White Plains Journal-News Hoist On Its Own Petard
— andy

It's amazing how much information is out there on the Internet for someone who wants to dig it up.

On the one hand, if you're a criminal in New York, a local paper has done a great job of casing houses for you and directing you to those where the owner doesn't have a gun permit. Granted, they may still have a gun in the house, but your odds went up when you eliminated these high probability households.

On the other hand, not everyone appreciates details that may technically be "public" but are nonetheless pretty difficult to get at, like ... say ... the government's records of gun permit holders, being shouted from the rooftops. And in the 21st century, where it seems nothing is truly private, a few mouse clicks coupled with righteous anger can be quite productive.

Reader “Jeff” sends along a link to the latest article in the White Plains tabloid, Journal-News, reporting on the hornets nest occasioned by their publication of an interactive map showing the identity and address of all registered gun owners in Westchester County and surrounding areas.

Editor Cyndee Royle defends her decision and in fact sounds quite smug about it. LetÂ’s keep those cards and letters (and telephone calls, of course) coming.

EDITOR:

Miss RoyleÂ’s married name is Lambert. She lives in White Plains and here is her Facebook page complete with pictures of her and her kids. Hello Sanctimony.
...

There's more at the link. Lots and lots more, and I don't want to steal their thunder by posting it here. Go over and pay those guys a visit and check out the database they've compiled of the paper's staff. Maybe some of you Morons could even drop them a line and let them know how much you appreciate their work.

8 Over at Jawa, they wondered why LoHud (or whatever) did not seem to think that publishing an interactive map of sex offenders is REAL news.  I would think that I would rather my children (if I had any) live next door to a weapon permit holder than a convicted child molester.

But, that's just me.

9 Thank you for pointing out the distinction between publicly available and publicly accessible.   If you need a FOIA request to get it, it's not publicly accessible as commonly understood.  It may be publicly available, ie the public has a right to see the information, but it is not publicly accessible, ie the public can just stroll in and look at it or pull up the info on a website.

I really would love to know if the newspaper did any type of cross referencing to see if that information is out of date.   I am absolutely positive it's not.

It is long past time for us to hurt these so called "journalists" personally.  They hurt *US* personally, (Sarah Palin anyone?) and they need a good punch in the nose to make them understand why they don't want to play this game with us.

The French have a saying, (yeah, I know, but this one is good.) "À BON CHAT, BON RAT."    You act like a Cat to me, and i'll act like a Rat to you. Retaliation in kind.   This is war people, we didn't start it, but we need to make them get a good taste of it.

Needless to say, when they defended it, they claimed their first amendment rights were more important than these women's safety.

Yeah, but it looks like that didn't actually pass.   That text is for a bill and from the comments there it looks like it got referred to committee and either didn't come out or didn't get taken up for a vote.   I do know that many states have laws on the books explicitly protecting this information.

Now, I very very vaguely recall that there are privacy protection laws for names and address of current and retired law enforcement personnel for the obvious reasons and it sounds very likely that those were broken.   I'm far too lazy to go spelunking to look that up.

All that being said, I would be shocked to my core if that rag did any type of investigation to cross reference between LEOs, those with restraining orders or any other type of check to make sure they aren't placing certain individuals in even greater danger than they are placing everyone on that list.

Also, gah, I meant I'm sure the information is out of date.   I blame the weather, my lack of caffeine and David Gregory.

40 I would love to see a map of welfare, SSDI, WIC, Section 8, and food stamp recipients.  But no liberal rag would publish such a thing.  You see, it's dishonorable to legally own a gun, but it is honorable to live off the state.

Now, I'm not saying that all unemployment, welfare, SSDI, WIC, etc recipients are bad people or undeserving - but there are far more fraudulent claims out there than any of us can even imagine.  I know at least 7 people on SSDI, for instance, who have no perceivable disability and who could easily work.  I hear about people defrauding unemployment constantly - people don't seem to think it is wrong they are so open about doing it.  I have seen people I know receive Section 8 housing assistance who drive a nicer car then me and have better clothes and televisions.

If we had an interactive map of these people, it would be easier to report fraud and it would also turn most people against these programs as the fraud would become much more visible.  Which is why such a map would never be made.

As others have pointed out, this makes everyone less safe.

On the one hand, thieves looking for money/electronics/jewelry/etc. are now going to be able to cut down on the chances of being confronted by an angry and armed homeowner.

On the other hand, thieves looking for guns to sell to other bad guys now have a handy listing of homes they can visit.

46 Personally, I don't really care if anyone knows I have a concealed carry permit. . .my friends all know I have one (and most of them have one too).   I keep the actual GUN concealed!

But then again, I live in a rural part of a red state, where concealed carry permit or not, there is probably at least one firearm in 80% of the homes around here.

That said, I'm not sure why this information really needs to be publically accessible.

And THAT said, why do I even need a special permit to carry concealed? I don't need a special permit to exercise my right to free speech or free assembly.  Why do I need one for my right to keep and bear arms?

I have concealed weapons permit.

So I have the gun concealed. . . Lets play "hide and seek".

Where is my gun?

Is it in my gun safe?  Under my pillow?  In my car?  On my person?

