Killer Killed His Parents First
— Ace

Parents first.

He then went to Connecticut to kill a woman he was involved with somehow -- whether wife or ex-girlfriend -- and also to kill all the children near her.

I think we were just talking a few weeks ago about a certain form of intensely narcissistic psychopathy that spurs people to kill everyone close to them rather than just taking the gentleman's way out of suicide. (I don't mean to give a nod towards suicide but if the difference is between killing yourself and murdering your whole family for your failures and inadequacies, let's put in a good word for suicide.)

I've said this before but I think the media can help reduce these things from occurring. These nutters see themselves heroically, sort of as bigger-than-life agents of mayhem and evil. Now that may sound like a bad thing to you, but it doesn't sound bad to them: They've embraced it.

And what Evil is usually described as, in popular mythology, which these guys are not, is potent and capable. Yes, Evil is horrible, but these guys are embracing it for the Power of it. Because they are failures and hopelessly inadequate in their own lives, they contrive a fantasy in which they become Dark Heroes -- larger than life and big as death -- by murdering a lot of people.

Obviously we have a debased value system here. But it does seem to me that that one thing they value and cherish is their self-conception of the Big Scary Man, who you should Take Serious Notice Of because he's Scary and Capable of Anything.

And a lot of media coverage tends to play this angle up. And I don't mean to knock the press too badly on this -- evil sells, and these people are evil.

However, I think it would do at least something to dissuade the next potential mass murderer to know, for example, that coverage on him will not focus on the Evil Menace part of him (which is a self-conception he finds flattering), but the Sad, Lonely Pathetic Guy Who Has a Small Dick and Couldn't Keep a Woman or a Job and Just Couldn't Hack It part of him. The part that's actually much more relevant to his crime -- masterful men do not have to kill people to let the world know "I exist" -- and the party that he's actually afraid of other people knowing about.

If I were the media, I'd allow myself to get very personal in publishing accounts of these guys. Personal, and nasty.

And not only is this a bit of a public service, but, as I said, this is much more relevant to the actual reasons for his crime than this puffed-up faux-heroic claimed motivations. The maniac in Colorado did not shoot up a theater because of Batman, and to even say that credits his self-conception as true and puffs up his fantasy connection to Batman.

No, the maniac in Colorado shot up the theater because he was a pathetic weakling unloved by women and incapable of satisfying them and so retreated into a twisted babydick world of power fantasy.

Same thing with this guy.

I'm going to go against my political team, here-- although conservatives often say "Label evil as what it is, Evil, and leave therapy and psychology out of it," I'm going to say No, not in these instances. Because Evil (notice the capital letter E) is powerful in these sad losers' imaginations, and they want to be called the Big Scary Man, the Shadow That Menaces At Midnight.

For an impotent, weak, ineffectual man, that is an attractive fantasy.

What they do not want and could not abide is an accurate assessment of their psychology, their physical stature and shortcomings, their ability to succeed in work or school, their loser history with women, and so on.

To the average people, the idea of being called Evil is bracing and restraining. Not to these fellers. All of these bizarre murders are motivated, at root, by the psychology of utter failure. These are flop-sweat murders, sexual panic murders, too weak to carry on murders. Reporting them as such would not only provide at least as small disincentive to the Power Fantasy losers who commit them, but would actually be much, much closer to the truth than "Heavy Metal poisoned his mind."

No, being the runt who no one loved all his life poisoned his mind. Heavy Metal was just his escape from that. Or Batman, or video games, or Jared Laugher's Conspiracy By Manipulation of Grammar, etc. Promoting the Batman/Heavy Metal angle takes the lunatic's diagnosis of himself as credible.

It's not.

There's a Pink Floyd song that mentions a sentence of being exposed before your peers. Let's strip the Mystery away from these guys. The Mystery angle is both complimentary (in the only way it matters-- as they assess a compliment) and false. The thoughts of a loser gone lunatic are not particularly mysterious, and not very interesting; they're all basically the same, as FBI profilers can tell you.

So less of that.

These guys are Romanticizing murder and conceiving it as some sort of Blaze of Glory heroic Act III. Everything we do and say should refuse that romanticization. Where they seek to seem big, we should make them small (which, again, is actually on the mark as far as accurately). Where they wish to seem Potent -- capable of inflicting their will on the world -- we should strip them down to what they actually are, impotent in virtually all ways. A little finger pulling a gun they didn't build is the one sad skill they've had any success with.

Let them know that murder will not be an escape from that pitiful truth, but rather a life sentence of being confronted with it.

"Theater:" A commenter "beach" cites an expert diagnosing this sort of crime.

A key word is "theater" -- the psychopath chooses this sort of senseless, large-scale murder for the theatrical element. Obviously there is no "motive" as it is usually understood -- murdering a bunch of kids does not advance his cause (the way murdering a man for his car would get you, temporarily, a car).

