Thanksgiving meals, served up to Americans fighting in Vietnam.

It wasn't all "special" casseroles. The first part of the video is a full meal deal for Special Forces fighting in the field. Bird, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. The commissary teams work pretty hard to make sure the troops get the goods on Thanksgiving, no matter where they are.

There are thousands of our armed forces away from home this Thanksgiving. I hope they all get lots of turkey, mashed potatoes, beans and salads. And some pie. Mostly pie. I think pie is a pretty big deal when you're so far away. God bless em, and God bless the families who miss em.

This one is a little more raw, but I think worth watching.

Flying hot meals to grunts was considered good duty. It was a welcome break from Combat Assault's, and the recipients were appreciative. We also transported ice cream in marmite containers, and it arrived more like a milk shake, but when it's hot and muggy, even cold shakes were a treat. Fuck Fonda!

17 I remember being on Frigates (Smaller than Destroyers) in the IO over the holidays.
Setting UNREP detail for fuel, and flight quarters for VERTREP to receive pallets of food, frozen turkeys, and on more than one occasion, a Christmas tree hanging from the bottom of a helo.

It is flat out amazing trying to thing of the logistics train that is needed to get food from the States to a Grunt in the jungle, a Sailor in the middle of the ocean, or an Air Force bubba on the 17th hole .
(I might have made that last one up)
I hope and pray that our government never gets to the point of NOT making those huge efforts to remind our serving military how much we care for them.

Every year, the VIA family goes up-country, and stalks a wild grown tree on the tree farm. And every year, the family run tree farm gets another tree paid for by the VIA family to send to our troops.

We called for air support but there were no resources available in our sector. It was then that we realized that the turkeys had surrounded our position overnight.

30 I tip my hat to all combat soldiers. They have balls this big. During Vietnam my skinny ass was on aircraft carriers. Floating cities. I worked 2 years on a night-time flight deck. Kinda dicey, but nobody shot at me. Today, I thank GOD we still produce good people to defend us. Not as many as in times past, but enough. I suppose the turkey will be among the first to be cut from the defense budget, heh? Along with retirement benefits.

That was nice of the folks at the Cubi Point commissary for doing that.

46 My only overseas Thanksgiving was Sinai, Egypt 1990. The mess hall staff was run by Kiwi and Brit contractors with Egyptian staff (who were all known to be Egyptian Secret Police). They actually did a good job on the holiday food, even though it wasn't their tradition.

I have spent more than a few Thanksgivings and other holidays alone while my hero husband was deployed and some when he was stateside so his junior soldiers could have the day with their families. It is a hard place to be, but that sense of pride knowing the man I got to marry contributed to something bigger than him carried me through. I have him home now, but I will continue to pray for those serving, and even more for those who won't ever have another holiday with the one they love.

58 Back in 1969, I celebrated Thanksgiving in West Berlin. I had to write my mom for directions on how to cook it in our little German oven. The German guys at the commissary had dumped the frozen turkeys in a bin from a height while anzious military wives waited to grab one. Consequently, the turkey' skin was broken.

The gal I cooked dinner with had never cooked anything. We had to sew the turkey up with thread from the Air Force sewing kits, so it looked like Frankenturkey! It came out ok though, cementing my reputation as a super cook amongst the wives. (We even made those frilly things for the legs out of notebook paper.)

96 Operation Solo Thanksgiving Meal is fully staged, ready to go. It looks like the most time-consuming part of cooking/preparation will be the 12-15 minutes it takes for the rolls to brown. Stuffing and potatoes are basically "boil water, wait 5 minutes", the gravy is even easier than that and the cranberry sauce comes out of the can ready to go. Am I forgetting anything?

It really isn't my holiday. --- I think one reason we've switched to doing the turkey on Wednesday is to take the pressure off of Thanksgiving Day proper to achieve whatever traditional family thing most folks are doing. We've always lived far from home and only gone "home" a couple of times over three decades. So we do our own thing. And on the actual holiday it's kind of fun to be out of sync with everyone else. We'll even occasionally run some sort of errand or take a drive or something, just to enjoy the emptiness of the streets. If today doesn't feel like your holiday, then take the bull by the horns and make your own version of it. Might help you not feel depressed.

State institutions have "hard money" state-funded positions (full-time faculty, most staff), but then there are the part-time positions. Those are soft-money funded (not from state appropriations) and therefore much less secure. His institution will also be letting go of hundreds of people. The students will suffer, especially at community colleges which rely more heavily on adjunct positions. BTW, at our local ones those adjuncts are by and large working professionals, like accountants or other technical professionals, and so they are not the flaky libs that dominate the humanities departments. They're regular working people who do adjunct teaching out of interest in teh field or for some extra income.
