Bottom line: If Romney gets in with an increasingly tea-fueled congress, and we get 2-3 solid SCOTUS picks, I think we'll turn this around.  And the dems will be in the wilderness for a while until there's enough wealth regenerated to steal and they get a new crop of liars out of the farm team.

I suspect the Democrats will because they will have to.  The left won't have to adjust all their messages to be competitive, but they will certainly have to adjust some.  The right has done the same in the past 4 years.  While the right has always been the party for of smaller government, the tea party has renewed the GOP's focus.  It is a lesson learned from the big-spending right that started sometime in the late 90's and continued through the Bush days.   Further, the right is probably not nearly as hawkish as it was in the years following 9/11. 

But the right was never as far out from mainstream thinking (at least on fiscal/national security issues) as the left.  So for the right is more of a recalibration.  For the left, it will be much harder because they are so far away from the mainstream on those issues.  The left can argue that they are closer to mainstream thinking on social issues, but I don't think that is true.  That is partly because the left takes such absurd positions, such as partial birth abortion.

The problem with the Tea Party is that it can mean anything - from the original economic reform groups, to activists and politicians trying to cash in, and to the imaginings of the opponents.

The statement "The Tea Party is..." is a distortion right there.

142 The obvious strength of the GOP is the 3-legged stool that supports it.  There are three distinct bases of support for the GOP, with some obvious overlap as a good Venn diagram would show.  Each sphere grows and tugs at the GOP and gains a disproportionate share of influence from time to time.  The social cons have arguably had the most influence for the past 25 years, with the national security sphere exercising signifiant influence after 9/11, but currently diminshing.  The fiscal sphere is increasing heavily at this time and thus excerpting more influence on the party now then it has in the past.  But the point is the GOP has its own internal separation of powers.  The Democrats had the same, but the far's left years of influcence have basically shrunk those spheres to just the small part where everyone overlaps.  This has the benefit of making everyone share the same beliefs, but the problem is it is very small group of support.  The election of Obama caused them to think that the country suddenly shares their beliefs, when in reality, enough supporters from each of those three separate spheres that make up the GOP base decided to test the waters coupled with an election year in which certain groups who normally don't vote, vote.  But this is not the reality of the electorate.  The reality is that the majority of the country tends to fit within one of the spheres of the GOP.  They may overlap with one or both of the other spheres, but one dominates their thinking.  Both parties used to provide a home for all groups.  But the left has found a way to exclude citizens concerned with social issues, fiscal issues, and security issues.  They are all homoginous, they just don't have that many.  The GOP has natural competition within its own party.  And so long as each sphere gets to have a disproportionate influence from time to time, then each group will feel like the GOP is its natural home.  If you only cared about one of those three groups, your best bet is still with the GOP, even if you are the last among 3.  With the Dems you have no chance.

Right now they are using it to decode not only the last four years, but the last 50.

That review is not sitting well with many voters that have finally figured out Democrats have been lying to us and secretly dorking us up the squeakhole while we were distracted and trying to make a living.

I believe that is why people such as Artur Davis is "leaving" the party. He see's the scorched earth attack that's coming and wants to have a survival vessel for the Democratic Party from which it can be rebuilt.

Do some people really think that this is how salaries work?  Do they really think that if my boss came to me and asked me to cover some additional work for a while, that I'd be refusing to do so unless given a raise that was exactly in line with the percentage increase in work?

I'm in a field where people are highly educated and well-paid.  My job has an official 35-hour work week, but I haven't seen only 35 hours in a while. I've been doing the job of at least 1.3 people for the past three years, as our department is understaffed, and I've gotten 2-3% raises (as did everyone else) for the past three years, not 30%.  It was only after doing the work of more than one person consistently for a few years that I was able to put together a larger pay raise request  and get it granted, and even then I had to wait six months until it was economically feasible for my company to make this happen.

What fantasy land are these people living in that they think other salaried professionals are able to demand pay raises exactly in line with the hours of work?  A person who gets paid more per hour is an HOURLY worker, not a salaried one.

Or do kids magically become more rational the moment they enter college?  I was teaching Freshmen, but the administration wrote the tests, not me... and I had well over 50% of my students passing those tests.

Did the job suck?  Yes... but not as much as roofing, or heavy industrial (pulling sheets of glass off an assembly line), or unskilled labor construction, or a dozen other jobs I've had.

Sorry, not the hardest job ever, not the worst job ever, not the most complicated job ever... and when you're doing as crappy a job as they're doing in Chicago; not really worth paying what they're demanding.

And the students in the teaching degree program?  They're uniformly the ones who did the worst on the ACT/SAT tests... they're the bottom of the barrel of college bound students... there have been a lot of studies.
