US Forces Deployed To Jordan, To Patrol Syrian Border
— Ace

How did this happen? Where did this come from?

peaking at a NATO conference of defense ministers in Brussels, Panetta said the U.S. has been working with Jordan to monitor chemical and biological weapons sites in Syria and also to help Jordan deal with refugees pouring over the border from Syria. The troops are also building a headquarters for themselves.

But the revelation of U.S. military personnel so close to the 19-month-old Syrian conflict suggests an escalation in the U.S. military involvement in the conflict, even as Washington pushes back on any suggestion of a direct intervention in Syria.

Do we no longer debate these decisions? This came out of nowhere (or at least it was never highlighted by the Administration or the press) so I have no instantaneous opinion on the advisability of it.

I do seem to remember a time when troop movements into Theaters of War got a brief national debate, and a formal announcement of the Administration's plan to do so (or consideration of doing so).

Bang. Troops in Jordan. They were kind enough to let us know after-the-fact.

And now we have an alternative Foreign Policy issue to talk about in the VP debate and Prez. Debate #2.

There was no way Obama would go into the Foreign Policy debate with Benghazi the #1 issue. It still is #1, but he'll try to change that.

20 We deploy units all the time. Usually they get around the whole debate issue by calling them training teams or something along those lines. If it's just guys to monitor for chemical weapons, this is not a big deal. If we suddenly discover that we're staging a combat task force, that's something else. There's more than enough bad moves made by this Administration than to criticize something that presidents have been doing since the Cold War.

Great.  How many?  Enough to be effective?  Or just enough to be a target for the bad guys?  Are they trained in chemical warfare defense and capable?

If someone had not messed up the Iraq Forces agreement, we could have had a mechanized brigade or two on the Syrian Border.  That might have been an effective force to sieze or destroy the Syrian Chemical weapons.  Possibly by using artillery and rockets from the border.  Or using the same artillery to destroy the Syrian air defenses so the Air Force could do the job.

But no, planning and foresight like that would have been too hard.  And Bush was the idiot.

Couple of points folks:

As a former 'cold warrior' myself, I don't see the presence of American and Russian troops anywhere near each other--especially the Middle East--as a good thing, much less as a stabilizing infuence. Both Putin and Obama are unbounded narcissists with massive egos bordering on meglomania. Such men are just the type to grossly misread a given situation and make bad decisions under pressure.

My advice? Read Barbara Tuchmann's book, 'The Guns Of August'. Pay particular attention to the role that personalities and personality defects played in the events leading to the cataclysm that was WWI.

207 I'm with troyriser. Another good pair of books on the same topic are Robert K. Massie's Dreadnought and Castles of Steel.

Overheard on the way to Jordan (one hopes not): "So who decided to call this operation Resolute Redshirt?"

208 Bang. Troops in Jordan. They were kind enough to let us know after-the-fact. Congress needs to be doing som impeachments. But, they won't, so this shit will just happen over and over and over. We all know that Barky is an enemy who needs to be impeached, tried and punished to the fullest extent of the law. That Congress won't even talk about this possibility (and I don't give a shit whether the Senate would convict or not - that is not the point) is allowing the worst traitor in American history to continue on, unfettered. The American Socialist Superstate is here and it tastes like A.S.S. This is so fucking pathetic, though not surprising after the Suicide by Indonesian vote in 2008. I just wish we had anyone but that crybaby shithead Boner. He is almost as bad as Benedickhead Roberts in their giving aid and comfort to the treasonous Indonesian and his junta. Fucking assholes.

209 Isn't congress supposed to vote on this? What happened that we have to learn this on matt drudge's report?

214 Obama does not have a coherent foreign policy. You have no idea what he is going to do or any idea at any given moment, no idea who he considers our friends, and no idea what his objectives are. It's foreign policy from the Magic 8 Ball.

216 I suggest a massive recall to DC campaign for our Congressmen and Senators to address this. To hell with the election and their campaigns. They need to address this tomorrow.

Posted by: Tommy V at October 10, 2012 05:41 PM (ZYlKz) I couldn't disagree more. Barky has a very coherent foreign policy - anything that hurts America or American values and traditions. It's easy to predcict what Barky will do in almost any situation; whatever he thinks will hurt America the most or screw over any real American allies ... that's what Barky will do. He's been entirely consistent in this since the first day he slimed into office. Barky is on the other side. He hates America, our institutions, our foundations and us. He always has. It's the ONLY thread that runs through everything he does - within the limits of his pea-brain's very minor comprehensive abilities, of course.

219 This is a monumental gamble on Obama's part.

I know he spent some time with Kerry, but did he really have to create his own Cambodia?

This has the potential get out of control fast.

Does anybody remember when all the SDS cocksuckers went batshit crazy when Nixon sent troops into Cambodia?  Where are those fuckheads now?  Time to "take it to the streets" with your fat boilers and skullets, hippie scumbuckets.  Where's Billy Bombthrower?

220 Remember back in 2003 or so 20 tons of WMD was captured moving over the border from Syria into Jordan for an assassination attack on the ruling party/royal family/seat of government.

221 I mentioned my concern a couple months ago that when these al Queda terrorists are through with Syria, they would pour into Jordan and complete their conquest of the muslim world, so I'm glad we are in Jordan. We can't let them have Jordan. In fact, I think we should have stomped them out in Libya instead of taking their side and I think we should be bombing the shit out of them now in Syria. I'd take a neutered Ghadaffi and Assad over these violent muslim terrorists that are intent on taking over the world.

The invasion of Granada during Reagan's term was a total surpise.  Wake up in the morning, fix a cup of coffee, and then BAM! I was watching the invasion of Granada on TV.

Totally out of the blue.

224 We've been involved with the Jordanians for years.  Them asking, or allowing, us to put some boots on the ground toward Syria is probably a good thing.  I'm guessing it wasn't the Preznit's idea - more probably came from someone lower down, actually involved with the Jordanians.  Better to get on the ground early and develop some contacts than to get blindsided when the SHTF.

225 Kind of convenient timing if Obama wants to get the media to "force" Romney/Ryan to shut up about foreign policy - just say our troops are in harm's way etc...

226 Anyone can understand that Syrian refugees flooding into Jordan is bad for Jordanians, but everybody in government and the liberal media pretends not to understand that Mexicans flooding into America is bad for the Americans.

Nobody is legally forcing the Jordanians to integrate, assimilate and intermarry with the unwanted Syrians, but the American government does force White Americans to integrate, assimilate, and ultimately, inevitably intermarry with the Mexicans.

Why does the American army guard the Joranian border and not the American border? Because the government and the governing class, including the liberal mass media, is anti-White. Brown(ish) people have problems; the American government must do something (even if it's actually not good for America to be involved. White people have the same problem; damn crackas have it coming. That is how people like Eric "my people" Holder think.

This anti-White governing consensus is a serious problem. People should take it on and refuse to be intimidated by "anti-racists" who in reality are anti-White.

227 We've had troops out in western Jordan since before 9/11. SF units do liaison work with the Royal Jordanian SF guys. Then again the Jordanians coughed up SF guys for Kosovo and some other jobs. It's a pretty decent strategic partnership since Abdullah II is a good Sandhurst grad who did time as an exchange officer to the Brits. Are the Jordanians world-class troops? No. But they're still somewhat useful, and they've got location, location, location.
