Krauthammer On The GOP's Mad Negotiating Skillz

The main reason we appear to be in a weak negotiating position on the so-called "fiscal cliff" is that we have weak negotiators.

Why are Republicans playing the Democrats’ game that the “fiscal cliff” is all about taxation?

House Speaker John Boehner already made the preemptive concession of agreeing to raise revenue. But the insistence on doing so by eliminating deductions without raising marginal rates is now the subject of fierce Republican infighting.

...

Obama is claiming an electoral mandate to raise taxes on the top 2 percent. Perhaps, but remember those incessant campaign ads promising a return to the economic nirvana of the Clinton years? Well, George W. Bush cut rates across the board, not just for the top 2 percent. Going back to the Clinton rates means middle-class tax hikes that yield four times the revenue that you get from just the rich.

So give Obama the full Clinton. Let him live with that. And with what also lies on the other side of the cliff: 28 million Americans newly subject to the ruinous alternative minimum tax.

This is the reason Obama and TurboTax Timmy made that ballsy proposal yesterday. They fully expect Boehner and McConnell to cave, and why wouldn't they?

This should be Team GOP's counter-offer to that steaming pile:


  • Current tax rates become permanent

  • AMT repealed

  • Spending permanently capped at 2007 levels plus inflation and population growth, with cuts to get down to the cap applied across the board (good for about $600 billion in deficit reduction by my quick math)

  • Obamacare delayed until the debt to GDP ratio is below 80% and U-6 unemployment is below 10%

And if not ...

McConnell seems to be on the right track, and so does Boehner, from his latest remarks. But FFS does he have to sound like a medigon Dean Martin when he's public speaking? I hear him on the radio and picture him in a seventies-style tux, holding a highball in one hand and KOOL filter king in the other.

The electorate determines the winner, and crushing your enemy on the legislative field does nothing when the judges don't understand or appreciate your deftness. We shut them down, we 'win', but when the economy continues to stagnate the judges look at that as OUR FAULT for fighting. LIB is jujitsu aimed at the judges. We stand down and let the asshats take us in the ditch. Then let the driver explain that to the judges when it is obvious to even the Honey Boo Boo types that we have nothing to do with it. 20 I'm back after a hiatus, I've calmed down a bit. Nice to see Let. It. Burn. is still alive. I'm more of a "let it go wherever" type of guy now though. Going back to the Clinton tax rates might be nice, it'll either prove higher rates don't bring in enough revenue (and maybe even less revenue), or it could end up surprising us all and working. Either way is some sort of progress.

Food stamps budget, slashed in half. 6 Heck no. Here in Indiana, we have a state gas tax on top of federal one. The state gas tax is already 18 cents a gallon, and they want to increase it to 49 cents a gallon. I filled up in Kentucky the other day, and saved 35 cents per gallon. Pathetic.

Any new spending for anything which did not exist during the Clinton administration is zeroed out and any legislation that mandated new spending adopted after the end of Clinton's final term in office is officially and totally revoked and removed from law. 75 2007 isn't ambitious enough. Take it back to 2002. Bush added way too much spending to the federal government. Say we agree Bush screwed up, lets index to real spending per capita at the level that Clinton had in his last year. And for that we'll give you the Clinton tax rates as well, which is a tax increase on everyone. Make them argue against themselves. They have been playing the Bush screwed everything up that Clinton had going. Offer to roll that back for them. Make them argue that the tax rates that Clinton had were too onerous. Make them argue that the spending that Clinton had was too little. I realize that the tax hikes would be disastrous to the economy, but we must get the deficit under control. Also we have to shake the perception that Republicans only care about the wealthy and will do anything to protect them.

There is NO "negotiation" currently taking place. I recognize that it is fun to think that both sides are really locked into this heated and grand bargaining. They aren't. It doesn't matter what they say publicly or what is "leaked". It's just for show. They have to raise the debt and print the money at this point. They HAVE TO. The Ponzi Scheme demands it. Even better, B and M could go back to a year when we had the greatest economic growth, and propose reductions back to what was in effect at that time. IIRC, it would've  been  when the Dims had their lock on Congress.

