— Ace The good news for Mel Gibson is that there's nothing antisemitic on it.
The bad news is that he seems like a very angry, very out-of-control guy.
Previously I ignored this because Joe Eszterhas has never struck me as a credible or ethical person, and the allegations he laid on Mel Gibson seemed motivated by a business dispute. Gibson had hired him to write a script for The Maccabees, and now Eszterhas wants the script back (but I didn't see any offer to pay Gibson back the money he'd laid out for the script).
Everything Eszterhas says may be true. And yet, given his bad intent here (pressure Gibson into giving this script up), I wouldn't want to put money on his claims.
But there definitely is tape of Gibson ranting. In an out-of-control way. Content warning for language.
Here's a bunch of things Eszterhas claims Gibson said, but there's no tape of it. (At least none that I know of.)
I always thought that South Park episode portraying Gibson as a lunatic was a cheap shot and a nasty invention on the part of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. I don't think that anymore.
But as to Eszterhas -- here's why I don't trust him. He has always been a terrible, terrible hack, filling his dumb scripts with the most obvious sort of Exploitation Film pandering imaginable. I suppose he must do some things right, as he sold a lot of (B-movie exploitation) scripts, but not many things right.
Plus, he's sort of been out of work for a while. He hasn't worked much -- at least only a pair of produced screenplays -- since people caught on in 1997 that he wasn't very good at all. Like, after the Showgirls debacle. He wrote a script containing these (Content Warning) atrocious lines?
So, to give Gibson every benefit of the doubt: This guy could be desperate and be very angry that his would-be comeback is now scuttled by the rejection of this script.
Crap Script? I tend to believe Gibson's stated reasons for rejecting the script:
"Both Warner Brothers and I were extraordinarily disappointed with the draft. In 25 years of script development I have never seen a more substandard first draft or a more significant waste of time. The decision not to proceed with you was based on the quality of your script, not on any other factor."
Honestly, I haven no idea why he'd think Joe Eszterhas -- Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Flashdance -- could credibly write a story of 2nd century Jewish revolutionaries.
This guy writes about the script, and notes it's very "bloody," but I don't see him saying it's any good. He seems to not say anything about the quality of it, as if he's protecting his source (Eszterhas, who talks a lot to The Wrap).
Just because it's "bloody" doesn't mean it's any good, of course, and it doesn't mean Gibson would think it's good. Braveheart was bloody-- but also a good script. He doesn't shoot shit just because it has decapitations in it.
This passage from the script suggests it's pure hackery.
“We will be free! The day will come when we’ll be free! We will be free to pray to our God! We will be free to educate our children! We will never have to bend our knee to anyone but our Lord! The day will come when we’ll be strong and mighty, strong enough to defeat anyone - anyone! - who wants to wipe us off the face of the earth. (He puts his clenched fist up into the air and bows his head.)”
Oh dear. This is, uh, on-the-nose, as they say. It's what you want to communicate, true, but your characters shouldn't say the things you've decided the scene is meant to communicate. They shouldn't just read aloud the Moral of the Tale.
These sorts of things are hard to write but dude, you have to do better than this.
Braveheart had some tough things to write. But the writer came up with good ways to say the embarrassing sloganistic stuff.
William: Sons of Scotland, I am William Wallace.Short soldier: William Wallace is 7 feet tall.
William: Yes, I've heard. Kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here he'd consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his ass. I am William Wallace, and I see before me an army of my countrymen here in defiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What would you do without freedom? Will you fight?
Tall soldier: Fight against that? No, we will run, and we will live.
William: Ay, fight and you may die, run and you'll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom.
See, that's not the Very First Thing That Pops Into Your Head, as Eszterhas' "freedom to educate our children" thing is, now is it? "And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that..." is an unexpected way and interesting way to preface the Tough Sledding part about freedom.
Imagine if Wallace just yelled "We shall fight for our freedom! Freedom! Yah, freedom! Whoo-Hoo! We shall have freedom, and we shall lay the groundwork for the moderal social welfare state!"
Yeah, see? Not quite as good.
I guess it's a first draft, so you can chalk that up as "placeholder" dialogue, stuff you write just to get the story beats down, knowing that there's no way in hell that crap will survive to the actual filming script.
Still. Not a good sign. A first draft is not supposed to be just pure crap. You're supposed to have figured out how to handle the bulk of the problems in the script, whether about pacing or structure or dialogue or exposition.
You can't just take the position "We'll figure it all out in the second, third and fourth drafts." Then, um, just skip directly to those drafts. No one profits from a waste of time script in which there are no problems solved and no insights or cool parts.

