— Dave in Texas

One of those verdicts where nobody is surprised

What a monster.

442 years on 45 counts.

*correction* He hasn't been sentenced, he faces that.

It ain't enough.

****

Precisely! That mother-f***er opened a charity and put on the face of a fine citizen, guiding youth through troubled times....

This was not a crime of passion. Not a crime of opportunity. This was a crime which involved repeated and long-term scheming and lying and intimidating and manipulating....

He was a predator and there's no way in hell others didn't have access to those children.

32 In a more civilized time, Sandusky would be executed for his crimes. As it is, I understand prison's a deeply unpleasant place for child molesters.

I normally think rape in prison is a horrific thing. The state has the right to punish people, but people should be able to do their time without fearing that sort of violation. Don't know if it's true, but I read once where more men are raped than women, if you count what happens in prison. However, since we're unwilling to give Sandusky the punishment he deserves, I'm not going to trouble myself too much over what happens to him.

I agree with that - unless the person is in prison for a sexual crime.  In those cases, I could give two shits what happens to them.

My grandpa was a prison guard and he had some horror stories to tell about how the new guys would be 'chosen'.

My feeling is that he'll be put in solitary or some other protected area because of his age and notoriety.  Everyone knows what happens to pedos in prison.  You can kill your own mother and be cool, but you mess with a kid and you're target #1.

It could be a case of turning a blind eye or one of someone so incredibly naive that her brain wouldn't even go there.

Married for decades, she has spent her last night sleeping next to her husband and, after the scene in court today, she has now heard details to which she wasn't privy before. She won't sleep for a long, long time.

I would add that in some cases, these pedos are masters of manipulation and pick their spouses accordingly.  That may be the case here with her.  It's a sick instinct that people like Sandusky have.

Not saying she deserves sympathy, but in the beginning of their marriage, she was probably just another victim for him to groom.  After she first became aware of what he was, though, the responsibility is on her.  It's like a wife who gets beaten - first time is his fault, second time is yours for being stupid enough to stay.

I beg to differ.  I've been in abusive relationships.  If, instead of being smacked in the face, I'd been aware that the asshole was down in the basement abusing some child, there wouldn't have been one second's hesitation on my part.  It would have been the phone calling 911 in one hand and a carving knife in the other.  Children are everyone's responsibility.  It's just a whole different kind of sick.

I wasn't comparing her to a beaten wife in that way.  Obviously it's worse than that because children are naturally more defenseless - but the responsibility was still on her if she even doubted him for a second to fucking well do something about it.  Men who abuse in any way shape or form seem to know instinctively how to target a particular person, or who can eventually be overpowered (emotionally, physically, etc), and that includes partners.  We've all got our psychological weak spots.  There's a reason pedophiles pick certain kids over others.  I read enough case files when I worked for children's services.  I'm betting that if a psych eval is done on her, there won't be much in it that surprises me.

I don't understand why there would be any hesitation on your part when it was you and you alone.  It's something I've never been able to wrap my head around.  I just hope you never find yourself in that kind of relationship again.

116 We now have a guilty verdict on the crime.
Now, get the three in the coverup -- Curley, Schultz and Spanier.
They were the three with the real power to do something. (Remember, at the time of the McQueary incident, Sandusky was retired from coaching. Also, Paterno was the one who got Sandusky's keys pulled from the football building. Spanier was the one who allowed him to remain on campus.)
There's a long, long story in the Paterno-Sandusky relationship... and it wasn't a buddy-buddy thing by any means.

117 There is a possibility that Sandusky's wife is incredibly naive. It happens. The minds of some folks simply can't *go there*. I'm not saying that's the case here, but it could be.

Her saying that the family is going to Disneyland during all this tells me she might be in denial/shock.

With regard to Dottie Sandusky, the bigger question in my mind is what kind of mother was she that her son couldn't confide in her? Or, did he choose to carry the burden alone.

Hearing his tale will tell us a lot about her involvement.

123 2 of my relatives were either molested or almost molested (I walked in on one of them attacking the other when I was a kid). I may have been too (blocked out parts  of my childhood, have many things which point to this as truth). That said, I am glad, but not happy about these verdicts. The whole deal is so incredibly sad that so much went on for years and (once) respected figures did nothing to stop it. It is an immense tragedy made better by the verdict, but still...  I just thought about the two boys they couldn't find. Something terribly sad about that.

124 Jim Sonweed, stop, right now. It doesn't take a sick pervert to think that murder is a worse crime than molesting teenagers.
The guy's a scumbag, and he should pay for his crimes, but... where's the perspective here? I mean seriously.
I just don't get this idea that rape doesn't have a death sentence to begin with but come on... we let people who KILL out on the streets again, but this guy gets an elf's lifetime in prison? In other words: why does murder not get more punishment than it does? See you're reading me as saying "this is no big deal" when I'm saying "this is ridiculous, why don't we punish killers more?"
I suspect most of the rage against this guy is that he violated the sacred game of football more than anything else.
I also suspect that if it had been a woman people would have been a lot more forgiving which makes me wonder... does the homosexual aspect bother people who would instantly say "not that there's anything wrong with that" in another context.
But don't accuse people of being sexual predators or homosexuals because they question something like this. That's not just insulting but you'd get one in the teeth if I were there in real life.

@132 -

Every swinging dick in the PSU football program didn't know, but enough who had the power to do something did.

