Just So None of You Morons Forget...
— Ace

Third season starts tonight on FX at 10. If you haven't seen it, it's like Downton Abbey, but in Kentucky. And if it there were a lot of guns, and if the families were big in the meth and marijuana trade.

And if the main character shot a lot of people. Kind of by baiting them into a draw, which he knew he could win, and then had to explain to his boss, "Shucks, Chief, I done baited someone to their death yet again."

And the series ignores that, because let's face it, you want to see guys getting plugged in quick-draw contests.

It's like that.

No Maggie Smith.

And don't forget -- gee, is that Nick Searcy (the head US Marshall) in that video endorsing Herman Cain, early in Cain's candidacy? Well I'll be, it sure is.

4 Sadly, this is the best news I have had all day. I love this show, but will miss Mama.

I asked morons before, but have any of you either had a lake dam repaired? It is an old lake my Dad built fifty years ago. It blew. Cost of trees pulled and new dam (bulldozer and whatnot) bidding at $20k. For that much I may learn to drive a bulldozer myself, as the mud/clay is there, natural creek there. I can understand labor, gas, equipment costs, plus a pipe for spillway. But FUBAR, cannot afford this. This is stupid, I know, but many memories of my Daddy washed away with this lake and this broke my heart. Yes, I am a redneck princess.

FX has consistently put out some of the best shows on TV. Justified is awesome. The League and Always Sunny are F'n hilarious.

The Shield was the best series from beginning to end I've ever seen. The last few episodes were as close to perfect as possible.

Are we talking a lake-lake or a pond. Once you get above a certain size there are a LOT of regulations now that come into play (both federal and State) and that may be what is adding to your costs.

What used to be fairly simple 50 years ago is a load of crap now.

22 Only one show can make me not watch a Kentucky basketball game. Best thing about Justified to me - I am an old Kentucky girl - is that it really gets Kentucky. Oh, the caricature crooks and lawmen aren't really realistic, but the way it portrays the state is, and the accents are. And Timothy Olyphant is the hottest thing on the planet.

26 #24, No, they run this show like a mini-series, every season has a new storyline and set of villains to face off against Raylan, though there are a couple of continuing characters and there is one bad guy that was not killed last year but is in prison this year and probably will figure in the story. But there have been some huge twists in the final episodes so you may want to get caught up as soon as you can.

Posted by: rockmom at January 17, 2012 03:01 PM (A0UFZ)

27 BTW, looks like a pretty cool "American Experience" tonight about George Armstrong Custer. I think that runs from 9-10 p.m.

Posted by: rockmom at January 17, 2012 03:03 PM (A0UFZ)

28 Thanks re: bids. I am hoping this was the high bid as it almost made me faint. It is an 8-10 acre lake my Dad made in a valley on his land. Natural spring fed a pond, and fifty years ago he probably got a friend with a dozer to go wild one weekend and make the dam. Dam is about 50 yards long, and, unfortunately, trees were allowed to grow and weaken it. Beautiful place. Natural creek was/is the spillway (and beavers love it, another problem my brother is dealing with. I want beavers all dead as they helped weaken the dam). Lake is down to a pond now with advice to let it drain until spring and/or I win the Floriduh lottery. It has depressed me, the thought that it is gone forever. And, yes, Vic, the regulations are probably impacting the repair. We want to do it right, but cannot afford this amount.

39 Justified turned me on to Elmore Leonard.  I lucked into a yard sale and scored about 10 old paperbacks of his.  Elmore has been reliably cranking out pretty good yarns for a long time.  Interesting thing is that almost all the characters are unique and interesting and vary considerably from novel to novel.

I hadn't really seriously paid attention to Leonard until Justified either. Now I've been gradually picking his stuff up in e-book form. His early western stories and novels are especially damn good, I think.

Local rag had an interview with him regarding the Raylan character and the TV show. Said he loves the show, Olyphant nails Raylan, but the hat is not exactly his Raylan's.

The reason for the new Raylan book? To give the show's writers more material to work with.

Got to love a guy like that.

And you just know Dewey will have to be back.

50 The last Elmore Leonard Book I read was Road Dogs and I just didn't care for it. He basically made the ultra cool Jack Foley seem like a worthless putz. Be Cool sucked too, he needs to avoid sequels.

51 Okay. You see.

Third season. This is where it gets tricky.

This is FX.

And, as someone who was raving about the shield when only myself and 3 other people were watching it, I can tell you that FX puts on one helluva a show, until they don't.

They feel the need to keep making it edgier and more gritty until, one day, someone has their face planted against the hot coils of a stove and a male cop is forced by drug lords to give bjs.

Enjoy it while it lasts, because they will totally jump the shark, and unless they've learned anything from the past, it won't be long before they do.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at January 17, 2012 04:36 PM (piMMO)

52 Its really hard to keep good content up for a long time. England has a more clever system where they do shows only as long as they have a story, then they stop. If they come up with another story, they do another set of shows, but they don't try to drag a series on forever and scramble for what new to put on the screen.

I have a theory that a lot of these shows have one or maybe 2 good seasons of ideas in them, then they just try to figure out something to put out after that and the show suffers. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, whatever that superhero show was, on and on. Its really rare you get a show that has legs like Rockford Files or NCIS and keeps being great entertainment year after year. It seems like the high concept shows are the worst at this, they start off with a bang then sort of stagger around confused and die off after a few years.