The over-the-top anti-Semitic stuff that Eszterhack was alleging would have bothered me just because I thought it so unbelievable. Still no proof of that.

As I understand it, It wasn't just Gibson, but the production staff at the production company (Miramax?) who S-Canned the script. In fact, with Gibson's current tattered reputation, I don't think that he, alone, could have S-Canned the script. If the movie house liked it, they'd dump him and find another director.
Which is a long way of saying- Yes, I think that the writer is hack who is upset his script got rejected.

Oh yeah, just because Gibson is crazypants doesn't mean that Joel "It was my hack script for Jade that ultimately gave you Caruso and his Sunglasses Of Justice, no don't thank me" Eszterhas is in the right.
Posted by: alexthechick at April 19, 2012 06:57 AM (VtjlW)
It goes a little beyond that with Eszterhack.
He's been persona non grata in Hollywood for about a decade due to a series of high-cost scripts which bombed horribly, including Showgirls, Jade, and Sliver, as well as his part in making the "Take that!" film "Burn Hollywood Burn: An Alan Smithee Film".
This was his chance to get back in the game. It didn't succeed. Now he's desperately trying to blame anyone he can for it failing other than himself.
Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at April 19, 2012 06:57 AM (e0xKF)
The mistake was hiring Eszterhas at all. I think Gibson was blinded by Eszterhas' supposed religious conversion after his health problems and thought that it would enhance his writing, coming from a spiritual place. But the truth is that Eszterhas has always been a dick who backstabs people and developed that reputation for good reason. Plus, he is a terrible writer. The only reason people know him is because of directors like Paul Verhoeven who could elevate shlocky material into something unique.
Posted by: Synnerman at April 19, 2012 06:57 AM (0Bdlg)
Not only do his screenplays suck, but he has a history of being a douche, and this is not the first time he's pulled a self-promotion stunt like this. He did it with his agent (I think) several years ago, but I'm too lazy to Google and refresh my memory. I'm thinking, however, this is the third time maybe he's blown-up a relationship for publicity and drama, trying to make himself seem like the maverick hero in the cesspool that is Hollywood.
Posted by: Nicholas Kronos at April 19, 2012 06:58 AM (XXy2R)
I feel a great deal of pity for Mel Gibson. I really think the guy had some kind of mental breakdown back around the time of Passion of the Christ, and he's never recovered. I tend to think he was trying to exorcise some inner demons with Passion, but to no avail. He genuinely needs help, of the spiritual and psychological varieties.
It's a shame, but it doesn't excuse his out of control behavior in rants like this one. He needs to fade away from the spotlight for a while and get himself right in the head, heart and soul. Then, if his passion is still in filmmaking, try to make a comeback. But only then.
PS -- Eszterhas has had ages to write this script, and bags of money paid towards it. I don't have much sympathy for him. I should have more, but I just can't summon the urge to care.

That whole sequence of Imaginationland is one of my favorite bits in South Park history.
M. Night Shamalamadingdong tries to make non-sensical plot twists instead of solve the problem given to him.
Michael Bay just talks about special effects and doesn't know the difference between that and a story.
Mel Gibson acts fucking crazy but is able to solve the problem, hence the "He's a crazy fucker, but he sure knows story structure!" compliment.

Not really. Gibson has been caught on tape saying pretty bad anti-semetic things before, like when that cop pulled him over. Nothing unbelievable about stuff like that from Gibson at all. Not that I really care one way or that other. He is not running for Office and is only a movie type and I assume they are are all full of shit one way or the other.
I'm talking about what Eszterhack alleges, which was Gibson calling Jews "oven-dodgers" and shit of that nature.

