Karl Rove: Obama's Crude Lottery-Solicitations Point To His Problems Raising Cash
— Ace

Good article. Rumors of a billion-dollar warchest may have been greatly overstated.

[Mmany of Mr. Obama's 2008 donors are reluctant to give again. The Obama campaign itself reported that fewer than 7% of 2008 donors renewed their support in the first quarter of his re-election campaign. That's about one-quarter to one-third of a typical renewal rate: In the first quarter of the Bush re-election campaign, for example, about 20% of the donors renewed their support.

There are other troubling signs. Team Obama's email appeals don't ask for $10, $15, $25 or $50 donations as they did in 2008, but generally for $3. Nor are the appeals mostly about issues; many are lotteries. Give three bucks and your name will be put in a drawing for a private dinner with the president and first lady.

This is clever marketing, but it suggests the campaign has found that only a low price point with a big benefit can overcome donor resistance among people who contributed via mail or the Internet in 2008. It also points to higher-than-expected solicitation costs and lower-than-expected fund-raising returns.

The final financial challenge facing Mr. Obama's campaign is how fast it is burning through the cash it is raising. Compare the 2012 Obama re-election campaign with the 2004 Bush re-election campaign. Mr. Obama's campaign spent 25% of what it raised in the second quarter of 2011, while Mr. Bush's campaign spent only 9% in the second quarter of 2003. In the third quarter it was 46% for Obama versus 26% for Bush; for the fourth quarter it was 57% versus 40%. In January 2012 the Obama campaign spent 158% of what it raised, while the Bush campaign spent 60% in January 2004.

At least he's consistent. He spends his money like he spends ours.

10 There are whales out there willing to bankroll Obama's campaign, much like they did in 2008. Soros and Co. will happily pitch in, as will the trial lawyers and Hollywood -- not to mention the huge amount of foreign cash that probably came from only a few donors.

That being said, he is obviously not going to raise what he raised during the last cycle, but his built in publicity machine (the MBM...duh) will cover the shortfall.

Do I have to quote Winston Wolf?

14 I hate to beat this dead horse, but Romney also spends a very high amount of contributions, winning states by outspending the competition by multiples... in Iowa he spent more than 50 times what Santorum did... and lost.

With that in mind, it's a relief that Obama has money problem.  This is going to be an expensive contest.  Romney's path to winning the general is not a positive reform or a record as governor... it's attacks on Obama.  That's what he needs to do.  And Obama's path is hysterical attacks on Romney.  It's basically all about the money.

Perhaps you aren't aware due to life threatening levels of stupidity. If you are conservative and don't pay your taxes, it's not like being a Democrat in good standing where it just gets ignored until it becomes public, at which point you just need to pay the back taxes; the IRS will come for you if you are conservative, as a matter of fact they will prioritize it.

Santorum says in a statement posted to his website, “The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws.”

If elected, he promises to “vigorously” enforce laws that “prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier.”

Hardcore (obscene) pornography = showing nipple.

RE: Illegal Pornography

Mr Santorum,

While I understand your principled stance against pornography, especially those forms of which are already illegal (such as child pornography), I must ask this question:

Given $4+/gal gasoline, a real unemployment rate hovering around 10%, real inflation in the double digits, a floundering war in Afghanistan, potential war in Syria and Iran, and numerous other issues which threaten our very survival, don't you believe we have bigger fish to fry than illegal porn rings?

123 The New York Times is being accused of having a double standard when it comes to questioning religion, after it ran an ad calling on Catholics to leave their church, but nixed an ad making the same plea to Muslims. The newspaper published an ad from Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation on March 9 which asked Catholics, “why send your children to parochial schools to be indoctrinated into the next generation of obedient donors and voters?” The ad went on to call loyalty to the faith misplaced “after two decades of sex scandals involving preying priests, church complicity, collusion and cover-up going all the way to the top.” But in a story first reported by The Daily Caller, when Pamela Geller, a blogger and executive director of Stop Islamization of America, offered the same $39,000 for the Old Gray Lady to run an ad making a similar appeal to Muslims, the newspaper passed. "This shows the hypocrisy of The New York Times, the "gold standard" in journalism, and its willingness to kowtow to violent Islamic supremacist intimidation," Geller told FoxNews.com. Geller said her anti-Shariah ad was designed to mimic the anti-Catholic one. In calling on Muslims to quit their religion, the ad asked “Why put up with an institution that dehumanizes women and non-Muslims … [do] you keep identifying with the ideology that threatens liberty for women and menaces freedom by slaughtering, oppressing and subjugating non-Muslims… Join those of us who put humanity above the vengeful, hateful and violent teachings of Islam’s ‘prophet.’” Bird cage lining

But one official didn't dispute the leading suspect: stinky diapers. "Could have been," the official said. He can only go to the NY/LA/SF well of rich donors so many times before it runs dry.  And the well is dry.

Even so, his spend rate is insane.  And having Air Force One is a campaign bus makes it worse.  His campaign must reimburse the Air Force when he flies to a campaign event.  That cost a hell of a lot more than a Cessna.

In fact, historians have long contended that the notion Europeans widely believed the Earth was flat, let alone 15th century Spanish scholars, is a myth developed centuries later. From the late Harvard paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould’s 1995 book “Dinosaur In a Haystack”:

There never was a period of “flat earth darkness” among scholars (regardless of how many uneducated people may have conceptualized our planet both then and now). Greek knowledge of sphericity never faded, and all major medieval scholars accepted the earthÂ’s roundness as an established fact of cosmology. Ferdinand and Isabella did refer ColumbusÂ’s plans to a royal commission headed by Hernando de Talavera, IsabellaÂ’s confessor and, following defeat of the Moors, Archbishop of Granada. This commission, composed of both clerical and lay advisers, did meet, at Salamanca among other places. They did pose some sharp intellectual objections to Columbus, but all assumed the earthÂ’s roundness. As a major critique, they argued that Columbus could not reach the Indies in his own allotted time, because the earthÂ’s circumference was too great. Moreover, his critics were entirely right. Columbus had “cooked” his figures to favor a much smaller earth, and an attainable Indies. Needless to say, he did not and could not reach Asia, and Native Americans are still called Indians as a legacy of his error.

As far as muddled historic references go, Obama’s hardly the first presidential candidate to screw things up on the trail. But for an address specifically going after his opponents for their ignorance, it’s probably not great to have a “citation needed” banner on top of his speech.

But I think there is another reason too, that once you can get someone to contribute, they become more invested in the campaign and in its outcome. The financial investment may be minimal, but O needs his legions of assorted admirers, foot soldiers, fainters, Acorn fraudster replacements, sycophants, etc.  He needs to gin up enthusiasm, for its own sake and for its propaganda value.
