It's Friday.
— LauraW

Now fortified with 100% more nostalgic 90's lunacy.

The gay vampire look was very hip back then. Don't act like you don't remember.

Open thread, darling hearts.

34 Okay, enough of that, and back to obsessing about politics.  I've been thinking about the unbelievable roster of really good, young and rising folks in the GOP.  Just off the top of my head, I see Ryan, Walker, McDonnell, Jindal, Christie, Martinez, Haley, and Rubio.  I know there are many others.  The Dems, by contrast look like tapioca night at the fire station bingo night.  This is doubtless a blessing, but also a curse.  If I were an ambitious young GOP politician, I'd be getting a little nervous about the opportunities for future advancement.  It's gonna get crowded in the line for preazy.

52 Another thought: part of what made Clint's speech so compelling was that you weren't entirely sure if he was acting or if he was senile.  That uncertainty maintained the tension and kept your interest, at the cost of missing some of his gems.

I listened to it again this morning, and since I knew how that it turned out well for him, I got to savor all of the nuances.  It really was a masterpiece, and people will pass it around and revisit it.

In part: I start to watch this guy, the scowl on his face, and it occurs to me that his role in Gran Torino was more of a biography than anything. //Well, here's Time magazine (yea, apparently they're still around) today: There was one semi-disturbing moment, when Clint screamed “We own this country!” He got a standing ovation for that one, and it’s possible that the virtually all-white crowd was picking up a bit of Gran Torino you-know-what-I-mean-by-we. http://tinyurl.com/9a5r8dh

68 I think most of the time your favorite decade for music is directly correlated to your age. When I was young 15-25 people failed me but music never did. There was always a song I could sing along with that made me feel better. I think that's why when you turn on the radio and a song plays that spikes a memory, it's way better than just picking it from you Ipod. It's almost exciting.

The 60's and 70's were not as diverse and some of the artists were still relevant in the 80's as well.

Heavy metal and all of it's derivations rap and all of it's derivations, punk and all of it's derivations came to form in the 80's and mixed with pop groups and solo artists from 80's and earlier.

With the exception of classic 70's rock, the seventies sucked   music-wise.      Between disco and the James Taylor feely-namby-pamby pussy crap, I thank God every day that I only spent two full months in that godawful decade.

The sixties were    okay.      My dislike of the Beatles is already documented, but    the early sixties had some really good stuff.  There was other good music peppered throughout, too.

The eighties, on the other hand, RULED.

Then along came the nineties and sucked all over again.

106 Naturally, by the time I get around to posted some quasi-entertaining comment, at least two new posts are up, and my readership dwindles to Chris Matthews' audience levels. So screw it: I'm reposting my comment here!

Everybody keeps beating up on Clint and the scheduler who put him in prime time, but I wonder... what other feature could have drawn a larger audience for the speeches of Rubio and Romney? I'm guessing the programmers' discussion went something like this:

A: I don't know about this Clint Eastwood skit.... Seems kinda disjointed....
B: I don't care of Eastwood comes out and picks his nose for ten minutes! You want the choir nodding at the sermon, or you wanna get more sinners in to hear the Word?
A: Hey, I'm Jewish!
B: Yeah? Well, I'm Unitarian. Who gives a shit? Now, shut the fuck up and get Clint ready. Use a cattle prod if you have to.

I actually didn't care for Rubio's speech much.  There was some great stuff about his family coming to America, but that was about it.  People have grabbed onto the "He not a bad person, just a bad President" line (not an exact quote), but that struck me as having schoolyard mentality.

One quote I DID enjoy though, was a one-line commentary on ObamaCare, describing it as the sort of thing that caused our ancestors to leave the countries they came from. It reminded me of a line from Ryan's speech, which said something like that it "had no place in a free society".

I liked Ryan's speech the best, but I don't concern myself with the tear-jerky "what a great guy" stuff.  I don't care if he loves his mom (although that's nice) - I just need him to get the policy right.  But I realize that that's just me, and that this is how they needed to play it.

For Your Pleasure was awesome.  Grey Lagoons is one of my favorite songs of all-time.