A HOWLING WITH RAGE drunk guy? Yeah, I guess. I guess we've all been there.
But... this seems to happen a lot.
I thought it was pretty common knowledge that Gibson is/was an alcoholic. Add to that the whole utterly bizarre crap with his dad and the Pope and his father's massive issues with Jews and, well, yeah. The ending is pretty inevitable.
Not to say he's not talented, he is. I have to admit I thought it was hilarious to read the reviews of Apocalypto that were all but but but it's so violent! Yes. Because what the Mayans are known for is the peace and calm that permeated the Mayan society. It's shocking to read that a movie about the Mayans could possibly contain any violence.

The flail scene in Passion of the Christ is more than just a filmmaker trying to give an accurate portrayal of what Christ would have gone through. It is a filmmaker's brutal, public self-flagellation, done in an attempt to atone for past sins. I really believe that.
In other words, Mel has issues. Lots of issues.

The weird thing is that there are Hollywood people, like Robert Downey Jr. and Jodie Foster, who have stood with Mel Gibson through it all. He should've been working through them, since they wield great power in Tinsel Town, instead of a bottom-feeder like Eszterhas.
This is the second big project scuttled (the first was a Viking film in Old Norse with DiCaprio). Hopefully "Get the Gringo," which is getting a VOD release through DirecTV, helps bring him back, because despite all the lunacy, I still enjoy watching his films.

Part of the problem is that Gibson believes in trying to redeem fallen Hollywood people, which is part of why Downey Jr. loves his ass. Gibson helped out Downey Jr. at a point when he couldn't get insured to work on a film because everyone was scared he'd relapse yet again. That's a big part of why he refuses to knock Gibson while everyone else does these days.

I don't know enough about the inner-most thoughts inside Mel Gibson's head, to know if he is truly 'anti-semite'.....or simply fed up with the liberal Hollywood jews who control everything, and support liberal anti-American politicians.
I mean, how can all these high-powered Hollywood jewish folk keep supporting Barky....since he has been so anti-Israel? ....It makes no sense.

Ok, I see your point. I've listened to their commentary on the episode, I'm sure, but don't remember exactly what they said, but I thought maybe they hinted at that very thing. That they were basing their portrayal on things they either knew or heard at the time, but were not common knowledge.
I will say this though, as long as they have been doing what they do, there are very few circumstances where they went too far, in the sense that they ripped on somebody who didn't earn it somehow. Honestly though, as much as I have no interest in the Jersey stuff that is all over the tv, I think it's possible that might be one exception. I mean, Snookie, I know nothing about her other than that she's on tv and she's from Jersey, but I have a hard time believing she did anything to deserve being portrayed as she was. Maybe she has, but whatever it is, it would have to be pretty darned bad.

150 As much as Mel gets ripped for being anti-Semitic, in his films at least you could make a stronger case for him being viciously anti-British. Braveheart might be entertaining, but as history it's horribly inaccurate. And don't even get me started on that Patriot flick. Yeesh!

>>I don't think the studio ever had any intention of making the movie. I think they threw some development money at it as a sop to Gibson, maintaining a relationship, and at a point when Gibson needed a relationship. It also helped gibson the film would be a positive portrayal of Jews.
That's a shame. He's directed several entertaining (loosely) history based films.
I really do hope they make this film and I hope Gibson is the one to make it.

Way off topic notice: I just caught part of a movie called Riders to the stars. The premise is they must go into space and retrieve a meteor for research. On of the actors asked how do we get back. Answer, "The rocket is equipped with wings which will extend during decent". Another actor, "you mean we land like a glider?"
Another asks, "why don't you build an electronic brain to fly the rocket?" Actor scientist, "To construct an electronic brain equal to the functions of a human brain it would have to be at least a mile long and would weigh thousands of tons."
I thought it interesting the writer had conceived of a shuttle in the fifties and the exponial reduction in computer size vs. power is referenced in 1954.