He wants to be discussed; he's giving a performance; he wants to move the audience.

The audience shouldn't indulge him by considering him in the terms her prefers.

I'm from Nigeria, which is in a much worse state economically and in other ways than the US (it goes without saying), but these types of murders are foreign to us. They just don't happen. Don't get me wrong, we have our own large share of criminality, and the US is safer on the whole. But over there people murder for some perceived or real benefit to themselves. Or revenge. But just not random rampages or murder-suicides. I think in this post, Ace touched upon why things like this may happen over here, but any other ideas?

26 The Devil makes himself known to the weak-willed, the better to tempt them to their own destruction. Ace is right, the true strong-willed people don't need to become a monster to impress other people. they are busy impressing people already by being good at what they do, good with their families,  and good people to know when there is trouble. The temptation to become mighty by treading on the backs and faces of others has a special appeal for the losers of the world. Which is probably why gangsta rap sells, and dictators lead more governments than legally elected presidents.

49 I'm also perturbed by the current need to explain evil away as mental illness, and then treat mental illness on the same level as diabetes. Hey, give them some pills, tell them to come into the clinic every so often for tests, tell them that they are their own best guardians. It's OK, the voices in their heads are only illusions, don't worry if those people are no longer taking their meds, or talking to their case workers, or to other people.... OK fine, if the mentally ill aren't goblins who do evil for kicks, why don't they get put away for enforced treatment so they don't become goblins who do evil because they can't make objective moral decisions anymore?

Excellent assessment Ace, I agree.

All the (righteous) fear and panic and profound sorrow being felt that is shown and explored a lot by the media I think also compels people who would do this, because it affirms they are making an impact.

However, covering that stuff is valid, it's what people feel, so I don't really have an answer for the second part. Deranged people are still going to commit these Evil acts even if the media doesn't cover how scared people are over it.

72 I do think it's important to identify evil as evil, but that's today mainly in response to the rush I'm seeing to reduce this to a mental health issue, as though this loser would have been kept in check if only he'd been given the right dose of trazodone.

My suspicion is that reducing these things to an issue of mental health will probably be as fruitless as taking away all the guns.

Mind you, I have no idea what should be done, but I do support the idea of aggressively exposing these people as dickless losers.

Posted by: Kensington at December 14, 2012 11:13 AM (H84UO)

73 @49. I think normal folks may sometimes say these evildoers must be mentally ill because we can't imagine ourselves committing such evil under any circumstances. I believe the vast majority of people that commit these crimes do so because they are evil (not in an original sin sense). They are so steeped in evil that they may behave kind of crazy sometimes, but the bottom line is they have embraced murderous evil completely and are irredeemable narcissists. Just my opinion.

75 >>> I'm from Nigeria, which is in a much worse state economically and in other ways than the US (it goes without saying), but these types of murders are foreign to us. I think there are psychological pressures in a culture that has a lot of big successes and where you see them on TV and stuff all the time. I don't think this sort of thing is as common in places where there is less upward mobility and less promise of that. In a village where if you're the pharmacist's son you're expected to be the pharmacist (and usually are), there's less of a gap between what you are and what you think you could be/should be. Not to knock Nigeria. I'm not saying it's backwards. I'm guessing, though, it doesn't have the avenues of upward mobility that the US does. The trouble with an avenue of upward mobility is that if you don't make it, you feel shame. In Japan, lots of guys kill themselves over that. Here, we have suicides, of course, and also this sort of thing. Serial killers tend to be middle class (more than strict per-capita guessing would predict, I think). I am not a psychologist but if I had to guess, I'd guess they tend to be middle class because it's only the middle class that feels class nervousness and the bleak horror of complete failure. Those who are in the lower class, and happy to be there, don't feel much stress to succeed; those in the upper class can't really fail completely, unless they really, really try at it (daddy can bail them out for a long time). So the stress and the snapping points tend to be piled up in the middle class, where you CAN succeed, but where you can also fail, and it's the failure, of course, that causes psychological derangements. This is no indictment of capitalism or upward mobility or a culture of success, of course. Just to note that any set of rules is going to produce problems in some. Where ever there's energy --as in the striving, success-conscious middle class, or in immigrant populations (they were the ones, after all, who got up off their asses and took a risk) -- there's naturally also going to be *bad* energy.

84 Although this guy wasn't Mr. Sanity, his family et al could've been at the center of his problems.

All families aren't nice, aren't supportive, arent' sane themselves and as a result, they produce more insanity.

This is not to say that that's always the case, however to make a blanket statement that his explosion was derived solely from his own faults and derangement could be in error.

Of course many people endure what others cannot but this shouldn't be cause to make statements that focus all of his mental imbalances as of his own making.

Families can and do make some of their members nuts.

