— Guest Blogger Teh Bernank is saying it'll be 2015 or 2016 before we even get to a 6.5% unemployment rate.
My guess? Since we voted for a European-style welfare state, we're going to get European levels of unemployment...probably well into the next decade, and maybe forever depending on how things turn out. There's no way to fund the entitlement state other than a combination of high taxes and low interest rates, which translates into a massive hit to job creation and investment.
The real unemployment rate is well over 10%, as everyone knows, and the situation is worse if you think of the declining workforce participation rate. We'd need to double our GDP growth every year for five or six years just to achieve homeostasis, and we're certainly not going to do that with Bammer in the White House for the next four years.
This, my friends, is why I'm still buying gold and silver.

We REALLY need to change the debate... from the current Jerrymandered Unemployment number... to the % of Americans, of working Age, EMPLOYED.
We are still well over 10% unemployment... once you add back in the workers who USED to have jobs, but gave up out of despair...

Gold is just another way of trying to measure the value of goods and services (much in the way money is). It's considerably more limited than money (seeing as you have to mine it and can't just hit some computer buttons to create it.) but it provides no practical use.
After the crash we could decide that purple rocks are useful, gold buyers are hosed.
I'm hoping that if I plan well I'll have useful things (like canned goods) and semi-useful skills (OK I have zero useful skills, so my plan is just to lift things.)

1. Silver is not only marked "sterling." Sometimes it is marked ".925." English silver is marked by a walking lion stamp. (Consult internet for English marks.) Silver from European countries has varying marks which you can also find on the internet.
2. I buy silver whenever I can get it below the current market rate, sometimes very cheap. Good sources for finding this estate auctions and garage sales, where you can find boxes of costume jewelry (sometimes older people mix up fine and costume jewelry together), boxes of silverware (most will be stainless but you might find a stray sterling piece in there), souvenir spoons (which were sometimes made of sterling until the 70's), and collector plates. (I once bought 8 Franklin mint collector plates each having 8 ounces of sterling silver for $40 each).
3. Silver from Indian reservation jewelry has varying quality. If you are in an area where you run across a lot of this type of jewelry, you should invest in a test kid for silver. Indian jewelry is rarely marked.
Hope this helps people!

If society collapses to the extent that some are expecting, then the market for gold may be robust, or it may be illiquid. It's difficult to predict.
But I'll bet anything that the market for guns and ammunition will be fantastic.

Because precious metals have intrinsic value; they are valuable and desirable because they are tangible and universally valued. Paper money is only valuable because people believe it is and the .gov says it is. When people stop believing folding money has value, it will have no value. Basically, anything tangible will have value, but PM's are universally understood.

Now there is a case to be made for owning gold during the collapse if you think that the collapse will reverse itself. After the collapse, during the recovery, a Picasso and gold will have value again. But during the collapse itself they will both be near worthless. I say near because there will be "investors" out there looking to by Picassos and gold with an eye to the future. But that will be the exception, not the rule.

Intrinsic value.
Lets say you have $1000 in dollar bills.... and your neighbor has $1000 in gold coin.
Now lets say the dollar crashes and the dollar is now worth a penny. Your thousand dollars in cash now purchases $1.00 worth of goods. You can't buy shit with your thousand paper bills. Your neighbor... however, still maintain his purchasing power despite what the dollar does.

On the other hand food has value no matter what anyone says. I could tell you a tomato has no value. But it doesn't matter what I tell you, you can eat a tomato, It has value. In good times or bad, a tomato has value. Same with fresh water. Same with a wood burning stove. Same with a gun. These items have an intrinsic value that is independent of a market value. The price of a tomato could go to $1000 today but its intrinsic value is still 100 calories of food (or whatever the amount is). Gold on the other has 0 intrinsic value. It's worth $1500 today because we say it's worth $1500. It has a market value but no intrinsic value.

If you have surplus money (and not debt) and want to hedge against say Weimar style hyperinflation. Placing your surplus money into a durable form of intrinsic value (gold, silver, copper, beans, winter red wheat, etc etc) gives you an asset whose value will not fluctuate much as your currency rapidly loses value. So if you need to use your "savings" to buy something you would either directly barter, or sell an asset for currency then immediately buy the desired item with it. Gold isn't a magical form of "money" it is simply one potential form of money.
If you are up to your eyeballs in debt (at fixed rates) don't worry. Pretty soon you'll be able to hawk a stick of gum and pay off your house.

St. Louis here. Malls are also packed. Incidentally, people aren't holding as many boxes as in years past. In previous years I've seen people carrying so many bags they could hardly walk. This year its an odd bag or two (with many people carrying nothing.)
A mere crowd is not evidence of economic stimulation. In fact as we walked through the mall (the wife and I) we heard numerous other people discussing how they were trying to stretch their Christmas budget farther this year. (Only the incredibly bad off will buy nothing, most people will just try to make do with less.)

1. I buy things I can wear or use (like trays, silver tea sets, etc.)
2. I buy because of inflation. I can't invest in foodstuffs past a certain amount. If the dollar drops in purchasing power, by silver plate increases in value.
3. I might as well buy silver. Savings accounts aren't paying anything and I am married to a guy who has a horror of the stock market from hearing his father talk about the 1929 market crash. This is the way it is, you can't argue with him, I have tried.