He probably did it to get his ashes hauled because I don't think anybody who's ever been his temporary toady would go so far as to call him even close to good looking.

But the script might not have been the reason WB passed, they might have gotten cold feet about allowing Mel to make a movie about Jews. I mean, it's not like shitty scripts stop most productions.
This isn't Masada, where the Jews all died. They're the underdog, fighting against the Greek Seleucids who insisted that the Hebrews go thru a hellenization and reject the Covenant. They went so far as to place an idol of Zeus on the altar of the Temple in Jerusalem. Possessing a copy of the Torah was capital offense, as was the practice of circumcision.
The cleansing of the Temple brought us the celebration known as Hanukkah.
If they shit-canned it for a reason, it's to not provide anyone with an example of a religious group rebelling against an imperialist central government trying to dictate their values. Teh Won would not approve!

Why did Gibson's project (mentioned above) on the Viking era fall through? If he gave it the Apocalypto treatment, that would have been epic - even with Leonardo di Caprio in it. Gibson strikes me as the one director who could really put on film the reason why Dark Age monks scribbled "Lord deliver us from the fury of the Northmen" in the margins of their hand-copied manuscripts.
And that's one area Hollywood has yet to tackle with the sort of authentic realism that it deserves - apart from The Thirteenth Warior (which was just a pale shadow of Crichton's impeccably-researched re-telling of the Beowulf saga) and maybeeeee the motion-capture Beowulf itself, there's never been any really layered look at the complexities and the violence of Dark Age Germanic and Viking culture.
I think Gibson could have pulled it off, just like I think he would be one of the most interesting choices to direct some of Robert E. Howard's work - imagine his treatment of say, Solomon Kane, or Kull.
Posted by: A. Pendragon at April 19, 2012 07:55 AM (pYA5L)
Here's some speculation. Eszrerhas has been out of work for a long time, during which time he is said to have had a religious conversion. For all the anger Gibson can be a real deal Christian. Gibson insisted on hiring Robert Downey Jr.when no one else would touch Downey because of the insurance issues after his rehab. Did Gibson try to help Joe only to be repaid in typical Eszterhas fashion?

1995: BRAVEHEART
(Budget: $53 million. Box Office: $210 million.)
2004: THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
(Budget: $30 million. Box Office: $612 million.)
2006: APOCALYPTO
(Budget: $40 million. Box Office: $120 million.)
Three epic films (two in a foreign language) and huge returns theatrically for all 3 (without even counting the television rights or home video releases). No matter how insane he might be, there was not a single complaint about his professionalism on set. It doesn't make sense why a studio wouldn't take a chance with him. They're still making movies with actors and actresses far more toxic. Roman Polanski and Woody still make whatever films they want and are even awarded for them. $30 to $40 million is a small budget these days and Gibson made the films look epic. Other than a blacklist against him, I don't see why they wouldn't give him another shot.
His next step should be to look for European backing for his films. After all, anti-Semetism is a daily way of life for them. His past comments wouldn't even make them blink.

Discovery is being instituted into the Smithsonian right now, on NASA TV for your morons who have it and NASA.gov for those who don't. John Glenn is there and just effin' bodyslammed Obama after the NASA admins got up and talked all about how bright the space program future is. Glenn mentioned that there was "an unfortunate decision" to "prematurely ground" the fleet.
There have been 3 big rounds of applause throughout the ceremony: When Glenn was announced, when first female commander Eileen Collins was announced, and when Glenn said that.
Glenn sadly became a Beltway slug since his great days as an American astronaut hero, but it's great to see that at the age of 90 he's giving Dear Leader the figurative finger with his mighty astronaut glove.