So now we're in this place where we have to figure out the best way of how to get little kids out of a school being terrorized.  Do you put them in a line?  That keeps things orderly and make sure everyone's accounted for, but doesn't that just make everybody a target?  What about the kids at the end of the line?  Do you shut down everything around the school?  Where to keep the parents whose children aren't accounted for?  Could you have even contemplated anything like this when we were kids?

You have a good point when you mention the "Pink Floyd song that mentions a sentence of being exposed before your peers." What society thinks, not family, not god, now trumps all, for a growing number of people. The lady who killed herself from the Kate Middleton prank obviously thought having to live with public embarrassment and ridicule was a fate worse than death. Young people behaving like cast members of jersey shore or kardashians because society rewards their behavior with money and fame. Our society is currently sick, and giving evil people willing to murder innocents the public exposure their egoes crave only adds fuel to the fire. Shaming this man, not painting him as a scary villain, hopefully might make other people feeling powerless not go this route for the validation they crave.

Posted by: chique d'afrique (the artist formerly known as african chick) at December 14, 2012 03:05 PM (6zgse)

I think part of it is a kind of    "First World"    psychosis.    We live in a world of iPhones and Twitter and Facebook and email and texting.   We get movies from Netflix instead of going to theater, and we watch sporting events on our big screen TVs in our own homes.   When we turn on the    TV    we're faced with beautiful people with impossibly perfect skin and hair   who live in beautiful homes despite having   low-wage employment,   and they all have someone in their lives they can count on: a    wacky best friend,   a cool neighbor,   a loving parent,   a supportive child.

It's very easy to feel disconnected and unwanted in that world.   When you're already a weak, impotent little pansy man    who could never succeed in social situations anyway, it goes from being merely depressing to   malignant.   "The whole world hates me, but not as much as I hate the world.     I'll show 'em.  I'll show 'em all.   They shouldn't have underestimated me."

But they didn't underestimate him.   The world at large had Impotent-little-pansy-man's number from day one and     reasonably ostracized him.   And with a gubmint daddy to make sure that his needs    are taken care of -- food   stamps, welfare, SSDI --    the need    to become self-reliant and independent is negated, creating a fertile    landscape for bitterness and envy to take root and thrive.   "Why do I have to live in my mom's basement when THAT GUY can rent   his own apartment?   it's not fair.  The world doesn't understand me.   They all hate me.   But I hate them MORE."

I think, in terms of places like your home of Nigeria, where there is still a great deal of poverty and struggle just to survive from day to day, this kind of    First World ennui     isn't an option.

170 what I don't get is that you think morality is the answer for a cat like this.

The only answer for a cat like this is to wield more power than he does, and let him know you do. Period. There are no other answers. No magical societal potion. No academic studies. Just more power.

If someone isn't afraid to die and wants to take people with them, there's not a whole lot we can do. The religion of peace taught me this.

We should have a national program for the training of teachers in the defense of their pupils and colleagues.

That's what any extra money for education should go toward.

Remember, it is only by chance that the police ever stop these crimes. They are, by definition, reactive, not proactive. An armed teacher can end it with a few rounds. A policeman will arrive too late to do anything.

192 Ed Gein, the serial killer who was the model for most of the movie psychopaths you know (Hannibal, Leatherface, Norman Bates) was murdering in the gentler world of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I think you have to realize that these people are not simply further down the same line on the graph as we are. There is not a continuity, here, wherein your morality shades down into my atheistic ethics which shades down into Satanic Psychopathy. In line-graph terms, they're on a different line entirely. It's discontinuous. They can't be thought of us "Mostly like us but with a few less positive inputs and a few more bad ones." They're on a different line. At some point they jumped tracks from the normal plotline of sanity/morality on to the deviant one. They're just morally and psychologically deranged, more deranged than the guys who get off on shit or watching women crush live mice under their boots. I just don't think you can apply the same toolbox to them that you'd apply to normal people. They're not normal. "Morality" is so distant from them it's like trying to communicate with a turtle.

197 I am not trying to say my country is superior in any way. I was trying to get at what people thought was behind this particular type of crime. It was an honest question.

Understood. My point is that senseless slaughter of innocents is not unique to the US and it's not unique to our modern culture. It has happened throughout history. People are sometimes bent. They can snap and carry out something like this or they can kill methodically over a long period of time. We always want to craft some kind of narrative to neatly explain why it happens or blame it on something or someone we don't like. Or we invent tidy little solutions like publicly shaming the killer after he's dead as a deterrent to future maniacs. It won't work, but it sometimes makes people feel good that they're doing something.

248 Excellent analysis Ace. The way I see it this is the result of Evil preying on those who are, in short, losers. Those losers who are spiritually weak enough to succomb to the call of Evil will do unspeakable things. This problem is spiritual as much as it is emotional/psychological/physical and simple laws will not protect us. For me, the only effective defense from these losers is to keep my M1911 in one hand and my Rosary in the other. Which is why TFG wants to take them both away.