When the grand jury delivered its report last November, a trickle of stories began to flow in and around Pennsylvania. From one end of this state to the other, we all know people who are somehow connected to Happy Valley. As more details emerged, and the outrage grew, the trickle became a flood. We were discussing among friends, and someone of recent acquaintance said with authority: "They all knew". We started to question how he could say that definitively.

He said a family member of his was a Graduate Assistant at the same time McQueary was. The Monday morning after the infamous shower incident, he showed up at school and informed fellow GAs. They were all disturbed, and when they had their weekly staff meeting, took it up with their coaches. The coaches told them not to worry, it was being "taken care of".

PSU football players began to speak publicly about how they were never comfortable with Sandusky's interaction with his young companions, one specifically stated he felt Sandusky was violating the child's boundaries - and this was behavior that was being witnessed in public. From what I've learned after the GJ report published, Sandusky's little boy prediliction was an open secret around the football program.

The fact that our society is too limp wristed to execute people like this is a disgrace.  All such vermin should be taken out and shot.  We would finally see justice done, there WOULD be deterence, and we could clear plenty of jail space.

HOWEVER - I'll also say this.  Those who get other people falsely convicted - like the psycholgists/psychiatrists who plant false memories in kids' heads, should ALSO be put to death.  There have been innocent people convicted through sheer trickery.  Even the accusation is enough to ruin a person's life, even if they are proven innocent.  To be falsely convicted, even with our current lax penalities, is a life wrecker.

@NDH:

There was a report right after the GJ report came down that Second Mile was being investigated as a vehicle by which boys were procured for high dollar PSU donors. Corbett was questioned about that at his first presser after the report released, he begged off that question.

When his office - as AG - began to investigate Sandusky in 2009 it was the result of one brave mother who would not take no for an answer. A Clinton County mother of a high schooler took her Sandusky complaint to the school admin, who essentially told her to take a hike. She went to County Child Protection, who is in the business of exposing these incidents, not hiding them. Clinton County DA passed the hot potato on to State AG Corbett, citing a "conflict of interest".

So the AG team begins to investigate Second Mile, and discovers that travel and expense records from 2000-2003 have gone missing. The Centre County DA, Ray Gricar, who first received a Sandusky complaint in 1998, went missing in 2005, his computer hard drive later found in pieces. It was so water damaged no information could be retrieved from it.

Did Gricar have damaging info on Second Mile...was he using it as leverage? Too many questions still remain around this scandal and travesty of failure to protect vulnerable children.

I remember one evening as this all was going down, listening to local talk radio. A caller described how his brother - a PSU alum - contributed so much money to Second Mile that he got to have private dinners with Jerry Sandusky. Things that make you go hmmmm....

I assume you're talking about, at least in part, the Amirault family who ran a daycare center in Assachusetts and were railroaded by the recovered memory shitheads even though there was no physical evidence that anything had happened.  Dorothy Rabinowitz made her bones reporting on that travesty and Scottie Centerfold's old opponent, Choadley, was cowardly in dealing with that.  The real shitbag in that was Scott Harshberger who should be a cellmate of Sandusky.

to the comments that wondered about Dottie Sandusky's knowledge:

The GJ report detailed victim testimony about how JS used to pay nocturnal visits to the basement bedroom he had set up for his child guests. This was a repeat pattern. What wife, upon discovering her husband absent from the marital bed, doesn't wonder where he is...time after time after time, especially when the Second Mile boys come to visit?

Draw your own conclusions.

140 It's a dumb thing considering everything, but another example of what kind of odd demeanor his lawyer had:

Second Mile booked time at a camp in Berks County. As the details of Sandusky's perversion emerged, the camp owner reported questionable activity on the part of Second Mile counselors. They required that all shower curtains be removed prior to their stay (with their charges, Second Mile children). And their nighttime entertainment included cross-dressing plays. First it was just the adults who dressed as women, but in subsequent years they encouraged the boys to dress as females.

There is so much more to this Sandusky saga that has yet to be uncovered.

Funny, I called my dad this morning to thank him for being the kind of dad that you are.   He said to me "I'm a big guy, they'd all see me with you kids all the time, no one wanted to mess with me".   I laughed but it was so true.

When any of us served mass, either mom or dad went into the sacristy ostensibly to help us put on our altar server garb.  I remember one time the priest told my mother "ok, they're dressed now, you should leave" and my mother remained.  By the third time he said that she said "oh yeah I'll leave when you guys are out on the altar".   He said "no I think you should leave now" so she said "ok, come on guys I'll walk you down to the front of the church and we'll wait for Father".  He said "no, leave them and just go out and sit down"....and then my mom this petite woman said "no Father, I'm not leaving until you are all on the altar"....so he said "what is your problem" and she said "I'm here to protect you as much as I'm here to protect the kids"....At the end of mass he screamed at my sister about something but none of the priests ever questioned my mom again.  But I thank God she was thinking cause soon after all the problems began to filter down to the congregations...

145 Yeah, it's never a good idea to be "different" on this topic, but: mentally ill people are ill. Ill people need genuine help. Western civilization understood this much better before it became all femmed and rabble rousing-demagogued (i.e. "Leftisted") up. And yeah, Leftists clearly enjoy talking about this topic and incessantly bringing it up (usually with some generic mentally-ill Caucasian male of the day as the target -- although deep down they probably enjoy mentally-ill Caucasian Catholic clergy most of all). Clearly they think they're getting something out of diverting everyone's attention and thought-processes in certain directions, and away from others. Shaping the national conversation, as it were.
