— andy The main reason we appear to be in a weak negotiating position on the so-called "fiscal cliff" is that we have weak negotiators.
Why are Republicans playing the Democrats’ game that the “fiscal cliff” is all about taxation?House Speaker John Boehner already made the preemptive concession of agreeing to raise revenue. But the insistence on doing so by eliminating deductions without raising marginal rates is now the subject of fierce Republican infighting.
...
Obama is claiming an electoral mandate to raise taxes on the top 2 percent. Perhaps, but remember those incessant campaign ads promising a return to the economic nirvana of the Clinton years? Well, George W. Bush cut rates across the board, not just for the top 2 percent. Going back to the Clinton rates means middle-class tax hikes that yield four times the revenue that you get from just the rich.
So give Obama the full Clinton. Let him live with that. And with what also lies on the other side of the cliff: 28 million Americans newly subject to the ruinous alternative minimum tax.
This is the reason Obama and TurboTax Timmy made that ballsy proposal yesterday. They fully expect Boehner and McConnell to cave, and why wouldn't they?
This should be Team GOP's counter-offer to that steaming pile:
- Current tax rates become permanent
- AMT repealed
- Spending permanently capped at 2007 levels plus inflation and population growth, with cuts to get down to the cap applied across the board (good for about $600 billion in deficit reduction by my quick math)
- Obamacare delayed until the debt to GDP ratio is below 80% and U-6 unemployment is below 10%

McConnell seems to be on the right track, and so does Boehner, from his latest remarks. But FFS does he have to sound like a medigon Dean Martin when he's public speaking? I hear him on the radio and picture him in a seventies-style tux, holding a highball in one hand and KOOL filter king in the other.
We need a better front man.

This is actually not a bad proposal. Not bad at all. I still think passing Bowles-Simpson (warts & all) is another solid strategy.

"REVENUE IS NEWSPEAK FOR TAX!"
We should flatly refuse to talk about "revenue" and insist that we call that thing that which it is- TAXATION.
Government does not make money, government TAKES money. Government does not have "revenue" government levies TAXES.
Do not allow the other side to control the vocabulary!

There is NO "negotiation" currently taking place. I recognize that it is fun to think that both sides are really locked into this heated and grand bargaining. They aren't. It doesn't matter what they say publicly or what is "leaked". It's just for show. They have to raise the debt and print the money at this point. They HAVE TO. The Ponzi Scheme demands it. We have been sliding down the slope for quite sometime now. It will start to pick up steam now. That is just the way it is.

Since we all know that Boner and Bitch McConnell will cave to TFG and his plans to destroy us and capitalism, why not go all out and propose something that will actually work to revive the economy?
Like an across the board 20% reduction in Federal salaries, coupled with the abolition of a few federal departments such as Homeland Security, the EPA, Depts of Energy and Education. Massive tax cuts, hell, even a flat tax of 10%. Get real radical on their asses, since that's what They Do to us.
Even better, B and M could go back to a year when we had the greatest economic growth, and propose reductions back to what was in effect at that time. IIRC, it would've been when the Dims had their lock on Congress.

We let the Democrats - a party financed by the super rich and dedicated to serving the lazy - become the party of the middle class. WTF'ing F? The average person in this country has absolutely no clue how our fiscal and monetary policies work. Those running the show can do whatever they please and when shit hits the fan because of their policies, they can blame whomever they choose and be credible.
I don't even see a point in trying to convince them of their errors anymore. They don't listen. Takes too much effort. It's taken for granted that civilization will just keep chugging along and that our wants and needs can just be magically granted by the government; you can show all of the facts and figures and logic against that as you like (and they are all against it), but people believe otherwise. And that's the problem: it is a matter of belief, of religion, with people nowadays.
Let he who has eyes to see and ears to hear...well, people don't have the eyes to see and the ears to hear.
This country just doesn't deserve liberty and economic prosperity anymore. Some folks do, of course (the Moron horde, for example), but there aren't enough in the country to keep it going.
Ah, screw it. AARRRGGGGHH!