When asked why they asked, they replied ... (paraphrasing) "Well back in Africa, if I were homeless, my friends would help me build something ..." People who build their own homes in America - i.e. bush style - will have them ripped down by state / city authorities unless they are way out of sight in the woods somewhere. So America - or many other places in "the First World" have an incredible build in bias of learned helplessness, because everything must be down in a 1st world fashion, whether you can handle it or not ...

Libs have for years insisted that shame is a bad thing, so now we have millions of people who think nothing of lying, cheating, stealing, killing, etc., because . . . why not? There is no downside. In the unlikely event you get caught and prosecuted, you'll get a slap on the wrist and will be sent for some type of counseling. Plus, if you happen to be a minority, you'll be celebrated as a "victim" of an unjust and racist system. The incentives are all on the side of doing wrong.

259 I think the narcissism angle is difficult to understate.

We have a couple generations of kids who've been raised to believe that they're special, complete with middle class parents who believe that their little precious can do no wrong and is destined for Very Big Things.

There are no longer troublemakers, only Special Needs victims of ADHD, some other pseudo-medical condition, bullying, discrimination, intolerance, or some other outside influence.  Not their fault.

There is no losing team- everybody gets a trophy because they're all winners.

Then, they discover the hard way that they're not that special and there are losers, because they are one.  But it can't be their fault.  Society, parents- someone else is to blame.  Not them.  Can't be because they're perfect and special.

Their failures aren't their own.  The world conspired against them.  They're the victim of unfairness.  So who do they take revenge upon?

Immorality is now held up as 'normal'.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that this shooter was involved in the OWS protests.

'Envy' used to be considered a sin.

Now it is dished out on a daily basis from our POTUS.

Voting is declared an act of 'revenge'...against those horrible people who are happier than you are, or have more than you do.

This shooter killed his family...and then went on to kill the children who had been taught by his mother (?)...as a further act of 'revenge' for his own unhappiness.

He obviously felt entitled to exact this revenge for his lack of happiness.

Btw...Great work lately, Ace.

What has he been doing every Friday night?

Post the most embarrassing fact about this loser's life.

Pictures that show his pale, weak, bird chest. His weak man-boy scruff of a non-beard. His already flabby, skinny-fat gut.

Post the porn he looks at. Post the most embarrassing porn he's looked at.

Post his job history.

Post his grades. Especially his failures.

Post his SAT scores -- especially if they are low. Or lower than he wishes they were.

Post pictures of his broken down, ratty-ass car.

Post emails where he whines like a bitch to a girl who dumped him.

Post anything embarrassing about his medical history. Acne, asthma, herpes.

Total character assassination for any murderers. Make it known that we'll take the most unflattering aspects of their life and put that on a wall. That is how they'll be remembered.

I read Explaining Hitler by Ron Rosenbaum who presented an interesting idea along these lines.  He contemplates the possibility that Hitler wanted to be The Greatest Conqueror in History! but after the Battle of Stalingrad it was pretty clear that that wasn't going to work out so he went with Most Evil Mother Fucker In History! instead.  Rosenbaum references Hitler's prior dream of being an artist and suggests that what Hitler was doing was becoming an artist of evil.  So the Holocaust was performance art.  I've never been able to look at Hitler quite the same since I read that.

Maybe it's time to bring back the concept of "shame."

This is something I've been preaching for years.

Those little children who run up and down the aisle at the movie theater?   Or who kick your seat on the airplane?   Or the person on the subway who talks very loudly into their cellphone about the anal sex they had the night before?    They were never taught shame.

Shame is    only negative when misplaced and when taken to extremes   (see treatment of women in the middle east).    When used as it's MEANT to be used, shame is a key component of behavior    building.   It's    not supposed to destroy a person's sense of self; it's supposed to make a person understand that they are not the only person int eh world.  It's supposed to remind people that they    should respect those around them.   It's supposed to build harmonious social bonds.

And let me say, there's a difference between "shame" and "humiliation."   Shame is meant to be a check on behavior,    and is something internalized by the individual.      Humiliation is      punative     and is     used by sick fucks to get a cheap thrill at the expense of someone else's humanity.

370 There was a time decades ago when having a monster like this guy, or any of the other mass murderers we've seen, in one's family would be a source of shame. The family would disown him, revile him, refuse to acknowledge him. Outsiders would view the family with suspicion thereafter. Lately the family is an object of pity and attention. Lately it seems cruel to ostracize or look askance at the family. Who knows someone better than one's own clan? Just observing the differences between times when shame mattered and when it didn't.