Or maybe, there is more than one gun in more than one place. . .hard to know, though I kind of think your odd burglar probably isn't going to want to spend too much time looking for it.

Some of these are parents who tell their kids to act up in specific ways so they collect "crazy checks", which should frankly be labeled a form of child abuse.

There was an article, in the NYTimes I think, about families in rural Appalacia who deliberately prevent their kids from learning to read in order to collect benefits.  The kids are labeled with a "learning disability" and the parents collect social security for it, but if the kids learn to read the benefits will go away the parents fear.

There's an IP blacklist.  You put the IP addresses of serial offenders (especially the boring ones) on it.  That IP tries to post, and it gets rejected.

Of course, then they can use proxies, reset modems, etc., etc.  But you can keep up with it if you try.

Also because of NCLB.  One of the ways school districts have found around some of the passing percentage requirements is to have kids they know are going to fail classified as Special Education/Special Needs.  The law exempts their scores from the school's numbers.  So a lot of kids who are merely difficult and unruly are classified with some "disability" and sent to the Special Ed teacher so that it won't matter when they fail their end-of-year achievement test.

There's also a status piece to it.  Helicopter parents of a single child are competing against one another for who is the most "dedicated" parent.  Having a child with autism or Asperger's allows them to revel in how hard they have it while simultaneously excusing any bad behavior by their child.

Posted by: Manolo at December 26, 2012 03:26 PM (PttbO)

What is the point of publicizing law abiding gun owners' names and addresses?

With people on disability, it tells the electorate where our tax dollars are being spent and allows us to watch out for fraud.

It appears to anyone with any sense of honesty that publicizing a list of welfare recipients has much more relevance than publishing gun ownership.  One is a private legal activity without government involvement (aside from the requirement to obtain a permit).  The other is taking money from the gov't - which we should always be entitled to know about.  As a taxpayer and voter, I should know where my money is being spent, on who, and why.  I don't see why I need to know who owns a gun.

but your snide and ignorant comment rightly shames me into thinking I was wrong.  Or maybe it just shows how stupid you are?

210 Fnord,  do you realize that by publishing those names the paper has given home invasion types, rapists, child molester/kidnappers a way to know which homes are safe for them to prey on?

All the creeps have to do is check a potential target against this map,  and they will know whether or not they can safely attack the inhabitants of an address.

So soccer moms,  once they are aware of this,  are not going to be particularly pleased.

As far as I am concerned,  every crime against someone NOT on this map is directly attributable to this idiot newspaper telling criminals which homes are unprotected.

Because, of course, it makes perfect sense to publicize a legal gun owners name and address simply because they have the audacity to use their constitutional right to bear arms - but to turn the tables and publicize the name and address of the person who publicized that info is somehow wrong.

Also "gun nut".  I guess that would be anyone who believes in the constitution?  What is a "gun nut"?  If you hate guns, you hate America, as one of the foundational principles of America is the right to bear arms. Is "gun nut" a term of art?  Does it refer to anyone who believes in the 2nd amendment, or do you need to do more than believe in the 2nd amendment to be considered a "gun nut" but America haters like you?

And that the liberals really dont need to do any presswork themselves, since they just have to annoy you folks a little bit and the mediastory comes of itself. (Anyone remember ho Sandra Fluke and the War on Women got started by Rush Limbaugh?)

You are correct that liberals can sit back and allow the media (98% of which is liberal) simply advocate liberal viewpoints rather than report facts - Sandra Fluke is a perfect example.  They pretended that her lies before congress about not being able to afford or find affordable birth control were reasonable or made any sense in the argument over whether I should be forced to pay for your birth control.  Had the media truthfully reported the story, they would point out that a) birth control is inexpensive and readily available and b) that requiring a religious institution to pay for birth control against its beliefs violates the constitution.  Something the media ignored.

What you dont understand is that you are dealing with a lot of frightened mothers here.

What exactly is this supposed to mean?  Because there are frightened mothers, it is ok for the paper to publicize law abiding citizens names and addresses simply because they use their constitutional right to bear arms?  That b/c there are frightened mothers we should no longer use reason and common sense?  What is your point?

Screaming at the top of your lungs at them aint going to work.

Then why is this liberals one and only debating technique?

But hell, you folks have moved well beyond caring about anything but the fire now, havent you?

What?

I bet Jesus is proud.

On gun thieves. I live in a small, very safe cul de sac area with about 35 homes. Since the neighborhood was developed about 25 years ago (I'm an original homeowner there), there has been exactly one (1) break in/theft. And guess what was taken?

Yup, the homeowner's couple of guns. And it was a break in by someone who had been doing finishing work on the house just after the homeowner moved in, so the scumbag knew the guns were there.

225 Well done. This model protocol needs to be adopted nationally in many other categoriesÂ’. If you journalists, politcos and supporters write or say it, you'll now need to explain your position. This blog has gone viral and I would expect this model to be adopted from San Diego to Bangor, from Palm Beach to Seattle and all in between becoming more assertive and polished moving forward with a dedicated server website but the information is there. This strategy will work vertically all the way to the executive suite. To Hollywood, NYT, LAT, et al., if one has visibility and continues to represent fiction as fact like youÂ’ve been doing since 2007, your already in the game whether you want to be or not.