Greece is still there because the EU banks have been bailing them out with outside capital.
We don't have anyone except our own Fed Res Bank who can do that.... but to do that they must print money, which devalues the dollar...
Note, CHINA does NOT own most of our debt.... our own Banks and Social Security system do...

I think what most everyone has been missing, particularly the pundits, is that Obama is not negotiating. He's dictating, his preferred method of governance. Just when, exactly, has Obama ever negotiated anything? In the past he has intimidated, agitated,a and sued to get his way. He has never negotiated anything, and does not have the skills to do so even if the idea occurred to him.

Fine. So, GOP, daddy-party of tough guys, stand up and spell out what you want cut. It's not difficult, as many of you here do it all the time. Say what you want cut, tell the american people straight up. Then the negotiations can begin.
But it won't happen for the same reason the public rejected ryan and romney. It's unpopular, regardless of what the un-skewed polls tell you.
Posted by: Olaf at November 30, 2012 11:25 AM (t1NLo)
Oh, goody, our pig-piss troll is back. Perhaps, after you've brushed the Cheeto crumbs out of your feculent jockey shorts, you can remind us of the magical time when cuts were popular, hmm? Cuts are never popular, even when necessary, and as you prove on a daily basis, even were the GOP to 'spell out' what they want cut (as if the dog-eating Kenyan has no responsibility to produce a budget at all), honey booboos like you would still scream and shit your diapers instead of looking at the cuts suggested in a reasonable manner.
But there's hope on the horizon. Just like mommy's getting tired of you sucking at her wrinkly, busted-out tit, MATH! is going to get tired of hauling your feces-encrusted, dingleberry-displaying ass around. So keep laughing it up, funny guy - we'll be laughing when you finally hit the rocks.

Greece is still there because the EU banks have been bailing them out with outside capital.
That should read "Greek banks are still there because EU banks have been bailing them out." All the payments have gone to pay interest on failed loans to keep the Greek banks afloat. None of the payments have actually reduced any debt. The Greeks in the street aren't getting any of it. They are only getting benefit cuts and higher taxes.
Can you say temporary? I knew you could.

Now heÂ’s been reelected and serves for 4 more
the rest of the ride will surely be not a bore.

Daddy protects the family (pro Defense)... is often the enforcer of rules (pro Law Enforcment)... is the one who will be at the door if someone scary is there (pro border control).... and is often the one who says NO when the kids want somthing (unless its a BB gun, see pro defense above... LOL).
Now.... Dems? Mommy Party... Wants to nag about everything you do... caves on rules and punishement if you're the favorite child... Calls Daddy is someone scary is at the door... tells us to eat our vegetables... is much 'nicer' than Daddy...
(now, I'm talking the Leave it Beaver way of family, which is still part of the American Myth that we believe about ourself.... not reality or any one anecdotal couple....).

I don't have to be so quiet that the bear doesn't hear me, I only have to be quiet enough that all he hears is you.
Republicans shouldn't be thinking about letting it burn, they should be thinking about hunkering down, walking softly, hibernating, rearing cubs, ignoring Washington, going back to their districts and building solidarity. Let Harry Reid with his creepy child molestor's voice and no budget to show for it make all the noise for the bear to hear. Let George Jefferson Obama do all the high profile strutting and preening.
Go over the cliff and let the bear focus on who out there has the highest profile, making the most noise.
Murmur. Whisper. Sit tight. Republicans still have the purse strings, which is all that really matters. Stall all funding. Vote things out of committee, then send them back. Ignore governing now; Republicans can't govern now anyway. Build for governing the right way in the future.
In the meantime, as winter drought falls across the land, let the starving bear focus on those critters left still gamboling merrily through the landscape, the media and the Democrats.