That wasn't the "hard" part of the engineering problem. It is obvious to the casual observer that you need to slow your decent when returning to earth. You have essentially two choices: thrust* or use an airfoil (Wings/parachute).
The engineer says if I use an airfoil I don't have to drag all that extra fuel into space => obvious choice.* Then he says but how do I manage contact with the upper atmosphere so I don't burn up? There is the real engineering problem that took the most effort and creativity to resolve.
*(Despite this choice being pretty obvious with the most rudimentary understanding of physics, most arteests prior to the space program didn't have enough insight to consider using an airfoil and ended up using thrust to slow descent)

But I do know this.... There had to be a damn good reason for people to risk life and limb.....basically, risk everything they held dear.....and rise up to fight their British overlords.
I'm not an anti-British, anti-colonialist sort either. ....If the British had not gone out and colonized the planet the way they did, then the world would be a much different place today. ....And poorer for it, imo. So, I am proud of my British heritage.
I just think that the British may have had some people in their ranks, back in those time periods.....people who went overboard and inflamed their subjects to the point of taking up arms against them.

Indeed. I still have yet to see a very good film about WW1(since the original All Quiet on the Western Front) or the Boer War. I would like to see something on both.
I remember seeing a movie(on PBS i think) called My Boy Jack. It was about Rudyard Kipling's son and he was played by the Harry Potter actor. It was a decent film. Also, The Lost Batallion, another made for TV movie with Ricky Schroeder was entertaniing. Nothing special, but I enjoyed it.
I think both of those eras are overdue for a good movie.

>>>But at least he is still working. He unfortunately doesn't get the director's chair anymore, but he does a lot of screenwriting (especially for TV). He was a producer/writer on HBO's "Rome," plus is developing a new series for them called "Pharaoh" (as well as a miniseries on the Aztecs and a feature film about Genghis Khan).
I loved Rome. That was a great series.

Sad, too, because it's something that should be discussed.

Check out Beneath Hill 60; austrialian flick and kind of hard to find in the US. Don't watch it if you're claustrophobic, though.

I just watched that last night. It didn't hold up, or maybe I'm just used to more sophisticated anti-war propaganda, like giant papier-mache puppet heads. The cinematography in the battle scenes was pretty good, though.

Oddly, VALHALLA RISING is a foreign film (Danish), but made in English. SEVERED WAYS is an American film, but in a foreign language. Both are available on DVD only in the US (I have the Blu-ray of VALHALLA RISING from the UK).
VALHALLA RISING falls into the APOCALYPTO camp (prisoner breaks free from his captors and kicks their asses). SEVERED WAYS is a bit more arthouse, but still interesting.

225.....I loved Rome. That was a great series.
Yeah, I loved Rome too. ....Even though they put history through a blender, it was entertaining....and their attention to the sets and details of daily life was really good. Very expensive to do that. ....Which is why they cut it from a 5 year run, down to a 2 year run.

I enjoyed the 'Young Indiana Jones' stuff set in WW1 as well... twisted history about but fun.... but that was a few years ago...
Problem is with historical Pictures today, we have moved to worldwide audiences and as EVERYONE has some Axe to grind... it will tick off somebody...
Heck, there are reports a Red Chinese company is bying into 'Iron Man 3'... and you don't think THAT will modify any potential story line?

Are you talking about the original black and white one or the the 70s remake?
I thought the original holds up. Also, it is anti-war, but really everyone should have been anti-WW1. It destroyed Europe and accomplished nothing.
It's an enjoyable anti-war story because it was a pre-Vietnam anti-war story.
Everything written about war after the 1960s is tainted by the Vietnam anti-war experience. Even Breaker Morant, a film I liked, had too much of a Vietnam-esque feeling to it.

>>232 - Gallipoli
That was a decent film, but that was about a very small part of the war and only 20 minutes of the film contained actual war.
It was a perfect film in the sense that it was the pre-war and brief war experience of two men, but I'm talking about something more grand.
Something beyond just telling a story with WW1 in the background. I did like Gallipoli, A Very Long Engagement(good French film about a woman looking for her lost love after the war), the Blue Max and a few others.
However the last few have been junk. I thought Joyeaux Noel was pretty bad. It was supposedly about the Christmas Truce in the first year of the war.
Posted by: Ben at April 19, 2012 08:21 AM (wuv1c)
Don't watch South Park, so... no.
And I can feel pretty darn bad. Doesn't mean he isn't responsible for his own problems, just that I feel bad for him. I feel bad when my son hurts himself jumping off of his bed (like he's been told a gajillion times not to), too.
Not that that's a direct parallel, but I think you get the point.