419 Virtually EVERY one of these mass murderers has been a malignant narcissist.

So what does the media do?  Shower them with virtually unlimited attention, and indeed SYMPATHY.

Crazy doesn't mean stupid.  Someone craving attention the way a junkie craves a fix, shoots a bunch of people and is REWARDED with media attention that would make the Beatles in their heyday jealous.  What do they THINK the other malignantly narcissistic nihilists are going to do?

The media is literally TRAINING mass murderers as surely as Pavlov trained dogs.

It's the equivalent of using bloody fish guts as shark repellent.

Of course the media simply doesn't CARE.  It's an opportunity to attack the right to keep and bear arms.  But suggest that they be forbidden from fawning over the next mass murderer and they suddenly remember the Bill of Rights.

It's about MONEY, far MORE money than what the media hypocritically accuses the firearms industry of making.

Posted by: ace at December 14, 2012 04:00 PM (LCRYB)

Agreed.   That is the POINT of sin.   Sin is meant to be seductive;   that's how it preys on the soul.   And that doesn't mean sexually seductive.   It means alluring and engaging to a dark part of our subconscious that wants pleasure without consequence.

One of the problems as I see it is that we've divorced the concept of "sin" from the concept of "morality."   Sin is no longer a   wicked indulgence (let alone a damning offence);   it's become a    lifestyle.

473 Why do you gun nuts not accept basic evidence?America. How about Canada? Where there are virtually no guns, and strict gun laws? That is one reason they are talking about it, there, today. 2006 Dawson College, Montreal, Quebec 1989 Montreal Massacre (It was reported by witnesses that the gunman divided the students in the classroom by gender and sent the male students into the corridor before opening fire on the female students. In that room six women were shot dead and a seventh woman was killed in another room. The gunman then left the classrooms in search of more victims. He killed three more people in the cafeteria and four people in the corridor of the third floor before turning the .22 calibre rifle on himself. These types of crimes -- mass murders are not unique to the US, and occur in countries with very highly controlled gun laws and regulations.

I don't know what to say to any of this. You have to be clearer, in the whole comment, for me to respond. I do not know what you mean half the time. For example: >>> To sin is to lose in a Christian perspective so it would make no sense for a loser to seek power in sinning in order to be evil. I don't think this particular guy was keen on going to Church, so I'm not sure what any of this has to do with the guy we're actually talking about. 486 Okay, I've gone back and read what you wrote Ace. I want to suggest you look at it from a different angle, now that more facts are available. He hated his Dad, killed him. Hated his Mom, killed her. But hated the Mom so much that he went to the school where she taught, into her classroom, and killed her entire class of innocent five and six year olds. Why them? I'd guess that he wanted society to hate the woman who brought him to the school, who made it possible for him to get past security, with a white hot anger. He'd want the press to investigate her life, interview her neighbors, turn her into the focus of the investigation. Which I surmise is going to happen. He gets the reward he wants, because I would suspect there's something there he wants to be discovered. What's the answer to that?

The real answer is there is no f*cking answer. There is no question. Maniacs will be disturbing and unknowable just like the grass will be green and grow.

There is no salve for the pain and destruction they cause. When the mania is widespread and based in an ideology, we can stomp the subscribers and stop the spread. When it's individual and unique, we just have to eat the horror and find some f*cked up way to digest it.

517 >>>One of the problems as I see it is that we've divorced the concept of "sin" from the concept of "morality." Sin is no longer a wicked indulgence (let alone a damning offence); it's become a lifestyle. when you say "it's become a lifestyle," surely you're not postulating a time when this was not true. Part of my objection here -- why I keep objecting to these claims -- is that I see these as the mirror-opposite of John's posts. It's trying to put this into a *continuous spectrum* of politics. Look, you and I both know that no matter how much of a twat Keith Olbermann is, or how much of a twat Rosie O'Donnell is, nothing they did or said had anything to do with this crime. I just don't see this connection between murderous lunacy (which is as old as evil itself) and modern political/cultural problems which most people would date from about the time of the birth control pill. And as a nonbeliever, I'm not so much offended as amused by the suggestion -- not explicitly said, but lurking around -- that because I don't have Christ in my life I'm an elevated risk to commit a mass murder. It's not true. I can come up with a whole list of god-fearing Christians who went nutters and killed people (sometimes, they claimed, because Christ demanded it). Now you will probably rejoin "But that means they weren't really Christians' but at that point we arrive at a tautology: Christians do not murder, ergo any murder committed was not committed by a Christian.

I have a diferent perspective on all this....

Not all Men (people) are good by Nature... most have to be trained by Western Society and their upbringing to be good....

A large part of that used to be religion, and the idea that there WAS Ultimate Justice when you die... thus this person would have gone straight to hell, due to killing innocent children and commiting suicide.