How about we create ONE Commitee in the House, to oversea the Budet of EACH Federal Department?
Not an oversite for all.... but one group who works the budget for each single one... and has oversite on regulations and actions of THAT Department?
Its like on Fast and Furious... where we have two or threee different HOUSE groups working the problem...

Maybe they see a recession coming and just want a scapegoat?

"Omissions of certain articles, such as bans on slavery or promises to adhere to international rights treaties, were equally worrying to critics of the new draft, who pulled out from the panel before the vote."
Well, duh. Did the panelists just forget that slavery is still a perfectly acceptable practice in Africa, and in Muslim societies in general? That's not exactly NEWS, dickwads.
And as for international rights treaties, I'm surprised the Egyptian delegation didn't just slap a big, "LOL!" in their Constitution where that was supposed to be.

Bears AKA FSA and DOOM have tremendous olfactory senses and incredible closing speed. They will sniff out the quietest and run down and maul the most fleet of foot.
Not to say that going silent and improving your own position isn't a great idea. It's that eventually the bear will get you unless you move to where there are no bears (See British rich down by 2/3rds post) Where did they or their money go? That is what I want to know. Or does a lowly sub-rich hick not have a chance?

So maybe if they concede the whole slavery thing they can get the honoring treaties thing? Maybe the GOP should take negotiating lessons from these guys.

Something I don't get here--if you want to attempt to get a handle on the financial mess, why do you NOT start with a budget?
You could use say, one of the several formulated and ignored--whichever was most appropriate--and base the cuts etc on that.
I would be willing to do so and shut it down were the GOP willing to make THAT the hill to die on.

Like olaf said, the democrats are too coward to even propose a budget. It would mean publishing exact numbers and......sticking to them.

WTF were the Republicans mentioning THAT during the election? Isn't a budget REQUIRED BY LAW?!?!?

What kind of cheesecake? The kind you eat, or the kind you date? Because I'm good with either one.

Typically, when I inadvertantly offend a female friend around here, I offer a 10" Godiva cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory to sue for peace. Alternatively, if they are having a particularly bad day, I will do the same, because sugar, properly presented, solves everything.
Occasionally a white chocolate raspberry, or a key lime, but typically Godiva does the trick. It's got (A. incredibly smooth chocolate, (B. a brownie crust, and (C. it's a cheesecake.
You just can't go wrong. o.O

Oh the economy is frightful
But obama is so delightful
The voters show no concern
Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn
**************************
It doesn't show signs of stopping
U.S. credit rating dropping
See the money presses churn
Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn
U.S. debt climbs way out of sight
High unemployment the new norm
Poverty will grip us so tight
We'll burn our pets to stay warm
***************************
Nation is slowly dying
Brainless sheep are multiplying
Sanity they like to spurn
Let it burn, let it burn, let it burn

It's all theatre of the absurd.
No need to let it burn. It'll burn all by itself.
Neither side is serious about reducing the budget, let alone paying down the debt. When we're borrowing forty cents of every dollar we spend, and when we're talking about tens of trillions of dollars in unfunded liabilities and debt? The current tempest in a teapot is absurd to the point of insanity.
Slash the size of government. Cut it to the bone. The EPA, NEA, TSA, DHS, Pentagon, welfare, food stamps, national parks, BLM, foreign aid (including Israel), 501(c)3's, Social Security, Medicare, whatever your favorite government program, department or bureaucracy, it's gotta go or be slashed. If you claim any diffrently, you're simply not being serious about the topic.
Over half the laws on the books need to be repealed so we can get rid of the bureaucracies and bureaucrats (SEIU government benefits, baby), including government employee unions. It'll also free up costs of compliance (fees, permits, taxes) and help to set the economy on fire.
It's all gotta go or be cut to the bone. Anything else is bullshit. Anything less leads to automatically letting it burn. Currently, unless you're a government employee, the math simply doesn't add up any other way...and the math is dead simple.
iow, it's gonna burn, anyway. You don't haveta want it to burn. You - and the rest of America - already made that decision. You made it a long time ago...