Ferry took a bit of a musical walk-about later (though I liked a lot of it) but he still has the voice and does the old stuff as well as ever.

I agree, Peter Gabriel is great.  And I do love his wife's voice.  Not too many of her songs, but a hell of a voice that really hits home on a few.

Sam Elliot in Gettysburg    delivered one of my favorite movie soliloquies of all time      as General Buford:

"You know whats going to happen here in the morning? The whole damn reb army is going to be here. They'll move through this town, occupy these hills on the other side and when our people get here Lee will have the high ground. There will be the devil to pay! The high ground! Meade will come in slowly, cautiously. New to command. They'll be on his back in Washington. Wire hot with messages 'Attack! Attack!'. So he will set up a ring around these hills. And when Lee's army is nicely entrenched behind fat rocks on the high ground, Meade will finally attack, if he can coordinate the army. Straight up the hillside, out in the open, in that gorgeous field of fire. We will charge valiantly... and be butchered valiantly! And afterwards men in tall hats and gold watch fobs will thump their chest and say what a brave charge it was. Devin, I've led a soldier's life, and I've never seen anything as brutally clear as this.

Just reading that makes me tear up.

And     I submit the way Sam Elliot says "the high ground!" as    one of the hottest things ever said   on film.

The one great thing about that Cure song when I was a radio DJ for AFRTS back in the day  - well, there were two great things about it - was that it was a natural for playing on Friday. And the other best thing about it was that the instrumental up-ramp for it was nearly a whole minute long. I could make that the last song of the hour on my playlist, and do my outro, promo the next hour and read about half of the spot reader book over that up-ramp.

Too much of it sounds the same, and I can't stand a lot of it, but he has a few excellent songs: "We've Got Tonight," "Even Now," and (the massively over-played) "Hollywood Nights" and "Night Moves."

Who I can't stand in this vein is John Mellencamp. I like "Aint Even Done with the Night," but everything else by him I will hit that button faster than Kate Upton popping out of a chocolate pudding cake.

281 Sixty percent of MilwaukeeÂ’s black voters have disappeared.

Democrats have feared for years that one of the particular challenges of running campaigns in 2012 would be simply locating their voters. The partyÂ’s constituencies (young people, immigrants, minorities) tend to be among the most mobile demographic groups. And as NPR speculated this week in an analysis of battleground-state foreclosure figures, the housing crisis will likely only have made things more difficult for Democrats looking for their supporters.

New data from Milwaukee give an indication of how dire the DemocratsÂ’ disappearing-voter problem already is. This spring, the League of Young Voters, which was created to mobilize young minority communities, collaborated with the liberal Wisconsin Voices coalition to dispatch teams of young canvassers. Starting in April, they spent eight weeks knocking on 120,882 doors across 208 of MilwaukeeÂ’s 317 wards to raise awareness of the gubernatorial recall election scheduled for June. The doors had one thing in common: the voter file said they were all home to a registered voter whom a commercial data vendor had flagged as likely to be African-American.

But the voter file represented a fiction, or at least a reality that had rapidly become out of date.

Boy BFF and I were driving who knows where one night in a terrible sleet storm. Don't Fear the Reaper came on and I dove to change the station because that's tempting fate. The next three stations I switched to all were playing it, though at different points in the song. Boy BFF looks over and goes "Yeah. I'm going to pull over now because we're going to die." It was v v freaky indeed.

Convention musings:

This was a successful convention.

Ryan's coming out party was a success. Mitt's acceptance speech was a success. Eastwood got a lot of attention, and upped the listeners fro Romney. He also wounded Obama and Obama made a fool of himself by responding to a Hollywooder who's not running for anything. This tells the Romney camp to keep finding surrogates to mock Mr. Thin-Skin.

The only thing I heard about protestors was them dressing up like vaginas and making fools of themselves.

Now comes the campaign. Undecided voters are just now starting to pay attention.

The convention ball is in the democrat's court. I say they blow it with all the war on women crud.

311 When King Cnut had reigned for twenty years, he died at Shaftesbury and was buried in the ancient monastery at Winchester. About the power of this king a little should be stated. For no English king ever had such wide-ranging authority. For he was at once the lord of all Denmark, of all England, of all Norway, and also of Scotland.