That is some stupid sh*t right there. Gold has intrinsic value in industrial process, electronic circuitry and as a decoration (which while you may scoff at, it has been aggressively sought for decorative purposes since before recorded history)
Saying it has 0 intrinsic value because we can't eat it is just laughable.

While you can argue that SHTF scenarios are impossible or unlikely, you can't argue that, if one SHTF scenario actually happens, Publix will still be around to refuse your gold.
SHTF does not mean a slow down in the economy. It doesn't mean that things cost a little more.
It means that there is no gas, no electricity, and no business as usual.

Predicting the future of any market is pure folly. Just ask anyone that was buying silver 18 months ago and has since seen Obama re-elected and the financial condition of the country continue to decline, meanwhile the value of their silver has fallen by 40% and stocks, bonds and real estate (REITs) have all rallied. In short, consider the possibility that your vision of the future could be wrong before getting in too deep.

Good point. If one is going to be using a $1700 coin to buy something, there's going to have to be $1700 worth of goods in front of him. No one is going to have change if the dollar is worthless.
There's also the risk of "instant inflation" if someone pulls out a gold coin to pay for something.

We're not playing Survivor Island here. Of course you would not want to hold gold in the absence of everything else. I have land, I have water, I have oil, I have guns and ammunition and some means to replenish them. I have stored food and seeds, and antibiotics and painkillers and food additives and fuel. I'm not going to argue over which of those you should get first. You need all that good shit. And some cash. You ought to have some cash.
But quit squabbling over who's going to trade money for your gold. Once the banking system temporarily suspends operations, the gold is the money. It already was before Croesus stamped his picture on it. And it doesn't just come in one-ounce coins. There are halves, quarters and tenths.
It's not an "investment." It's the money.
I think precious metals are a crummy "investment". For survival scenarios, the best thing to have is old US silver coins (worn is fine, should have a recognizable date so they don't have to be assayed), and a scale.

You're right the fed fucked things up in the 30s. Now they're fucking it up twice as hard by printing trillions of dollars. Countries withstand deflation OK which is what happened in the 30s. It's harsh but it clears out excesses which is good long term. Inflation does nothing good for the economy. And inflation is rampant right now. Oh oh oh but CPI is only 1.6% you say. Sure the price of an Ipad falls every year. And so does the price of a 90" TV which is $1000 cheaper today than it was last year. And if you're in the market for an Ipad and a 90" TV, great. BUt if you're in the market for bread, for milk, for baby formula, for dog food, for electricity, you're paying about 10% more on average than you did last year. Gold and silver, I dunno. I expect I couildn't buy squat with it even it all did somehow crash and just mentioning I had any would get me a visit, not from the government but from some MS-13 gang.
It plays a role but it ain't central to anything. It depends on what you're seeing ahead. If I thought some Iron Curtain was about to descend I'd want some so I could have a negotiable to jump the border and a little grub stake. But that takes a significant value of metals to do right.
If I'm holing up here I'd want other things. Like in the event of a crash I'd want health first, skills second, family third, and land. Only other event I could see where gold would be what I want is if I intended to buy during a Weimar-style fire sale. Admittedly, that would be sweet.

Imp, there hasn't been a glut of any weapon or ammunition since 1994. I will be thrilled, in a way, if you turn out to be right. But then, I'm not holding Ruger or S and W stock. The capital of Ireland is about 40 British pounds. Dude, that is so old.
You might have at least run "Belfast" up to see if a crossbow went off.
Speaking of British pounds, Gristle, the pound has collapsed several times, at inopportune moments too. Twice in the late 1600's. They went bankrupt fighting the Dutch. The history of English money is a microcosm for the hard-metal argument.

Nobody is saying that a currency can't collapse in value, obviously it can. But so can gold or silver or the relative value of stripped AR-15 uppers. Yes, the dollar has declined in value but the economy is over 400 times larger than it was in 1910. I'm not sure if you've noticed this or not, but people get paid more dollars than they did a hundred years ago. The population today has a higher standard of living than it did in 1910. I actually suspect we won't see much hyperinflation until the economy begins to pick back up.
Several people have analyzed the numbers and determined that the Fed's devaluing is being undercut by Dodd-Frank (since banks need more capital they're holding the money the fed creates for them.)
This is only going to keep happening for so long, the money will be released and it will be a freaking floodgate.

What I find amusing is that in 1860, it cost about an ounce of gold (equivalent) to buy a good suit...
Today? It costs about an ounce of Gold to buy a good suit....
Gold is NOT an investment, so much as a way to fight the devaluation of the dollar... which with Bernake saying the Fed will continue to monetize the debt to "get unemployment down'... is inevitable.
Posted by: Romeo13 at December 20, 2012 10:36 AM (lZBBB)
The citizens that lived under a currency crisis like Argentina, don't you think the ones that bought physical gold and held on to it came out better than those who held on to their worthless pesos?
I don't understand how anyone can argue with that logic.
I don't think you'll make a fortune off of gold, but you can salvage a lot more than with pieces of paper that are basically IOUs from someone who's completely broke.
Also, usually when countries start flying off the rails, black market economies are what rule the day. Gold is an excellent way to store something of value "off the books".