That part of societal training is no longer active, nor effective, with the secular society we have become... and when you add in moral relativism where EVERYTHING is equal (its just cultural).... where NOTHING is Right or Wrong, let alone Good or Evil.... there is no check on Amoral behaviour...

This idividual WAS Evil, IMO... and in the balance, I think pointing this out will deter MORE whackos, than it will encourage.... but neither tactic will deter them all....

528 I'm saying there is no evidence Africa, or poorer nations in general, have fewer serial or psycho killers. They are easier to hide. Most of Latin America has a problem with "missing" women. It's cause there are pyschos killing them, but not the resources to track them down. An atrocity in a poor village is less likely to make the news and more easily hidden. Same way there are many massacres in American history that weren't nationwide panic stories.

That inability to stand and face what he's done is the final mark of and root cause of his failure. Let him be eaten by wild pigs and their dung his crypt.

532 I acknowledged that many people don't believe in it anymore that's why it happens more ace. Pretty basic. As for the other point. You are saying losers see evil as seductive and thusly perform evil acts to seek the aura of power. I am arguing that within the framework of original sin evil itself is not seductive. It confers no power. Therefore, a loser versed in orginal sin might sell his soul for power, or kill someone for money etc. but he is unlikely to shoot up a school because his actions would be seen as evil, deriving from sin, and hence weak. You are confusing sin with taboos and sinful delights. Sin itself is a dirty common thing unlike "EVIL." Sin as exercising power over the imagination began with Baudelaire.

538 490 Okay, I've gone back and read what you wrote Ace.

561 Romeo13, I agree with you generally as far as NORMAL behavior and psychology -- licentiousness and crime will naturally go up in the absence of some sort of restraining factor, whether that factor be physical (eternally vigilant police presence/surveillance state) or moral philosophy or simple Myth or whatever. I think my problem, though, is extending that sort of thinking -- which is *generally* applicable to most sins and most criminal behavior -- to a truly deviant and bizarrely psychologied murder. I think the God/Morality arguments are perefectly reasonable when we're talking about reasonable people. People will tend to commit, say, adultry less frequently in a highly moral society (or a society where adultery is seriously punsihed). My problem is applying such a scheme of logical reward/punishment inputs to someone who is quite plainly not logical and not judging the Merits/Demerits associated with his action.

The slaughter of childern is so common that it doesn't even get reported much.

Of course, that may have something to do with the killers, those guys in the "Religion of Peace".

573 "How about free NOTHING for the mentally ill. I'd get behind that. If they aren't coddled, the tragedy of mental illness ends there and Darwin takes over." How about no. I don't expect most sociopathic would-be spree killers would choose to avail themselves of mental health care, but I'd prefer they have access to it when they choose. Seems to me some of these tragedies could have been prevented if a caring family, friends or society had intervened to get these people the care they desperately need.

574 548 There are mass murders all the time in Africa. The difference is they are sopnsored by the government, so it's all good. I believe her point was that such violence usually has a specific motivation behind it- political rivalry, sectarian / tribal conflicts, criminal gangs, civil war, etc. This wasn't motivated by any sort of conflict against the kids or profit. It was killing for the sake of killing and a narcissistic desire for attention in the aftermath. Posted by: Hollowpoint at December 14, 2012 04:18 PM (SY2Kh) Thank you. 592 I thought of an analogy i think is good: Those arguing about morality and God and a sickened society and etc. are discussing, basically, moral economics in a well-functioning market. In a well functioning market, with rational actors, of course you will get LESS of something (sin, crime) to the extent you penalize it more or subsidize it less. In THIS situation, however, I think we are CLEARLY talking about a non-functioning moral marketplace with a plainly IRrational actor so I don't see how any of the rules of rational actor/functioning moral marketplace are even relevant.

He does not value Christ, he does not value life, he does not value morality. But what he probably values is his ego and how he looks to others, as he's playing to a crowd. So we're talking about sort of the same thing -- how to leverage the gears of his brains -- but I disagree with you that he's even considering the things you guys are talking about.

613 Perspective: The gang and drug violence of the inner city results in more murdered children in a year than these kinds of mass one-time shootings combined in a decade. And those killings are maybe one step above senseless, in that it was over revenge, turf, money or dope. But those are totally swept under the rug and these elevated in the media because it furthers a narrative that American gun culture is to blame, and that American culture in general is the reason that inner city kids wind up helpless, hopeless, imprisoned or dead. So vote Democrat for life to solve these problems. May the good Lord please bless the souls of the victims and somehow comfort the bereaved families.

636 severe mental illness often strikes around 20. The person can go from functional - school, work, girlfriend -- to psycho killer fairly quickly. It's unlikely that a 40 year schizo has a girlfriend, but not that a 20 year old does. Cause 6 months ago his brain was probably still working near normal. Big difference if a dude has been insane for 3-6 months vs 10-20 years.