Indeed, apart from a number of wars in which he shone greatly, he conducted himself gracefully and magnificently in three matters:

The first is, that he married his daughter to the Roman Emperor with unutterable splendor.

The second, that going to Rome he arranged a reduction by a half in toll dues along the road that leads though Gaul to Rome.

The third, that with the greatest vigor he commanded that his chair should be set on the shore, when the tide began to rise. And then he spoke to the rising sea saying “You are part of my dominion, and the ground that I am seated upon is mine, nor has anyone disobeyed my orders with impunity. Therefore, I order you not to rise onto my land, nor to wet the clothes or body of your Lord”. But the sea carried on rising as usual without any reverence for his person, and soaked his feet and legs. Then he moving away said: “All the inhabitants of the world should know that the power of kings is vain and trivial, and that none is worthy the name of king but He whose command the heaven, earth and sea obey by eternal laws”. Therefore King Cnut never afterwards placed the crown on his head, but above a picture of the Lord nailed to the cross, turning it forever into a means to praise God, the great king. By whose mercy may the soul of King Cnut enjoy peace.

Frankly, there is no proof that any body can slow the rise of the oceans. As for healing the planet, placing solar panels all over the Western US is anything but a healing venture.

Anybody remember them getting in trouble after the murders on the Long Island Railroad? Black racist shoots at least a dozen people, kills several and is captured by the passangers as he attempts to reload. Targeted whites and left a note saying he hated them. One of the Living Color guys says he sees why he did it. A Baltimore DJ flatly refused to play the band that day and announced why. He then got the backing of the station. Pretty sure they forced an apology.

336 From Pastorius (me) at the Astute Bloggers: Here's what the article I read said of Eastwood and his speech, "Eastwood seemed to speak without notes, without a Tele-Prom-Ter and without a clue of what he wanted to say. ... He rambled about how America needed a businessman in charge. He came very close to using the f-word, making several feints at it. And he ran some ongoing gag about how he'd talk as long as he wanted to. The weirdness seemed to discomfit the audience... He may have been incoherent. But live TV is set up exactly for the Good, the Bad and the Spacey." After reading that, I thought, "Oh no, one of the men I admire the most, for having remained intensely creative into his 80's - indeed some people have even said he has done his best work of late - is finally losing it. I don't want to watch this." And then I watch is, and as I am, I'm looking for some disjointed sentences, or addled thoughts, something that resembled the man described in the article linked above. But, I find none. All the thoughts flow from one to the next. Here's what I think may have confused people. People who watch TV are used to watching TV actors and anchormen and other people who have mastered the art of television. But, Eastwood is a movie actor. In fact, he is a movie actor who is specifically known for mumbling and growling most of his lines. He doesn't do the comedic rhythm of sitcoms. His specialty is speech that sounds natural, as it explodes off the big screen. Here we find him acting the part of a man who gets to "have a chat" (his words) with the President. He is speaking the way such a man would. He is not yukking it up. The man he is playing here (the part he is acting) is not confused. He is stammering because he is attempting to interrupt the self-important bloviations of the man from whom we have come to expect no answers as he sits in his empty chair, filling his empty suit; Barack Obama. It was actually very well-acted stagecraft. The fact that the other person had to be imagined sitting there, may have made it even harder for Libs, who are used to getting the entirety of their reality spoonfed to them with the glib comedic timing off the TV-heads of the MSM. http://www.astuteblogger.blogspot.com/2012/08/clint-eastwoods-speech-at-rnc-set.html

351 That’s because MSNBC offers counterprogramming, not coverage. All that arch sarcasm and partisan brio may rev up the cable channel’s fans, but it constrains — and stains — NBC News, its corporate sibling, which is still the country’s No. 1 source in the evening.

Bruce Springsteen.

Thunder Road almost makes me cry sometimes, it is a song from my youth.

I have seen him in concert several times, but the last was in 1980.  He's a great stage performer, but is kind of a jerk, and not just because he's become an outspoken lefty jerk.  There's more to this, but for me, I have outgrown him.

