28 Not to be too much of a dick, but I don't completely understand why the (overwhelmingly white) NZ population do the maori war chant thing. Especially the chants in a language they don't speak. Do the dance, but at least speak English. Seems to show a lack of respect for their own culture and language. It'd be like if the Marines did Navajo war dance, in Navajo. At one level the maori war chants are cool and emotional. But it's also a sign of white people desperately searching for some other culture to be "authentic". You can chant a violent song in English about how much you love your brother and will avenge his death. Maori culture isn't any more pure or authentic than the English culture of the white NZ people. Navajo culture isn't any more noble than American culture. Why not look back to anglo-saxon culture? The anglo-saxons had a pretty decent warrior culture. If nothing else, they kicked the asses of the Maori and Navajo.

Just guessing here, but that may be part of it, along with an unknown warrior walking them home. Symbolism and such. I definitely have something in my eye at the moment, so am not thinking as clearly as I would normally. As far as chanting in English, my vote is for "whatever". NZ can send their warriors home however they choose, and it's pretty clear that the Maori chant was embraced by the pale-faces in the group. NZ is its own place, and gets to define its own rituals.

63 This is a traditional haka, performed by the 1/2nd NZ for a fallen soldier as the hearse was driven to the cemetery. It is used to exult in living in the presence of the threat of death. It is meant to raise the spirit and zeal of a Maori warrior. It is tradition for the New Zealand All-Blacks football team (soccer) to perform this prior to a match. There is a great post of this on You Tube where the All Blacks perform this during a match with the British side. Very impressive, it includes subtitles in English.

197 I would bet that the soldiers in that Hearse are Maori and the unit is doing them proud. I have no doubt that the unit would play the pipes and Amazing grace for a white fallen soldier as well.