650 Hi Adriane, I agree with that. The society is by no means perfect, but it's unheard of for someone to have no family at all. Your family may be a bunch of malevolent creeps, but you still had family. And people help relatives out much more so than you do in the US. Now, where I grew up in southern Nigeria, we had quite a few beggars. But come to think of it, they were almost never from around our area. They were either from the predominantly Muslim north or some other Muslim country close by. Make of that what you will.

Ace, your prescription is flawed in one key way: ridiculing these murderers only works ex post facto, which assumes that humiliation is a deterrent.  But by your own acknowledgement, humiliation isn't a deterrent, *it's the motivating factor*.  Calling these murderers names in the hopes the next one won't kill someone is foolish, as the next one will simply say, "Oh yeah?  I'LL SHOW YOU", and go ahead and prove it.  Rationality does not work with the insane... that's why we call them the insane.

659 no, not frequently, but the onset of severe mental illness can be quick and often happens in late teens early 20s. It's why a lot of people go crazy in college. Buddy of mine had a guy in law school go paranoid nuts his 1st year. 6 months prior that guy had been a top student, great LSAT test taker, responsible guy. 6 months later he was a nutter, refusing to bathe, and screaming about plots against him. It happens. My psychiatrist friend always advises people to never marry anybody under 25 for exactly this reason.

662 Hey, last week, I went to have lunch with my kindergarten student. I went to the office to sign in myself and her little twin brothers. When I walked into the class, the teacher (who is a substitute and doesn't know me from Adam) says, "Hey, are you the lunch parent?" The lunch parent is supposed to come help watch the class and read books and such during lunch. I said, "No," but was asked to watch the class while the teacher went out in search for some lunch. (Apparently, she needed a can opener.) She said she'd be gone a minute. Thirty minutes later she finally returned. She left campus to go to a fast food restaurant w/out letting the office even know that she'd left. But the school admin hadn't even supplied this month-long substitute (a whole 'nother issue going on) with a key to get in and out of the classroom (which is a mobile unit directly next to a main road and with no security). Why this sub trusted me so much, I don't know. But I was a bit bothered to think my child might be left in the care of some random guardian, mother or father I don't even know or that's been approved by the school. Hmm. Years from now, our society will realize that all our "progress" in fact created a growing disaster of humanity.

668 And as a nonbeliever, I'm not so much offended as amused by the suggestion -- not explicitly said, but lurking around -- that because I don't have Christ in my life I'm an elevated risk to commit a mass murder. I don't think it is as black and white as "Christ in your life." You are taking it too literally. It's the foundation of a nation based on certain value and principles. My husband, an agnostic (which I call too diplomatic), was raised in a family that was a mostly Christian family (mother is Catholic) and his parents were brought up on "Christian values" (call it what you want: knowing what is right or wrong and living from a solid foundation of thought). So, basically, my husband's value system was based on the Judeo-Christian foundation. It is simply what has been instilled in a person - whether one knows it or not. Of course there is bad in every religion/group of people. But, one thing I will say. As a woman, Sharia is bad for all women. The foundation of these teachings is inherently cruel.

As I've grown up and had a family, I don't see any other option but to lock these people away.

when you say "it's become a lifestyle," surely you're not postulating a time when this was not true.

When I say "it's become a lifestyle," I mean that it's become an accepted option in our culture.   Once upon a time the Marquis de Sade was frowned upon.   Today, people walk through San Francisco in fetish gear with ball gags in their mouths and we're not allowed to express our disgust because that's considered BAD.

It has nothing to do with being Christian.   It's about having some basic human decency and respect for your fellow man.   I don't want to sit somewhere that has just been sat upon by a naked fat man,  even if the naked fat man thinks it's his right to sit there and    I shouldn't   be oppressing him with my desire that he be clothed.   When all we care about is satiation and indulgence of our own selfish desires,   then we    lose interest in the sanctity of the lives and desires of those around us.

When Tiny Dick Babykiller decided to kill these people, he did it    out of selfishness.    He did it because     of       envy, or anger, or hate,   or any of the deadly sins.      He let himself be controlled by his own   selfish desires.    THAT is what I mean when I blame degraded culture and bankrupt society for horror shows like this.    When there is no solid moral code    that forces individuals to subsume some of their selfishness in order to live harmoniously with those around them, then you end up with untethered people who     have no idea     how to act in a civilized world.

"Thou shalt not kill"    isn't just some religious claptrap.    It's the basis of pretty much every law and code of behavior in every civilized nation.  It just happens to also be    in the Bible, too.    Aristotle preached moderation in all things; he wasn't a Christian warning against sin.   These things are not based    in   any religion,    and adherence to them has nothing to do with being religious.  It's about being a decent human being.