I understand the attraction, because I felt it once. But as the song goes, "those days are gone forever, over a long time ago, oh yeah...."

The BEST live show I have ever seen was Dire Straits.  I would pay to see Mark Knopfler anytime

For some strange reason, some Brits pronounce the word "cinema" as "cinemar".  They add that R on the end of it and make it sound weird.

I was over in England in the early part of this year and I asked about how many different dialects there were.  The two guys I asked were stumped because they couldn't count that high.  There are about 30 different accents and dialects within the same postal code, depending on which side of the street you lived on.

372 > Thunder Road almost makes me cry sometimes, it is a song from my youth.

Yep. My older brother--who was kind of my father figure before he was stabbed to death by his girl friend--taught me how to drive listening to Springsteen's "Darkness on the Edge of Town." He even had a Camaro and was into the "Racing in the Streets"-type stuff.

"Born in the USA" was already out by then, but my brother had Springsteen's older stuff. On eight-track. And that's what he played.

When I bought my second car--my first fun one--early Springsteen is what I played when just driving it around into the wee-wee hours of the morning.

For all that, I ignore the many disappointments since. For example, although I think Patti Sciafla (sp?) is a much better match for him than Julianne Phillips, I thought the way he swapped them out was not the behavior of a man who claims to espouse so much idealism. You can talk (and sing) all the good principles you want, but you'd better live them.

Funny.  Does anybody remember some world concert that Sting, Springsteen, Peter Gabriel and some other guy (famous, foreign black musician or some such) did?  Probably back in the late 80's, early 90's.  They were concerting all over "the world" to lecture, er, plead with people to pay attention to bad stuff going on all over the place (can't remember the exact cause; is that relevant?).

Anyway, Sting was with Trudie but not divorced from his wife, Sprinsteen was with Patty and still married to Julianne, and Gabriel was travelling with Rosana Arquette and he was a married.  I remember thinking that here these three sucktards are, asking people to commit to some lofty worldly cause when they can't commit to the most basic, important relationship in their life.  Ironic, no?

424 EC: Guess I was trying to compress too much in there. My mother and father were divorced before I was born. So my older brother was always kind of my father figure.

His being stabbed to death while still young is part of the reason, I think, for my sentimentalism about Springsteen. I grew up, Springsteen became less cool, but my brother is frozen in time--back there with the cooler version of Springsteen.

At the Fenway Park show, Springsteen opened with the original solo-piano version of "Thunder Road" that is the first song on the "Live 75-85" box set.  Most beautiful thing I ever heard.  I could have left right after that and been happy.  It's still the greatest rock song ever written IMO.  Every few years, WXPN in Philly does a countdown of the top rock songs and "Thunder Road" always comes out #1.

538 Cool Polliwogette.  Its the slog to finish the story that sometimes defeat.

Some writers have a couple stories in different stages.  And when blocked will see if they can write the other story.

The NaNoWriMo contest is to get one to the finish line.  In my cabin, one person started strong and put up 18k words and then stopped.  Another has 700 words and yet another 0.  I am the closest to the finish line with 44.5k words. So yes back to writing.

Could not agree more. I will Dare, Here Comes a Regular, Bastids of Young, Left of the Dial, Can't Hardly Wait- shoot, even stuff he wrote for cartoons (Love You in the Fall) and what appears in movies (Waitin' for Somebody, Dyslexic Heart in Singles) kicks solid arse.

"Too bad Tommy Stinson is busy earning a paycheck in Guns 'N' Roses."

Did not know that. Interesting.

Clint wasn't giving a speech, he was performing a one man / one act play.  It wasn't about telling viewers a blatant message; it was about convencing them that it's ok to view Obama in a negative light and guiding them along in doing so.

588 Cut 'n pasted from The Corner and comments there: According to a new poll conducted by Democracy Corps (the James Carville/Stan Greenberg-founded firm), Mitt Romney is leading by 16 points among independents, 54% to Barack ObamaÂ’s 38% -- a double-digit lead. Since 1980, no Democratic presidential candidate has won the White House while losing Independents at the same time. It is close to mathematically impossible.