Typically, when I inadvertantly offend a female friend around here, I offer a 10" Godiva cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory to sue for peace.  Alternatively, if they are having a particularly bad day, I will do the same, because sugar, properly presented, solves everything.


Occasionally a white chocolate raspberry, or a key lime, but typically Godiva does the trick.  It's got (A. incredibly smooth chocolate, (B. a brownie crust, and (C. it's a cheesecake.

I lived in S. Philly for a while. My grandfather came over and hopscotched from Ozone Park (NYC), to 10th and Morris, then he settled in Delco.

It's all theatre of the absurd.

 

 No need to let it burn. It'll burn all by itself.

 

 Neither side is serious about reducing the budget, let alone paying down the debt. When we're borrowing forty cents of every dollar we spend, and when we're talking about tens of trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities and debt? The current tempest in a teapot is absurd to the point of insanity.

 Slash the size of government. Cut it to the bone. The EPA, NEA, TSA, DHS, Pentagon, welfare, food stamps, national parks, BLM, foreign aid (including Israel), 501(c)3's, Social Security, Medicare, whatever your favorite government program, department or bureaucracy, it's gotta go or be slashed. If you claim any diffrently, you're simply not being serious about the topic.

 Over half the laws on the books need to be repealed so we can get rid of the bureaucracies and bureaucrats (SEIU government benefits, baby), including government employee unions. It'll also free up costs of compliance (fees, permits, taxes) and help to set the economy on fire.

 It's all gotta go or be cut to the bone. Anything else is bullshit. Anything less leads to automatically letting it burn. Currently, unless you're a government employee, the math simply doesn't add up any other way...and the math is dead simple.

 

 iow, it's gonna burn, anyway. You don't haveta want it to burn. You - and the rest of America - already made that decision. You made it a long time ago...

301 90 Agree about striking workers, disagree about temporarily unemployed. I think quite the opposite. Give unemployment temporarily. Cut aid to long term unemployed. They stop looking for work and just skate by on tax payers' support. If you take away their unemployment, that forces them to either get a job, any job or to seek aid from other private sources. About 15 years ago, when my sister and I were young, but I was old enough to understand what was going on.....I don't know if you remember, but the Teamsters had a strike, and UPS shut down. That put my dad out of work. My dad tried to be brave about it, act all "No big deal" but it was scary. He was not one of the strikers, he just wanted to work. It was scary, not knowing how long the strike would last, if my dad would even have a job to return to when it was over. He was a 45 year old man with no college degree or formal training and two girls to put through college. (As it turns out he would have paid a whole lot less for our schooling had he been fired and taken on a job making far less) They tried to keep life as normal as possible, but at one point they did sit me down and explain that I needed to prepare for possibly being transferred to the public school in town, away from the private school I had attended my whole life and all of my friends. That was devastating for me to hear, but I feel worse for them.....it was not an easy thing to tell me, and I know my dad felt beyond awful. Three generations of my father's side of the family had graduated from my private school; I would be the fourth. The day came when my dad went to file for unemployment. He didn't want to do it. He felt ashamed. He felt less of a person. My mom had to convince him to do it. He went with some of his coworkers, and I think that helped. As it turns out, the strike only lasted a couple of weeks, though in my memory, it felt much longer. Long story short, some families need just a little bit of help, just to get over the hump, just to make it through.....and that's what unemployment should be for....to help people out for a short time; in the end, they will be back in the workforce contributing 10fold back into society. Unemployment should not be for people who have never worked, or worked for 6 months, then receive 5 years of unemployment. It shouldn't be a blank check for people not even trying to get jobs or not even trying to get educated or trained for jobs.

304 On the previous LIB post Gabe pointed out that LIB is unlikely to impact the thinking of the Honey Boo Boos of the FSA. In that case, these people are literally, and not in the Joe Biden sense, too stupid to live and should die because of their abject failure to perceive reality. It takes nothing less than the enslavement of the productive to prop up the unthinking, unserious, undeserving FSA, who will vote in any government necessary to gladly enslave the productive for that very purpose.