....and many of the killers will be outlaws using guns to kill people....guns that they have obtained illegally, and now they know they have free rain because no one else has guns...I won't be there to protect your liberal ass.  (case in point, in the 70's gun control activists put signs on their front yard, "gun free house", they were all taken down within two weeks, because all the houses had been robbed at gunpoint).....when criminals know you don't have guns they will be more brazen and come after those who do not have them.

The liberal nihilist amoral society without "shame" as mentioned above is the real reason for today's carnage.

I'd like to suggest that after an appropriate period of time, when there are also numerous embarrasing pieces of information known which can form the basis for a very personal rechristening, that his legal name be replaced so that he will only be referenced by his worst photos, his new shame name (e.g. rope pusher, pindick, etc), and a record of his hall of shame loserdom failures excluding details of his horrific crime (other than to note that he committed an atrocity).

Unrelated to my thought about eventually ceasing to use his name, is the caution to make 100% sure that no info about the wrong person gets posted. I know everyone realizes this already, but a reminder can't hurt. I don't know how many identifiers are needed to insure that a mistake isnt made, but it is far more than only name and city. I have traditional, common first and last names and in my own small suburb there are 5 people with the same name as me, including one married to a woman with the same name as my wife. In the medium sized city (~500K) we live adjacent to, there are more than 20 people with the same name as me. Lots of the same for my hometown, college, etc.

726 Schizophrenia is inherited. I know way too many people who have ignored this fact and had children anyway. And then are just shocked when " little Bobby" gets scary crazy at around 20...

And his post is the adult response that a responsible media should take.  It would be great if someone with connections would take the salient points and concepts of this post and present them to the editors and producers at most of the national media outlets....or perchance, members of congress.  I guess I could start by writing to all my members of congress.

If I were the media, I'd allow myself to get very personal in publishing accounts of these guys. Personal, and nasty.

But thats not what will happen. the media will get personal and nasty with targets of political and cultural opportunity completely unrelated to the shooting.

Talk shows will have one question for Republicans: "Isnt right wing extremism to blame for this shooting, Congressperson X, and why wont you repudiate Rush Limbaugh"?

The same talk shows will have one question for Democrats" "Senator Y, isnt right wing extremism to blame for this shooting and why wont Republicans repudiate Rush Limbaugh?"

the larger issues arising from children murdered by a psycho will somehow escape media notice. those angel kids went straight to heaven and this guy will soon go straight to hell.

191 "It is long past the time when we should have armed teachers in every school in the nation."

Why would we want to have a bunch of armed public-sector union thugs around?

730 You've touched upon a very important part of how previous, healthy societies dealt with such issues: shaming. The United States used to have a robust shame culture, in spite of having a lot more guns and probably just as many psychopaths. Shame culture kept a lot of these people in line, or at least made certain their families couldn't just ignore them. Passing the buck off to someone else for your psychopathic relative simply wasn't an option. The disappearance of that shame culture -- overcompensation for actual bullying, the Me Generation wanting consequence-free pseudo-freedoms, and generally a lot of what the Left even now insists on fighting for -- is a large chunk of why things like this happen. Part of the reason the Left insists on blaming guns is to avoid an honest look in the mirror and the true cost of their pursuit of not happiness, but consequence-free lifestyles.

Shame,  guilt,  and anger are the spiraling feelings which are part of the depression-aniety cycle.  The guy probably acted on the basis of this cycle,  many people can suppress or ignore the this spiral but some (including myself) are unable to recognize the dangers.

People can try to shame you or assign guilt to you,  but usually it doesn't stick unless you've really done something bad.  So in effect,  the only true shame is probably only from your own actions.  I don't think that "shaming" this killer would have much of a effect, because he, in essence was trying to "one up" his own shame.  Other people who achieve his mindset will also act out of a need to "one up" their own shame,  so I wouldn't advise wasting timw on shaming the killer,  but rather trying to identify the problem.

734 This is, by far, the most sensible thing I've read on the subject. I hope everyone who reads this will post links on other sites, where they are playing up the "Satanic Evil" line.

735 You're snapping the towel at this kid which I guess is a conventional heteronormative response. I've overheard guys say "they should have taken him alive, cut his dick off and shoved it in his mouth" or "I wish i had just one hour with him, a pair of plyers, and a bottle of bleach." You're just a pack of bullies. And your football coach lexicon is unequal to the task in this case. It's a cowardly retreat into chest thumping. A lot of good that will do anyone after the fact. Good day sir. p.s. just because you post pictures of cheerleaders (who are hot) doesn't mean you're getting in ass....Ace.

736 Actually, e.g., the UTexas Tower shooter (Witman) seems to have been convinced he was releasing his wife and mother from a vale of tears when he killed them before ascending the clock tower. Perhaps to extend his mercy more widely. Narcissistic psychopathy, yes, but not seeing himself as an agent of evil.
