the job 20 years or longer.

And all of this crap is 'cooked' into the final pension payout so that the average annual pension payout is roughly 75K a year.

So when they 'retire' they are never truly off the books as their payouts are substantial.

Now multiply this lunacy over the all of the other unions and its a recipe for fiscal disaster all around.

Of course, by "recycle" I mean, put it in plastic garbage bags, let them haul 'em to the landfill.  In a few million years the sun will go red giant, baking everything on the surface of the Earth, and sending the plasma streaming out into interstellar space.

Eventually that plasma will get sucked into another star, which will shine down on people who are probably not stupid enough to believe a few hundred million plastic bottles means shit, in terms of actual tonnage or ability to impact the environment beyond a few years of untidyness.

I was encouraged by the steady traffic on Day 1 of early voting.

Saw a guy at the gas station the other day with an unofficial Romney bumper sticker.  He said he makes a different one each week to keep them fresh.

I feel very good about this election and about the Romney org's op here in Ohio.  Watch what they do, not what they say.

Yesterday the Blaze had this story and it turns out that Romney himself used the same words to describe the way he felt the day he decided to be a garbage man while he was Governor.

It is in his book, No Apologies.... Mitt spent time doing the jobs of regular Americans to get the view from the ground.  And he said he was invisible to people on the street... just like the guy in the ad.

Which makes the ad a complete lie.  Again.

I'm pretty sure the other garbage men were very unhappy when Mitt pulled the wrong lever and dumped the truch out on the road and they all had to clean it up... which shows... maybe everyone doesn't have the same skill sets.

359 Didn't read all the comments but a search for the word "monopoly" came up empty.  Most urban places I have lived there is a monopoly on trash collection and they provide exactly the level of service we have learned to expect from unionized monopolies.  If I had a garbage man I would be more likely to kick him in the nuts than hug him.

I actually had a nice chat with my garbage man when I moved into my neighborhood.  And he dropped my new cans. His name is Rudy.

My grandson had just graduated from Pre-school and when asked what he wanted to be when he grew up he said he wanted to be a garbage man and drive the cool truck... I told Rudy that.

Rudy said he always has little fans watching from windows.  And has watched lots of kids grow up in the neighborhood.  He pointed up the street and said a little boy there, was him for Halloween one year,

The boy had a cardboard garbage truck with the name Rudy on it!  It was a highlight of his career!

Any honest work is honorable... maybe it is a Mormon concept, I don't know, but I'm pretty sure Mitt believes it too.

Buddy, STFU. You have no idea what types of jobs many of us have done in our past or are doing currently. I've never been a garbageman but I've done jobs on the same level as that (e.g., construction laborer working outdoors in a New England winter) so that I could pay to go to college.

We are only attacking the guy because of his ridiculously idiotic attack on Romney. Richard Hayes is a grown man who has decided to record a commercial that Romney's a bad person simply because he's a Republican ... a Republican who donated over $4 million to charities last year. Hayes is being used by the same people who claim to care about people in his situation.

372 You know in the South when we still had garbage men that picked up your can from behind your house and emptied it, they got tips, usually a fifth of booze.  Now we have to lug out the can and a truck with a lift takes the can off the street.  We never see who is in the truck and it changes.

I am not tipping the crane.  Sorry.

Also, what we're "dismissive" and "even scornful of" is union thugs like this guy bashing Romney simply because he disagrees with his politics and the politics of his labor union. I have nowhere near the amount of money that Romney has but I've never met my garbagemen either .. after all, they pick up the garbage when I'm at work and never stop by other than when they pick up the garbage. I do know that I (and even moreso Romney) have paid large amounts of property taxes funding their jobs, which pay fairly well, especially considering the "skill level" it requires.

Posted by: Slappy at October 02, 2012 09:38 AM (LTbLf)

376 With property taxes in Cali being about 1.2% of sale price, Mittens is paying about $140K a year in property taxes, so I would think Mittens taxes pay this guy's salary, and pays for the truck he drives.

378 from the Yahoo article about these fine people:

"Mitt Romney's '47 percent' videotape revealed his contempt for tens of millions of Americans," AFSCME President Lee Saunders wrote in a blog post. "Romney seems only to be relaxed and at ease when he is surrounded by other millionaires and people willing to pay $50,000 to share a meal with him. And it is only those wealthy donors who get to know what is really on his mind. They spend more money than most Americans make in a year to ask Mitt Romney questions and listen to his reckless banter about Americans like Richard Hayes."

Tell me this doesn't sound like Barky: "seems only to be relaxed and at ease when he is surrounded by other millionaires and people willing to pay $50,000 to share a meal with him. And it is only those wealthy donors who get to know what is really on his mind."

380 Richard, Richard, really, picking up 15 tons of trash a day. I sorry that you were placed into this disingenuous commercial by obams flacks and union thugs. You are diving an automated garbage truck. It has a hydraulic arm that reaches out and lifts the garbage into the top of the truck. The shot of you scurrying around and moving the empty trash bins is STAGED to give the impression that you my friend are actually lifting 15 tons. Get back into your air conditioned cab turn up the hip hop and enjoy your well paying job.

Frankly, it's disturbing that this guy --or anyone for that matter-- considers the no-skill, labor-intensive job of "garbageman" a career.  It's certainly a job, but no one should ever think that it's going to produce sufficient wages to count as a career over 30 or 40 years, or that it even warrants it.

Technically, this means she lives on a different street, but that's not important right now.