I have yet to see a very good film about WW1
I think a lot of folks are confused about WWI so they don't want to tackle it. In WWII there were actual PEOPLE and THINGS that have stayed in the modern lexicon: Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito; Churchill, Roosevelt, Truman; MacArthur, de Gaulle, Montgomery; kamikaze, Luftwaffe, RAF; Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, Battle of the Bulge; Auschwitz, Dachau, Bergen Belsen.
In WWI it was such a mishmosh of conflicting alliances that your typical modern moviegoer wouldn't have a fucking clue what's going on. Is there a single name or event that stands out with the same clarity as "Hitler" or "Normandy?" You might get someone who understands the significance of Flanders Fields and the reasons for the red poppies you can get on Memorial Day, or someone who knows the story of the Christmas armistice when the armies came out of their trenches to celebrate together for one night. But beyond those examples -- and even those are stretching it -- I'm sad to say the closest you'll get to a modern understanding of WWI is, "Didn't that start because some German guy was shot?"

I also believe that Mel has a very short fuse.
He strikes me as the kind of person who would be fun to party with, but not the kind of person that you want to piss off.
He's got those crazy eyes. Not the stone cold serial killer type- but the aggravated assault type.

I'm Jewish and supposed to hate Gibson but I don't. He had a drunken verbal outburst at a cop. Nobody got hurt.
He keeps out of politics, doesn't spend his money supporting dangerous liberal pols and doesn't lecture us "Flyover Rubes". Better than most in Hollywood, including the Jewish ones.

Little late in the game for him to regain his sanity since he did more than his part to get the JEF elected. Also the cheap cocksucker was flooding the airwaves in opposition to Issue 2 to curb the public unions last November with lines like "Here in Ohio, we like to look out for people who have our back". Big fucking words from somebody who stiffed a lot of small businesses for services provided in some of his quixotic Presidential runs that didn't have a snowball's chance on July 4 of being taken seriously. Pay your debts, deadbeat.

You don't go to a movie and expect to see accurate history. Hell, you can't go to the History Channel and see accurate history.
I am not to sure what to make of the Mel Gibson rants. With what ace says above it appears more and more like we should take a lot of them with a grain of salt. But, in the end it doesn't make much difference to me. He has made some good movies and he has made some not so good movies. I would say the good ones outnumber the bad ones.
I don't watch a movie because I agree with someone's political convictions. I will not go to see one if the person making the movie or starring in it is a traitor like Jane Fonda. That is where I draw the line.

"Good actor (if not great) and a genuinely pretty good director, too. Interesting guy. "
I think you're selling the guy a little short here on both counts. Gibson's a really charismatic actor with an impressive range (the scene in "Lethal Weapon" with him drunkenly crying over his dead wife and then trying to work up the courage to kill himself was great stuff). And he's as talented a director-particularly with action scenes-as there is.
Is he crazy? Maybe; he certainly has some serious anger issues that need addressing. He also needs to stop ranting on the phone at people; everyone's going to record his volcanic tirades at this point.

Not sure what they do now, but back in the day Marine Drill Instructor antics would have made Mel Gibson seem normal...Why? They had eleven weeks to turn steaming piles of amphibious shit into Marines. You're not gong to get there playing nice and hoping for the best. Gibson is obviously a burn-out to some degree, ok to a large degree, but he has starred in and produced some of the best stuff to ever come out of Hollywood. He's got the resume and the bank account...Most of his critcs aren't qualified to shine his shoes...

Meanwhile look at the way half of Hollywood goes onff on Republicans who are, after all, half the country. Hell, I won't watch a Julia Roberts film on the teevee after the way she came out with Republican is between repugnant and reptile. So prejudice against one group is verboten while prejudice against another group is just fine. Okay, got it. Screw them with Cheney's dick of death.
